TFD was called to BS&B Safety Systems near East 41st Street and South Sheridan Road around 7:15 a.m. They said sulfuric acid and phosphoric acid were poured into barrels that weren’t rated to handle the chemicals. The chemicals leaked out of the bottom and started spilling.

Two people were taken to a hospital as a precaution.

The leak is not threatening surrounding areas or businesses.

Firefighters were called at 3:21 p.m. to Collins Avenue and Main Street, where five gallons of the substance was spilled, Orange Fire Department Capt. Ryan O'Connor said.

The floor was designed to absorb the chemical if it spills, so the employee closed the door, got his co-workers out of the building and called authorities, O'Connor said.

The man sustained some skin irritation on the back of his neck and was taken to a hospital as a precaution.

Firefighters also evacuated neighboring businesses.

Firefighters from Anaheim and Huntington Beach were assisting in the hazardous materials response, O'Connor said.

Police closed Main Street in both directions from Collins Avenue to Shelley Court during the cleanup.

A spokesperson for the California Highway Patrol confirmed that a big rig carrying chemicals crashed on Hwy 101 south of Bell Springs Road about 5:15 a.m.. There was a hazardous waste spill. Hwy 101 is completely closed. There is no estimated time of opening.

Recently retired Laytonville Fire Chief Sue Carberry told us northbound traffic is being directed to Branscomb Road to the coast then north up Hwy 1 to Leggett and southbound traffic is being redirected using the same route.

Details are skimpy at this point as the area is remote and cell phone/as well as radio access is difficult.

The CHP Traffic Incident Information Page reports that the truck was hauling corrosives and is now leaking.

The Governor’s Office Emergency Services Hazardous Materials Spill Report states that about five gallons of a Hydroxide sodium (peroxide phosphoric acid and soduium hydroxide) solution spilled. The report said that a “freight truck overturned at the listed location due to unknown reasons. The incident resulted in a chemical spill to the roadway. The CHP and the local fire department are on-scene. No fires or injuries were reported and no waterways were impacted. The release has been stopped and the owner is en route to assist with the cleanup.”

The Hollister Fire Department, Hollister Police Department, San Benito County Office of Emergency Services and the San Benito/Monterey HAZMAT team responded on July 1 to a toxic chemical leak on the 400 block of Haydon Street in Hollister.

Hollister Fire Chief Bob Martin Del Campo said three people lived in the home where the leak occurred, and all are reported to be unharmed.

The compound found was closely related to white phosphorus also known as phosphoric acid. A chemical that is used in agriculture as a pesticide and fertilizer.

“We were told the house was built in the early 1900’s among fruit orchards,” Martin Del Campo said. He added perhaps the chemical leaked into the ground from old storage units.

The chemical is believed to have been ignited by the ambient oxygen. Phosphoric acid is one of the few chemicals that will react to ambient conditions.

When the fire department responded to the fire around 11 a.m. it was unclear what had started the fire. Martin Del Campo said a fence builder that was working in the area received a second degree chemical burn when he touched a smouldering ember. He was transported to the hospital by one of the residents.

“The residents showed us where it had caught fire earlier that day,” Martin Del Campo said on June 2. “At this time as the wind picked up. A white smoke began to emerge and started to spark and flame. Since there was no fuel causing the burn, it was then determined that HAZMAT needed to be brought in.”

Environmental investigators will use metal detectors to scan the shores of Enka Lake to determine if there are unknown hazards after a small explosion injured two firefighters April 26.

The North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality mandated the investigation after a local environmental group reported the explosion, according to state records.

The Biltmore Lake Association, which owns the lake and manages the neighborhood that surrounds it, contracted Mountain Environmental Services to investigate, and the state will oversee the work.

The consultant and its subcontractors will use electromagnetic metal detection and ground penetrating radar surveys, according to the work plan Mountain Environmental submitted to the state.

Mountain Environmental will use an excavator to remove any metal objects it finds, according to the plan.

A representative of Mountain Environmental said work has not commenced, but it will take place during the "next couple of weeks."

After the April explosion, a hazmat team from the Asheville Fire Department tested the soil beside the lake — which is newly exposed due to maintenance dredging — and found phosphoric acid.

"As we lifted the dirt to put into a sampling tube, the dirt would catch fire and burn for a good amount of time before it ran out of fuel and self-extinguished," the fire officials wrote in an incident report. "Each time we exposed any of the contaminated dirt to air, it would burn freely. With a shovel, we unearthed all of the product we found in that one area, let it burn until it self-extinguished."

CANDLER - Phosphoric acid found along the shoreline at Biltmore Lake exploded Tuesday night, injuring two firemen, officials say.

