SIDNEY — A chemical leak at the Sidney-Shelby County YMCA closed the facility Monday night. The Y reopened Tuesday with the exception of the pool which remains closed. Classes, program and Child Watch were closed until 3 p.m. Tuesday. The Child Development Center was closed Tuesday but will reopen Wednesday.

According to the Sidney Fire Department press release, at 7:22 pm on May 22, Sidney firefighters were dispatched to 300 E. Parkwood at the Sidney-Shelby County YMCA for a chemical reaction in the basement. The original call stated that the chemical was 10 ounces of Chlorine poured into a 40-gallon tank of Sulfuric Acid creating a chlorine gas in the basement.

Upon the Sidney Fire Department’s arrival, they found a large commercial building with no evacuation in progress. Crews made entry with a series of detectors and confirmed that there was an active chemical reaction in a labeled Sulfuric Acid container in the basement. Chlorine gas substance was emitting from the 40-gallon tank of Sulfuric Acid.

Crews assisted in the evacuation of the building. Firefighters and the Shelby County Hazmat team mitigated the situation with offloading the chemical into an over pack drum while conducting air monitoring throughout the building.

A safer, convenient, and scalable synthesis for 3,4-bis(4-nitro-1,2,5-oxadiazol-3-yl)-1,2,5-oxadiazole-2-oxide (BNFF or DNTF) is described. The obtained products were fully characterized and further confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The reaction process of tandem nitration–cyclization was optimized, and the thermal stability of the optimal reaction system was studied. 3-Amino-4-(carboxymethyl)furazan is oxidized and then treated with dilute mixed acid (HNO3 and H2SO4) to obtain BNFF in a yield of 52% and a purity of 99% after liquid chromatography analysis. Compared with some previously reported multistep methods that relied on high-concentration hydrogen peroxide solutions and suffered from dangerous exothermic profiles, this new method used to synthesize BNFF promises to be safer and more efficient.

Two men were left needing hospital treatment after being contaminated by sulphuric acid when a hose ‘popped off’ before they were covered with the corrosive substance.

South Central Ambulance Service, including paramedics from the Hazardous Area Response Team, also attended. The casualties were left in their care and taken to Queen Alexandra hospital.

Cosham acting crew manager Lee Merrett said: ‘The incident involved a sulphuric acid container where the hose popped off and squirted the two gentlemen.

‘We cooled down the burns for 20 minutes using hose reels before handing over to Scas. The burns were not too bad but did blister and would have been a lot worse if left.

According to the National Library of Medicine, Oleum is a corrosive and hazardous sulfuric acid. The material is a thick and fuming yellow liquid that is very toxic by inhalation and causes severe burns upon contact.

Upon discovery of the leak Tuesday morning, employees at the facility immediately evaluated the situation and promptly worked to stop the leak. Authorities were notified at the same time, including Hopewell Police and Fire departments, which responded to the site.

There were no reported injuries and the Hopewell plant’s operations continue uninterrupted. The Hopewell Fire Department intends to remain on-site to continue monitoring the situation.

A faulty piece of equipment on a storage tank caused a 2,000-gallon chemical spill at Shell’s Beaver County ethane cracker over the weekend, the company said.

The spill was discovered Saturday morning at 9:30 during a routine inspection, and all chemicals spilled were contained on site. Shell said in a statement the tank was part of the facility’s waste water treatment plant, and contained a mixture of water and sulfuric acid. The company said the chemicals were captured within a built-in secondary containment area.

The company said the spill appears to have been caused by a faulty flange – a collared mechanical fitting often used to join two pieces of equipment together.

“Maintaining environmental compliance and timely reporting of potential incidents are top priorities for Shell,” spokesman Curtis Thomas said in a statement. “We will continue to keep the environmental authorities apprised as we continue our investigation of this matter.”

