Workers involved in cleaning up the 2010 Deepwater Horizon disaster, the country’s largest oil spill, were 60% more likely to be diagnosed with asthma or experience asthma symptoms 1 to 3 years afterwards, compared with those who were not involved in the cleanup.

An ongoing study of the tens of thousands of oil spill response and cleanup (OSRC) workers involved in the aftermath of the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico has discovered that they were 60% more likely to develop asthma in the years after the environmental disaster

The oil drilling rig exploded and sank April 20, 2010, killing 11 workers, and the spill was not capped for 87 days.

Until now, not much has been known about the effects of oil spills on respiratory health or on links between specific chemicals and lung health. Observational epidemiologic studies have found a higher risk of respiratory harm for oil cleanup workers, but quantitative measures have been lacking.

The Deepwater workers were exposed to airborne total hydrocarbons (THC); a subgroup of chemicals from crude oil (benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, o-, m-, and p-xylenes and n-hexane, known collectively as BTEX-H) as well asPM2.5 from burning/flaring oil and natural gas. These chemicals are classified as hazardous air pollutants according to the US Clean Air Act and are linked to other health issues.

According to public records, the company sent an inventory of 125 chemicals that were in quantities below 1,000 pounds to the Nebraska Department of Environment and Energy (NDEE) on June 21. It had already submitted chemicals in quantities above 5,000 pounds.

Included on the new list is just under 46 pounds of toluene diisocyanate. Fox 42 previously reported the chemical had been listed on an inventory NDEE had of the building in February. According to the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry, TDI produces toxic gases like cyanides and nitrogen oxides when burned.

In November 2018, a wildfire blazed through Paradise, California, a town of 26,000 in the forested foothills of the Sierra Nevada. Flames raged for more than 2 weeks, killing 85 people and incinerating many of the buildings, making the Camp Fire, as it was called, the state’s deadliest and most destructive wildfire.
Related: Benzene found in the water supply of fire-ravaged Paradise, California

After the fire was extinguished, residents who wanted to return home and start rebuilding their lives were dealt another blow: testing revealed toxic levels of benzene, a carcinogen, in the drinking-water system. New research implicates plastic pipes as a key source of contamination.
Immediately after the fire, the Paradise Irrigation District, which supplies the town’s water, didn’t know how the pipes became contaminated, how to clean them up, or how to safeguard the system against future fires. So it asked environmental engineer Andrew Whelton, who leads Purdue University’s Healthy Plumbing Consortium and Center for Plumbing Safety, to launch an investigation.
Most immediately, the district wanted to know how to get rid of the benzene. But it turned out that this was far from the only volatile organic compound (VOC) in the water system.
There’s never a silver bullet with hazard mitigation.
Jenna Tilt, social scientist, Oregon State University
The state asked the testing laboratory for only the benzene results of its gas chromatography analysis. But Whelton asked for all the results and saw so many contaminants that “the chromatograph lit up like a Christmas tree,” he says. Other VOCs in Paradise’s water included naphthalene, styrene, toluene, and xylenes. “You need to know how to look for unknowns,” Whelton says. “The state didn’t know what questions to ask—it’s a gap in policy.”

Around 5:30 P.M. on Wednesday, fire departments across Midland County, and mutual aid from Martin County, responded to a fire call at a business.

“They were mixing or off-loading some chemical and somehow, it ignited,” said Midland County Fire Marshal Justin Bunch. “We got two flammable liquids involved: toluene and methanol… What they were trying to mix them for, I don’t know. We’re still trying to investigate that.”

Thankfully, Bunch said no structures were damaged. Only the 55-barrel drums holding the chemicals were destroyed. They got hot and exploded, Bunch said.

BRIAR Chemicals has been fined £1m (US$1.4m) following the death of a contractor at its site in Norwich, UK, in 2018.

On 27 July 2018, maintenance contractor Rob Cranston was killed when an explosion occurred at the Briar Chemicals site. Cranston was working alongside his son, Owen, to perform repair work as part of planned maintenance on a mixing vessel. A Health and Safety Executive (HSE) investigation found that toluene residue had been left inside the vessel, and that a welding torch or grinder likely ignited the toluene vapour.

