A Laboratory technician who received flame burns at GovtShehbazShirf Hospital (GSSH) in a cylinder blast on Friday night died at Pak Italian Modern Burn centre on Saturday morning. The hospital sources told APP that Shakir (30) was 95 percent burnt when he was brought to health facility late Friday night. They informed he died of flame burns today morning adding that medically survival of such patients is impossible. Funeral prayer of the deceased was offered at Wahdat Colony after Magrib which was attended by relatives, friends, health deptt officials, doctors, paramedics and other colleagues.

An official source at GSSH said that Shakir caught fire first and later on a blast occurred which damaged the first floor of the hospital badly. Window panes, doors, and gates were shattered, the source said and added that debris fell on two parked cars which were totally damaged. The hospital faced a great loss, the source informed and added the lab technician was a nice chap.

MS, Dr Rao Amjad informed this news agency that the deceased was only staffer in the lab at night duty and had returned to duty after saying Isha prayer. He stated that normally he offers ‘Taravi’ too but last night he did not. The MS noted that infrastructure was vandalized with windows, doors, gates, his office 8mm table mirror besides shattering of windows and gates of pharmacies and bank in front of the hospital. Replying a question, DrAmjad said that according to Bomb Disposal Squad, Civil defence and police officials conducting inquiry into the incident, apparently gases of Air Conditioners-two split units and a standing AC installed in the lab caused the blast. To another question, he replied that an inquiry committee constituted by DC Amir Karim met today where he briefed it about the explosion. He quoted Shakir as telling hospital colleagues during his statement that when he sat on his table after returning from prayers, he caught fire suddenly from AC side.

When it was crossing Khanpur around 9am, railways staff saw smoke in one of its wagons. They stopped the train away from the platform and called Rescue 1122 service that took time to arrive. Resultantly, the chemical in the bogie was damaged.

Khanpur Station Master Muhammad Arbi told Dawn the train was stopped and the affected wagon isolated because of a populated area nearby. Immediate and vigilant action by railways staff saved the train from any major loss, he claimed.

Sources said the freight trains transported highly inflammable and dangerous chemicals without following safety protocols that could endanger human life. Besides, there were no proper arrangements to tackle any problem in case of emergency during a journey, they added.

A fire in a chemical factory in Karachi, Pakistan, on 27 August has left at least 17 workers dead. According to local and international news reporting, the fire broke out on the ground floor of the three-storey building, which had only one entrance and exit. Many of the windows – as well as the roof exit – had been blocked, leaving workers trapped on the upper floors.

Obstructed windows and roof exit hampered rescue attempts and trapped workers on the upper floors
An investigation is ongoing into the cause of the fire, while workers have called for an inquiry into the safety conditions, including how the factory was allowed to be established in what is reportedly a residential building in a congested area of the city.

The factory, located in the populated Korangi industrial area, caught fire when around 26 workers were present in the building, Korangi SSP Shah Jehan said, adding that rescue operations were on to find the other workers.
Fire brigade officials said that the incident happened when the blaze started in a drum of chemicals used to manufacture various items and spread across the factory, Geo TV reported.
Faisal Edhi, a rescue official, said 15 bodies have been taken out from the fire site.
"It is a chemical factory and apparently the fire broke out due to some short circuit but we are assisting in locating all the workers," he said.
Jehan said there were still some people trapped inside the building and might have died.

The federal government on Wednesday formed a joint investigation team (JIT) to probe the anchoring of a ship containing hazardous chemicals at Gadani ship-breaking yard.

According to details, the JIT comprising senior officials of seven different departments, including Federal Investigation Agency (FIA), Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Federal Board of Revenue (FBR), will probe into the matter in order to fix the responsibility.

The JIT will conclude its investigations within 10 day and will submit its report to the federal government. The JIT has started its investigations and sought concerned documents from the officials of the ship.

Earlier on May 26, the work on dismantling the ship containing hazardous material was stopped and Balochistan Environmental Protection Agency (BEPA) sealed the plot where it was anchored.