On Oct. 11, 2008, a tank overfill of oleum (i.e., a solution of sulfur trioxide in sulfuric acid) spread a cloud of toxic and corrosive SO3/H2SO4 mist across three towns in Pennsylvania. Approximately 2,500 people were forced to evacuate or shelter-in-place. Fortunately, no one was seriously injured.

The facility was originally built with one power supply and three plug-in pumps, which prevented more than one pump from being used at a time. To prevent an overfill, the power supply was interlocked to stop the pump when a high-high level was reached in Tank 1501 or Tank 1502. However, in the 1980s, a temporary emergency power supply was added after several power outages in the main system. This emergency system was never added to the piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs) or the operating procedures. Importantly, the high-high level switches (LSHHs) did not control the emergency power supply.

On the day of the incident, an operator began to pump oleum from Tank 610 to Tank 1502. To save time, he plugged another pump into the emergency power supply to transfer oleum from Tank 611 to Tank 1502. This practice had been passed from operator to operator for many years, but it was not documented nor managed within the process safety program. The LSHH was unable to stop the transfer from Tank 611, causing Tank 1502 to overfill and release oleum.

It happened Tuesday, Scott Fire Chief Chad Sonnier said.

He said firefighters were dispatched to a local refuse facility after the employee was reported to have obtained chemical burns from exposure to sulfuric acid which had been improperly placed in a residential trash bin.

The employee was initially transported to a local hospital, Sonnier said.

He was then transferred to the burn center where his condition is listed as serious, but stable.

“Due to the negligence of someone improperly discarding this dangerous material, in the normal trash, an employee received chemicals burns and is being treated at a local hospital,” Sonnier said.

According to Sonnier, the Lafayette Haz-Mat Team, carefully sifted through the remainder of the trash bin, checking its contents, making sure there were no further containers, with hazardous materials present.

Massachusetts Department of Fire Services spokesperson Jake Wark stated that earlier today, a rail car containing 13,000 gallons of pressurized sulfuric acid pulled up next to an Attleboro chemical company for delivery.

But a hose failure caused a large leak, spilling hazardous contents around the area.

Emergency crews and hazmat techs depressurized the tank by offloading some of its contents.

WOOD RIVER - Melissa Erker, Director, Phillips 66-Wood River Refinery, Government and Community Relations Director, released a statement Saturday afternoon about the railroad tank cars that spewed sulfuric acid.

“The Wood River Refinery team has been working with the Wood River Fire Department and Norfolk Southern Railroad at the railcar response in the Norfolk Southern Rail Yard," Erker said. "The priority of the Wood River Refinery is the safety of the community and responders, as well as to provide technical expertise for the response. The refinery has been contacted by the IEPA and Illinois Attorney General’s office about the incident. The refinery is working to respond to the information requests from the state.”

The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency has referred an enforcement action to the Illinois Attorney General’s office against Phillips 66 Company, located at 900 South Central Avenue in Roxana (Madison County).

Between May 28 and May 30, 2021, four railroad tank cars were loaded with spent sulfuric acid originating at the Phillips 66 facility. On June 2, 2021, the tank cars were loaded onto a train on Norfolk Southern Railway and Kansas City Southern Railway rail lines. At approximately 3 p.m., a pressure relief disk on one of the tank cars ruptured and sulfuric acid began venting to the atmosphere. At that time, the train was sitting on the railroad tracks located north of Rand Avenue and east of State Route 3 near Hartford and Wood River. A Kansas City Southern Railway employee was injured during the rupture and was taken to the hospital for treatment and released. During the evening of June 2, two other railcars also began venting sulfuric acid. A fourth rail car began venting the morning of June 3.

According to Wells, it's believed that the sun heated some of the vapors that had cooled overnight, causing them to create a plume. He said it dissipated quickly and Route 3 was reopened, and the shelter in place order for a neighborhood known as, "Little Italy," was lifted.