The investigation also found that two valves above the vessel in the supply pipe were leaking toluene. When the vessel was shutdown at the beginning of June 2018, operatives transferred toluene from one tank to another via the supply pipe, which allowed toluene to leak into the vessel. The vessel was assumed to be empty and clean prior to the maintenance works beginning.

The HSE found that Briar Chemicals failed to take all necessary measures to prevent the explosion.

Three workers sustained injuries after a boiler unit exploded within the premises of a chemical factory in the Attibele Industrial Area on September 24. The incident comes after two fire incidents were reported in the last four days. According to a report in The Hindu, the blast occurred at Lake Chemicals Pvt Limited, a pharma-related plant, around 1.20 pm. The report stated that Gnanavelu (22) and Mune Gowda (30) were grievously injured while Suryanath (27) sustained minor injuries. The injured workers are being treated at a private hospital near the factory in Anekal taluk and are out of danger, the report said.

The Times of India quoted officials saying that the fire was triggered due to a technical snag with the boiler unit. PM Nagesh, District Fire Officer, told the Hindu that the vessel had chemicals like toluene, methanol, hydrochloric acid. He said that they could not ascertain the exact cause of the blast.

The Bengaluru rural police have registered a case against the factory owners and are investigating the case, mentioned a Hindustan Times report.

Residents in the area reportedly started a flash protest in front of the unit. Vinod, a resident who lives near the factory told Hindustan Times that this was not the first time such an incident occurred at the unit. The resident said that they had told the management of the chemical factory that residents were facing problems due to their output. The resident added that the area was covered with smoke after the blast which concerned them.

46-year-old maintenance contractor Rob Cranston was repairing a mixing vessel during a planned maintenance shutdown on July 27, 2018. Officials believe that flammable Toluene vapor was accidentally ignited by the man’s welding torch or a grinder. The harmful vapors are typically removed from the vessel before work commences. Cranston’s 22-year-old son Owen was working next to him when the fatal blast occurred.

“This was a complex and highly technical investigation, due to the chemical hazards on the site and the number of underlying issues which combined to cause the explosion,” HSE Inspector Frances Bailey, the leader of the three-year investigation, said in a statement. “HSE hope that this case helps to communicate important safety messages to wider industry so that other fires and explosions are prevented in the future.”

HSE investigators determined that a quantity of Toluene residue had been left inside the vessel after a shutdown cleaning that took place in June 2018. Two valves in a Toluene supply pipe above the vessel were damaged and leaking.

NORTH SMITHFIELD – A North Smithfield trucking company has agreed to pay a $314,658 penalty for alleged violations of federal chemical safety regulations at its Industrial Drive facility.

N&D Transportation Company of 100 Industrial Drive was accused by the Environmental Protection Agency of violating chemical accident prevention measures and reporting requirements mandated by federal law. The company agreed to a settlement of $314,658 to resolve the violations.

According to a press release from the EPA, an inspection uncovered several concerns at the facility, including incompatible chemicals improperly stored together, water reactive chemicals kept near a sprinkler system, a failure to submit a Clean Air Act risk management plan, a failure to conduct a process hazard analysis and a failure to submit reports to state and local planning authorities.

The EPA also said that local and state fire personnel were apparently unaware that “extremely hazardous substances” were stored at the facility.

The extremely hazardous substances discovered at the facility include formaldehyde, toluene diisocyanate (TDI), peracetic acid and sulfuric acid. The EPA said the alleged violations have since been corrected.

While the EPA did not discover any actual release of chemicals at the site, Dave Deegan, spokesperson for the EPA, said the failure to notify local authorities could have posed a risk to emergency responders.

N. SMITHFIELD, R.I. – Under a recent settlement with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), N&D Transportation Company, Inc. has corrected alleged violations of chemical safety regulations and will pay a settlement penalty of $314,658 to settle claims that the company violated chemical accident prevention laws at its facility in North Smithfield, Rhode Island.

