(PIX11) — One person was injured and multiple subway lines were temporarily suspended in Manhattan Friday during a hazmat incident involving pepper spray inside the 14th Street-Union Square station, MTA and FDNY officials said.

Service on the N‌‌, Q‌‌, R‌‌, W‌‌ and Nos. 4‌‌, 5‌‌, and 6‌ trains was suspended in much of Midtown and Lower Manhattan around 10:30 a.m., per NYC Transit. L‌ trains also were not running in Manhattan.

Service on all lines resumed about an hour later. Subway riders should expect residual delays, particularly on the D, F, and M lines, according to NYC Transit.

An NYPD spokesperson told PIX11 News a dispute on an R train led someone to spray a canister of pepper spray. An investigation was ongoing.

The FDNY received a call around 10:15 a.m. for a report of someone spraying peppery spray on the platform of the 14th Street-Union Square station. One person was taken to the hospital for treatment, per FDNY officials.

Federal prosecutors say Daniel Caldwell, 49, used a chemical spray against a line of officers that were blocking rioters from entering the Capitol. It happened amid a massive melee with police, who used batons and pepper spray to fend off the crowd, according to footage of the incident that was cited in court filings.

Hours after the riot, Caldwell spoke about the incident in a video that was posted to the far-right social media site Parler, according to prosecutors. The clip was among hundreds of videos later published by ProPublica.

(Reuters) - Police across the United States are using a variety of weapons on protesters as demonstrations against the police killing of George Floyd intensify. Often described as “non-lethal,” these weapons include tear gas, pepper spray and rubber bullets. They have sometimes seriously injured protesters.

TEAR GAS:

Tear gas has been widely and frequently used by police to disperse protesters. CS or CN gas are chemical compound powders that spray from canisters. They produce a burning sensation in the eyes and mouth that incapacitates.

PEPPER SPRAY AND PEPPER BALLS

Police have shot protesters with pepper spray both from handheld devices and projectiles. While pepper spray is chemically distinct from tear gas, it produces similar effects: burning and watering of the eyes and skin.

Police have also fired pepper balls, small projectiles containing chemical irritants. Such projectiles can contain PAVA spray, an irritant similar to pepper spray, as well as CS gas. The balls can be shot from launchers or modified paintball guns.

Police were called to the school about 2 p.m. on reports of a natural gas leak, Park City fire information officer Tricia Hazelrigg said. Law enforcement officials arrived and confirmed the substance wasn't natural gas but an "unknown substance," she said.

The student later called the school and admitted to releasing pepper spray, Park City Police Capt. Phil Kirk said. He did not immediately know how the pepper spray had gotten into the school's air system.

As of about 4:30 p.m., police hadn't interviewed the student or taken him or her into custody. Additional details about the student were not immediately available.

The boy was playing soccer on the Old Orchard Fields on Eric Trail with his mother and siblings when he went in to use the portable toilet on the field and emerged with some sort of chemical burns, according to Vernon police.

According to his mother, whom police identified as Danielle Filato, the boy came out "screaming" and was developing redness, burning and swelling.

In a Facebook post Thursday evening, Filato responded to numerous commenters on the Vernon Facebook page, stating that her son was "doing well," but called the incident "scary, stressful and confusing."

According to Filato, her son had touched the handle of the portable toilet and rubbed his face and eyes because he was sweaty, which burned his face. He was also burned from the toilet seat.

Not realizing what was going on, Filato said she wiped her son's face with toilet paper, which she later found was also covered in pepper spray.

Monterey >> Portola Hotel & Spa in downtown Monterey was the scene of a hazardous materials situation on Wednesday when two hotel employees were overcome by a noxious substance.

At about 11:45 a.m., the Monterey Police Department, Monterey Fire Department, and Monterey County Hazmat responded to the hotel at 2 Portola Plaza regarding a possible hazmat exposure.

When crews arrived, it was determined that someone had discharged a substance consistent with Oleoresin Capsicum pepper spray inside one of the hotel rooms. Two hotel employees who were exposed to the spray were treated and one of them was transported to a local hospital.

OC pepper spray is a substance used for self-defense and in the outdoors to fend off aggressive animals. When inhaled, the spray can cause irritation to the respiratory system, making it difficult to breathe. When sprayed onto a person or animal, it can cause the eyes to swell shut and cause discomfort to the affected areas though the effects are not permanent.

The teenagers were heard screaming in agony as the effects of the spray kicked in.

The group of teens at Barberton High School in Ohio willingly participated with their parents' consent on how effective and potent pepper spray can be.

“It's like a volcano in my eyes!” one student shouted.

The shocking video, shot by a parent, is causing a firestorm on social media.

“Horrifying,” one person called it.

“No one should have to go through this,” said another.

Another added: “They're being sprayed with a toxic substance."

It happened during a class on criminal science technology, and the teacher is the town’s former police chief.

The parents of each participating student signed waivers that warned: “Each student will receive a quick ‘burst’ with this chemical agent. It will cause irritation and a burning sensation to the eyes and nasal area for approximately 30 minutes to 1 hour."

Three people were taken to a hospital and 12 others reported being affected by the spray at the mall in the 3200 block of 20th Avenue, said Fire Department spokesman Jonathan Baxter. He said the hospitalized people were in very stable condition, and the others were either treated at the scene or refused treatment.
The chemical was reported shortly after 8 p.m. The 911 caller reported that it was pepper spray, Baxter said, and officers believe it was either pepper spray or something similar. He said the situation was under control by 9:30. There was no immediate report of a source, a suspect or a motive for the spraying.

