A Ph.D candidate at UNH who is facing criminal charges after an apparent hazmat situation near campus over the weekend was trying to follow a YouTube video that specifically warned viewers not to repeat the experiment, according to Durham police.

Police said the suspect, Emad Mustafa, 29, called authorities himself on Saturday, saying he may have been exposed to a toxic chemical.

According to new court documents, Mustafa told officers he believed he had made a chemical called dimethyl mercury inside his Oyster River home.

He told officers that mixing the chemical caused a flash-burn, creating smoke and toxic vapor.

He was taken to the hospital and treated, but that process launched a multi-department investigation.

Mustafa admitted that another tenant may have also been exposed to the chemicals.

Town officials in Durham said Mustafa identified the chemicals as mercury, sodium and dimethyl sulfate.

A full evacuation of a commercial building was ordered following the chemical spill, a hazmat team told News Center 7 crews who responded to the scene.

One employee was reportedly “exposed” to the chemical, prompting medical units to respond.

An employee was transported to an area hospital, while another refused transport after being treated at the scene, Assistant Chief Eric Barhorst of Sidney Fire said.

Although the call came in as an industrial spill of hydrochloric acid, a preliminary investigation found that the chemical was a sodium metabisulfite solution, Barhorst continued.

Emergency responders were able to confirm that the product did not leak; however, there was an “active chemical reaction in the container,” Barhorst said. Firefighters and employees mitigated the situation with neutralizing material made to control the chemical.

Emergency responders were able to clear the chemical spill within about two hours.

Emergency crews are still on the scene of a crash Friday morning that involved a tractor-trailer carrying a highly flammable and volatile chemical solution.

Ardmore Volunteer Fire Department said as of 4 p.m., they were ready to begin trying to move the truck, but in order to do so safely, they need to divert traffic in all lanes of Interstate 65 away from the area near the Alabama-Tennessee state line.

Northbound motorists will be directed to Exit 361 (Elkmont), where they can turn right on Thach Road, then left at Alabama 251 and left again at Main Street in Ardmore. Staying on Main Street will bring motorists back to I-65 at Exit 1 in Tennessee.

Southbound motorists will be directed to Exit 1 (Ardmore) in Tennessee, where they can turn left onto Main Street, then right at Jones Avenue and again at Alabama 53 to rejoin I-65 at Exit 365 in Alabama.

A representative with the Ardmore VFD said the tractor-trailer was carrying sodium methylate solutions in alcohol. The NOAA Office of Response and Restoration and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Office of Emergency Management describe the chemical as highly flammable and water-reactive, with the capability to "form explosive mixtures with air."

The U.S. Department of Energy this week said that the Integrated Waste Treatment Unit at the department’s 890-square-mile (2,300-square-kilometer) site that includes the Idaho National Laboratory recently treated more than 100,000 gallons (380,000 liters) of simulant over seven weeks.
“The plant has operated extremely well during this several-week run,” Bill Kirby of the Idaho Environmental Coalition, an Energy Department contractor, said in a statement. “Our staff has done an outstanding job managing all facets of the facility."
The department plans additional testing and then a shutdown to make sure the plant is ready for radioactive waste. The department said increasing amounts of radioactive waste will be mixed with simulant when the plant is fully operational. The department didn’t give a timeline

Alkali metals, such as lithium, sodium, potassium, etc., are highly reactive elements. While researchers generally handle these metals with caution, less caution is taken when these elements have been “reacted”. Here, a recent incident is examined in which a pair of researchers ignited a lithium silicide alloy sample that was assumed to be fully hydrated to lithium hydroxide and, thereby, no longer water-reactive. However, variations in the original chemical composition of the lithium compounds examined resulted in select mixtures failing to hydrate and react completely to lithium hydroxide in the time frame allowed. This gave rise to residual unreacted, water-sensitive lithium silicide which resulted in a violent exothermic reaction with water and autoignition of the produced hydrogen gas. This Article describes this incident and improvements that can be implemented to prevent similar incidents from occurring.

The two fire departments were dispatched to the high school at 24 Main St. in West Newbury after a water vapor cloud caused by the experiment was sucked out the window of one classroom and into a nearby one. The building was evacuated and firefighters worked with a hazmat team member from the Amesbury Fire Department and determined there was no danger because the cloud consisted only of water vapor. Fire crews cleared the area by 9:44 a.m. and Atlantic Ambulance personnel evaluated students and staff in the two classrooms as a precautionary measure. Officials said the botched experiment involved sodium and water and is a standard part of the school’s science curriculum.

