(WBAY) - The Appleton Fire Department’s Hazardous Material Team was called out to help remove pool chemicals from a storage area at 218 East Lawrence Street in Appleton on Sunday, March 5. The address matches the location of the local YMCA.

According to the Appleton Fire Department, several people at the property had encountered breathing problems due to the chemicals mixing, which resulted in the release of chlorine gas.

After the hazardous material team had arrived, the building was evacuated. The chemicals were removed and placed in the care of disposal contractor.

Fire crews from all over the Alle-Kiski Valley and beyond battled a four-alarm fire Tuesday at a swimming pool supply store in Harrison that forced the evacuation of some elderly people within a half-mile radius of the scene.

Harrison Hills Fire Chief James Bartolovich said there were concerns about chemical exposure coming from Country Pools & Spas, particularly chlorine fumes and forms of acid. Clouds of smoke covered large swaths of the sky.

There was someone working at the business at the time of the fire, Bartolovich said. That person escaped without injury.

Police at the scene said several firefighters were taken to a hospital after breathing in the chemicals as they fought the fire. Bartolovich was able to confirm at least one firefighter was transported from the scene due to inhalation issues.

WEST BARNSTABLE — YMCA Cape Cod has reopened its aquatic center, several weeks after chemical exposure injured seven children in October.

On Wednesday the pool reopened to all aquatics programming, including swim lessons, aqua fitness, and lap swimming. And all seven children injured in the chemical exposure, returned to YMCA classes and activities, said Stacie Peugh, chief executive officer of YMCA Cape Cod.

"We were collectively devastated by this accident at our pool. The impact on all board and staff was, and is very significant," said Peugh in an email. "Our first priority is the health and safety of the children in our care. We at the Y wish to convey our most heartfelt concern for all impacted by this incident."

On Oct. 7, the YMCA added granular chlorine, and later muriatic acid into the pool’s filtration system, rather than directly into the pool. The pool was not closed, and the granular chlorine was not diluted before being added to the filtration system.

STAUNTON — The Howard Johnson Inn on North Central Avenue in downtown Staunton was evacuated late Monday night following a malfunction that caused a chemical mixup, according to Deputy Chief Perry Weller of Staunton Fire & Rescue.

Two people were taken from the scene by the Staunton-Augusta Rescue Squad to the hospital for evaluation.

Weller said a pump inside a laundry room malfunctioned at the hotel, causing sodium hypochlorite (bleach) to mix with another chemical, which he said created a type of chlorine gas.

Fire crews neutralized the mixture and ventilated the entire building before clearing the scene, Weller said.

An independent investigation found that the YMCA Cape Cod did not follow industry standards when treating its pool earlier this month before children swimming in the pool became ill.

A combination of chemicals became toxic and sent seven children to the hospital during the Oct. 7 incident in West Barnstable, according to a statement posted on the YMCA's website.

“It has just been awful, we have been devastated by this whole accident that occurred, it’s the last thing that we want to happen when running YMCA programs,” the YMCA's CEO, Stacey Peugh, said in a phone interview with the Times.

The children have since returned to an after-school program at the YMCA, although their health status was not disclosed by the YMCA out of respect for their families.

The YMCA Cape Cod dosed its pool manually on Oct. 7 because its automated chemical feeder system had failed.

Around 1:20 p.m., fire crews were dispatched to Countryside Village Apartments on 836 Security Drive for a report of pool chemicals mixing to make a dangerous gas.

Upon arriving, crews were directed to the pool's mechanical room where they found a small amount of sulfuric acid and chlorine liquid mixed on the floor.

A contractor who was on site was working in the pool area when the chemical liquid pumps inadvertently began operating, causing the chemicals to be released from the plumbing system onto the floor.

The complex workers in the office building adjacent to the pool and its mechanical room noticed the smell of chlorine gas.

Ottawa paramedics say three people were taken to the hospital with mild to moderate symptoms following exposure to pool chemicals at a hotel in Ottawa's east end.
The Ottawa Fire Service hazardous materials team was called to the hotel on Brisebois Crescent near Centrum Boulevard at 8:48 a.m. Saturday after vapours from chemicals that were being mixed in a mechanical room made it to the pool area, affecting several people.
A dispatcher told the 9-1-1 caller to pull the fire alarm in order to get everyone outside. An OC Transpo bus was provided as shelter.
OFS said two chemicals, about four litres chlorine and a half-barrel of muriatic acid, were accidentally mixed together. The hazmat team found dangerous levels of chlorine gas in the pool area.
Chlorine is typically used as a pool sanitizer. Muriatic acid is a potent cleaning agent and is also used to lower pH levels and alkalinity in swimming pools. Toxic chlorine gas can be released if they're mixed improperly.