The hazmat situation began Wednesday afternoon. Norfolk Southern Railroad was notified that a stationary rail car containing spent sulfuric acid was over pressurized and venting. The rail car was part of a group of five picked up from the Phillips 66 refinery and staged while awaiting pickup by KCS Railroad. One worker was overcome by the venting fumes. He was taken to the hospital where he was treated and released. Throughout the night, Norfolk Southern personnel, hazmat crews and local first responders were on scene monitoring and accessing the situation.

It began Wednesday afternoon. Julie Taylor checked on her cousin, who was sheltering in place.

“She’s a little nervous about what’s going on,” she said.

Firefighters from both sides of the river doused over-pressurized train cars, which were venting spent sulfuric acid. Authorities said the air was safe to breathe but still advised people to stay inside and don’t turn on their air conditioners.

“It’s pretty warm inside her house right now it is really warm in there,” Taylor said.

Inhaling the vapor can cause breathing problems. Tim Bond was still holding girls’ softball practice Thursday evening not too far from where the venting is occurring.

NORTH SMITHFIELD – A North Smithfield trucking company has agreed to pay a $314,658 penalty for alleged violations of federal chemical safety regulations at its Industrial Drive facility.

N&D Transportation Company of 100 Industrial Drive was accused by the Environmental Protection Agency of violating chemical accident prevention measures and reporting requirements mandated by federal law. The company agreed to a settlement of $314,658 to resolve the violations.

According to a press release from the EPA, an inspection uncovered several concerns at the facility, including incompatible chemicals improperly stored together, water reactive chemicals kept near a sprinkler system, a failure to submit a Clean Air Act risk management plan, a failure to conduct a process hazard analysis and a failure to submit reports to state and local planning authorities.

The EPA also said that local and state fire personnel were apparently unaware that “extremely hazardous substances” were stored at the facility.

The extremely hazardous substances discovered at the facility include formaldehyde, toluene diisocyanate (TDI), peracetic acid and sulfuric acid. The EPA said the alleged violations have since been corrected.

While the EPA did not discover any actual release of chemicals at the site, Dave Deegan, spokesperson for the EPA, said the failure to notify local authorities could have posed a risk to emergency responders.

N. SMITHFIELD, R.I. – Under a recent settlement with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), N&D Transportation Company, Inc. has corrected alleged violations of chemical safety regulations and will pay a settlement penalty of $314,658 to settle claims that the company violated chemical accident prevention laws at its facility in North Smithfield, Rhode Island.

The settlement resolves EPA claims that the company violated chemical accident prevention provisions of the Clean Air Act and chemical inventory reporting requirements of the Emergency Planning and Community Right-to-Know Act (EPCRA).

"EPA's enforcement action, and the company's subsequent actions in response to it, have resulted in a safer facility and helped protect human health and the environment in the surrounding community," said EPA New England Acting Regional Administrator Deborah Szaro. "This settlement demonstrates that chemical accident prevention requirements of the Clean Air Act and EPCRA are in place for a reason and shows EPA's dedication to working with facilities to ensure chemical safety compliance."

EPA alleged that between 2015 and 2020, the company violated the Clean Air Act by failing to comply with chemical and process hazard safety requirements under both "general duty clause" (GDC) and "risk management program" (RMP) provisions, and violated EPCRA by failing to properly prepare and submit EPCRA chemical inventory reports for numerous chemicals present at its 100 Industrial Drive facility. "Extremely hazardous substances" (EHS) requiring reporting at the facility included formaldehyde, toluene diisocyanate (TDI), peracetic acid, and sulfuric acid.

