In November 2018, a wildfire blazed through Paradise, California, a town of 26,000 in the forested foothills of the Sierra Nevada. Flames raged for more than 2 weeks, killing 85 people and incinerating many of the buildings, making the Camp Fire, as it was called, the state’s deadliest and most destructive wildfire.
Related: Benzene found in the water supply of fire-ravaged Paradise, California

After the fire was extinguished, residents who wanted to return home and start rebuilding their lives were dealt another blow: testing revealed toxic levels of benzene, a carcinogen, in the drinking-water system. New research implicates plastic pipes as a key source of contamination.
Immediately after the fire, the Paradise Irrigation District, which supplies the town’s water, didn’t know how the pipes became contaminated, how to clean them up, or how to safeguard the system against future fires. So it asked environmental engineer Andrew Whelton, who leads Purdue University’s Healthy Plumbing Consortium and Center for Plumbing Safety, to launch an investigation.
Most immediately, the district wanted to know how to get rid of the benzene. But it turned out that this was far from the only volatile organic compound (VOC) in the water system.
There’s never a silver bullet with hazard mitigation.
Jenna Tilt, social scientist, Oregon State University
The state asked the testing laboratory for only the benzene results of its gas chromatography analysis. But Whelton asked for all the results and saw so many contaminants that “the chromatograph lit up like a Christmas tree,” he says. Other VOCs in Paradise’s water included naphthalene, styrene, toluene, and xylenes. “You need to know how to look for unknowns,” Whelton says. “The state didn’t know what questions to ask—it’s a gap in policy.”

A woman who had to abandon her Dublin 4 home due to a toxic chemical spill at a neighbour’s property has claimed before the High Court that repair works are causing further damage to her house.
Last year, Sharon Keane and her two children had to move out of their family home at 22 Grand Canal Street, Dublin 4 following a spillage of a hazardous chemical called Xylene that was being stored on the property of her neighbours Thomas and Bronwyn Dunne.
At the High Court on Friday Ms Keane secured a temporary injunction from Mr Justice Max Barrett preventing building, remedial and construction works being carried out of the Dunnes property, at 20 Grand Canal Street.
The works are to cease pending an inspection and survey of the property by Ms Keane’s consulting engineers as to the extent of the excavations being carried by the defendants and their contractors, the court ordered.
The order was sought due to Ms Keane’s concerns that the works currently being conducted on the Dunne’s property is causing further damage to the plaintiff’s home.
Her counsel Gary McCarthy SC, instructed by Bunbury Darcy Solicitors, said that the strong fumes and odour that severely affected their health from the xylene spillage in September 2020 resulted in Ms Keane and her children having to leave their home.

The company behind the four-day chemical blaze that cast a black plume over Houston earlier this year is preparing to destroy one of the tanks at the facility, raising the risk that the site could see “flash” fires.

Intercontinental Terminals Co. will deconstruct a xylene tank on Wednesday, according to an alert from a community hotline. That could result in “small, short duration flash fires and increased emissions” at the terminal, the alert said. The company said it has a firefighting team on site and has deployed air monitors.

ITC said in March tanks that escaped the flames might have to be demolished anyway because they were compromised by searing temperatures.“With the amount of heat that was exposed to those tanks, we’ll have to take all of those most likely out of service, might have to inspect them, potentially have to demolish them and probably start over,” David Wascome, ITC’s senior vice president of operations, told reporters at the time.

PAYETTE COUNTY — State agencies, including the Idaho Department of Environmental Quality will be following up on a chemical spill in a ditch near the Snake River outside of Fruitland. There is no concern for public safety at this time, however, as the chemical never reached the river or any other water source.

At about 9:50 a.m. today, Payette County Sheriff’s Office received a report of the possible hazardous material spill on Whitley near Glenway.

The caller, as well as the incident commander who responded to the scene both said a large amount of fish were killed in the event, confirmed Payette County Sheriff’s Lt. Andy Creech in a phone interview.

First responders on scene located a liquid substance that was later identified as Ortho-Xylene 98, according to a news release from the sheriff’s office. The chemical is commonly used by ditch companies as well as farmers to control moss and algae in ditches, according to Creech.

A small chemical spill at UW Hospital Tuesday night brought out the hazardous incident team of the Madison Fire Department, with nobody injured in the spill.

The spill of xylene happened at about 7:30 p.m. at the hospital, 1675 Highland Ave.

Xylene is a solvent and cleaning agent, and also is used as a paint thinner. About five gallons of xylene was spilled.

Engine 9 was sent to the incident at first, and after meeting with hospital staff and looking at the situation, the hazardous incident team was asked to respond.

