The Baylor Scott & White Emergency Center on U.S. Highway 80 in Forney was evacuated after a hazmat situation developed around noon on Tuesday.

The situation stemmed from a supposed gas leak in the surrounding area that was later confirmed to be “sewer gas” by Forney public information officer Kyle Rouvaldt.

Hospital officials evacuated the freestanding emergency room as a precautionary measure, Baylor Scott & White spokeswoman Julie Smith said, “moving staff and one patient to a nearby Baylor Scott & White facility.”

Dallas Fire-Rescue’s hazmat crew, the Forney Fire Department, CareFlite, and the Kaufman County Office of Emergency Management all were on-scene during the situation, and representatives of Atmos Energy responded to the initial concerns about the gas leak.

Baylor Scott & White Emergency Center-Forney—a department of Baylor Scott & White Medical Center-Lake Pointe—has yet to reopen, allowing time for the facility to air out.

SAUGET • A sewer gas explosion early this morning in Sauget sent several manhole covers flying, at least one of which damaged a power line and cut off electricity to a factory.

Sauget Police Chief Patrick Delaney said the village's sewer system lost power at around 5:15 a.m.

“During efforts to repair it, an electric line arced and that triggered a fire in the sewer system that eventually caused the explosion at around 7:50 a.m.,” Delaney said.

The electric lines damaged were in the 500 block of Monsanto Avenue, near the Afton Chemical plant. That road has been closed for hours but is expected to reopen by 2 p.m., Delaney said.

In turn, the power line damage knocked out electricity to the Eastman Chemical Co. plant.

A chemical odor at the old National Home’s office building in the 400 block of South Earl Street sent about two dozen employees into the morning cold Friday.

It turned out to be sewer gases emitting from a dry floor drain in the second-floor restroom, Battalion Chief Rick DeHahn said.

“We evacuated the building as a precautionary measure. Now we’re just … trying to figure out what caused it,” Lafayette Deputy Fire Chief Steve Butram said.

After huddling in the parking lot or sitting in their cars for about 45 minutes, the employees of the businesses were told to go get a warm breakfast, and most of them headed out. A few minutes later, about 9:05 a.m., scene commander Rick DeHahn, gave the all-clear to allow employees back inside.

Flagler Hospital security guards called St. Johns County Fire Rescue to report noxious fumes Sunday afternoon, prompting the Fire Rescue Hazmat team to respond to the hospital’s oncology wing just before noon.

Fire Rescue spokesman Andrew O’Quinn said the fumes were determined by the Hazmat team to be sewer gas from backed-up vent pipes in Flagler’s oncology wing.

O’Quinn said the team checked the building for gases and radiation levels above those in a normal oncology setting but deemed the area safe.

The wing remained operational as Hazmat ventilated the space in about 45 minutes. O’Quinn said the hospital had a past problem with the presence of sewer gas and that it is not uncommon for the piping in that area.

On Palm Sunday, April 17, 2011, a St. Petersburg, Florida church was evacuated after people became sick during service. Approximately 2,000 people were evacuated from the St. John Vianney Catholic Church located in St. Pete Beach at approximately 10:30 am. Eight people were transferred from the service to a local hospital where they were treated for symptoms such as fatigue, nausea and dizziness.

Hazmat crews arrived on the scene to investigate the cause of the mysterious illness. By late afternoon, it was suspected that a sewer line had backed up causing low levels of methane gas to permeate through the building, though tests are still inconclusive.

The church service, led by Father John Blum, was continued in the church’s Parish Hall. By Sunday evening, all had been released from the hospital. No serious injuries were reported and testing is still underway to determine the exact cause of the illness.

Homeowners waited for hours after neighbors reported they smelled gas in the area, but were allowed back in their homes around 9:45 p.m. when crews deemed the situation safe.
Firefighters used gas detection meters to track down where they thought the leak started.
"It's in the sewer system. Once it's in the sewage system it will get in everyone's house, and if your traps aren't filled with water, that odor is going to come up through your traps and fill your house up," said Mike Remper, assistant fire chief.
Allegheny County Hazmat crews were called to the scene to shut off valves to stop any potential leak.

A tube station was evacuated yesterday afternoon after it was feared people could be exposed to harmful gases.

Tooting Broadway station was closed at about 1pm yesterday after staff smelt gas in the station concourse.

London Fire Brigade launched a major operation to deal with the incident, with 14 specialist units dispatched to the scene, including officers in chemical suits.

Firefighters were relieved to find the smell of gas was from underground sewers, after a manhole cover inside the station had become dislodged.

A firefighter that attended the incident said the station was closed for about an hour-and-a-half and major disruption was caused to traffic in the area.

Pavements around the station and some lanes of traffic were closed to give London Fire Brigade access to the scene.

The firefighter said: "Thankfully there was no risk to the public, just a bad smell."

He added: "But in these situation we cannot take any chances which is why we took the action we did."