The N&D facility is situated near a tributary of the Blackstone River as well as many businesses and residences, the closest of which is under a tenth of a mile away. An EPA inspection of the facility raised concerns regarding facility safety. Significant allegations included the failure to ensure incompatible chemicals were stored separately and to keep water-reactive chemicals away from the sprinkler system, failure to submit a Clean Air Act risk management plan, failure to conduct a process hazard analysis for the warehouse operation, and failure to submit complete, timely EPCRA "Tier II" reports with all state and local planning and response authorities. One of EPA's most serious claims is that, until the inspection, it appeared local and state fire and emergency response personnel were largely unaware of the presence of EHSs and many other chemicals at the facility, thereby putting at risk

An unidentified man is allegedly placing cat food in and around the trees in Confederation Park, near the 1000 block of 24 Avenue NW.

According to the police, there have been three separate incidents of this nature reported in March. The fact that this park is frequented by families with young children and pets makes this “even more concerning,” the Calgary Police say.

Investigators have been able to confirm that the food found contained chemicals that are not typically present in cat food products.

By working with the Calgary Fire Department HAZMAT team, investigators identified both sulfuric acid and phenyltoloxamine citrate in the cat food.

These substances could cause unnecessary pain, and potentially death, to an animal, if they were to ingest enough of it.

Changning District People's Court has ruled that Donghua University should pay over 1.62 million (US$250,000) to a student injured in a laboratory explosion in 2016.

Both sides lodged appeals against the ruling on Tuesday, the plaintiff Guo Hongzhen told the Beijing News.

According to the judgment issued by the court in December, in September 2016, three postgraduates from the university’s College of Chemistry, Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology were experimenting with potassium permanganate and concentrated sulfuric acid in the lab. According to media reports, when Guo added 100 grams of potassium permanganate to concentrated sulfuric acid, there was an explosion.

No one wore goggles during the experiment and no university staff were present, including their tutor, surnamed Nie, who had asked them to do the experiment.

Blinded by the chemicals, Guo was sent to Ruijin Hospital for treatment.

He was identified as having a fourth-grade disability, the fourth most serious in a 10-grade system, because of severe visual impairment. His face also suffered an eighth-grade disability.

Guo sued the university in 2019 for over 1.7 million yuan in compensation.

In its ruling in December, the district court said Guo should take a small amount of responsibility for the incident due to his actions and lacks of protection and awarded 1.6 million yuan, 400,000 yuan less than the amount he proposed.

ASHEVILLE, N.C. (WLOS) — It took a regional effort to put out the flames at an industrial facility in Mooresboro on Sunday and Monday.

The fire at American Zinc Recycling is out, but now crews are working to figure out how it started.

Crews worked throughout the night Sunday battling the flames, but there were some set backs and concerns for safety as the industrial fire spewed hazardous chemicals in the air throughout Rutherford County.

Authorities said the main concern was sulfuric acid.

Several departments responded to the fire.

"When you are dealing with hazardous material, that's a little above and beyond your normal structure fire," Kelley Klope, of the Asheville Fire Department, said.

Those hazardous materials, prompted a request for Asheville's Regional Response Team late Sunday night.

The team is made up of 12 members fully suited with air monitors. They are trained to make sure air quality is safe for emergency crews battling the fire.

"You need all the eyes and all the knowledge that you can and all have all the skills you can with all of the equipment we have," Klope said.

JOHOR BARU, March 21 — It was a spill of sulphuric acid that caused a lockdown at the Johor Department of Environment’s (DoE) building here, the authority confirmed today.

Johor DoE director Datuk Mohammad Ezanni Mat Salleh said the spilled chemical was concentrated sulphuric acid.

“Initial investigations revealed that the spilled chemical was only sulphuric acid and contained no other substances.

“The acid was in its pure form and considered highly hazardous if spilled.” said Mohammad Ezanni when contacted by Malay Mail tonight.

Concentrated sulphuric acid is extremely corrosive and can cause serious burns when not handled properly. This hazardous chemical is capable of corroding skin, paper, metals, and even stone in some cases.

If sulphuric acid makes direct contact with the eyes, it can cause permanent blindness. If ingested, this chemical may cause internal burns, irreversible organ damage, and possibly death.