Birmingham City Council has vowed to recoup the costs but for now has been left saddled with two tonnes of the material, which they say is the greatest amount of it in its metallic form in all of Western Europe.

The incident ground the area surrounding the junction of Windermere Road and Oxhill Road to a halt on Thursday, November 14, as dozens of firefighters descended on a garage blaze.

Firefighters and other emergency response crews arrived at the North River Collaborative School in Rockland on Tuesday after a science teacher found a likely decades-old jar of potentially explosive sodium in a filing cabinet, officials said.

Firefighters arrived at the school around 8 a.m. after receiving a call from a science teacher who was getting his classroom ready for the start of the school year. While prepping the room, the teacher found a cardboard box containing a mason jar full of about two pounds of sodium, Rockland Fire Chief Scott Duffey said.

The teacher had no intention of using the sodium, and wasn’t sure of how to properly dispose of it, so he called the fire department. Firefighters “found some conditions that concerned [them],” Duffey said, so they called on the state’s hazmat team to help. The hazmat team arrived with members of the State Police bomb squad, who are cross-trained on dealing with hazardous explosive materials, Duffey said.

Sodium, the element that when combined with chlorine makes table salt, is highly explosive on its own. One of the six alkali metals on the periodic table, it can explode when it comes in contact with water or air, which is why it is usually stored in oil. In this case, the sodium was in a mason jar, which is “not an appropriate container,” Duffey said.

Rockland Fire says a teacher at the North River Collaborative School found the jar Tuesday afternoon while cleaning a cabinet in a science classroom.Upon arrival, firefighters located a cardboard box inside of a filing cabinet. Inside the box were multiple containers and jars containing a variety of leftover chemicals and substances from old science experiments.

Based on the appearance box and jars, it is believed that the sodium was there for years, if not decades.

After it was determined that the two-pound jar of sodium was determined to be a potential safety hazard and a regional hazmat team was requested to investigate. The sodium was taken to the Rockland Recycling Center, where it was deemed safe, according to Rockland Fire.

There were no leaks or spills from the box or jar. Other chemicals in the box were found and will be disposed of out of caution.

On Saturday Fire and Emergency New Zealand (FENZ) sent crews from Oamaru, Weston and Timaru to contain a dangerous gas which was released when two containers of chemicals came into contact at the meatworks, formerly called Lean Meats Oamaru Ltd.

The spokesman said there was a chemical reaction that led to a release of a dangerous gas.

Oamaru Volunteer Fire Brigade Chief Fire Officer Steve Couper said a man was injured.

"I don’t believe it was serious.

"He was hurt when the drum exploded. It exploded with all the chemicals away from him. It blew the lid off the drum. When the lid came back that’s what hit his hand. I don’t believe anything was broken."

Mr Couper believed the man was taken to Oamaru Hospital before FENZ teams arrived.

The two chemicals involved, Mr Couper believed, were citric acid and sodium chlorite.

"When it reacts it gives off heat, but also chlorine dioxide gas — a real nasty. I know when we started diluting it down, the gas cloud was a green-yellowy colour. It’s pretty dangerous stuff."

A local man who died last year left behind vast stores of dangerous chemicals in Pierce County that hazardous materials crews are working to get rid of, according to the federal Environmental Protection Agency.

“There was really (potential) danger — fire, explosion, exposure, health hazards,” local EPA spokeswoman Suzanne Skadowski said this week. “We’re really glad we found out about them when we did, so that we could take care of them.”

The first cleanup started Jan. 19 when a University Place man called police about chemicals stored in his home on 44th Street West. He said he’d kept them for the late owner of the substances.

“He might have just taken a closer look at them and been worried,” Skadowski said. “He definitely did the right thing.”

More than 240 containers of unsafely stored chemicals — including sodium metal and hydrofluoric acid — were removed from the home.

When sodium metal mixes with water, it produces spontaneously flammable gas that can seriously damage skin and eyes, according to the EPA.

Hydrofluoric acid is corrosive, toxic, and can seriously damage lungs when inhaled.