No one was injured during a hazardous materials situation Saturday evening at an aquatic center in west suburban Aurora.

Fire crews responded at 6:17 p.m. to the Phillips Park Family Aquatic Center, 828 Montgomery Rd. in Aurora, after an employee reported an unknown substance leaking from a small building next to the facility, according to a statement from the Aurora fire department. The situation was then upgraded to a Level II HazMat response and the Aurora Fire Department Hazardous Material Team responded to the scene.

It was determined that the leaking substance was hydrochloric acid, a chemical used to raise the pH of water in swimming pools, fire officials said. It was estimated that between 5 and 10 gallons of the chemical leaked from a 30-gallon poly tank.

The leak was caused by a 500-gallon poly tank that started to backfill after being refilled on Friday, fire officials said. It is not clear why the 500-gallon poly tank started to backfill with water from a pool water line, pushing the product into the 30 gallon poly tank and causing the spillage.

The HazMat team used sodium bicarbonate to neutralize the hydrochloric acid, making it safe for cleanup, fire officials said.

"I was actually looking at pools last weekend, but I was like I guess you'd have to be in a complex," Lashelle Holt told WCNC Charlotte.
Holt doesn’t have a personal pool, so she and her daughter are headed to a local splash pad.
This may be for the best because some pool owners are still having trouble securing chlorine tablets.

CHESTERFIELD, (WRIC) — An investigation by the Chesterfield Fire Marshal’s office has revealed that a hazmat incident earlier this week that sent 11 people to the hospital was caused by a pump malfunction in the neighborhood pool.

Fire officials told 8News that parents became concerned after children became nauseous and began having respiratory issues.

Now, fire officials say “preliminary information” indicates that pool staff were not responsible for the incident – instead pointing to a malfunctioning chemical pump that flooded the pool system with too much pool chemical.

One mother – who asked to remain anonymous – was at the pool with her five children, who ranged in age from eight years to four months. She said they inhaled a “powdery substance” and began choking, after which she drove them to Chippenham Hospital for treatment.

Hours later, she could still be heard coughing on the phone.

A spill of chemicals at Sheboygan’s Blue Harbor Resort on Monday sent fire, medical and HazMat rushing to the scene after an employee was overcome by fumes.

Sheboygan Fire Department BattalionChief Pat Nicolaus said they received the call of a possible hazardous material leak in the pool filtration room area at 12:24 Monday afternoon. The first units arriving on the scene were told by the employee that he’d opened the door to the filtration room and was overcome with fumes. He immediately closed the door and called the fire department. Firefighters then evacuated the immediate area of the filtration room pending the arrival of the HazMat team.

Those responders entered the filtration room in fully encapsulated suits and found two hoses that were disconnected from the filtration system. The hoses had spilled a minimal amount of chemicals onto the floor which then mixed, reacting together to cause the noxious oder and fumes.

After the HazMat team turned off the pumps and valves controlling the part of the filtration system involved in the spill, fire department crews washed down the area and diluted the chemicals to make the area safe. There were no further problems or injuries resulting from the incident.

MESA, AZ (3TV/CBS 5) - Garbage trucks in Mesa are catching fire, creating dangerous conditions for truck drivers and the community. City officials said there have been six garbage truck fires in the last two months because people are throwing away hazardous materials in the trash.

“We want residents to know that hazardous materials never should go in a trash or container,” said Mariano Reyes with the City of Mesa Environmental Management and Sustainability.

Items like batteries, aerosol cans, pool chemicals and propane gas tanks should be dropped off at the Mesa Hazardous Materials Facility. Reyes said even if they are empty, those items can catch fire or explode. “They can still contain enough liquid material in them that when they are compacted in our garbage trucks, it can actually cause an explosion,” said Reyes.

The facility even has a “swap shop” where people can drop off used hazardous items like paint, cleaning products and other chemicals that Mesa residents can pick up for free. The facility is open Wednesday through Saturday from 7 a.m. to noon. For a full list of items it accepts, click here.

Emergency personnel from Monroe and Northampton Counties were called to the scene just before 10 a.m.
Stroud Township Fire Chief Bill Unruh said his firefighters were exposed to what he believes were swimming pool-related chemicals when they showed up to rescue the male driver.
He was rushed to the hospital.
"We had multiple patients, firefighters having to be deconned and cleared and sent to the hospital to be monitored for their conditions. So there was a little bit of an inhalation hazard. Most of the guys have been treated and released as far as I'm aware," said Chief Unruh.