Mohammad Ezanni said the 30-year-old DoE technician involved in the incident is reported to be in stable condition after being treated at the Sultanah Aminah Hospital (HSA) here.

A 54-year-old South Lyon man died Saturday after falling into a chemical vat at Michigan Seamless Tube.

Daniel Hill was found by a co-worker at about 12:20 p.m., fully submerged in sulfuric acid, said South Lyon Fire Chief Robert Vogel.

It was unclear how long Hill was in the vat, in which chemicals were heated to temperatures of 160 degrees.

South Lyon Police Chief Chris Sovik said employees grabbed the man from the vat and took him to a decontamination area as Huron Valley Ambulance medics and South Lyon Fire and Police responded.

Hill was rushed to the University of Michigan Hospital, where he died from his injuries on Saturday night.

POCATELLO, Idaho (KIFI/KIDK) - Pocatello police, the Pocatello Fire Department and several other agencies are working to clean up a massive sulfuric acid spill across multiple roads.

The Pocatello Police Department said the sulfuric acid came from a leak on a flatbed truck that was carrying an 83-gallon tank of the acid. It is 98% sulfuric acid, so it is very concentrated.

There are only about 20 gallons of acid left in the tank, so around 60 gallons of it was spilled on roadways from Soda Springs to Pocatello.

Lt. Whitney with the Pocatello Police Department said the truck left Soda Springs, stopped in Lava Hot Springs at the Sinclair there for fuel, went on U.S. 30, down to Old Highway 91, through Inkom, down Portneuf Road, up Fort Hall Mine Road, to North Main Street to the Gould Street overpass, then North on McKinley to the 700 block.

According to Pocatello police, crews are dealing with spills along all those roads in Bannock County, as well as a few spills in Inkom. There was no reported spill at the gas station.

All those roads, and some nearby roads, are closed off while HAZMAT teams work to clean up the spill and neutralize the acid.

The slow leak, which came from a 400-gallon tank of sulfuric acid, was noticed by an employee around 2:30 p.m. Monday, according to a news release.

Just after 6 p.m., FermiLab officials said the "pinhole-sized leak" was contained and that there had been no harm to the environment. A hazmat crew then came to the scene to clean up any spilled acid and to remove the remainder of the sulfuric acid from the tank.

The sulfuric acid tank, which is used for water treatment, is housed in Fermilab's Central Utility Building. Fermilab Fire Department said there were no injuries to report and there is no risk to those who live nearby.

Teck is working closely with IRM to review their transportation arrangements given these recent incidents, Adair said.

“A full investigation is underway, and the transportation of the product using Westcan as a carrier is suspended until Teck is satisfied it can be transported safely.”

Three firefighters from Station 374 Trail were called to a Hazmat scene near Shavers Bench Wednesday night.

A truck hauling sulphuric acid had “some spills” along Highway 3B, Captain Grant Tyson reported.

First it was lava, then acid rain and vog. Now, residents near Hawaii's erupting Kilauea volcano confronted a new threat Monday: laze, a toxic cloud mashup of lava and haze.

Laze forms when hot, 2,000-degree lava hits the cooler sea water. It's a hydrochloric acid steam cloud that billows into the air, along with fine particles of glass.

"Lava entering the ocean causes a chemical reaction and can result in small explosions, sending tiny particles of hydrochloric acid and volcanic glass in the air," said Jessica Johnson, a geophysicist at the University of East Anglia in the United Kingdom.

The acid in the plume is about as corrosive as diluted battery acid, scientists say. Laze can cause irritations of the skin, eyes and lungs, and those suffering from asthma or emphysema may be particularly vulnerable.

Some 10 staff had to leave the building, he said.

While the incident did not cause any injuries, Rangel said the acid is highly corrosive to human skin. The building also contained Nitric acid. When combined with sulphuric acid, it can cause inhalation damage.

