The bomb squad responded to Washington Christian Academy around 11:30 a.m. to discard what appeared to be, Picric Acid found in a classroom, according to Montgomery County Fire Public Information Officer Pete Piringer,

The team had to take the chemical to a secure and isolated construction site nearby at Batchelor’s Forest Road in Olney to properly dispose of it. Piringer said a loud "boom" was heard momentarily in the area.

In more than half of the schools, she found highly hazardous chemicals. They included explosive picric acid, toxic mercury, and toxic and corrosive hydrofluoric acid. While mercury was mostly sealed in old thermometers, once Álvarez Chávez and her team fotund an open container about the size of a baby-food jar full of the toxic metal. After that incident, the team adopted a new rule during inspections: don’t touch anything.
Álvarez Chávez, a professor and chemical safety expert at the University of Sonora, says these findings are deeply concerning and raise the question “Why are these chemicals here? We do not need HF in a high school.”

FALMOUTH — A hazardous chemical was detonated after being discovered near Falmouth Hospital on Friday.

Falmouth firefighters were called at 1:30 p.m. to meet with the state bomb squad at a parking lot near the hospital, Falmouth Fire Department Deputy Chief Chad Absten, said.

A Joint Hazard Incident Response Team, which includes state HazMat technicians and state police bomb technicians, responded when "some old picric acid" was found, Public Information Officer Jennifer Mieth wrote in an email.

The hazardous material was taken to the town leaf dump where it was detonated, Absten said.

"The bomb squad did end up countercharging the picric acid safely," Mieth wrote. "It can be very unstable when it gets old."

City firefighters say they got two calls this morning about picric acid, an old chemical that was used for medical purposes.

Hazleton firefighters say small packages of picric acid were found in two homes in the city earlier in the day.

The acid was once used as an antiseptic for coal miners, but once it crystalizes, it becomes explosive.

On Wednesday, March 21 around 10 a.m., downtown Globe was evacuated because of hazardous material found at three locations in and around the downtown area.

It all began early that morning when a cleaning crew was emptying a building near CVS on Broad Street.

Gila County Historical Society President Vernon Perry happened to walk by and noticed some bottles that looked familiar to him.

“They were cleaning out the downstairs of the Masonic building and I noticed some bottles that I thought looked cool,” Perry said.

Upon closer inspection, he saw the bottles contained Picric acid, so he brought it to the attention of the Globe Fire Department.

Picric acid is an organic compound once primarily used as an explosive, but that has also been used in medicine as an antiseptic and burn treatment, as well as in dyes. It is also used as a chemical reagent in metallurgy.

When the compound ages, it dehydrates and crystallizes, becoming more volatile than TNT.

“I know that the potential hazard for an explosion from crystallized Picric acid is great,” Perry said. “My sister taught chemistry in Ajo and found a crystallized Picric acid in her stockroom. The bomb squad removed it and detonated it the desert.”

As the work day was coming to an end , neighbors in the Shadowmoss subdivision in West Ashley came home to an explosion.
“He was concerned about the condition of the chemicals and that prompted the call,” said Mike Julazadeh, Chief Fire Marshall
For more than four hours, The City of Charleston Fire, Hazmat Team, the Bomb Squad, EMS and Charleston Police worked to safely remove the picric acid.
“We had additional concerns with the gas line cause once they determined the product had to be destroyed on site. They worried about the gas line that was in the vicinity so SCE&G actually responded to the scene as well.” Julazadeh said.

WESTWOOD, LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- Los Angeles police and bomb squad officials detonated a jar containing a potentially dangerous chemical at UCLA in Westwood on Saturday.

Acting out of an abundance of caution, the LAPD Bomb Squad detonated the 6-ounce jar of what officials determined was picric acid.

Someone took the substance to a household hazardous waste drop-off in the 600 block of S. Gayley Avenue, where LAFD officials responded at about 10:30 a.m.

Investigators said picric acid can be explosive, especially when it crystalizes. It has industrial and medical uses, and it was once used for manufacturing explosives, officials said.

After realizing what they were dealing with, UCLA police stopped traffic and cleared the area until the bomb squad, LAPD and LAFD disposed of the acid.

"Picric acid, when it's dry, it has the potential to explode, and it'll cause a pretty fair explosion and flying glass and it could hurt somebody pretty bad," said Sgt. Brian Washburn of UCLA police.