Authorities also found chemicals at a Tacoma property on McMurray Road Northeast that the late owner of the substances rented.

The hundreds of different chemicals, some of which had spilled, spanned four derelict buildings and thousands of containers, and likely will take crews the rest of the week to finish cleaning up.

“There’s just so many,” Skadowski said.

She said it’s not clear what the late owner used the chemicals for, but that the man’s obituary stated he had an interest in chemistry and fireworks.

A fire at a low-level radioactive waste dump in Nye County that shut down a 140-mile stretch of Nevada's main north-south highway for almost 24 hours in October was caused by rainfall that seeped through a compromised cover and reacted with metallic sodium, according to a report released Thursday.

On Oct. 18, during heavy rainfall, the now-closed, state-owned landfill at the US Ecology dump near Beatty roared to life with explosions and fire. Beatty is about 115 miles northwest of Las Vegas, off of U.S. Highway 95.

A state probe of the incident was launched to consider if the fire was related to the wet weather, and if disposal records kept by the state in Carson City and at the site list any materials that could have reacted with water to cause the fire. Monday's report details how corrosion of the steel drums containing the metallic sodium allowed the packing fluid to seep out, leaving the metallic sodium exposed to underground elements.

The 305-page report released Thursday collects statements from staffers who were there, aerial maps, results of laboratory analyses and a 195-page study on low-level radioactive waste management from 1981 as an attachment.

But company officials say operational improvements have been made and the facility will host an open house event on March 18 with hopes to reopen soon.

On Nov. 18, a vacuum truck sucking up non-hazardous waste at Southern California Wastewater — formerly known as Santa Clara Wastewater — inadvertently sucked up a chemical known as sodium chlorite, causing a 1,000-gallon chemical spill and hazardous explosion that injured five people. Since then, the Santa Paula facility has been shut out of public pipelines by the city of Oxnard.

“There were high levels of radioactive elements so Oxnard shut the facility out of its pipelines,” said Ventura County Supervisor Kathy Long, who represents the area where SCWW is located. “So they can’t operate until that’s resolved.”

She said the company must receive clearance from the city of Oxnard, as well as clean up the explosion site, before it can start using the pipelines again. SCWW cleaned up the explosion site and disposed of waste from the incident in January, according to company officials.

And the company disputes the findings that led to it being shut out of the pipelines, as its environmental engineering consultant, Santa Barbara-based Haley Aldrich, has reviewed and substantiated company research that indicates initial testing failed to account for naturally occurring potassium levels. By not accounting for the potassium, some radioactive elements appeared to be out of balance when they actually weren’t, the company said.

Although this piece of pyrotechnics has amazed generations of chemistry students, until now it has been misunderstood, a paper in Nature Chemistry reveals1.

The explosion, say Pavel Jungwirth and his collaborators at the Czech Academy of Sciences in Prague, is not merely a consequence of the ignition of the hydrogen gas that the alkali metals release from water. That may happen eventually, but it begins as something far stranger: a rapid exodus of electrons followed by explosion of the metal driven by electrical repulsion.

Police sent a hazardous materials team to a home along East Fitzsimons Way near Interstate 225 to retrieve about 500 grams of a substance they said the unidentified woman claimed was pure sodium. In its purest form, sodium is a metal that can produce hydrogen gas and heat if in contact with water.

Police said the woman claimed the ex-boyfriend obtained the substance from a hospital where he worked.

In sufficient quantities, pure sodium can cause a fire.

Police believe the chemical was targeted because the thieves were under the false impression it could be used to manufacture methamphetamine.

Police are ''highly concerned'' as the chemical, sodium selenate, can be lethal if handled incorrectly.

Anyone who came in contact with the chemical could find themselves in grave danger and police were advising anyone who may come across it to stay away and call them immediately on 111.

Sodium selenate has the appearance of white powder the consistency of fine sugar.

The stolen chemical was secured in a blue metal drum and was clearly marked.

Researchers found tiny amounts of DOSS, an abbreviation of the chemical compound dioctyl sodium sulfosuccinate, in both the oil patties and deepwater sediment.

The research conducted by scientists with Haverford College in Pennsylvania and the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in Massachusetts raises new questions about the assumptions on how quickly two COREXIT brand dispersants disappeared after being used to break up oil into tiny droplets, said lead author Helen Kirsty White, an assistant professor of chemistry at Haverford.

