WEATHERSFIELD — Firefighters from four Trumbull County communities worked Tuesday to battle a fire at the Howmet Aerospace plant, 1000 Warren Ave., that began when titanium dust caught a vacuum truck and a hopper on fire.

Howmet supplies titanium alloys for the aerospace industry.

But because titanium dust is a magnesium-based product, it is highly flammable and it cannot be extinguished with water, according to Weathersfield fire Chief Tom Lambert.

The fire began in a vacuum hose when a contracting company was removing dust particles from a hopper in the plant. The flames moved from the hose back into the plant area, damaging some equipment, according to Lambert.

The plant contacted Trumbull County 911, which contacted the Weathersfield Fire Department at 8:09 a.m. Fire departments in Lordstown, Niles and Howland responded to the emergency call.

Cloth Face Masks Containing Silver: Evaluating the Status

Amid the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic, demand for cloth face masks containing nanosilver has increased. Common product claims such as “antiviral” and “antimicrobial” can be attractive to buyers seeking to protect themselves from this respiratory disease, but it is important to note that filtration capabilities are the main factor to prevent virus transmission and that antimicrobial ability is a secondary protection factor. Silver has long been known to be antibacterial, and growing research supports additional antiviral properties. In this study, 40 masks claiming to contain silver were evaluated for substantiated antiviral and antimicrobial claims using methods available to the public. Criteria for determining the validity of substantiated claims included the use of patented technology, international certification for antimicrobial and/or antiviral textile by ISO or ASTM, EPA pesticide registration, and peer-reviewed literature. Our analysis showed that, of the 40 masks, 21 had substantiated claims. Using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), two of the substantiated face masks (A and B) were examined for silver identification for further confirmation. Mask A uses silver and copper ions attached to zeolite particles; the zeolite particles discovered through SEM were approximately 90–200 nm in diameter. In mask B, particles of silver and titanium at the 250 nm size were found. In conclusion, these certifications or patents are not enough to determine credibility, and stricter regulations by federal agencies on product testing for manufacturers that make claims are necessary to ensure the efficacy of the product advertised, as well as a cloth face mask inhalation standard.

According to the department, the incident started just before 3 p.m. near the intersection of Balboa Avenue and Ponderosa Avenue near Montgomery-Gibbs Executive Airport.

According to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department, workers at Senior Aerospace Jet Products routinely put titanium shavings in barrels.

Monday afternoon, one of the barrels, a 55-gallon drum, began to get hot and started expanding.

Firefighters arrived at the business and poured water on top of the barrel to cool the contents after evacuating the building.

The bomb squad and hazmat technicians were also called to the scene and, after opening the barrel, say the titanium was reacting with another chemical.

PARKERSBURG — Two days after a fire erupted at the former Ames plant, a class action lawsuit was filed Monday in the office of the Wood County Circuit Court clerk.

Kathy A. Brown, an attorney with Brown-Houston PLLC in Charleston,W.Va., filed the suit on behalf of Timothy Callihan and others. Defendants named in the suit are Surnaik Holdings of West Virginia LLC, SirNaik LLC, Polymer Alliance Services LLC, Green Sustainable Solutions LLC and Intercontinental Export Import Inc.

In the filing the plaintiffs are seeking declaratory, injunctive and equitable relief, as well as compensatory and punitive damages, and costs incurred by the plaintiffs for what they term as the “intentional, knowing, reckless and negligent acts and omissions of defendants in connection with their management, operation and occupation” of the former Ames shovel plant on Camden Avenue.

According to the lawsuit, Callihan lives about two miles from the facility on 27th Avenue. At about 1 a.m. Oct. 21 a fire broke out which leveled the 40,000 square feet facility located in a largely residential area.

According to the suit the items in the plant included stryene-acrylonitrile, formaldehyde, titanium dixodie, carbon black and PTFE, also known as Teflon. More than 20 area fire companies in six counties from West Virginia and Ohio responded to the site, the suit states.