The settlement resolves EPA claims that the company violated chemical accident prevention provisions of the Clean Air Act and chemical inventory reporting requirements of the Emergency Planning and Community Right-to-Know Act (EPCRA).

"EPA's enforcement action, and the company's subsequent actions in response to it, have resulted in a safer facility and helped protect human health and the environment in the surrounding community," said EPA New England Acting Regional Administrator Deborah Szaro. "This settlement demonstrates that chemical accident prevention requirements of the Clean Air Act and EPCRA are in place for a reason and shows EPA's dedication to working with facilities to ensure chemical safety compliance."

EPA alleged that between 2015 and 2020, the company violated the Clean Air Act by failing to comply with chemical and process hazard safety requirements under both "general duty clause" (GDC) and "risk management program" (RMP) provisions, and violated EPCRA by failing to properly prepare and submit EPCRA chemical inventory reports for numerous chemicals present at its 100 Industrial Drive facility. "Extremely hazardous substances" (EHS) requiring reporting at the facility included formaldehyde, toluene diisocyanate (TDI), peracetic acid, and sulfuric acid.

The N&D facility is situated near a tributary of the Blackstone River as well as many businesses and residences, the closest of which is under a tenth of a mile away. An EPA inspection of the facility raised concerns regarding facility safety. Significant allegations included the failure to ensure incompatible chemicals were stored separately and to keep water-reactive chemicals away from the sprinkler system, failure to submit a Clean Air Act risk management plan, failure to conduct a process hazard analysis for the warehouse operation, and failure to submit complete, timely EPCRA "Tier II" reports with all state and local planning and response authorities. One of EPA's most serious claims is that, until the inspection, it appeared local and state fire and emergency response personnel were largely unaware of the presence of EHSs and many other chemicals at the facility, thereby putting at risk

A Shrewsbury man has been sued for illegally demolishing a backyard shed containing dynamite, causing a hazardous fire and explosion in the fall of 2016, Attorney General Maura Healey announced Wednesday.

On Oct. 24, 2016, Edgar Muntz Jr. directed P&M Asphalt Services Inc. of Sutton to demolish an old wooden shed at 393 Oak St. and to remove the construction and demolition debris from the property. Mr. Muntz, who lives at 10 Grove Meadow Lane, owned the 393 Oak St. property as trustee of 393 Oak Street Realty Trust.

Inside the shed were about 550 glass jars and other containers holding hazardous materials, including dynamite, hydrofluoric acid, mercury, sodium cyanide, arsenic, chloroform, toluene, and chromium, according to a complaint filed by the attorney general’s office in Suffolk Superior Court.

During demolition the shed caught fire, releasing hazardous materials to the air and soil, according to the attorney general’s office. The fumes caused P&M workers and a neighbor to suffer chest, throat, and respiratory discomfort, the lawsuit says.

After a neighbor alerted authorities to the explosion, the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection, along with other state and local agencies, took remedial action to secure the site and clean up the hazardous materials.

P&M workers previously had knocked down a house on the property. They backfilled the cellar hole of the demolished house using soil mixed with debris from the shed. That debris included jugs and plastic containers, some labeled “Poison,” that held bright multicolored powders, some of which were spilling out of cracked and broken containers, the lawsuit says.

The samples will be collected Friday and will be tested for such chemicals as benzene and toluene.

Elena Craft, a senior health scientist at the Environmental Defense Fund, said the researchers will get real-time results for most pollutants. She said samples will also be collected to test for perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl compounds, or PFAS, which are found in foam firefighters were using Thursday to prevent flare-ups at ITC in Deer Park.