The managing director of the China Fleet Country Club in Saltash has confirmed it was the scene of a 'haz-mat incident' last night. The incident in question was attended to by fire crews from across Cornwall.

Cornwall Fire and Rescue initially confirmed an accidental mix of chemicals in a swimming pool had caused the issue. At the time it had stated it was an unnamed "Saltash leisure centre".

PlymouthLive can now confirm that was China Fleet Country Club. Fire crews from Saltash, Camels Head in Plymouth, Bodmin, St Austell and Launceston all responded to the incident at 9.25pm.

Managing director Dean Bennett said: "Last night a small amount of pool chemicals were inadvertently mixed together in our pool plant room, in rare circumstances this can create chlorine gas. Due to the small quantities mixed we did not experience any issues however as a precaution the fire service were called and they carried out their normal protocols for dealing with any chemical issue.

A caller reported the fire just after 12:10 a.m. It appeared to have started in the storage shed at the resort on Avila Beach Drive.

Firefighters from Cal Fire responded to the scene and quickly called out San Luis Obispo County’s hazardous incident response team. The team consists of firefighters and officials from around the county who are equipped to handle potentially dangerous chemical fires.

A fire destroyed a storage shed at Sycamore Mineral Springs Resort & Spa early Thursday morning, causing damage to the pool area and a hazardous chemical leak.

Although the fire was quickly extinguished, common pool cleaning chemicals stored nearby were affected by the heat and leaked onto the asphalt surrounding the shed, according to Peter Hague, a San Luis Obispo County environmental health supervisor.

(WMTV) - The City of Beloit offered new details Thursday regarding the hazardous material spill the previous day that forced the evacuation of the Beloit College Powerhouse. Emergency crews also shut down stretches of Pleasant Street and the riverwalk as part of their cleanup efforts.

According to the new statement a driver delivering pool chemicals to the Powerhouse accidentally switched the muriatic acid and chlorine lines. The new mixture emitted a gas plume that sent several people to the hospital.

On Wednesday, a spokesperson for the city, Sarah Lock, reported three people ended up going to the hospital for treatment and others were treated at the scene. The incident, which was reported around 10 a.m., shut down the street and the riverwalk for more than four hours while crews cleaned up the area.

The patients were transported to a local hospital and a third patient drove to an area hospital for treatment on their own, per Beloit Fire Department Capt. Beloit College Interim Chief Communications Officer Elizabeth Conlisk said the cause of the incident remains under investigation, and added those injured were not Beloit College students.

Rosario confirmed that a vendor contracted by the college to conduct pool maintenance was at the Powerhouse and servicing the pool area when a mixture of pool chemicals created a hazardous gas plume that resulted in the evacuation of the facility.

UMBERTON — No one was injured, but the Lumberton Fire Department is sending off gear to be cleaned after firefighters dealt with a fire that caused a “small-scale” hazardous material release on Saturday, according to interim Fire Chief Chris West.

The fire department was dispatched about 1:03 a.m. Saturday to a fire at 2300 N. Cedar St. in Lumberton, West said. Crews encountered “heavy smoke” caused by the breakdown of residential pool tablets stored at the warehouse in a cardboard box that caught fire.
...
Residents in apartments on Godwin Avenue were located more than 300 feet away, so no evacuations or isolations were necessary, he said. If the event was a larger fire or if the fire had occurred in a more residential area evacuations would have been ordered.

The fire department is sending off eight sets of structural turnout gear to D&S Textiles in Fayetteville to be inspected and cleaned after exposure to the chemicals, West said.

Firefighters wore air packs to protect them from toxic fumes, and the hazmat group also used respirators to protect themselves, he said. Eight air packs will be sent back to the manufacturers or distributors to be inspected.

The building is owned by Hazmat Emergency Response and Remediation, or HERR, which cleared the scene of hazardous materials, West said.

The company will pay for the disposal of the material, which has been neutralized and is not a threat to the environment, according to the interim chief.

No fees or charges resulted from the Saturday fire.

The tablets that caused the fire were left over from other materials once stored in the warehouse, he said. There were about three to four pallets and empty barrels in the location at the time of the fire.

SAN DIEGO — A nationwide chlorine shortage is putting a damper on those pool parties and swim lessons San Diego County residents pined for during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The scarcity of the chemical has closed some public pools and forced others to reduce operations. Most recently, Coronado shuttered its pools until further notice, saying it has received little to no supply to keep both its competition and recreational pools open at the Aquatics Center.

“There is a nationwide chlorine shortage and it’s kind of been ongoing, but it’s really hitting home,” said Roger Miller, director of Coronado’s Recreation and Golf Services.