According to details, the ship was denied permission by India and Bangladesh due to the dangerous content inside it, which poses a serious threat to the environment, but it was allowed to enter Pakistani waters despite a clear warning by Interpol.

On April 22, Interpol had asked the Pakistan Interpol and Federal Investigative Agency (FIA) to not allow the ship into Pakistan. It contains 1,500 tonnes of mercury mixed oil. In Mumbai, the name of the ship was changed from FS Ordient to Cherish. After changing the name, the ship reached Karachi from Mumbai on April 21.

LAHORE:Eight rescuers were left injured during a firefighting operation in a chemical factory in Karol Ghatti in Gujarpura on Thursday.

Control Room of Rescue 1122 received a fire call in a chemical godown, “Ahmad Enterprise” at around 9.30am. Rescue teams rushed to the spot and launched a rescue operation. The place of over six marlas had highly inflammable material, thinners and chemicals. Printing work on wrappers of different food and other items was done in the unit. The thinners and chemicals were used for that purpose. In a short span of time, fire spread to almost all sides of the installation and engulfed the whole building.

After sensing the gravity of the situation, all the backup of Lahore Rescue 1122 was called in. At least 12 emergency vehicles and 40 rescuers took part in the operation. While the rescuers were busy in the operation, the building collapsed. As a result, eight rescuers received injuries. One of the injured was a safety officer.

They were shifted to a nearby hospital where doctors said three rescuers had received serious injuries and others minor, said a Rescue 1122 spokesperson. However, the condition of all the rescuers was out of danger. Rescue officials asserted that the building collapsed because it was in a dilapidated condition. Rescue spokesperson quoting the eye-witnesses accounts said that the fire erupted because of sparking in a nearby transformer.

On the other hand, the owner of the building disagreed with the proposition. He commented that lantern of the building fell down because it was damaged due to the heat of the fire in the chemical material.

It was at around 9:15am in the morning when the fire erupted at the multi-storey factory located in the Haroonabad area of SITE. Reacting to the information, the fire brigade immediately despatched fire tenders to the site, however, due to the severe intensity of the blaze, more fire tenders were sent to participate in the extinguishing work.

Heavy clouds of black smoke billowing out of the factory could be seen from far away. Fortunately, no death was reported and many employees, including women, trapped on the roof were rescued through a ladder.

At least eight people sustained injuries as they attempted to escape from the burning factory. They were shifted to the burns ward of the Civil Hospital, Karachi and Abbasi Shaheed Hospital.

A heavy contingent of law enforcers, including police and the Rangers, also reached the site and cordoned off the area.

As the authorities continue to suspect ammonia gas leak as the probable cause of the blast in an ice factory in New Karachi Industrial Area on Tuesday, the factory's owner has claimed that the explosion was a result of a bomb attack.
In a video statement issued on Friday, the factory owner, Moin Qadri, who had been staying in Britain for the past four months, said the explosion was a consequence of a "malicious act".
"It was a bomb blast," he insisted, suggesting that either someone threw the explosive device in the factory or it was planted on a car parked outside the factory.
Refuting earlier theories of the blast having occurred following a boiler exploding inside the factory, Qadri maintained that there were no boilers at the unit.

A case has been registered against the factory management at the New Karachi Industrial Area Police Station on behalf of the state, and murder and negligence charges have been included under sections 322, 427, 285, 286 and 337A/34.

SHO Younus Khattak said the factory management had been booked in the case as it had been learnt that the explosion could have occurred due to negligence on its part.

The owner of the factory is currently abroad and has been contacted. However, the police are investigating if he was running the factory from abroad or some contractor was incharge of the property.

Old plastic items were stored in a large quantity in the single-storey warehouse situated at Ahmad Park of Dada Nagar. As dense smoke billowed out from the premises, the workers rushed out and alerted police and Rescue 1122.

Witnesses told the media that the huge fire engulfed the entire warehouse in no time due to the presence of inflammable material and chemical inside. The owner faced a huge loss as the rescue work began late despite the authorities having been informed on time, they said.