CAMP HILL, Pa.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sep 13, 2018--Rite Aid Corporation (NYSE: RAD) today announced that the company has established its Chemical Policy and expanded Restricted Substances List as part of ongoing efforts to continue meeting customer expectations for chemical management and product safety.
Rite Aid has been working closely with supplier partners to eliminate eight high-priority chemicals from formulated private brand items since 2016. These chemicals include triclosan, formaldehyde, toluene, butylparaben, propylparaben, dibutyl phthalate, diethyl phthalate and nonylphenol ethoxylates. As a result, the vast majority of the company’s private brand portfolio currently complies with these standards and Rite Aid remains on track to fully eliminate these chemicals from private brand items by 2020.
Rite Aid has also expanded its Restricted Substances List (RSL) to go beyond these eight high-priority chemicals as well as existing U.S. regulatory requirements. The expanded RSL brings additional parabens, phthalates, nonylphenol ethoxylates (NPEs) and formaldehyde donors within the scope of Rite Aid’s efforts to reduce the use of chemicals of concern, bringing the total number of restricted chemicals from eight to 69. Rite Aid’s updated RSL, as well as the complete policy, can be found at www.riteaid.com/corporate/chemical-policy.

Around 4 p.m., Newburyport Fire Chief Christopher LeClaire said firefighters were dispatched to Innocor Foam Technologies, at 122 Parker St., for a report of a chemical spill.

When they arrived, firefighters determined four employees needed to be decontaminated at the scene after coming into contact with toluene. About about 10 to 15 gallons of the chemical spilled from a pipe, LeClaire said. According to its website, the company produces innovative foams for bedding materials, furniture and packaging.

The four employees were taken to an area hospital with injuries that are not believed to be life threatening, LeClaire added.

While attention has zeroed in on the crisis at the Arkema chemical plant in Crosby, Tex., other facilities — oil refineries, chemical plants and shale drilling sites — have been reporting flaring, leaks and chemical discharges triggered by Harvey.

Emissions have already exceeded permitted levels, after floating rooftops sank on oil storage tanks, chemical storage tanks overflowed with rainwater, and broken valves and shutdown procedures triggered flaring at refineries.

The chemicals released in the week after Harvey made landfall, including benzene, 1,3-butadiene, hexane, hydrogen sulfide, sulfur dioxide, toluene and xylene.

Part of a 187-car CSX train derailed early today near York Street and North Wheeling Street in East Toledo.

Two cars carrying toluene, a highly-flammable chemical, overturned. However, a Toledo fire dispatcher said neither car is leaking any fluid.

Toledo fire Lt. Matthew Hertzfeld said one of the cars caused damage to a tower supporting high tension power lines, which have dropped slightly. Toledo Fire and Toledo Edison are on scene.

Two homes in the area were evacuated as a precaution.

The data -- which also showed elevated levels of the suspected carcinogens vinyl chloride, butadiene and styrene and higher levels of toluene at air monitoring devices in neighborhoods near the fire -- was revealed Wednesday by the state Department of Environmental Conservation.

DEC and state health officials said the results were not unlike what would be expected to occur in the air nearby a large industrial fire like the one that erupted at the former Bethlehem Steel plant coal mill on Route 5 in Lackawanna.

"They found what we expect to be typical constituents of fires," said Dr. Nathan Graber, of the state health department's Center for Environmental Health. during a conference call Wednesday.

Eleven people were cared for by ambulance staff after experiencing dizziness and facial numbness, said police.

The affected premises in Solna municipality in Stockholm county house both the Karolinska Institute and the Royal Institute of Technology as well as several privately-owned companies, wrote Aftonbladet.

The Swedish tabloid reported that the leak was believed to have started on the seventh floor of the building in a laboratory area used by a biochemical company which also is located in the building.

"There has been a discharge of gas in this room. It is probably the chemical toluene. In concentrated form it constitutes a fire and explosion hazard," police spokesperson Sven-Erik Olsson told the newspaper.

Police and emergency services examined the building, which was cordoned off between 1pm and 3pm.

One of the individuals affected by the incident was Sci Life Lab safety officer, Erik Malm.

"It's OK now, it was something chemical," he told news agency TT. "There was a strong chemical smell on a couple of floors, but we haven't been able to locate a source," he added.

Police later said that there was no longer any risk of explosion and no suspicion of any criminal activity.

"An unknown person had spilled or thrown the substance in a bin. A cleaner had then brought the substance into the room," confirmed police spokesperson Albin Näverberg to TT.

Environmental Protection Agency officials released more information about chemicals detected at an abandoned oil drum operation at Marco Avenue and Market Street.