The 60,000-liter outdoor storage tank containing some 20,000 liters of sodium aluminate exploded at around 11:55 a.m. at the chemical factory in Hwaseong, 60 kilometers south of Seoul, they added.

Police said they suspect the explosion occurred when the three workers were doing welding work to install a handrail next to the tank.

The explosion might have occurred when the sodium aluminate, which is used for many industrial and technical applications, came into contact with the heat source, police officers said.

In his delightful memoir “Uncle Tungsten”, the eminent neurologist and writer Oliver Sacks recounts the swashbuckling chemical adventures of his teenage years, sparked when a sympathetic uncle got him hooked on to the wonders of chemistry. For me the most memorable image from that book is one of the young Sacks standing on a bridge on a river and successively dropping a few grams of the alkali metals – from lithium to cesium – in the water to observe their reaction. Lithium causes little reaction, sodium dances on the surface with a flame while cesium roars like a beast with much sound and fury. Sacks says that after that incident he never forgot the trends in reactivity of the alkali metals, an important principle that’s often taught in high school and college. Many prominent scientists, some of whom later won Nobel Prizes, remember similar exciting adventures with chemistry sets as teenagers.

It’s a sad commentary on our alarmist society that a similar deed would probably land a modern day budding Oliver Sacks into jail. And that is exactly what it has done to a young aspiring scientist from Bartow High School in Florida, and in the process it has almost certainly deprived this country of exactly the kind of scientist whose shortage its politicians and educators are so fond of lamenting. The student conducted a common experiment mixing Drano and aluminum foil on the grounds of a school. The exact details are unknown but the incident led to a minor explosion, hurt nobody and damaged no property. This relatively harmless bit of curiosity led to the student being handcuffed, arrested and expelled from the school. Irrational State Overreach: 1, The Much Touted American Edge in Science: 0. Whatever else the school was trying to achieve, it definitely succeeded in squelching independent scientific curiosity in its students.

Students were to bring to class an item representing an element of the periodic table. Some brought aluminum foil, salt and water.

But some brought sodium, lithium and even mercury.

As a precaution, a teacher called the principal, who called authorities.

Within minutes, fully equipped hazmat investigators and firefighters bore down on the building. School officials rummaged through the bookbags and lockers of the 125 students assigned the project.

Some 2,200 students were locked down in first-period classes.

"It's almost stupid," said sophomore Kyle Salvaggio.

In the end, about 10 projects — "anything that could potentially be dangerous" — were taken from students, said Pinellas Schools spokeswoman Melanie Marquez.

The mercury came in thermometers, Marquez said, but it was unclear what the lithium and sodium were brought in.

She said calling authorities was a cautious reaction.

The incident will be reviewed by school principal Walter Weller, who did not return a call for comment.

Emergency services were called to their second potentially hazardous situation in as many days yesterday afternoon when smoke was spotted coming from the Kaikoura High School science laboratory.

Kaikoura fire chief Ian Walker said the callout happened just after 3pm, and it was fortunate students were just leaving for the day.

Potassium that had not been stored properly had come in contact with either air or water, causing an explosion in a chemical cupboard.

Once the brigade had established the likely cause of the explosion, two firefighters wearing chemical suits and breathing apparatus were sent into the building to open the cabinet. Quantities of calcium, lithium, sodium and potassium were removed from the building and made safe outside by submerging them in oil, Mr Walker said.

The potassium, which reacts violently with water and air, was fortunately contained when the heat of the explosion had caused the container lid to weld shut.

School head of science Jo Fissenden said the potassium, which was like a bomb, had been used earlier in the day.

It appeared that it had not been correctly stored again after it had been used.

"Potassium needs to be stored under oil," she said. "Either there was not enough oil or some air or water had got to it somehow."

Fire officials say a chemical explosion occurred causing Students and faculty in Building 3 to evacuate. The building will remain closed until the residue in the classroom is cleaned.

"The alert system worked. We got to everybody. We were able to quickly assess what was happening here. Knock on wood, we're happy it wasn't much worse," said Erie Community College President Jack Quinn.