Officials said they cleared the situation without injuries, but added that the substance is not something that should be taken to a household hazardous waste drop.

The La Crosse County landfill was closed for part of the day Thursday after the discovery of an explosive substance in a customer’s car.

A technician at the Household Hazardous Materials facility noticed a container of picric acid in a box of materials being dropped off at the site about 3:15 p.m., said Randy Nedrelo, special waste manager for the La Crosse County Solid Waste department. He immediately cleared the building and called the fire department.

“It was clearly labeled, which was good,” Nedrelo said. “He knew right away what it was.”

If exposed to air or dropped, the dried-out material could have detonated, he said.

Nedrelo said the La Crosse Hazmat team ordered staff to cordon off a 150-foot radius around the vehicle. Explosive specialists from the Dane County Sheriff’s Department were called and used a charge and four gallons of gasoline to detonate the quarter pound of material about 8 p.m. in an open space at the landfill.

Fire crews were called to Park Grove shortly before 3.30pm today, when what was described as an ‘unstable substance’ was found at a house in the street.

Nearby Henleaze Infant and Junior schools - which were already finishing for the day - were evacuated and residents were told to keep their distance, as police and firefighters set up a 50-metre safety perimeter.

Remaining pupils were ushered out of a side entrance to avoid the cordoned-off area.

The school later confirmed that all the pupils were safe.

Eventually the cordon was relaxed and Park Grove residents were allowed to re-enter their homes, but they were told to ensure all windows and doors were shut.

One mother, who had been waiting for around an hour, said: "We were all told to leave very quickly.

"It was a bit frustrating because I've got a cake in the oven. I did manage to turn the oven off before I left."

The Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit were called to tackle the mystery substance and arrived on the scene shortly before 6.40pm.

At around 7.05pm a loud bang was heard as the soldiers carried out a controlled explosion to make the chemical safe.

Avon Fire and Rescue service said that the substance had been taken into the school playing field and surrounded by sand bags before the controlled explosion.

It was later revealed that the substance was picric acid, a volatile chemical which caused a similar alert when some was discovered at Clifton College last year.

A major incident emergency was declared by fire and police after they were contacted just before 3pm today, and a 50m cordon was imposed around the science block of the college in Guthrie Road.

The Army's EOD bomb disposal squad were called and are understood to have arrived shortly after 5pm.

Police and fire service bosses reassured members of the public that it was not a suspicious incident, and the cordon was precautionary.

The emergency services were called by staff after a small amount of the chemical picric acid was discovered dried out in the bottom of a test tube in the school's science block.

Picric acid is not hazardous in its usual liquid state, but if allowed to dry out it becomes highly explosive and unstable if moved abruptly.

For the college, that training involved evacuating the NWC Math and Science Building and emergency communications.

For local police and firefighters, the Cody Bomb Squad and the Wyoming Region 6 Emergency Response Team (based in Worland), the training provided a valuable practice in emergency response and safety skills.

NWC classes weren’t in session on Jan. 7.

Jay Dickerson, assistant professor of biology at NWC, said he found an old bottle of picric acid in a chemical storage area in Room 232 in the Math and Science Building.

“I was the discoverer,” Dickerson said. “Mike was the one to realize how dangerous it was.”

Dickerson was referring to Michael Cuddy, assistant professor of chemistry, who also serves as the NWC faculty safety officer.

“He was telling me a story about how they found it at (another college lab), and my eyes got real big,” Dickerson said. “I didn’t let him finish the story; I just dragged him over and said, ‘That’s what this is, isn’t it?’”

An individual dropped off the picric acid with a couple other vials they found in their basement, materials previously owned by their father, who had been a doctor. Someone from UMass Boston’s Office of Environmental Health and Safety noticed the chemicals and was concerned about them being handled safely, so they alerted a Green Harbors chemist to investigate, says UMass Boston Director of Communications DeWayne Lehman.
One chemical was identified as the extremely volatile picric acid, which is so unstable that even taking off the lid could spark a reaction. Someone immediately called 911, and the bomb squad, Fire Department, and ambulances were dispatched to the university.

HUNDREDS of students have been evacuated from the Australian Catholic University campus after a chemical spill in a laboratory this morning.

Roads around the university in Edward St, North Sydney, were closed as fire crews rushed to the scene.