The city uses about 500 to 600 gallons of chlorine a week to treat an estimated 100,000 gallons of water to keep its pools operational. Last week, Coronado received a shipment of only 300 gallons, Miller said.

Ottawa Fire Services (OFS) says the hazardous materials team was called to a building on Edgeworth Avenue near Carling Avenue at around 3:36 p.m. Wednesday after people reported the gas had irritated their eyes.

Everyone had evacuated the garage where the chemicals had mixed by the time the crew arrived.

"Haz-Mat technicians located a pool chlorine product which had mixed with other chemicals causing the reaction and creating a dangerous gas," OFS said in a release.

Ottawa Paramedics told CTV News Ottawa that a 45-year-old man and a 58-year-old woman were taken to the hospital for treatment. A third person was assessed at the scene but did not go to the hospital.

June 30 , 2021 -- Just ahead of Independence Day, a nationwide chlorine shortage is putting a damper on summer plans for backyard pool owners and community aquatic centers across the country.

A massive fire at a Louisiana chemical plant that produces most of the nation’s chlorine tablets, combined with a new boom in pool construction, could leave many pools high and dry this Fourth of July, industry experts warn.

The shortage is already driving up chlorine prices and leading swimming pools in some regions of the nation to close or scale back operations.

But the chlorine shortage isn’t just hampering summer pool and vacation plans: Experts are worried about public health, too. Chlorine kills bacteria, and pools that aren’t treated correctly can spread life-threatening illnesses from E. coli, salmonella, and other germs.

"I’m calling it a poolapocalypse or poolmageddon,” says Rudy Stankowitz, a residential and public pool consultant. “It’s not going to be easy to make it through this, no matter what we do. The product is scarce. But it’s just like any other shortage.

Some incidents caused by a chlorine product shortage is prompting the Chautauqua County Hazardous Materials Response Team to ask pool owners to be cautious when using a brand other than what they have typically been using.

There are four types of chlorinating products. They may look similar but they are incompatible with each other. These are Liquid Chlorine (bleach), Dichlor (granular sodium dichlor-5-triazinetrione), Calcium Hypochlorite (granular and tablets) and Trichlor (granular and tablets trichlor)-5-triazinetrione.

Mixing different chlorinating compounds can result in a volatile reaction capable of causing bodily harm and producing toxic vapors.

County officials say pool owners should not use the wrong chlorine tablets in their chlorinator. Placing the wrong type of chlorinating tablets or mixing different forms in a tablet feeder will cause a reaction that produces considerable heat and toxic gasses. The rapid formation of gas inside a tablet feeder can cause enough pressure to blow the lid off the feeder or can be violent enough to cause the feeder to explode.

BOISE, Idaho — The Boise Police Department "completed their evaluation and containment" of a chemical spill that injured 28 people with at least 14 of them taken to the hospital near the Fairmont Park pool.
Boise Fire Division Chief Paul Roberts told KTVB the spill occurred in one of the maintenance buildings near the pool. Hazmat crews were dispatched to the area at around 1 p.m. on Friday and are currently on the scene. Roberts suspects the spill occurred about five minutes before crews were sent out.

A Code Red was initiated and crews were on scene for the next several hours until the spill was neutralized. Residents in the area were told to shelter in place, but that order has since been lifted.
Roberts said a commercial truck that was filling chemical tanks for the pool was in the area at the time of the spill. It is currently not known what chemicals were spilled, but Roberts said the five people admitted to the hospital do not have life-threatening injuries.
"A hazmat team is doing their homework and research to establish exactly what these chemicals are and hazards associated with those chemicals," Roberts told KTVB. "Once that’s determined, the hazmat team will donate the appropriate clothing to protect them to go in and further mitigate it, contain it and neutralize it so we can open the area back up."

Pool owners and pool supply stores are feeling the impact of a nationwide chlorine shortage.

WAAY-31 spoke to a non-profit about the impact on their swimming pool operations.

The price of a small tab that helps keep swimming pools clean has gone up more than 25% and that’s putting a pinch on places like Thornton Acres pool.

"Last year, this time, a 5-gallon bucket of 2-inch chlorine tabs would've cost us around $80. This year, our first 5-gallon bucket cost us $150," said Susan McDougal.

Susan McDougal is the treasurer at Thornton Acres pool and she said she can't believe how much the price has gone up for the chlorine.

It’s because of a huge chemical plant fire in Louisiana last year that led to a shortage of chlorine tablets.

Fairgrieve Elementary School and the Fourth Street School went into lockdown this morning, according to the Fulton Police Department.

The first dispatches earlier today reported multiple shots fired with people yelling near Fairgrieve, police said. That drew a large police presence from the Fulton police, State police and Oswego County Sheriff’s Office.

