Since March, the 970 students at Burlington High School have had only one day of in-person education: Their first day, in September, before the discovery of airborne PCBs — carcinogenic chemicals — shuttered the building for the fall.

Sara Farnsworth’s son, a freshman at BHS, was “super excited” on that first day. Now, facing indefinite remote learning, “he is struggling,” his mother said, and as a single parent of two, working outside of the home has become impossible. The district promises a return to in-person learning by the spring, but Farnsworth is worried. “We’re just losing time,” Farnsworth said. “I think that even waiting until January [to return] is too long.”

Farnsworth is part of a group of parents pushing for the reopening of Burlington High School, despite elevated levels of PCBs found throughout the building. The “Open BHS” coalition, according to its website, has 131 members “and counting.” At school board meetings, some Open BHS parents have claimed that the levels of PCBs recorded at the high school are safe for students and staff, blaming the Vermont Department of Health for holding the school to “stringent” health standards.

PLAINVILLE — Despite the recent discovery of additional hazardous materials in Old Linden Street School, the project is expected to be completed by the end of the month, says Town Manager Robert E. Lee.
Within the last two weeks, demolition crews with Manafort Brothers discovered a black paint on interior masonry, school perimeter walls and behind wooden walls in the east wing of the building.
Testing confirmed that this paint contained polychlorinated biphenyl — PCB — which is now considered a hazardous, carcinogenic material. 800 to 1,000 tons of the material must be removed from the interior masonry and perimeter walls and 600 to 700 tons must be removed from the east wing before the project can continue.
Asbestos and other hazardous materials had been removed earlier in April, prior to the demolition beginning.
However, as Jeff Duigou of Eagle Environmental Inc. told the Capital Projects Building Committee during their June 27 meeting, it is common to find additional hazardous materials within old buildings once walls begin to be removed.

MALIBU, California — Malibu High School buildings will be cleaned and tested during the winter holiday break after a cancer-causing chemical was found in some rooms, the school superintendent said.

Some rooms will be cleaned of dust and air and dust samples will be taken to ensure they are safe before classes resume on Jan. 6, Sandra Lyon, superintendent of the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District, said in a Thursday letter to parents and staff, the Santa Monica Daily Press (http://bit.ly/1bXHRsl) reported.

In October, 20 staff members, including three diagnosed with thyroid cancer, wrote a letter to the district complaining of a variety of health-related issues. Rumors spread about potential contaminants.

Students from 11 classrooms were switched to other rooms on campus and a nearby elementary school.

Later testing at dozens of locations throughout the school found elevated levels of PCBs in caulking around some window sills.

PCBs, or polychlorinated biphenyls, were used in industrial and commercial products before they were banned in 1979. In some studies, the compounds have been associated with cancer and damage to the immune system.

The exposure of two electricians to toxic chemicals at a Civic office building will be investigated by ACT work safety authorities.
Meanwhile, unions described the incident as ''extremely concerning'' and raised fears other older buildings could be contaminated.

The two workers were hospitalised after being sprayed with fluid when a light fitting they were replacing exploded in the computer room on the eighth floor of Canberra House.

The fluid was contaminated with polychlorinated biphenyls, or PCBs, a toxic chemical that can cause skin rashes and, in severe cases, damage to the liver and nervous system.

Both electricians were taken to Canberra Hospital for monitoring.

The Electrical Trade Union told The Canberra Times that PCBs have not been used in light fittings for decades.

The union said it was deeply concerned by yesterday's incident, and the union's NSW-ACT assistant secretary Neville Betts demanded the owner of Canberra House search light fittings throughout the rest of the 11-storey building.

Mr Betts also said a broader investigation into other old buildings around the ACT might be necessary.

The contaminated liquid should have been identified during major campaigns to remove PCBs from buildings in the 1980s and 1990s, he said.