The spill is understood to have involved a acid-based chemical of an explosive nature.

Superintendent Ian Krimmer from NSW Fire and Rescue said firefighters were in the process of assessing the nature of the spill.

“Someone noticed the leak and did the right thing,” Supt Krimmer said.

The entire campus has been evacuated and three fire crews are at the university with further experts on the way.

About 200 students had to leave the university and there were some classes in session at the time.

“Many university laboratories use this acid (picric acid), one of the technicians observed the container and he had some concerns about the seal,” Supt Krimmer said.

“To his credit he’s done the right thing and enacted their emergency procedures.

“This particular acid can become unstable and can be explosive in certain circumstances.”

He said the chemical was used for the development of proteins as an etching agent.

Regional duty officer for the Brisbane Region Inspector Steve Flori said an elderly resident of The Gap in Brisbane’s northwest discovered the substance at a home after her ex-husband - a former chemist - was admitted to hospital.

She later handed the chemical, believed to be about 150ml and held in a small glass container, over to police at about 11am.

The exact source of the materials is unknown, but firefighters suspect they were left by the homeowner, who is listed in town assessing records as Peter A. Nickerson, of Amherst, N.Y. A pathologist, Nickerson may at one time have done some chemistry at his 322 Bank St. home, according to Harwich Deputy Fire Chief Kent Farrenkopf.

Nickerson could not be reached for comment. Firefighters guessed that the chemicals had been in the home for decades, Farrenkopf said.

Mark Nickerson, no relation to the homeowner, who was the contractor hired to clean out the vacant house, found as many as 50 bottles of old and poorly labeled chemicals, Farrenkopf said. He called the Fire Department.

"He did the right thing and called us, rather than throw it in a dumpster," said Hyannis fire Lt. Norman "Spanky" Sylvester, an expert on hazardous materials removal.

Some chemicals, including picric acid, were highly explosive and had to be removed by the state police bomb squad, Sylvester said.

The Ventura County Fire Department responded to a home in the 100 block of Calle Vista about 10:35 a.m. An Oxnard Fire Department hazardous materials team and the Ventura County sheriff’s bomb squad also assisted because of the potential for more exposure and explosion.

Authorities removed the kit from the house and got rid of it safely.

Jody Williams and her family bought the Girl Scouts first-aid kit for $5 at a multi-estate sale Saturday in Ojai and later put it up for sale on eBay.
...
Williams learned the kit contained gauze pads soaked in medical-grade picric acid, an antiseptic that over time can crystallize, spark and create an explosion. She likened it to Pop Rocks.

Fire Department Lt. Kenneth J. Sagendoph said the call came in at 12:34 p.m. about the resident, who brought petroleum ether and picric acid, volatile and explosive chemicals, to the collection sponsored by Clean Harbors. The chemicals were turned away, and public safety officials were alerted to the situation, and responded to the resident’s address at Avalon Place.

Sagendorph said the resident took a box of old chemicals from an elderly relative to dispose of them.

“The residents were surprised. They didn’t expect the response they got,” Sagendorph said.

A section of North Street was closed, from Ridgeway Drive to Wilbert Terrace, for the investigation. In addition to police and fire, the state police bomb squad was called to help remove the chemicals because they could explode if combined. He said there were also unidentified chemicals in the box as well.

Police, fire and emergency medical services were dispatched to the antique store at 4:13 p.m. on Maple Avenue after the owner opened up the first-aid kit and found a suspicious chemical inside, according to Dave Rogers Jr., chief of New Egypt EMS who was on the scene.

Fire Chief Steve Morgan investigated and determined the chemical was picric acid, a chemical that was used by physicians back in the 1930s, Rogers said.

“It was a chemical that was used on gauze pads to treat burns many years ago,” Rogers said.

Rogers said that depending on how the chemical is handled, “it could become highly explosive.”

It was discovered around 5 p.m., and a few minutes before 8 p.m. crews closed off part of nearby Cameron Street and detonated the acid in a field nearby. People on scene could hear the boom.

However, the amount of picric acid found this time was about 1/4 of what was found last time.

Since the discovery came around 5 p.m. few people were inside the building. Capital Police, fire crews, the State Police Bomb Squad and the Department of General Services did respond.