Shortly after arrival, crews found one patient located in a second floor science supply room who was exposed to sulfuric acid. The room was not occupied by students at the time of the emergency. The patient, who is a teacher at La Cumbre Junior High School, was treated on scene by firefighters and transported by AMR to Cottage Hospital where she was later flown by CalStar to a burn center.

The release of an unknown quantity of the hazardous material, along with other unknown chemicals in the near vicinity prompted the quick and timely evacuation of both the main building and cafeteria to isolate exposure to any other staff and students. Incident command worked closely with La Cumbre Junior High administration and Santa Barbara Unified School District officials on the response. Once safe locations were identified, school staff made the determination to keep students on campus and resume normal school sessions.

Santa Barbara South Coast HazMat Response Team was activated which prompted the response of additional resources from Santa Barbara City Fire, Carpinteria-Summerland Fire and Montecito Fire Protection Districts. Each of these departments have specific pre-assigned roles within the team. Santa Barbara City Fire provided a total of 3 fire engines, a HazMat Unit, and a chief officer who was in command of the incident. Carpinteria-Summerland Fire provided an additional vehicle and decontamination trailer. Montecito Fire provided additional HazMat Specialist to support operations.

The Joplin Fire Department responded to Joplin manufacturer Ajinomoto Windsor on Monday night after a fire alarm went off, it said in a news release Tuesday.

Firefighters said plant employees told them of a possible leak in the wastewater treatment building. After inspection, the fire department found that about 5 to 10 gallons of sulfuric acid were spilled onto the ground.

Officials said the spill did not pose a threat to workers or the public. The Joplin Police Department and METS Ambulance Service assisted with the response to the incident.

Once the building was ventilated, plant staff handled the cleanup, the fire department said.

District police chief DSP Azmir Abd Razak said the 33-year-old driver was transporting 32 barrels of 800 liters of sulphuric acid from Sabah Forestry Industry (SFI) to Sepanggar Port in Kota Kinabalu when the 5.10pm incident happened.

“Investigation reveals the driver lost control of the wheel, causing the truck to skid on the road before landing on its side.

“This causes spillage of the liquid onto the road.

“Police were forced to close both ends of the road for safety purposes,” he said, adding that the incident also caused two kilometres of traffic jam.

Turner, who was bound for a Bogalusa paper mill, made it off the bridge onto North Causeway Boulevard in the burning vehicle, stopping just before Brookside Drive.

He and a driver behind him both tried to put out the fire with extinguishers, he said, but without success. Firefighters with St. Tammany Fire Protection District No. 4 then arrived and put out the fire.

The tank was not breached, and no chemicals were spilled, Mandeville Police Chief Gerald Sticker said.

The incident caused some traffic delays. Both sides of North Causeway Boulevard were closed at 10 a.m. as heavy smoke filled the area. By 10:48 a.m., authorities reopened the southbound lanes and one of the northbound lanes. An additional lane on the northbound side was reopened about 1:40 p.m.

He was working in a ‘pitch black’ area of the site when it happened, Preston Crown Court heard.

Mr Crellan, who worked as a chemical process operator, needed surgery after the incident on August 23, 2014.

He was also left with post traumatic stress disorder and has trouble walking.

His employer, AGC Chemicals Europe Ltd, based at Hillhouse International, Thornton, was fined £300,000 over the incident.

The firm, which must also pay £11,275.84 costs, admitted failing to ensure the health and safety of its employees working around harmful substances.

Prosecuting, Sophie Cartwright, said: “David Crellan suffered significant chemical burn injuries to his foot and ankle when 4,000 litres of sulphuric acid of 96 per cent (strength) gushed out of a fractured pipeline he stood on. The hazards are widely known – direct contact with even small quantities can cause serious injury.”

The tractor-trailer that caught fire Monday — paralyzing Interstate 495 for hours — had a “cornucopia” of hazardous materials onboard, including sulfuric acid, cleaning supplies and pesticides, according to officials, who are now probing how the volatile materials were secured before the truck burst into flames.