Thousands of steel and plastic containers at the site have been leaking toxins into the ground, contaminating water wells and creating significant fire hazards, NewsWest 9 previously reported.

Approximately 15,000 drums were left on the 4.5-acre plot of land after a company that operated under the names "Ector Drum" and "Lone Star Drum" went out of business in 2011, according to Bill Rhotenberry, a federal on-scene coordinator with the EPA.

"We're seeing some BTEX chemicals [at the site]," he told NewsWest 9. "Those are volatile chemicals that are commonly found in crude oil and oil field chemicals."

"BTEX" chemicals include benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and xylenes. Prolonged exposure to the chemicals has been linked to brain damage, increased risk of cancer and groundwater contamination.

At 3:46 p.m., the Amarillo Fire Department responded to reports of a hazardous chemical spill on St. Francis Avenue, just east of River Road.

Upon arrival, the first crew found a 300 gallon container of liquid had fallen onto the side of the roadway. The liquid was running downhill and had traveled about 100 feet.

Firefighters determined that the liquid was an emulsifier used at oil fields and contained a highly flammable chemical known as toluene. About 150 gallons of the chemical had leaked out.

A hazardous material team was called out and quickly created a dam to stop forward progress of the chemical. The team also created a 150-foot perimeter around the spill, closing two westbound lanes near the intersection of St. Francis Avenue and River Road.

An environmental expert says evacuation of the area around Wednesday’s mammoth warehouse blast in the Chinese port city of Tianjin is the “main priority,” and warned of the explosion’s long term consequences.

His words came as the death toll continued to rise, with at least 50 people dead and over 500 hospitalized, of which 71 are in critical condition, officials said Thursday. Several of the dead are reportedly firefighters.

“With a blast like this, normally you would expect the transport [of particulate matter] to be along the wind gradient or contours, but a blast this big must push it beyond that in the opposite direction,” Ravi Naidu, Director of the Global Centre for Environmental Remediation at the University of Newcastle Australia, told TIME. “Not just people but animals and other organisms would be exposed to certain chemicals.”

Rescue operations have been temporarily suspended while chemical teams scan the area for harmful materials as fears of airborne toxins mount.

“We are concerned that certain chemicals will continue to pose a risk to the residents of Tianjin,” Greenpeace Asia’s Beijing office said to TIME in an emailed statement. “According to the Tianjin Tanggu Environmental Monitoring Station, hazardous chemicals [that may have been at the blast site] include sodium cyanide (NaCN), toluene diisocyanate (TDI) and calcium carbide (CaC2), all of which pose direct threats to human health on contact. NaCN in particular is highly toxic. Ca(C2) and TDI react violently with water and reactive chemicals, with risk of explosion. This will present a challenge for firefighting and, with rain forecast for tomorrow, is a major hazard.”

People up to 20 miles away from the site of the chemical explosions that devastated the Chinese port city of Tianjin could be in danger from the fallout.

“People within the first couple of miles [surrounding the blast] could be severely endangered from poisonous gas,” says Rick Hind, legislative director of Greenpeace’s toxics campaign. Investigators have set up 12 air-quality monitoring stations that have shown levels of toluene, used in solvents and gas to improve octane ratings, that surpass the national standard. Prolonged exposure to the chemical can harm the central nervous system or respiratory system.

“It would be harmful if you breathe in [this toxic air] for a long time,” Wen Wurui, the head of Tianjin’s environmental protection bureau, told the BBC. “But at present, it has not exceeded [the standard] too much based on our monitoring.”

Hind says the bigger risk in the world’s 10th-largest port—beyond airborne chemicals—are any other petrochemicals being stored and transported in the area. “The first mile or two is key. As we saw in video, whole buildings collapsed a mile away. If there was another tank of poisonous gas, like chlorine, then more people could be at risk.

The building was evacuated and the spill was being cleaned, according to the St. Louis Fire Department. Nobody was injured and nobody had to be treated.

The chemical is toluene, which is used as a solvent.

St. Louis Fire Department Capt. Garon Mosby said workers were mixing toluene with water as part of their normal manufacturing process when some spilled.