Multiple police agencies, including the bomb squad, surrounded the State Department of Agriculture building, for hours Thursday night, trying to remove a highly explosive chemical from a lab inside.

Using a robot, they were successfully able to remove the chemical from the building and then around 9:30 p.m. you could feel the loud boom as they buried, then detonated the chemical at a field close by on Cameron Street.

While doing some inventory, an employee found a one-pound container of a chemical called picric acid on a shelf, in a plant lab inside the agriculture building. It looked like it had been left there after being used to test plants.

It's not highly explosive when in water. However, the chemical was found dry and crystalized.

"Since the chemical has crystalized, we called Department of General Services,” stated Department of Agriculture Press Secretary Samantha Krepps. “And we told them we had this chemical, they told us to evacuate the building we did so at 445 p.m."

Everything wrapped up safely. No injuries are reported.

Chemicals were taken from the basement of a Church Street home and then from the high school’s chemistry lab.

The Marshfield Fire Department said all of the dangerous chemicals found at both locations were removed and disposed of. No injuries were reported.

As of Monday night, classes at the high school, at 167 Forest St., had not been suspended or canceled as a result of the chemical removal.

The chemical removed from the high school was potassium, a substance commonly used in fireworks and pyrotechnics, said John Hall, chairman of Marshfield’s board of selectmen. By 7:30 p.m., the potassium was transported to the town landfill off Clay Pit Road, where it was disposed of.

Earlier in the day, picric acid, an explosive agent once used by military forces, was removed from a Church Street home, Marshfield Fire Chief Kevin Robinson said.

Robinson said the chemical operation at the high school occurred Monday afternoon only because the hazardous-materials team was already in town for the Church Street incident.

An explosion there in 2002 resulted in four people being treated at the scene for minor injuries and 10 taken to Royal Victoria Hospital for evaluation.

Picric acid, a pinkish-coloured liquid, was found in four five-gallon drums, but was stable, according to Barrie Fire Chief John Lynn.

WATERVILLE, N.Y. (WKTV) - Students and staff members at Waterville Junior and Senior High School were evacuated a little after Noon on Thursday the New York State Police Bomb Disposal Unit out of Albany was called in to assess and dispose of some potentially hazardous chemicals.

"We are concerned about one of the chemicals that is possibly dangerous and could call an explosion," says Gary Lonczak, superintendent of schools.

The main issue is a bottle of picric acid which is over 25 years old.

When in liquid form, the chemical is safe to use. However, the compound has solidified over the years, which means it could be potentially explosive if not removed properly.

"We acted as quickly as we could and we followed protocol and we got good advice from the State Police and hazmat unit," says Lonczak.

Administrators were never advised to evacuate students, but they say they did so as a precautionary measure.

Lonczak says he will send an informational letter to parents regarding the incident and on Friday, the school day will resume as usual.

The military unit was called in to the Catholic University School on Lower Leeson Street, after a quantity of picric acid was found. The bomb disposal team removed the chemical to a nearby piece of open ground, then carried out a controlled explosion.
Traffic was stopped in the area as the unit arrived at 4.15pm. The scene was declared safe at 6.10pm.
According to the Defence Forces, the substance was discovered during a routine audit of chemicals held in the school’s science department. Picric acid is a reagent which is routinely used in laboratories, but over time it can crystallise and become unstable.
It has caused a number of alerts in recent weeks, including some at schools in Limerick and Celbridge, and the offices of the pharmaceutical regulator in Dublin. The Leeson Street incident is the 21st time this year that the unit has dealt with dangerous substances, and its 186th call-out since January.

DALLAS — As they prepared last week for a training session, members of the Dallas bomb squad took a "live" call. Someone had discovered a decades-old first-aid kit that contained picric acid.

Though it had beneficial military and medicinal uses around World Wars I and II, the chemical becomes highly explosive when it gets old and crystallizes. A Pennsylvania teenager blew off his hand in 2003 when he mixed picric acid with other materials in what authorities said then was a bomb-making attempt.

"We went and got the chemical, took it out to our range and destroyed it," Dallas bomb squad Sgt. Dennis Wilson said. "That's what we do."

Exactly. When things blow up — or are about to — the bomb squad gets the call.

But in Dallas, it was the unit itself that nearly exploded.

DENVER - Bomb squads along the Front Range have been visiting some unlikely places: museums and the homes of collectors. The same volatile chemical keeps turning up.