Huge flames followed by dense smoke could be seen from a distance, according to video clips circulating on social media. Many locals tried to put off the fire, but to no avail.

After receiving information that some workers were trapped in a chemical tank, police and rescue workers from different welfare organisations arrived at the factory and took the six victims to a nearby private hospital, where doctors pronounced them dead on arrival.

Their bodies were later taken to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre, where a medico-legal officer examined them and confirmed that the six workers had suffocated. Police said that the tank of the garment factory was

full of chemicals and the workers had been trying to clean it when they lost consciousness.

They added that according to their preliminary investigation, the six workers had suffocated due to a poisonous gas because the tank contained a chemical substance.

Officials said that the tank was approximately 50 feet deep and it was half filled with chemicals, adding that one worker had initially climbed down the tank to clean it, but he fell unconscious there.

The matter was quickly contained and the affected people were immediately rushed for necessary first aid to nearby medical facilities. Patients were being released once cleared after necessary inspection and necessary first aid. No fainting spells, injuries or fatalities have been reported so far." Owing to the incident, specific areas of the plant have been "taken offline" as a precautionary measure, and further investigations to ascertain the exact cause of the incident are under way. The incident did not occur due to a boiler explosion, adding that all employees exposed to the gas were being screened.

However, Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC) Executive Director Dr Seemin Jamali said that 80 patients had been brought to the facility, at least one of whom was in critical condition. She later clarified that 70 people had been brought to the facility.

Jamali maintained that an emergency had been declared at the hospital due to the gas leak.

"Around 55 patients were discharged after being provided first aid. Around 15 patients are still at the facility," she said, adding that all those affected by the incident were facing breathing difficulties.

Dr Khan was of the view that once scientists learnt how to use each and every piece of laboratory equipment, their careers were likely to progress. He advised young scientists not to depend on assistants and laboratory staff to operate equipment.
He said that safety should be the highest priority of those who worked in laboratories. Safety precautions taken in the laboratory could actually save lives, he said, adding that they could pave the way for a safer society.
When safety procedures are not followed in laboratories, people can get hurt, Dr Khan said, adding that lab equipment and chemicals could even result in deaths if they were not handled properly. According to sources, 15 people received minor burn injuries when the fire erupted in a gas pipeline after an explosion in Metroville area. One car and two rickshaws were also burnt in the fire. However, the fire was doused after some time.
A heavy contingent of Rangers and police was present at the site of the fire. The injured were shifted to different hospitals of the city for treatment.
Fire incidents are a common occurrence in Karachi. In September this year, a fire erupted in a shoe factory which took 17 hours to cool down.
However, it was not an accident as a few workers had reportedly set fire to a chemical drum in the factory, following an altercation with the accounts department over the payment of salary, claimed Chief Fire Officer Tehseen Siddiqui.

In a statement, Piler Executive Director Karamat Ali said a number of factories and buildings caught fire in the city, some severe enough to have claimed lives of workers.

Only this past Sunday two fires were reported in the city. The first one erupted at a 14-storey building and was so severe that three floors, including two popular eateries located on the building’s ground floor, were gutted. The second was reported to have engulfed a cardboard godown located near Shafiq More. No casualties were, however, reported in the two incidents.

However, in an incident reported on Saturday, three workers died while a fourth is still stated to be in a critical condition, after they fell into the chemical tank of a fish processing factory named Inter Market Factory, in Ibrahim Hyderi.

On September 20, one labourer died while another suffered injuries when a chemical storage of a cosmetic factory exploded after a fire erupted in the factory, located on Sharea Faisal. The blast was triggered by insufficient safety measures in the factory’s basement where the storage unit was located.

“Establishment of relevant basic infrastructure under the RC initiative has led PCMA to be inducted into the international community of chemicals associations, federations, and councils, but a lot needs to be done” Abrar Ahmad, vice chairman PCMA, told a workshop organised by the association.