Hard evidence has emerged that nano-sized particles from tattoo inks travel from the skin where they’re embedded to a person’s lymph nodes, where they get stuck.
Tattoo inks contain a wide range of chemicals and heavy metals, including some that are potentially toxic. Because of concerns about this potential toxicity, last year, the Joint Research Centre, which provides advice to the European Commission, issued a report highlighting the need for funding into research on tattoo ink toxicity and how tattoo inks break down in the body.
Plenty of circumstantial evidence exists to show that tattoo pigments travel around the body, says Ines Schreiver, a researcher at the German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment in Berlin. “Physicians had seen that lymph tissue of tattooed people was colored,” she explains, but details about the pigments in the lymph nodes, which act as filters for the human body and are an important part of the immune system, are scarce.
With skin and lymph tissue samples from four deceased tattooed individuals, as well as two nontattooed individuals, in hand, Schreiver and her colleagues set out to investigate. Using matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI/TOFMS), the team found the same organic pigments, including pthalocyanines and azo compounds, in the skin and lymph samples from the tattooed individuals (Sci. Rep. 2017, DOI: 10.1038/s41598-017-11721-z). “This is hard proof that what you find in the lymph is from the tattoos,” Schreiver says.
Using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), the researchers detected higher levels of certain inorganic elements in both the skin and lymph nodes of the tattooed subjects compared with those without tattoos. Those elements included titanium, aluminum, chromium, nickel, and other metals. Some of these elements, which tattoo inks contain as preservatives or contaminants, are known to be toxic.

On Tuesday morning, the Detroit Fire Department fought fire with dry sand and rock salt at a plant on the city’s east side.

It all started with a “minor explosion” in a machine that processes magnesium at the Global Titanium plant on the 19300 block of Filer. This was at about 5:10 a.m., said Dave Fornell, deputy commissioner of the Detroit Fire Department. That’s north of East Seven Mile, and just east of Mount Elliott.

Of the three buildings on site, the explosion took place in a building where the company processes magnesium.

When firefighters arrived, the fire had spread to two storage bins, Fornell said.

“Magnesium, when it ignites, it burns with a white-hot heat, and you can’t use water to put it out,” Fornell said. “The water turns to steam and causes minor explosions, which spreads the material.”

There was also titanium involved.

Such a fire can’t be extinguished with water, Fornell said; it must be smothered with dry sand. In this case, dry sand and rock salt. And unlike at most of the blazes the department fights, this time workers at the site “worked hand-in-hand” with firefighters over the next hour. The sand and rock salt were already on site.

According to Orange County Fire Authority’s Capt. Larry Kurtz, this isn’t the first time golfers have yelled “Fire!” instead of “Fore!”

Arroyo Trabuco Golf Course has seen more than just yesterday’s wildfire on its grounds. At the same course, another brush fire started in a similar situation in 2013.

“I just punched a 3-iron to get to the ball back in play,” golfer Steve Parsons told the Orange County Register after the 2013 incident. The next thing he knew, he was standing in “a ring of fire.”

On that day, the wind changed direction, and the fire burned itself out. The golfers escaped with no more than singed legs and a lesson about golfing with titanium clubs.

A metal forging company about a half-mile from Cy-Fair High School stores 27 chemicals, including titanium, a material that blew up at a golf club manufacturer in Los Angeles and leveled a city block.

And in Crosby, a public sports complex is close to a plant that houses explosive organic peroxides, a class of chemicals used in terror attacks in Paris and Brussels.

All over America and across greater Houston, capital of the nation’s petrochemical industry, hundreds of chemicals pose serious threats to public safety at facilities that may be unknown to most neighbors and are largely unpoliced by government at all levels, a yearlong Houston Chronicle investigation reveals.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration doesn’t inspect most facilities; when it does, it’s often due to an accident or complaint. The Environmental Protection Agency ignores entire classes of hazardous chemicals when looking at which sites to scrutinize. Texas and other states have made accessing information about chemical stockpiles more difficult. Wayne Briley, director of the Redwood Empire Hazardous Incident Team (REHIT), said the City of Ukiah's Public Works Department called him at 8 a.m. Tuesday Dec. 2 after a milky white substance was seen heading toward the storm drains.

"The only thing that should be going down the drain is rainwater, so it was a pretty easy call," said Briley, explaining that roofers had put a white coating on the roof of the building last week, then a spray foam was to be applied afterward.

"One of three things happened: did they not put it on correctly, did it not get enough time to dry, or did the product fail?" Briley said, guessing that the situation will lead to a lawsuit. "Either way, roofing material is not supposed to wash away in the rain."