Carol and Ernie Altvater of Denver did not expect they would find it in their basement among their Girl Scout memorabilia.

The Altvaters have been collecting the memorabilia for 20 years. They did not know that a piece of their collection could cause an explosion: a first aid kit with gauze pads soaked in picric acid.

"When you hear words like picric acid it's similar to when you hear structure fire or child choking. Your adrenaline goes a little higher," Capt. CJ Haberkorn with the Denver Fire HazMat team said.

Picric acid once was used as an antiseptic and anesthetic. When picric acid ages and crystallizes, it turns into a compound that can explode.

Haberkorn says his HazMat team trains for encounters with it.

"What's the biggest problem with picric acid if it's crystallized?" Haberkorn asked a class of Denver firefighters on Tuesday.

"Explosion," Haberkorn answered, picking up a cup to demonstrate. "Shock sensitive. If this is picric acid and it's crystallized and we go up and grab it we could actually blow it right there."

Denver firefighters see six to 12 picric acid calls a year.

Tudor Place executive director Leslie Buhler released this note to trustees at 5:55 pm. "During the textile inventory project a early 20th c. girl scout medical box was found. It contained picric acid gauze pads which are highly explosive. After several calls to D.C. government offices, we finally were told to call the police. That resulted in a response by more police, fire, and the bomb/hazardous waste specialists.

All staff and visitors were evacuated from the property and careful instructions were given to the HZMAT team. After 3 hours, they went into the house and removed the pads from the box. They took them out to the driveway area in a protected position and exploded them. All is safe with no injuries or damage."

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- The Colorado Springs Police Department's Hazardous Materials Team and Regional Explosives Unit was called out to a fire station Sunday because of concerns about the safety of a an antique Boy Scout first aid kit.
The owner of the kit was concerned that kit may contain a small amount of picric acid and brought the kit to Fire Station 5 in Colorado Springs for disposal.
The hazmat and explosives team remotely removed the hazard to a safe location and destroyed it, officials said.
Same Chemical Causes Other Evacuations

Picric acid was found in an antique Boy Scout first aid kit at the Pioneers Museum in Colorado Springs earlier this month. The museum was evacuated while the bomb squad and firefighters removed the material.
The same chemical was found in a historic doctor's bag last month in a warehouse in the Lowry area of Denver belonging to the Colorado Historical Society, said society spokeswoman Rebecca Laurie.
It too was picric acid, so the Denver bomb squad and a fire hazmat teams were called in to remove the acid.
"Sometimes, our researchers do come across chemicals in these kinds of medical hits or chemistry kits, things that were donated a long time ago," said Laurie. "If they're not sure what it is, they're trained to call 911."
Picric acid was stocked in pharmacies in the early 1920s as an antiseptic and as a treatment for burns, malaria, herpes and smallpox.
Other Items Dropped Off At Fire Stations

On Saturday, a 25 mm military training practice round was dropped off at another fire station in Colorado Springs for disposal.
Officials said if you find any possibly dangerous material such as an antique first aid kit, military ordnance or any other explosive material, call 911 and don't touch it. They said you should not bring the item into a police or fire station. Emergency personnel will respond to your location and safely dispose of the item.

The picric acid was marked as flammable or explosive and that prompted landfill operators to call the Sacramento Metro Fire District. The sheriff's department was also contacted.

Authorities at the college on St Stephen's Green contacted the emergency services shortly before 12.30pm after an internal audit of the lab found the chemical had degraded to a dangerous state.

Following an examination of the chemical by the bomb disposal team, the chemical was deemed unsafe to transport and was subsequently made safe through a controlled explosion on nearby waste ground.

The offending material is understood to have been 30g of picric acid, a potentially explosive substance which is commonly used by laboratories in the analysis of metals and ores.

When the substance goes beyond a certain timeframe, it can become dangerous to transport.

The picric acid was discovered in an Edward-Holman Science Center lab around 9 a.m., according to information from the Newberg Police Department and from a statement posted Tuesday morning on the George Fox University website.
When in its liquid form, picric acid is harmless, according to school officials, but the acid had been allowed to dry and hardened to a solidified state.
Police and fire departments responded; a bomb squad recovered the vial and detonated it just after noon.
Police said other vials were also located in the building and bomb technicians would be destroying those as well.