Two residents reported seeing a canister, about 1 liter or 1 quart in size, smoldering along the shoreline of the lake near the Biltmore Lake club house and Lake Drive, said Bill McMannis, on-site manager for Biltmore Lake.

County Dispatchers received a call about 6:46 p.m. reporting a small fire, according to notes at the Buncombe County Emergency Operations Center.

The Enka-Candler Fire Department arrived on scene shortly after to investigate, but in their efforts two firemen were injured, Assistant Chief Josh Howard said.

When firefighters attempted to extinguish the material by kicking dirt over it, the material exploded, McMannis said.

“At that point, they realized they weren’t dealing with the ordinary,” he said.

The firemen were transported to Mission Hospital with first- and second-degree burns to their hands and faces and released later Wednesday night, Howard said.

Following the explosion, the Asheville Fire Department's Hazmat Team performed a test and determined the substance was phosphoric acid. Firefighters then let the material burn on its own until the fire was out.

Officials said there was a small canister near the chemical, but they don't know if the chemical was inside that container or just along the shoreline.

One firefighter described the can as 4 to 5 inches large, similar to the size of a drink can, Howard said.

Officials believe the material began to smolder and burn after it was exposed to the air along the shoreline because of lake levels being down by seven feet, McMannis said. In recent weeks, the lake has been drained to perform dredging, which is part of a restoration project.

The North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service HAZMAT team put up a 100-metre cordon around the Molson Coors brewery off Station Road, Tadcaster, after a spillage inside the building at about midday on Thursday.

A spokeswoman for the fire service said sodium hypochlorite used in the cleaning of lines within the brewery process had mixed with phosphoric acid, causing a reaction that left two men in need of treatment by paramedics at the scene. Nobody was believed to be seriously injured.

North Yorkshire Police were also called.

Other employees saw the man fall and activated the facility’s “emergency response system,” said Robert Fredere, general manager of the plant. The man was immediately extracted from the tank, the acid was washed off and 911 was called, Fredere said.

Fredere told reporters that the incident was under investigation and that safety meetings were slated for employees to review procedures.

The spill at Elm Knoll Farm, located at 294 East Canaan Road, was reported to be under control shortly after 4:30 p.m. According to emergency radio reports, the chemicals involved were sodium hypochlorite and phosphoric acid.

According to Norfolk Public Information Officer Jonathan Barbagallo, “inappropriate amounts” of the chemicals were mixed after a pump malfunction at the farm.

“[They were] two common cleaning chemicals that they use to clean the milking equipment in the barn,” said Barbagallo, who said two workers in the area spotted the vapor cloud from the chemical reaction and called the fire department.

PASCAGOULA, Miss. (AP) - An Environmental Protection Agency inspector, during a tour of Mississippi Phosphates in 2009, walked through a puddle so acidic it ate leather off the inspector’s steel-toed boots.

The inspector’s vivid account is one of dozens from an inspection that year that yielded a biting administrative order from the EPA to the company, using the words “imminent and substantial” danger when referring to the possible impact on human health or the environment.

The federal agency ordered the company to fix uncontrolled leaks and spills of sulfuric acid on its grounds, and stop untreated discharges to the adjacent bayou and uncontrolled spills and leaks of phosphoric acid to unlined ditches. The agency found more issues in 2011, and in 2012, reinforced its orders to clean up. Then last year, the state Department of Environmental Quality shut down two plants at the fertilizer manufacturer because they were creating an acid mist that caused neighboring industry to evacuate workers.

All the while, a neighborhood less than a mile away says it was unaware of the reports. Cherokee Forest has 132 homes along heavily industrialized Bayou Casotte in east Pascagoula, where several industries contribute heavily to air emissions.

The unidentified man was taken to Mercy Regional Medical Center around 3:15 p.m., according to Herb de la Porte, LifeCare Ambulance vice president. De la Porte said the man had to be tested for contamination by the Lorain County Hazardous Materials Response Team before being transported.
The team is comprised of members of Lorain County fire departments. Firefighters and team members departed the plant about 6:50 p.m. Homolya said Occupational Health and Safety Administration officials responded to the mill and the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Coast Guard Lorain station were notified.
Homolya said an accident occurred while chemicals were being removed from five old storage tanks Republic plans to reuse. Chemicals were being pumped into an approximately 8,000-gallon truck by workers from Youngstown-based Odyssey Environmental Services LLC.
A report on the accident was unavailable Thursday, but Homolya said the chemicals included aluminum hydroxychloride, phosphoric acid, phosphoric acid ester, sodium hydroxide and sodium nitrate. One of the chemicals ruptured a hose to the truck, causing a brownish, yellowish plume about 3 feet wide and 15 to 20 feet high to rise.

The incident was reported to 911 at 12:40 p.m.