"HIT members, wearing protective clothing and air packs, used absorbent materials to clean the spill," said MFD spokesman Eric Dahl. "The material was put into a disposal cotainer for pickup by a licensed contractor."

Oil refineries and chemical plants across the Texas Gulf Coast released more than 1 million pounds of dangerous air pollutants in the week after Harvey struck, according to public regulatory filings aggregated by the Center for Biological Diversity.

While attention has zeroed in on the crisis at the Arkema chemical plant in Crosby, Tex., other facilities — oil refineries, chemical plants and shale drilling sites — have been reporting flaring, leaks and chemical discharges triggered by Harvey.

Emissions have already exceeded permitted levels, after floating rooftops sank on oil storage tanks, chemical storage tanks overflowed with rainwater, and broken valves and shutdown procedures triggered flaring at refineries.

The chemicals released in the week after Harvey made landfall, including benzene, 1,3-butadiene, hexane, hydrogen sulfide, sulfur dioxide, toluene and xylene.

ST. GEORGE — A small chemical spill of Xylene in a laboratory at Dixie Regional Medical Center brought a quick response from a St. George Fire Department’s hazmat team Thursday afternoon.

Two fire trucks packed with firefighters from the St. George Fire Department responded to the hospital after receiving a call reporting a chemical spill in the histology lab, St. George Fire Captain Tyler Talbot said.

The St. George Fire Department and Dixie Regional’s emergency management team responded to the Xylene spill and determined it to be minor, McKoye Mecham, communications specialist for Intermountain Healthcare, said.

Xylene is a hydrocarbon widely used in medical technology as a solvent. In histologist laboratories Xylene is used for tissue processing, staining and cover slipping, according to the U.S. National Library of Medicine. Exposure to the substance can occur through inhalation, ingestion, and eye or skin contact. Exposure can cause irritation of the nose and throat, with symptoms such as headache, dizziness, nausea and vomiting. In higher doses it can cause depression of the central nervous system.

Formaldehyde and two forms of xylene mixed in a third-floor science lab, Leetsdale fire Chief Ernie Logan said. Nobody was injured.

No students were in the building at the time. Their last day of class was June 7. But an unknown number of district staff members and some community members were inside.

The spill was contained, Logan said.

He said the mixture can be an inhalation hazard, which prompted the evacuation.

Logan said he expected crews to be on scene through mid-afternoon.

Environmental Protection Agency officials released more information about chemicals detected at an abandoned oil drum operation at Marco Avenue and Market Street.

Thousands of steel and plastic containers at the site have been leaking toxins into the ground, contaminating water wells and creating significant fire hazards, NewsWest 9 previously reported.

Approximately 15,000 drums were left on the 4.5-acre plot of land after a company that operated under the names "Ector Drum" and "Lone Star Drum" went out of business in 2011, according to Bill Rhotenberry, a federal on-scene coordinator with the EPA.

"We're seeing some BTEX chemicals [at the site]," he told NewsWest 9. "Those are volatile chemicals that are commonly found in crude oil and oil field chemicals."

"BTEX" chemicals include benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and xylenes. Prolonged exposure to the chemicals has been linked to brain damage, increased risk of cancer and groundwater contamination.

Chinese citizens have been especially wary of these chemical plants since April when a new p-xylene plant exploded in Fujian province.
Government authorities in Shanghai insist that no plans for a new p-xylene facility there exist.
The protests in Shanghai started after the government of Jinshan initiated a public consultation process as part of an environmental impact assessment (EIA) of an existing chemical industry park. In a statement, officials point out that the chemical industry zone has not undergone an EIA for five years and that it is time for one to be performed.
However, plans for the assessment and a separate site integration project have apparently led Shanghai residents to conclude that a p-xylene plant will be built. Still, government officials say, “The EIA for the development plan of the chemical industry zone does not involve a p-xylene project, and it’s not possible that it would have a p-xylene project in the future, either.”

China's work safety watchdog on Wednesday blamed an explosion at a chemical plant in southeast China this month on the factory's management and failings in local government supervision.

The April 6 blast and ensuing hydrocarbon fire at the paraxylene plant in Fujian province left six people hospitalized and renewed discussion on China's social media about the potential dangers of factories that produce the toxic chemical.

Huang Yi, spokesman for the State Administration of Work Safety, told reporters Wednesday that the bosses of the Goure PX Plant chose the cheapest bidder to build the facility at the expense of safety. He said a furnace was too close to storage tanks, so when unspecified materials leaked into the furnace because of a broken tube, the blast tore into a tank and caused the fire.