State environmental officials also returned to the scene in Andover yesterday to look for any “possible environmental impacts” after the fire burned through the truck’s trailer, completely shutting the highway for seven hours during the evening commute.

“It was a cornucopia of different types of hazardous materials,” said Andover fire chief Michael Mansfield, adding that the 50-gallon drums included paint, thinners, and pesticides. A state police spokesman said sulfuric acid and other cleaning supplies were also on the truck.

“Anything from any hazard group you can imagine was onboard, with the exception of radioactive materials,” Mansfield said. “There obviously was some sort of reaction to create the heat within the trailer itself.”

State police are still investigating what specifically started the fire, and how the chemicals “were stored and secured,” spokesman David Procopio said. No one was injured.

The driver was not cited, and Procopio said state police performed a “visual inspection” of the truck and the driver’s records, finding no immediate “violations of federal motor carrier law.”

State officials did not immediately release a copy of the truck’s manifest yesterday.

The Savannah Fire Department, Savannah Chatham Metro Police and emergency medical personnel responded to a sulfuric acid spill on West Bay Street Sunday afternoon.

Kitchen said firefighters loosened the lid on the tank to reduce the pressure inside to mitigate the situation, but some of the acid had already spilled onto the ground.

"We were able to contain that also," Kitchen said. "It was a little spill. It wasn't much. Even the area that we had pads on was probably a circumference of maybe 10 feet."

Kitchen said he isn't sure how much acid leaked out of the truck, but said the truck's tank can hold 4,000 pounds of liquid.

County and state officials responded to a sulfuric acid spill at the Boise Paper mill in International Falls last week.

The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency reported Tuesday that it was notified last week that about 2,000 to 3,000 gallons of sulfuric acid had spilled onto the production floor. The liquid flowed from a floor drain into the plant's wastewater treatment facility, the MPCA reported; plant employees worked to neutralize the acid by adding an alkalizing agent, and eventually shut down the wastewater treatment facility.

The plant is located along the Rainy River, and staff from the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources and the Koochiching County Soil and Water Conservation District patrolled about 30 miles of the river downstream from International Falls on Friday and Saturday to look for evidence of a fish kill. They did not find any dead fish.

“It’s important to note that a fish kill would be a primary indicator of too much acid in a water body because acid affects the available oxygen, and when that decreases to a certain level, fish die,” MPCA spokeswoman Anne Moore said.

DEFERIET — The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency said hazardous substances appear to have leaked from containers at the site of the former St. Regis paper mill.
However, Joel M. Petty, on-scene coordinator for the EPA, said there was no risk to the public from the materials found in a garage at the secured site at 400 Anderson Ave. or to those working at a nearby hydroelectric power plant.
Mr. Petty said the material was either “containerized, or onto the floor of the garage.”
EPA officials said they discovered the spilled material in June as they searched the site for asbestos-containing material, work that has been ongoing since last year. The mill site has been out of use since the mid-1980s and was described by the agency as being in a “severe state of disrepair.”
In searching more than 100 containers, ranging from 30-gallon containers to a pair of 4,500-gallon tanks, the EPA said “several of these containers have holes, are bulging and leaking contents onto the ground.”
A sample of the containers determined they contained substances like sodium hydroxide and sulfuric acid, Mr. Petty said.

A sulfuric acid spill Sunday afternoon at the Nippon-Dynawave plant (formerly Weyerhaeuser Co.) was contained, according to the company and Cowlitz County Department of Emergency Management.

Emergency Management Director Ernie Schnabler said about 4,000 to 5,000 gallons of sulfuric acid were spilled, and N-D officials called 911, who then contacted Longview Fire Department and Cowlitz 2 Fire and Rescue.

Neither fire department was needed for emergency cleanup.

The spill was securely managed by a constructed containment moat around the sulfuric acid container, according to Brian Wood, N-D's director of support services.