Boulder fire officials told the Daily Camera it appeared chlorine and phosphoric acid were accidentally spilled into a floor drain in the boiler room in the east wing of the courthouse, where it mixed with water containing potassium hydroxide and sodium hydroxide. A building worker told 7NEWS a maintenance work mixed the chemicals with water.

Fire spokeswoman Kim Scott told 7NEWS the chemical mixture created fumes that wafted through the east wing of the building, irritating people's eyes and throats.

Tasmania Fire Service crews spent today cleaning up after the chemical spill near the southern Tasmanian town.

It happened when four wagons of a south-bound Tasrail train derailed about 9.30pm yesterday.

The TFS said no one was injured in the incident but a quantity of chemicals was spilled trackside.

No residential properties near the accident site had been affected by the chemical hazard, the TFS said.

TasRail said two of the four derailed wagons were empty, while the other two were carrying phosphoric acid and sodium hyposulphite.

"As soon as the derailment occurred, TasRail promptly notified the TFS and the Environment Protection Authority," TasRail CEO Damien White said in a statement this afternoon.

"All TasRail locomotives carry spill kits and the prompt action taken by staff to place bunding around the tanktainer resulted in the initial spillage being confined.

The fire on eastbound Interstate 10 started about 6:25 a.m. east of Cook Street.

The driver, who wasn’t hurt, tried to put out the blaze with the truck’s fire extinguisher, California Highway Patrol Officer Joe Zagorski said.

“The entire cab of the truck was engulfed in fire when fire department personnel arrived,” he said.

The trailer was carrying 5,000 gallons of phosphoric acid, which is used in antiseptics, medicated powders, skin lotions and enamels.

The fire didn’t reach the acid, which did not leak, according to Zagorski and the Riverside County Fire Department.

The accident threw at least three chemical products into the ditch causing the containers to leak or rupture. They include three 55-gallon drums of phosphoric acid, three to five 275-gallon plastic containers of sodium and potassium hydroxide mix, and one 55-gallon drum of chlorine bleach.

"Fortunately, there have been no injuries and the chemicals do not appear to have impacted state waters," said Ken Hessenius, supervisor of the Spencer DNR field office.

The male professor, whose name was not immediately released, apparently shielded students from much of the blast, rushing to aid a group experimenting with a mixture of phosphoric acid and an alcohol called 2-methylcyclohoexanol that began to smoke, according to students and college officials.

"He became aware of the imminent danger and did take the brunt of the explosion himself," said Karen Nippert, vice president for institutional advancement for Southwest.

"There was just a loud explosion," said Troy Cox, 21, in a physical science class next door when the explosion shook room 232 in Building M, at the corner of Union and Manassas, just after noon.

"I saw the teacher was bleeding," from arm and head injuries, Cox said.

(CNN) -- Firefighters are trying to confirm what chemicals were involved in an explosion around noon Wednesday at the campus of Southwest Tennessee Community College in Memphis.
"Twelve students were in the classroom. The instructor was injured, suffered cuts to the face, upper body and arms. He was transported to the hospital," said Lt. Wayne Cooke of the Memphis Fire Department. "Three students are being evaluated because of respiratory concerns."
The other students were under observation, he added.
Southwest Tennessee Community College spokesman Robert Jackson released a statement describing a fiery mushroom from the explosion, and saying the cause was thought to be a chemical mixture of phosphoric acid and 2-methylcyclohexanol.
Emergency responders were told 18 milliliters "of chemicals or product" were being heated in a container at the time of the explosion, Cooke said, and a hazardous materials team was working to confirm what chemicals were involved.
The building was evacuated when emergency units arrived on the scene, he said.

Clearwater Mayor John Harwood says provincial emergency program crews have determined all of the hazardous chemicals remain in the ground and none of the acid reached nearby Raft River. But Environment officials say clearing away the contaminated earth will be a painstaking process that will take days. The earth must be scraped away and the ground below tested until there is no more sign of the chemicals.
RCMP say the crash occurred as the semi-trailer was passing a minivan. The driver of the smaller vehicle suffered serious injuries and two passengers in the van were slightly injured. The semi driver was not hurt.

Part of Interstate 81 South in Schuylkill County was shut down for three hours Tuesday after a truck carrying phosphoric acid spilled almost all of its load during a slow leak found at a weigh station.
Four troopers inspecting trucks at the station — near mile marker 132.4 — were hospitalized after being exposed to the chemical — a corrosive, but low-hazard chemical that causes eye, skin and respiratory irritation.
Because officials believe the truck had spilled about 2,600 pounds of the acid while driving for several miles, the road was closed while the Department of Environmental Protection, Hazmat, local fire companies, and a helicopter overhead made sure the spill was cleaned up.