Members of the hazardous materials task force were at the scene, but members of Mallinckrodt’s own fire department were taking care of the situation, said Mosby.

“We followed standard procedures and took immediate actions at our St. Louis site to quickly and effectively address the situation,” according to a statement from Mallinckrodt. “The public was never exposed to any risk, and no property was damaged.

Exposure to toxins, she says, have left her with chronic headaches, nausea and a hesitancy to have more children.

"I've decided having another baby is probably not going to happen for me. I'm too scared of what the health effects might be," said Lane, 28, of Little Rock, a mother of one and an environmental health advocate who has led citizen groups in tracking threats from hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, operations.

A paper published Friday in Reviews on Environmental Health may give credence to her personal suspicions. The paper suggests that even tiny doses of benzene, toluene and other chemicals released during the various phases of oil and natural gas production, including fracking, could pose serious health risks -- especially to developing fetuses, babies and young children.

"We hear a lot of anecdotal stories all the time," said Dr. Sheila Bushkin-Bedient, of the Institute for Health and the Environment at University at Albany-SUNY and co-author on the paper, "but now that we've had a decade of opportunity to observe the ill effects from these chemicals on people and animals, the evidence is no longer just anecdotal."

More than a year after the November 2012 train derailment in Paulsboro spewed vinyl chloride, sparking a litany of lawsuits, a South Jersey native has staged a play inspired by the accident.

Written by 2002 Paulsboro High School alumna Nicole Pandolfo, Pump is a fictionalized version of the aftermath of the derailment, which in the play releases toxic toluene.

Pump, Pandolfo's master's thesis at Hunter College, was put on as a workshop production Thursday through Saturday on the college campus as part of the annual Hunter Playwrights Festival.

ADAMS COUNTY, Pa. - A tractor trailer chemical fire at the Knouse Foods plant in Orrtanna sent nine people to the hospital and caused numerous challenges for emergency responders Tuesday morning.

Emergency crews were first called to the plant around 8:30 a.m. after a tractor trailer carrying chemicals caught fire.

Units from volunteer fire companies in Cashtown, Fairfield and Gettysburg were initially dispatched to the incident. At the time, units did not know exactly what sort of materials were in the trailer, owned by a contractor at the Knouse facility. Around 8:48 a.m. the company advised Adams County 911 that the trailer was holding a product known as spectra-shield and the Material Safety Data Sheet provided showed a primary ingredient of the product was toluene.

The Material Safety Data Sheet indicated toluene is highly flammable, and that the smoke burning from toluene can cause irritation to exposed skin and eyes.
Due to the large quantity of smoke burning from the trailer, as well as the strong winds, the Adams County Department of Emergency Services announced anyone within one-half mile of the Knouse facility remain in their homes, residence, or work place with windows and doors shut.

The information request stems from questions cropping up in evaluations that EU countries conducted for these compounds in 2012. Last week, the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) announced that in March and April it will provide draft evaluations to manufacturers of the 32 chemicals. ECHA will ask the companies for additional hazard or exposure information that would address questions raised in the drafts. Companies have 30 days to respond. Affected substances include bisphenol A, hydroquinone, methanol, and triclosan. ECHA said there was no need for further data on the other four chemicals evaluated—ethylene oxide, tributyl phosphate, toluene diisocyanate, and toluene. Also last week, ECHA unveiled a proposal to list 10 more chemicals as candidates for strict REACH regulation. Among those substances are surfactants including 4-nonylphenol ethoxylates and perfluorooctanoic acid and its ammonium salt.

It happened at around 11:15am at Dyna Drill Technology in the 4600 block of World Houston Parkway, just south of the big airport. A chemical reaction produced thick, light yellow smoke at the facility. The leaking chemicals were identified as Toluene, Thixon and Zonyl.

By 3:20pm, the Houston Fire Department had the leak secured. All employees were accounted for and workers exiting the plant were decontaminated.

An unknown amount of toluene was spilled at the American Synthetic Rubber Company at 4500 Camp Ground Road, according to MetroSafe Communications. The incident was reported at 6:09 p.m.

