BPA and BPS are considered endocrine disruptors and may cause other human health problems.

"We are now pursuing receipt paper that is free of phenol chemicals (including BPA and BPS), which we will be rolling out to all stores as soon as possible," Mark Sloan, Trader Joe's vice president of product marketing, said in a statement.

According to a study released last week by the Michigan-based Ecology Center, traces of either BPA and BPS showed up in 93% of 207 store register receipts tested. The center stated that tests were done on thermal paper receipts from Trader Joe's, Kroger, Meijer and TJX stores, along with receipts from gas stations, theaters, libraries, small and independent businesses and others.
Science East Chemical Spill Sends Nine to Hospital

A delayed onset of chemical burn symptoms led to a chaotic scene Tuesday, Sept. 26 at the Science East building, where a chemical spill during an organic chemistry lab sent nine students and their professor to the hospital.

According to Bradon Rossie, Kochville Township Fire Department Inspector, the spill took place in SE 239.

Only four of the students exhibited the skin rash that resulted from contact with phenol, also known as carbolic acid, a solid crystalline substance which requires careful handling due to the chemical burns that contact with the substance and the vapors it produces can cause. The other five students and the professor were also rushed to the hospital via emergency vehicle.

SVSU’s official statement reads that the first student to complain of skin irritation on their arms went to the hospital around 1:45 p.m. without a 911 call being placed. Soon after, three more students in the classroom noticed they too had skin irritation. The Kochville Township Fire Department received the emergency call just after 3:00 p.m.

Once it was established that a chemical spill had taken place, University Police responded to the incident by cordoning off the hallway and restricting access to the affected area of Science East. Students were quarantined and treated by medical responders after being moved to an adjacent classroom. They were then decontaminated inside the classroom and taken to the hospital. Medical personnel at the scene stated the patients would likely be split between multiple area hospitals.

Kochville, Zilwaulkee, Thomas and Bridgeport Township Fire Departments responded with multiple fire engines, as did Mobile Medical Response with ambulances. A biohazard response team from Saginaw County Hazardous Materials responded as well.

Decontamination procedures required the affected students and professor to remove their clothes, have their skin cleaned of any phenol residue and to cover themselves in sterile sheets while they were transported to the hospital. All those affected by the chemical spill were able to walk under their own power from the second floor of Science East to the waiting emergency vehicles.

According to those close to the situation, the deputy was Lawson Dry, who worked at both the Jasper Police Department and the Jasper County Sheriff's Office in recent years.
According to the Orange County Sheriff's Office, Dry responded Monday to a call on Highway 105 just north of Vidor at about 11 p.m.
Once on scene, the sheriff's office said a woman handed Dry a bottle, which turned out to be liquified phenol, a corrosive acid. Officials noted that exposure to just 15 milliliters of the tissue-eating chemical can be deadly.
Dry got a small amount on his hands and also inhaled the fumes from chemical. Dry was transported by ambulance to CHRISTUS Hospital St. Elizabeth where he underwent emergency treatment and he was released early Tuesday morning.

At 10:28 p.m., the Fayetteville Fire and Emergency Management Department responded to Hexion Chemicals in the 1400 block of Industrial Drive off Old Wilmington Road, a news release said.

Plant employees told the first responders that a line connected to a rail car transporting phenol had ruptured, according to the release.

Phenol is a chemical primarily used to make nylon and other synthetic fibers, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The plant and surrounding roads were briefly closed by the Fayetteville Police Department and the Cumberland County Sheriff's Office as a precaution, Martin said. The plant and all roads surrounding it have since been reopened.