There was a report of a “strange odor that overwhelmed” someone at the hotel at Garden Grove Boulevard and Haster Street at around 9:20 p.m., Garden Grove Fire Capt. Thanh Nguyen said.

Hazmat teams were called to the scene and 22 people were asked to leave rooms on the third floor while they investigated. After searching, hazmat workers discovered that a guest had sprayed pepper spray in their room, Nguyen said. Police officers were investigating why the spray was used.

The fumes spread and some people had been exposed when the smell was first reported but no one needed medical treatment, Nguyen said.

Firefighters were still ventilating the building at about 11:30 p.m., but guests were expected to be let back in soon after.

MILFORD — A canister of pepper spray was released at Lauralton Hall Tuesday morning, affecting about 40 students, none seriously.
There were no reports of foul play at the school, and it wasn’t clear later Tuesday how or why irritant was discharged. But fire officials indicated the spay came from the type of canister used for personal self-defense.
Milford Fire Department Battalion Chief Anthony Fabrizi said only 10 of students at the private Catholic girls’ school required treatment at area hospitals. He said there were no severe reactions to the spray among the students who were exposed to it.
“The big fear in a situation like this is that it might trigger an allergic reaction and anaphylactic shock, which, of course, would be a very serious, life-threatening event,” Fabrizi said. “But, fortunately, no such reactions were seen.”
Officials decided to dismiss the girls early on Tuesday — not because of any lingering chemicals, but rather because the incident left the academic day in tatters. Lauralton Hall is expected to be open as usual Wednesday morning.

The Linden Board of Education released the following statement by Superintendent of Schools, Danny A. Robertozzi:

"This morning several cafeteria staff workers reported feeling ill while in their work area at Linden High School. The Linden Fire Department responded and recommended an evacuation pending clearance from the Union County Hazmat team.

"As a result, we instituted our evacuation/relocation plan and moved students from the main high school building to the athletic field. At 10:58 a.m. it was determined that all Linden High School students would be dismissed for the day.

"At this time, the investigation is unfounded. The Linden Fire Department has reported that it is possible the affected workers were exposed to pepper spray; however, this substance has since dissipated and is not detectable.

The evacuation occurred at the American Motel near Interstate 70 and Kipling Road after a call came in around 6:30 p.m. reporting that several people said they were sick. Hazmat crews showed up and the entire hotel ended up being evacuated.
Hundreds of people were forced out and three people were taken to the hospital to be evaluated. Fire officials told CBS4’s Jeff Todd that was precautionary, but one resident said her friend was vomiting after something came through the ventilation system.
Hazmat crews suited up and found a room on the third floor with a substance on the wall. Tests showed it was a substance similar to pepper spray
“My husband and I came out of the fifth floor and there was kind of an odor and we kind of had a little bit of coughing and a couple minutes later the cops showed up and told us we needed to go,” motel guest Randi Eckman said.

The building was evacuated, including the Mattamy Athletic Centre next door that’s part of Ryerson University. It was reopened around 10:30 p.m., when fire officials turned the building back over to its owners.
Five fire trucks were called to the scene, alongside hazmat crews, around 7:40 p.m.
Toronto paramedics attended the scene and took one victim to hospital with throat irritation. Several others reported trouble breathing, and coughing, fire officials said.
Toronto police have not yet been able to determine the cause, but are investigating reports that the irritant was pepper spray.
Sgt. Craig Somers of Toronto police told reporters at the scene that the symptoms were reported by “more than one person.”
“We’re obviously treating it very seriously,” he said. “Toronto fire is inside the building now. I have been in myself and experienced the sensation. There’s no smell — it is some sort of an airborne sensory irritant.”

OAKLAND, Calif. — A puddle of pepper spray from a broken canister caused a hazardous materials scare at a post office in Oakland's Laurel District Wednesday morning after eight postal workers had bad reactions to the chemical.
Dispatchers received reports of a hazardous material at the post office 3630 High Street, near MacArthur Blvd around 10 a.m. after two employees began complaining of eye irritation and coughing from a puddle of mysterious liquid in the office workroom.
The post office was subsequently shut down during the investigation, Postal Service spokesman Augustine Ruiz said.
In all, eight postal employees were quarantined inside the building after six other employees walked through the workroom, according to Ruiz.

A forklift punctured a 5-gallon barrel of liquid capsaicin about 2:30 a.m. outside a building at the parcel carrier's global hub in Memphis. FedEx spokesman Chris Stanley said the chemical was going to be used to make hot sauce, adding, "Basically, it was the hot in hot sauce."

The fire department reported 117 workers were exposed, at least 10 complained of chest pains or trouble breathing, and two went to the hospital as a precaution.

The brief shutdown, less than an hour, did not affect FedEx's system, Stanley said.

An EMS Plan 1 and a Level 1 Hazmat were called at the school in the 2000 block of North Mobile Avenue in the Galewood neighborhood, according to fire media information.

At least five ambulances were sent to the school as a precaution.

Initial reports said the odor may have been pepper spray from the exterior of the school that came in through ventilation, officials said.

When firefighters arrived at the scene, there was no apparent evidence of pepper spray in the interior of the school, but it was detected in a meter reading, officials said.
