Victims were instantly overwhelmed by gas, which left high concentrations of hydrogen sulfide in air

India’s National Disaster Response Force, the State Pollution Control Board and the police are all investigating the incident
As people were heading towards a milk vendor in Ludhiana, India, early in the morning of 30 April, highly toxic gas suddenly overwhelmed and killed 11 people, including two children, in the street and nearby houses. Four others were injured but have since recovered.

Preliminary investigations indicate that there was a high concentration of hydrogen sulfide in the air which smelled pungent and of rotten eggs. ‘There was no respiratory distress and the gas is suspected to contain neurotoxins,’ says Swati, a Sub Divisional Magistrate for Ludhiana, who is heading the magisterial inquiry.

The investigators from the National Disaster Response Force, the State Pollution Control Board and the Ludhiana police are investigating the exact cause and source, which remains unknown. The Punjab state police has also formed a five member special investigation team. The police have warned the pollution control officials that if they don’t help the police in finding the culprits, they too will be prosecuted.

Whether industrial chemicals were illegally dumped in the sewers is yet to be determined

‘We are checking sewage connectivity as well, but the concentration of hydrogen sulfide has to be very high to be able to kill instantly,’ says Swati, who uses a singular name. The circumstantial evidence indicates that those exposed to the gas, or mixture of gases, died almost immediately, she adds.

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — Police are investigating a hazmat situation after more than 100 plastic milk jugs filled with gasoline were found inside an abandoned home in West Philadelphia. First responders were dispatched to an abandoned home on the 100 block of North 59th Street for reports of a strong smell of gas around 8:30 p.m. Monday.

Police say upon arrival, first responders found about 154 one-gallon jugs of gasoline. You can imagine how strong the smell was coming from that house which is what tipped off the police to this potentially dangerous hazmat situation.

First responders went right inside because the house appeared to be partially burned out from a fire and completely vacant.

They say the plastic milk jugs filled with gasoline were found on the living room floor and on the steps.

“Very, very bizarre, 154 gallons and plastic milk containers. Clearly hazardous material incident, clearly unsafe in this mainly residential neighborhood,” Chief Insp. Scott Small said.

PETALUMA – Crews responded to a hazardous materials spill that took place at a milk processing facility in Petaluma early Friday morning.

Shortly after 6 a.m., firefighters were called to the Clover Stornetta facility on Lakeville Street on reports of the spill. Crews were told that a pipe had broken and about 3,000 gallons of a milk mixture made its way to a storm drain.

The mixture had made its way to the nearby Petaluma River, firefighters said.

Petaluma Public Works along with Ellis Creek Water also responded, cleaning storm drains and sampling materials that were released. Firefighters also placed a containment boom in the river.

The fire department said Friday afternoon that mitigation and cleanup of the river was initiated by a private company hired by Clover.

Officials said the California Department of Emergency Services and the state Department of Fish and Wildlife have been notified.

A dairy company behind a chemical spill that left authorities gagging over the "putrid, sour and rancid" smell of rotten cheese in a Melbourne creek has been convicted and fined.

The Fresh Cheese Co was today handed an $8,060 fine in the County Court of Victoria after pleading guilty to permitting an environmental hazard at Yuroke Creek in Broadmeadows close to four years ago.

The court heard that the alarm was raised by members of the public who noticed a "nauseating" smell that resembled sewage or rotting milk while walking on Ripplebrook Drive near the creek.

The reports prompted the Environment Protection Authority (EPA) to send an officer who uncovered "thick white sludge" near the culvert of Yuroke Creek.

The court today heard the odour from the liquid was so powerful that Melbourne Water staff dispatched to the site to clean it up were left gagging.

Judge David Brookes said the Fresh Cheese Company had accepted responsibility for the spill.

SPOKANE, WA - A milk product is being withdrawn from the reach of students. This comes after a high school student in Spokane opened her chocolate milk and realized she was drinking chemicals.

The company Darigold apologizes for the mistake and says the chemicals pose no health risks.

As a precaution, the company is conducting a voluntary withdraw of the product, which is the fat free chocolate milk half pint with the "Best By" date of February 6.

Since yesterday, the company estimates that as many as 16,000 cartons could contain the chemicals, which are...

"A mixture of trace amounts of food grade sanitizer and water," said Sarah Taydas, Director of Communications for Darigold. "It's important to know that this poses no health risks to humans. There actually was no milk in the carton the student had opened."

Taydas clarified that specific product was produced in the Spokane Darigold plant, and that this has never occurred before. The company's top priority continues to be food safety and customer health.

--------------------------

SPOKANE, WA - Spokane Public Schools has confirmed they are pulling all chocolate milk with a "Best By" date of February 6 from all of their schools due to possible contamination.

A Shadle Park High School student noticed a "bleach" taste to the milk on Tuesday, and after an investigation, the decision was made to pull the milk and stop shipment of the rest of the order to other schools.