Thick black smoke enveloped the area as chemicals stored in drums burst into flames while fire fighters struggled throughout the day and could control the flames only by evening. Fire department personnel douse the fire at Mallapur industrial area in Nacharam in Hyderabad on Friday | a suresh kumar While no one was injured in the fire, the intensity was such that some burning material from the factory blew up and landed in adjoining areas leading to chaos. "Drums filled with chemical materials including methanol, sulphuric acid, caustic potash and phenol were kept in godown. Fire broke out from the manufacturing unit due to severe heat inside the premises. Some drums filled with chemicals exploded and landed in nearby areas leading to chaos," said Ranga Reddy district fire officer T Mahender Reddy. Meanwhile, fire fighters who had a tough time controlling the fire, said, "The temperature inside was almost 1,500 degrees and we suspect that the reactors may have exploded.

The practice manager of an Auckland medical centre evacuated in an emergency chemical spill callout has downplayed the incident, describing the big response as “totally unnecessary”.

Margie Geen from Dodson Medical Centre in Milford was astonished by the extent of the emergency response on Friday when a small amount of phenol solution was accidentally spilled in the surgery.

At least four fire trucks, a hazmat unit and a command vehicle attended the callout. Some fire fighters were dressed in full hazard suits, Dodson Ave was closed to all traffic and a decontamination unit with showers was set up in a nearby car park.

Five St John vehicles, including three ambulances, also attended. Three practice staff members were sent to North Shore Hospital, one with a burn on her leg.

Facts wrong

Ms Geen says some of the details about the incident reported in the media were wrong. One newspaper reported nine people had been hospitalised.

“I can’t believe how things get so twisted.”

She says the amount of phenol involved in the spill was 90ml, rather than the 300ml reported by the fire service. Phenol is used to treat ingrown toe nails.

A burn to the leg and fumes inhalation

A nurse who accidentally knocked the bottle of phenol out of a cupboard suffered a 2cm burn to her leg, Ms Geen says.

"Extra precautions are being taken as a result," he said.

St Johns ambulance were called to the scene around 1pm on Friday.

Firefighters from Takapuna, Devonport, Birkenhead and Ponsonby were in attendance.

Birkenhead fire station officer John Barlow said the substance - a 90 per cent phenol solution concentrate - was commonly used as a steriliser or antiseptic.

It could be lethal if inhaled.

Three hundred mls of the substance - which has now been absorbed by sand - was spilt.

Fire Service communications said the premises had been evacuated and firefighters were suited in fully encapsulated chemical splash suits.

Employees of the Jessie Trice Community Health Center near Northwest 53rd Street and 22nd Avenue were moving things around when the bottles broke, according to Miami-Dade Fire Lt. Troy Maness.

One employee had direct exposure to the solution call Phenol, while six others suffered from inhalation exposure.

Miami-Dade Fire Chief Gary Fregeolle said all seven were taken to the hospital.

“It's a stronger solution that I have heard is for cleaning, disinfecting, some times used for surgical procedures,” he said.

Maness said all of the people transported were employees of the center.

“As always we would like to make certain that our patients, as well as our staff, are safe so those individuals went to the ER as a precautionary measure,” Deborah George, chief clinical officer for the center, told Miami Herald news partner CBS4.

Attorney General Lisa Madigan filed a lawsuit Friday asking a judge to order a review of what caused an explosion earlier this month at a chemical factory that left two workers hurt.

Madigan filed the lawsuit Friday at the request of the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency, seeking an injunction that would order Blue Island Phenol of Alsip to conduct an analysis of the blast and its environmental impact.

The lawsuit also accuses the plant of multiple violations of the Illinois Environmental Protection Act.

The explosion at 11:30 a.m. Dec. 13 rocked the plant at 131st Street and South Homan Avenue, triggering a major emergency response from 40 area fire departments.

Two employees were burned in the explosion and fire, which destroyed a storage facility and damaged other buildings at the plant.

The explosion and fire followed a chemical release in the factory’s cumene unit, which manufactures phenol and acetone. The process to produce the chemicals runs continuously, and the two reactors used to store the chemicals were not damaged, plant manager Bill Moffatt said after the explosion.

In a statement Friday, Hannaford Supermarkets said a compounding agent was accidentally spilled in the pharmacy during an inventory process. A representative of the company later clarified that the chemical was phenol, which he described as being used to make medicated cream.