Briley said the chemical in the material of most concern was titanium dioxide, which he said is a carcinogen and officials did not want it reaching the creeks.

Fire officials said they were forced to use a salt compound to suppress the blaze at ITPS Inc. in Niles Commerce Park between Niles and Warren's southeast side.

Weathersfield fire department was called to the scene about 9:40 a.m., Saturday, by the company that said 18 to 20 barrels of chemicals inside its warehouse were on fire.

Fire Chief Randall Pugh said ITPS Inc. accepts 55-gallon barrels of material from steel making companies that contain titanium, nickel and chromium.

"Because the barrels had a combination of chemicals that include titanium, nickel and chromium, we could not use water to put out the fire, because water would have caused the titanium to explode," Pugh said.

Because there was concern about the various chemicals at the site, the fire departments called in the Trumbull County Hazmat and the Ohio EPA to monitor what was being done.

The agreement resolves the alleged Clean Air Act violations that stemmed from an explosion at the company's New Cumberland facility that killed three people.

AL Solutions recycles titanium and zirconium raw materials for use as alloying additives by aluminum producers.

Three employees who had been handling zirconium powder at the company's former plant in New Cumberland died in December 2010 after an explosion that may have been caused by an accidental release of the chemical.

Debris from the explosion destroyed the production area of the facility, and was scattered into area yards.

EPA Regional Administrator Shawn Garvin said EPA and OSHA worked together after the explosion to coordinate an investigation and to share information.

Upon arrival, units from both UFPD and GFR assisted the injured person, UF student Zhi Zhou, 27, and secured the lab where the incident occurred. Zhou was transported to Shands at UF medical center with non-life threatening injuries.
After the GFR Hazmat Unit cleared the lab where the minor explosion occurred, it was determined that the materials involved were hydrochloric acid, tetrachloride, titanium and water, which were combined and heated in a 30-milliliter beaker. Given the small and contained nature of the explosion, the building was not evacuated.
All units from UFPD and GFR cleared the scene by 11:43 am, with only staff from the University of Florida Environmental Health & Safety, and Physical Plant Division completing follow-on tasks.

The spill was something of a hydroflouric nitric acid combo, said Corah, and was caused around 6:15 p.m. when "A huge chunk of titanium got spilled into a vat of acid."

The initial call came in at about 5:30 p.m. and the incident was "still off-gassing" after 7 p.m., according to Corah.

Steve McAdoo with Clackamas Fire said most chemicals of that substance dissipate when released into the air.

The dumpster, which contained titanium shavings, was located at the Twelve Trees business park, on Pioneer Way just off Highway 3. Hazmat crews chose to allow the fire to burn itself out, as water or foam could make the fire worse. Firefighters cooled the nearby structure and the outside of the dumpster with water to prevent more ignitions.
Battalion Chief Chris Morrison said, “Our main concern with this type of fire is to keep the area clear of bystanders, as the fumes can be hazardous to your health. There was also some concern about an underground gas line that led to nearby propane tanks, and there were barrels that contained oil products in close proximity. We wanted to ensure the fire didn’t get too hot and spread to the nearby building.” The business uses titanium to make prosthetic limbs and the business manager said an employee was attempting to weld a crack in the dumpster when the contents ignited. There were no injuries from the fire extinguished itself in just under 3 hours.

A 6-foot by 12-foot room where titanium is kept caught fire about 10:15 a.m. inside Pro-Fab, 900 N Morgan Road, said fire Battalion Chief Tommy Iago.

No one was injured, but employees were evacuated until firefighters could get chemicals from Will Rogers World Airport to use on the fire.

Titanium was still smoldering about noon, Iago said, but the fire was under control.

Iago did not know the cause and did not have a damage estimate.

Titanium is scraped off airplane parts at the plant, and somehow dust or particles ignited, Iago said.

Oklahoma City and airport firefighting crews wore protective gear to clean up the chemical fire.

The fire was contained to the room where the titanium is stored.

Four people were taken to hospital today with chemical burns from a cloud of toxic gas after an explosion at a factory on the river Humber near Grimsby.
The casualties also inhaled toxic fumes after titanium tetrachloride gas escaped from the Cristal Global chemical plant, Humber coastguard said. One of the injured was transferred to a specialist burns unit at Pinderfields hospital in Wakefield, West Yorkshire and all shipping in the estuary was halted for several hours.