News 4 was told a professor was conducting a demonstration when something went wrong. Newton Abbott Fire Dept. Deputy Chief explained, "When the sodium hit the ice there's a reaction when it hits ice water or it's cleaned up with water. And what happened is the ice particles exploded."

There were no injuries; one person was treated for what appeared to be anxiety. A few students were evaluated to make sure there were no chemical burns or inhalation burns but officials found none.

Pond Road was completely blocked by emergency response vehicles as firefighters in Hazmat suits tried to assess the damage of the fire, which occurred at approximately 10 a.m. at 26 Pond Road.
According to fire officials, there were no injuries as a result of the chemical reaction.
Two chemicals, calcium peroxide and sodium persulfate, reacted with a currently unknown foreign chemical that had leaked into the oil tank to cause the fire, officials said.
Residents were asked to stay in their homes, although Wilton Fire Chief Paul Milositz stressed that they were in no immediate danger.
The fire crews will remain on the scene for some time to test the pH of the soil and liquid in the affected area, fire officials said, and then they will need to contain the foreign chemical and transport it to a safe location.

Officials: Broken Sodium Fixture Released Gas

PHILADELPHIA - Father Judge High School became off-limits and two local emergency rooms were temporarily quarantined, according to fire department sources, after a hazardous materials incident was traced back to the school.

At least five to 10 victims, several of them cheerleaders, have been complaining of eye irritation and visited two or three emergency rooms, FOX 29's Sean Tobin reported.

We're told parents are also among the patients who are being treated with the cheerleaders after they visited the all-boy school Sunday to participate in a competition being held there.

For some of the patients the problem was so bad that they were taken to the hospital to have their eyes flushed, Tobin reported.

Victims went to as many as three hospitals in Northeast Philadelphia, and officials soon figured out that the common bond was they had all been at Father Judge.

Hazardous materials crews responded to the school, located on Solly Road in Northeast Philadelphia, before dawn to investigate.

Shortly after 7 a.m., fire officials said says a sodium light fixture broke in the auditorium, releasing a gas that caused the irritation.

The cases led to the quarantining of those two hospital emergency rooms, and the Department of Homeland Security was even notified, Tobin reported.

Separate incidents at Idaho nuke facility wake-up calls for downwind Wyoming

Jackson Hole, Wyo.-It was a rough week at Idaho National Laboratory (INL) last week. The 890-square-mile nuclear energy facility located between Arco, and Idaho Falls, Idaho, experienced two unrelated emergencies three days apart.

On November 8, 16 employees at the Zero Power Physics Reactor (ZPPR), a fast reactor core decommissioned in 1992, were exposed to radioactive material when a shipping container of nuclear fuel accidentally opened. Seven of those employees showed external skin contamination and were immediately decontaminated; six of them had positive nasal swipes. A lung scan performed on at least two employees showed traces of Americium-241, an isotope that indicates the employees may have inhaled plutonium.

Four of the 16 workers received treatment for internal radiation exposure. INL officials said ongoing tests and monitoring of exposed workers will likely continue for several weeks. Officials at the lab also said all radioactive material was contained within the facility and there was never any threat to the public.

On November 11, emergency personnel were again scrambled at the lab when a fire was reported some time before 10 a.m. on Friday. INL spokesman Erik Simpson reported that 11 Idaho Cleanup Project (ICP) employees were evacuated for medical attention. One worker was transported to the Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center for burns.

Crews were able to reenter the building at 2 p.m. that day and confirmed the fire was caused by a sodium reaction. Sodium was used as a coolant for the Experimental Breeder Reactor-II until the early 1990s. When the reactor was shut down, the sodium coolant was drained; however, ICP employees are currently tasked with removing residual sodium from the Sodium Boiler Building before demolishing the facility.

(Reuters) - A sodium fire erupted on Friday at a U.S. Nuclear laboratory in Idaho, burning one worker, but the incident posed no risk to the public, the lab said.

The incident was the second this week at the sprawling facility. Earlier this week, at least six workers were contaminated by low-level plutonium radiation and 11 others were exposed following a mishap at the lab.

The chemical fire on Friday broke out in a building adjacent to a decommissioned, experimental reactor at the U.S. Department of Energy's sprawling Idaho National Laboratory that is cooled by sodium, lab spokeswoman Sara Prentice said.

The fire may have been caused by a sodium reaction, Prentice said.