Belfast Fire and Rescue Department responded to the spill at 3:45 p.m. Thursday and notified state Department of Environmental Protection, according to the statement. Additionally three Hannaford employees who work in the pharmacy and were in the immediate area of the spill on Thursday were taken to Waldo County Hospital and released later the same day.

The Pharmacy was closed for the remainder of the day on Thursday. The supermarket and pharmacy were closed on Friday until 11 a.m. to monitor clean-up and ensure air quality. MDEP was on-site Friday morning to determine that there were no health or safety issues requiring follow-up.

Speaking on Friday afternoon, Peter Blanchard, MDEP director of emergency services said roughly a half-liter of an aqueous phenol solution was spilled. Phenol vapors can irritate the eyes and respiratory tract, contact can irritate the skin.

Blanchard said the material was removed from the site and properly disposed of.

Hazmat crews were called to the scene shortly after 1pm after a small bottle of Phenol was spilled in a room in the ambulatory care treatment centre.

Health Service Director, Andrew Hughes says patient care continued, the waiting room remained opened and only one room was isolated.

"Part of the protocol is, when it first spilled, it wasn't know what the substance was. So, we just decided to take the necessary precautions and hence, you get the response."

The chemical is used for inner ear treatment.

MILLBURY — A dozen people, mostly rescue workers, were taken to the hospital after a hazardous chemical spill yesterday at Barrday Composite Solutions, 86 Providence Road (Route 122A).

Nobody was seriously hurt, and the spill was contained with only a small amount getting into the ground, officials said. They said the public was never at risk.

“The situation is very much under control. The leak has stopped. There were very minor injuries,” Millbury Fire Chief Matthew R. Belsito said around 6 last night. “It is my understanding at this time that everyone was transported as precautionary and they will probably be treated and released.”

About 1:35 p.m. yesterday, the town’s 911 dispatcher received a call saying a Barrday worker had been doused with the chemical phenol, Chief Belsito said.

Michael E. Buck, president of the company, said a company engineer was working on an outside storage tank containing about 10,000 gallons of phenol when the accident occurred. When the worker removed a wire, the tank sprung a leak and liquid phenolic resin sprayed onto the worker’s arm, he said. Mr. Buck said the engineer and a second employee who was having trouble breathing were taken to a hospital for treatment.

When he arrived at the scene shortly after the initial call, Chief Belsito said, he immediately called Worcester Special Operations and summoned the state’s hazardous materials teams. He said the source of the leak was an approximately three-fourths-inch hole in the piping connected to the tank.

Andrew Delisio, the hazmat technician team leader on the site, estimated 5,000 to 6,000 gallons of phenol escaped.

“At no time was the public in any danger,” Chief Belsito said.

A MAN has died from exposure to chemicals following an explosion at a factory in Laverton North.
MFB spokesman John Rees said the man had tried to decontaminate himself by washing the chemicals off in a shower, but collapsed and suffered a heart attack after the incident last Thursday.

Paramedic team manager Mark Collins said

paramedics treated the man for about 20 minutes, managing his airway and using IV drugs in an attempt to restart his heart. "Unfortunately the man died at the scene."

The incident at the Nufarm factory in Pipe Road was the third work-related fatality in Victoria this month, prompting WorkSafe to plead with employees and employers to continually assess their safety.

The 54-year-old man ingested molten phenol after working on an exterior pipe when a flange broke and sprayed him with the toxic chemical.

According to information from the Flagstaff Fire Department, six units from the fire department, a total of 17 firefighters, responded to the clinic on North Fourth Street at about 3 p.m. on a report of a chemical spill of phenol.
Phenol, when it turns to a vapor, is toxic and can cause extreme cases of injury and death, according to the fire department.
Andrew Saal, chief medical officer at the clinic, said the building was evacuated once the spill was reported. Hazardous Materials crews in protective gear went into the building, isolated the spill and ventilated the building.