Three employees came in contact with the chemical, and one was taken to the hospital as a precaution because the liquid got in his eye, said Chief John Wilkinson of the Lake Dreamland Fire Department.

The spill, which may have been caused by a broken flange, was contained in one building at the plant, Wilkinson said.

Tuesday's explosion in New Iberia is raising concerns from doctors and chemists. Some of those chemicals involved in the explosion could cause side effects for people nearby. A few of the chemicals used at the plant include xylene, toluene and methanol. All, highly explosive chemicals. Now, residents are voicing some health complaints in the aftermath.

"It's unusual," one resident said. "I wasn't feeling the same after I left."

He complained of being light-headed and experienced some headaches. It's statements like that are common in New Iberia now, after a chemical explosion rocked some nearby homes.
Louisiana's Department of Environmental Quality says air measurements in the area are at safe levels but experts say there are some risks.

"If you around this fire and breathed in some of the smoke and fumes, you'll probably have some symptoms," Dr. Gary Guidry said.

Dr. Guidry is a pulmonologist at Lafayette General. In short, he studies lungs.
Guidry says if chemicals like xylene and methanol are airborne, it won't take much to start seeing side effects.

"Headache, nausea, vomiting, CNS (central nervous system) depression," he listed. "For toluene, they can go into pulmonary edema which is fluid building up in the lungs."

The list of possible problems doesn't just stop with people. Chemist Wilma Subra says the affected area also includes local farms and food supplies.

No one was injured in the incident, which happened in a building that produces cosmetics and cosmetic materials.

Alton Trahan, spokesman for the Lafayette Fire Department, said the chemical is toluene and is leaking from a container in the building.

The building has been evacuated, and employees in surrounding buildings are being told to remain inside. The chemical is considered highly flammable and has leaked into portions of the first and second floors.

This is not the first time authorities have been called to the business for a similar situation, Trahan said.

Motorists suffered a lot as traffic got diverted after heavy vehicles turned turtle on the main roads in Habsiguda and Saifabad on Thursday morning.

At about 5.30 am, a tanker (AP 16 TW 6433) carrying 25 tons of highly inflammable `Toulene' chemical from Kakinada port to Jeedimetla overturned after hitting the retaining wall of the Tarnaka flyover at its entry point. As a result, motorists were forced to take a detour and travel 13 kilometres extra to reach their workplaces.

Immediately after the accident, the driver fled from the spot as the chemical began leaking onto the Uppal main road.

Police were immediately alerted about the incident and after consulting the fire department officials, cops learnt that the material was highly inflammable and immediately blocked the road at Habsiguda and Mettuguda ends and diverted traffic through Nacharam.

It’s been an unusually cold December thus far, and the frigid conditions have caused problems countywide – including the spillage of up to 400 gallons of a volatile chemical.

Three Nashville-based emergency management agencies were called but no local officials were notified of the spill, which took place at Quad/Graphics in Dickson and involved the same chemical that severely burned and ultimately killed an employee in August.

The spill occurred early Dec. 10 at the Quad/Graphics plant in the county industrial park when an ice chunk fell and struck a handle, opening a valve on the facility’s solvent recovery system and released 300-400 gallons of toluene, a chemical solvent.

Claire Ho, a Quad/Graphics corporate spokesperson, said the chemical drained across a concrete pad and into a grate, which led to a “drainage ditch” where the spill collected.

The ditch and grate are not connected to the public sewer system, Ho said.

The derailment started a fire on one of the cars, causing it to explode. Thick black smoke and intense flames billowed out, fueled by what the car was hauling: toluene, a chemical used in paint thinners, according to Sugar Creek authorities.

The toluene rail car sparked a nearby car, carrying animal fat, and then a third car, carrying oil.

No one was hurt and no residents had to be evacuated.
Authorities initially let the cars burn. Later in the morning, firefighters cooled the remaining tanks to ensure other cars didn’t catch fire.

A HAZMAT unit was called in to clean up the site and ensure chemicals from derailed cars did not spread into nearby waterways.