Huang also said that the company and local government had failed to adequately carry out safety management and supervision, and that those responsible would be dealt with according to law.

The accident happened on April 6 at a plant operated by Xianglu Tenglong Group, a company that media reports say is owned by unspecified Taiwanese investors. The same facility had already experienced a less serious blast in July 2013.
Television reports from the April 6 explosion showed flames shooting tens of feet into the air. China’s state agency Xinhua reports that no one died but 14 people were injured.
Zhangzhou’s fire department posted on Weibo—the Chinese equivalent of Twitter—that 610 firefighters and 122 fire engines from the cities of Zhangzhou, Xiamen, Longyan, and Quanzhou worked together to extinguish the blaze. The fire department also noted that soldiers from PLA’s chemical warfare unit participated in firefighting efforts, although the nature of their contribution was not described.

WHITTIER >> Two people suffered minor injuries and 14 people were evacuated after a chemical spill caused a flash fire in a lab at a local hospital Friday, authorities said.

Los Angeles County Fire Inspector Keith Mora said it happened at a lab at PIH Health Hospital - Whittier at 12401 Washington Blvd.

The incident was initially reported at 7:55 a.m. as a possible explosion. But Mora said there was no explosion.

Mora said a woman was pouring a chemical, Xylene, into a funnel when it spilled onto the floor and caused a flash fire. He didn’t know if the woman was a tech at the lab.

“She went to the emergency room. One other person in the lab went with her to the ER with minor injuries,” Mora said.

Of the 14 people evacuated, Mora said none were patients.

No one was injured when between five and 10 gallons of the chemical Xylene spilled on the fourth floor of offices of Sterling Pathology National Laboratories at 3030 Old Ranch Parkway about 5 p.m., prompting evacuation of the floor, Orange County Fire Authority Capt. Steve Concialdi said.

About 25 firefighters and hazardous materials team members contained the “highly flammable” chemical, Concialdi said.

The clean-up operation was turned over to the Orange County Health Care Agency and a private company around 7:40 p.m., Concialdi said.

The chemical, which is heavier than air when it evaporates and stays close to the ground, posed an explosion risk, Concialdi said.

Firefighters shut down the building's heating, air conditioning and ventilation system and evacuated about 40 people before containing the spill, Concialdi said.

Tuesday’s blast at the plant at Zhangzhou city in southeastern Fujian province caused no chemical leaks, officials said, but environmental activists seized on the accident as a warning of potential problems at factories that produce paraxylene, or PX, which is used in printing and to make polyesters. The blast shattered windows in a nearby village, injuring some residents, including Lin Jianzhou, whose leg was injured when his roof collapsed, the Xinhua News Agency said, citing reporters on the scene.

PX plants around the country have become a hot-button issue, especially among China’s growing middle class.

Beijing: A powerful explosion damaged a controversial paraxylene plant in China's eastern Fujian Province, officials said Tuesday.

No casualties have been reported, according to the county government. A fire that erupted after the explosion has been brought under control, officials said.

The controversial chemical plant was built in 2009 on Gulei Peninsula after the project was called off in the coastal city of Xiamen amid protests over potential pollution and health problems, state-run Xinhua news agency reported.

A Zhangpu county government spokesman said an initial investigation found that a cracked hydrogen pipeline triggered the fire during a pressure test.

He said the blast did not heavily damage the plant, nor has it resulted in any chemical leaks. However, windows on a number of residences near the plant were shattered in the explosion. This is the second explosion of a chemical plant in the last few days.

A massive explosion destroyed a chemical factory in the city of Liaocheng in China's eastern Shandong Province on July 27. Official media said no casualties were reported in that blast.

Chinese cities don’t often see demonstrations. But the proposed building of a new chemical plant in the city of Kunming did manage to drive thousands of people into the streets in protest. Kunming may be small by Chinese standards, but it has a population of six million, many of whom don’t want a giant paraxylene plant in their backyard. They’re worried about the release of toxic chemicals, which is understandable given that a recent analysis by the Health Effects Institute in Boston found that every year more than one million people die prematurely in China because of air pollution. The concern is that the new chemical plant, on track to process 10 million tons of crude oil and produce half a million tons of paraxylene (PX for short) every year, will contribute to pollution.