Highlighting the importance of responsible care, Abrar stressed that the manufacturer’s responsibility did not end at the production stage of the sensitive chemical substances like oil, gas, petrol, etc. “The producers need to adopt precautionary measures from the manufacturing to the delivery point.

This fire broke out on board of the beached LPG carrier ‘Gaz Fountain’.
The vessel’s last beneficial owner was the Greek shipping company Naftomar. Her name was changed to ‘Rain’ and the Panama flag swapped for the Comoros flag just before her last voyage – a clear indicator of the use of a cash buyer, the NGO Shipbreaking Platform claimed.
Shipping newspaper TradeWinds asked cash buyer Wirana for a comment in December, when a first fire had occurred on the same ship. Wirana, one of the world’s largest firms specialised in end-of-life deals, lists Naftomar as a client, the Platform said.

The accident occurred at yard No 60, owned by Rizwan Diwan Farooq, the former president of the Pakistan Ship Breakers’ Association. The bodies were taken to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC) where Dr Seemi Jamali, head of the emergency department, confirmed the deaths.

Police sealed the factory, which belonged to a privately-owned company, following the incident and arrested the guard (chowkidar) at the factory.

According to workers at the site, the owner of the factory had called 11 labourers today to clean the underground tank.

Six workers initially entered the tank but they soon lost consciousness due to the fumes. The workers were taken out of the tank and brought to the Jinnah hospital by rescue workers.

Five of the workers were pronounced dead at the hospital, while one was still under treatment.

Seven people, including the owner of the factory, have been charged with a crime. Only the owner of mills, according to police, is absconding.

The funeral of the deceased including five members of a family was held. Later, the affected families blocked the Indus Highway near Ranak to protest the incident. The water channel is less than two feet deep; it mainly contains chemical waste emanating from that factory. Most of the people of Paloon area of Ramak pass through this water channel on a daily basis for household chores and farming.

"Most of them died of suffocation caused by a lack of oxygen, and when these people were passing through this water channel they fell unconscious and subsequently died," Dr Jehangir, a resident who runs a clinic in the area said. According to him, about eight people were referred to the Tehsil Headquarters Hospital Purwa.

AS Sindh Governor Dr Ishratul Ebad was calming down representatives of business community who were fully resolved to observe a total shut down in Karachi to agitate failure of authorities concerned to arrest the ever-deteriorating security situation and believing in his assurances they agreed to postpone their strike call till November 30, a fire that started in a chemical factory turned the entire industrial unit into ashes resulting into huge losses to the owners and as a consequence also to the country. The incident raised many questions including the point being agitated by businessmen as most of such incidents are stated to be extortion-related with factories of those put on fire who resist demands of extortionists.

Accidental fires do break out at factories, shopping centres, offices and homes but frequency of these incidents in Karachi legitimately promotes conspiracy theories. Extortion has become a routine in the city and businessmen are openly protesting against this phenomenon and dismal performance of the Government to check the trend. It is because of utter disappointment that businesses are closing down and industries shifting to other safer areas of the country and even to other regional countries. This is not the only incident as over 300 precious lives were lost when fire engulfed a garment factory in Karachi in September, which also raised similar questions both about their linkage to extortion and poor safety measures. There were more casualties in garment factory fire as workers trapped inside could not get out because of single exist and failure of fire brigades to control fire at the earliest. Now again, fire brigades from across the city were called in but even then they could not extinguish the flames and as a result the factory was completely gutted. As for safety aspect, it can only happen in Pakistan to run businesses and industrial plants without observing even the fundamental precautionary and safety requirements. It is also rightly complained that there is lack of properly trained fire-fighting personnel and equipment and even those that should be there are often found to be not fully prepared to take up the challenge. We would, therefore, urge both the Government and management of factories and businesses to pay due attention to safety aspects and carry out necessary maintenance and upgradation as per requirements.

Such was the intensity of the fire, that it was quickly elevated to a category three and fire tenders from across the city were called in to help put the blaze out.