Fulton police said the noises which were reported as gunshots were a chemical reaction of pool chemicals.

Officers on scene reported the chemicals continued to react producing sounds similar to small-caliber gun fire, police said.

Police said a pool chlorinator explosion was reported at a nearby residence, injuring a person working on the pool.

The smell of chlorine could be more elusive than usual this summer.

That's because the swimming pool industry is grappling with a chlorine shortage that has caused prices of the chemical to soar, forcing pool owners to consider alternatives.

"Pool chlorine is not easy to get, and there's a chlorine shortage nationally that we're all going to have to deal with," John Swygert, CEO of Ollie's Bargain Outlet Holdings, told investors on a recent conference call.

While chlorine demand jumped in 2020 as Americans spent more time at home with their pools due to the coronavirus pandemic, this year's shortage stems largely from an incident at a plant in Westlake, Louisiana, in August.

The Bio-Lab pool-and-spa-treatment-products factory experienced a devastating fire on the morning of Aug. 27, 2020, following the landfall of Hurricane Laura. No one was injured, but the incident destroyed the facility's roof and hobbled production, according to a report by the U.S. Chemical Safety and Hazard Investigation Board. Chlorine gas was released during the incident.

The incident took place in Hampden County at the Teddy Bear Pools & Spas at 41 East St., in Chicopee around Sunday, April 25, after the car crashed right into the building, leaving a hole and causing damage to the inside of the store, said Detective Donna Liszku of the Chicopee Police.

The female driver lost control of the vehicle and hit the building, Liszku said. The driver, who suffered non-life-threatening injuries, was later arrested, police said.

Police did not have the charges the woman was arrested for.

Store owners said on Facebook the vehicle entered through the front window and traveled through the store, coming to rest in the lab area.

Hazmat was called due to the chemicals used for pool cleaning, Liszku said.

Fire crews were called to the Alexandra property this morning after reports of an explosion.

On arrival, emergency services found a man had suffered a minor burn.

Southern Fire and Emergency communication shift manager Andrew Norris said the man had been mixing the chemicals to clean his pool and got it wrong.

While it was still being investigated, Norris believed the man had likely put the chlorine into a vessel, possibly a bucket, before putting in the water.

(Reuters) - The U.S. Chemical Safety Board (CSB) said on Monday about 835 tons of a bleaching agent used in swimming pools was stored at the Louisiana plant where a chlorine chemical fire had erupted last week in the aftermath of Hurricane Laura.

The Bio-Lab chemical plant, owned by KIK Custom Products, manufactures chlorine-based cleaning products.

The chemical being stored at the facility was trichloroisocyanuric acid, which by itself is not combustible but is an explosion hazard as it increases the combustibility of other substances, according to the New Jersey Department of Health.

The facility had been shut in anticipation of the hurricane and no fatalities or injuries were reported.

Although the storm was not as bad as once feared, authorities were still warning it could leave people with out running water or power for weeks in the stifling late summer heat. It made roads impassable, tore roofs and walls off buildings and strew debris about.

It also led to fires at a chlorine plant in Westlake in the hard-hit Lake Charles area. On Saturday, crews were battling a new blaze, leading authorities to broaden a shelter-in-place order to 1 mile (1.6 kilometers) around the plant, state Department of Environmental Quality spokesman Greg Langley said.

It was at least the second fire at the BioLab plant, which makes swimming pool chemicals, after crews extinguished one that filled the skyline around Lake Charles with billowing black smoke after Laura hit. Authorities believe chemical reactions are causing the soaked chemicals to overheat and burst into flames.

Langley said he believed the new fire was about 90% out by Saturday afternoon.

The shelter in place means any residents of the industrial area around the plant are to stay inside with windows and doors shut, in summer heat with no electricity to power air conditioners.

Brookfield’s two fire companies were dispatched to Cedar Hill Road for a report of a pool house on fire shortly before 10 a.m.

Crews reported seeing a large plume of smoke and confirmed a working fire at the scene with possible exposure to a nearby house.

Firefighters started extinguishing the fire, but were presented with a possible hazmat condition due to the large amount of chlorine tablets inside the pool house.

At least 23 people fell ill shortly after 9 a.m. Friday morning after breathing in the noxious vapor at the Glacier Hills Association Pool in Parsippany, police said in a statement.

Investigators believe the toxic cloud was a mixture of pool chemicals that included chlorine and muriatic acid.

Chlorine is used to kill bacteria in pools. Muriatic acid, a diluted yet still corrosive form of hydrochloric acid. It is generally used to lower the alkalinity and pH levels in pool water.