More than 200 demonstrators gathered in the city of Kunming to protest plans for a factory which will produce paraxylene (PX), a toxic petrochemical used to make fabrics, China's official Xinhua news agency reported.
Around 1,000 people described as "onlookers" surrounded the protesters, some of whom wore face-masks and held banners, the report said, adding that police "dissuaded" a protester from displaying a banner.
Police also lined the streets of Chengdu, the capital of southwest China's Sichuan province, after locals planned to demonstrate over a nearby chemical plant, residents contacted online by AFP said.
"There were a lot of police outside government offices, public spaces and important crossroads in the city," one resident surnamed Liu said, adding that fliers posted around the city in recent days had called for a protest.

Tuesday's explosion in New Iberia is raising concerns from doctors and chemists. Some of those chemicals involved in the explosion could cause side effects for people nearby. A few of the chemicals used at the plant include xylene, toluene and methanol. All, highly explosive chemicals. Now, residents are voicing some health complaints in the aftermath.

"It's unusual," one resident said. "I wasn't feeling the same after I left."

He complained of being light-headed and experienced some headaches. It's statements like that are common in New Iberia now, after a chemical explosion rocked some nearby homes.
Louisiana's Department of Environmental Quality says air measurements in the area are at safe levels but experts say there are some risks.

"If you around this fire and breathed in some of the smoke and fumes, you'll probably have some symptoms," Dr. Gary Guidry said.

Dr. Guidry is a pulmonologist at Lafayette General. In short, he studies lungs.
Guidry says if chemicals like xylene and methanol are airborne, it won't take much to start seeing side effects.

"Headache, nausea, vomiting, CNS (central nervous system) depression," he listed. "For toluene, they can go into pulmonary edema which is fluid building up in the lungs."

The list of possible problems doesn't just stop with people. Chemist Wilma Subra says the affected area also includes local farms and food supplies.

Kona Community Hospital employees reported smelling a strong odor in the emergency room Thursday morning, prompting an evacuation of about 35 people.

West Hawaii Today reported Friday six patients and seven staff members overcome by fumes were treated in other areas of the hospital. There were no serious injuries.

A fire department hazardous materials team deemed the area safe after checking air and flammability levels.

Capt. Kaipo Parish told the newspaper the exposure occurred when the chemical called xylene was being transferred between containers.

Temple Fire and Rescue officials reported at about 10:30 a.m., 50 gallons of xylene spilled from a 700-gallon tank.

The spill was contained in a spill room which is specifically designed for that purpose.

Xylene, a substance similar to gasoline, is used in making adhesives.

The workers were evacuated by company officials because that is procedure in such incidents, firefighters said.

Temple firefighters and HazMat crews were on hand at noon doing atmospheric tests to determine the there was danger of explosion or fire.

A sewer in Manchester city centre has been contaminated by a dangerous chemical.

Xylene, which is highly flammable and toxic if it goes above a certain temperature, leaked into the sewer in the Strangeways area when thieves tried to steal the cab of a tanker.

The gang opened a valve on the tanker and thousands of gallons of the chemical poured into the sewage system. The chemical has now solidified into a jelly-like substance which is clogging up the sewer.

Now United Utilities, the Environment Agency, the fire service, and Manchester council are working together to deal with the pollution.

They insist that there is no risk to public safety at the moment.

The chemical – a clear liquid – is refined from crude oil. It is used as a solvent in printing, rubber, and leather industries.

Authorities believe the level monitoring system in a 3,000 gallon holding tank malfunctioned, allowing the flammable liquid to overflow, according to Battalion Chief Paul Nies of the Chandler Fire Department. Firefighters were able to contain the highly flammable liquid and prevent any additional overflow.

The xylene that flowed out of the tank collected in a containment pit. Xylene is a clear, colorless liquid that has a characteristically sweet smell.

It is commonly used as a solvent in the printing and rubber industries and as a cleaning agent.

Contractors hired by the owner of the tank are expected to clean up the spill with fire crews providing protection.

Around 8:30 a.m., someone was cleaning and knocked over a bottle of Xylene, a clear, colorless liquid that can be very flammable. Students were asked to leave the classroom where the spill was contained, but the building was not evacuated, said township Police Chief Brian Goodin.

“It had an odor to it, and as a precaution, they called the fire department,” he said. “It was determined that it was nothing of any major issue. They used big fans to blow the area out, and fortunately it was by one of the main doors.”

City officials believe that Thursday's rain diluted the chemical and that it posed no threat to residents.
The chemical began seeping after a container fell over inside a truck Wednesday in the 2500 block of Custer Parkway, near Lookout Drive. It dripped for about a mile to a parking lot at the southeast corner of Custer and Renner Road. The driver notified his trucking company, and a cleanup company was called.
But on Thursday, city officials said the job was incomplete. City spokesman Greg Sowell said the cleanup company would be cited.
