A Ph.D candidate at UNH who is facing criminal charges after an apparent hazmat situation near campus over the weekend was trying to follow a YouTube video that specifically warned viewers not to repeat the experiment, according to Durham police.

Police said the suspect, Emad Mustafa, 29, called authorities himself on Saturday, saying he may have been exposed to a toxic chemical.

According to new court documents, Mustafa told officers he believed he had made a chemical called dimethyl mercury inside his Oyster River home.

He told officers that mixing the chemical caused a flash-burn, creating smoke and toxic vapor.

He was taken to the hospital and treated, but that process launched a multi-department investigation.

Mustafa admitted that another tenant may have also been exposed to the chemicals.

Town officials in Durham said Mustafa identified the chemicals as mercury, sodium and dimethyl sulfate.

LAKE, MI – A federal hazmat team is investigating a mercury poison package that spilled at a Northern Michigan post office on Monday, WPBN/WGTU reports.

The U.S. Postal Service has confirmed that a substance that leaked out of a package on Monday at the Lake Post Office was mercury, 9&10 News reports. The post office in Clare County has been closed since workers noticed the leaky package while sorting mail. The nearby Lake George Post Office is also closed since the package passed through that location.

People who were exposed to the poison have been medically evaluated and cleared, WPBN/WGTU reports.

The package originated in the Detroit area and investigators are working to discover where it was headed and why, 9&10 reports.

It is illegal to send mercury through the mail. Exposure can cause tremors, mood swings, muscle weakness, headaches and nervous system damage, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Cases of high exposure can result in kidney effects, respiratory failure and death.

USPS is working to reroute mail that would have gone through this post office, WPBN/WGTU reports.

MARTINEZ, Calif. - The ongoing mercury spill discovered days ago in the Martinez Amtrak parking lot continued to disrupt surrounding areas Wednesday as crews worked to remove every spec of the toxic chemical.

Mercury is one of the basic building blocks of chemistry and if uncontained, can cause sickness and in some cases death.

The mercury spill, which is now on its third day, has expanded into a full-blown hazmat emergency, closing some streets. Though the chemical is widely used in electrical switches, paints, and soaps, it is highly toxic on the loose.

A garbage truck inadvertently spread the hazardous waste, Contra Costa County health officials said Tuesday night. Some neighbors and bus and train riders said the widened scope of contamination is unnerving.

"I don't know if it travels or whatever. You know, I don't know if you have to touch it or the wind blows it because this is very close to me," said resident Lorraine White.

Earlier Wednesday, White said she boarded a bus from the very location now cordoned off and being treated for mercury contamination, one of the most highly toxic, non-radioactive elements.

LEAD — Hazardous material crews continue to clean mercury spilled at Lead-Deadwood High School on Dec. 12.

Additionally, seven homes of students were screened and all tested positive for mercury. Two of the homes required some clothing and book bags removed. One more home will have materials that need to be removed.

Three homes had minimal levels and no action was required. An additional home requires additional screening, according to a report on the matter filed by the Environmental Protection Agency.

The level of mercury at the home of the student who brought the mercury to school was at hazardous levels. The report indicated that, “an unknown amount of elemental mercury from three bottles had spilled in a bedroom,” and that multiple beads of mercury ranging in size from “pinhead to dime” were found.

The mercury came from the belongings of a relative of the student’s who worked at a mine. Elemental mercury is used in various mining operations, including gold extraction. That student brought the mercury to school to show fellow students.

At the high school, mercury was spilled in the chemistry laboratory. It was also found in the art room. Initial air readings at the school indicated elevated levels.

A federal judge on Tuesday approved the settlement calling for Mallinckrodt U.S. LLC to pay for remediation of mercury released by the now defunct HoltraChem plant in Orrington.

The plant discharged six to 12 metric tons of mercury from 1967 until the early 1970s, according to a previous court-ordered study. Environmental groups have longed pushed for the remediation of the river.

“It’s long past time for Mallinckrodt to make it right, and this ruling will go a long way toward restoring the Penobscot, so people can go back to fishing, eating lobster, and enjoying this river," Jesse Graham, co-director of Maine People’s Alliance, said in a statement.

Firefighters responded to reports of a potentially hazardous substance yesterday about 12.30pm.

Otago Area Assistant Commander Craig Geddes said yesterday volunteer crews from Cromwell set up a cordon and ventilated the residential property where the mercury was found.

A hazardous materials unit was being deployed from Dunedin today to assess the spillage and remove the contaminated material safely.

There was no risk to the public, Geddes said.

Fenz national hazardous substances advisor, Dr Trudy Geoghegan, said the main risk from a mercury spill was the vapour, but it can also be absorbed through the skin.

Several people who were in the home were hospitalized, including two children, on August 9, after exhibiting signs of mercury poisoning.

Initial tests showed mercury levels at 600 times the acceptable limit for human exposure in the house.

A young child found a jar of mercury in the house and began playing with it, according to DEEP. A teenager then spotted the child playing with it and cleaned it up, but didn't initially tell the parents about the mercury.

Vast amounts of chemical waste were probably dumped into a river on the Polish-German border, Poland's prime minister said Friday, killing tons of fish and creating an ecological disaster that could take years to clean up.

Authorities said 150 Polish troops have been deployed to the 522-mile-long Oder River, which flows through Poland, Germany and the Czech Republic, to launch a cleanup operation. The chemical spill was likely intentional, Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki said on a podcast Friday.

"It is likely that enormous amounts of chemical waste have been dumped into the Oder River, and this was done with full awareness of the risks and consequences," Morawiecki said. "We will not let this matter go, we will not rest until the guilty are severely punished."

German water samples from the region revealed elevated levels of mercury, according to local media, but authorities are still investigating the source of the spill. Scientists have speculated that there might be other causes for the mass fish deaths, including climate change. The Polish troops set up a barrier along the river to catch the dead fish, and warned local residents not to bathe in the water or eat fish caught in contaminated parts of the river.

Using mercury as a propellant for manoeuvring satellites in Earth’s orbit has been outlawed by a UN resolution before it ever made it into orbit. The ban follows interest in mercury-thruster technologies, which could have seen the toxic heavy element fall back to Earth from the upper atmosphere, posing significant environmental and health risks.

Ion drives that propel small satellites traditionally use xenon and krypton because they have suitably high atomic masses for ion propulsion systems. However, their scarcity means alternatives are needed if demand is to be met by the tens of thousands of mini-satellites that are expected to be launched in the next decade, and beyond, as companies such as SpaceX and Amazon populate low Earth orbit with satellite ‘megaconstellations’ for broadband communications.

Mercury’s appeal is that it is cheap and it can be stored and ionised easily to achieve excellent thrust. Nasa had previously used mercury as an experimental propellant in the first ion thruster demonstration in space in 1964. However, by the 1970s Nasa and industry had largely rejected it as a propellent because of its toxicity. Mercury bioaccumulates in the food chain and as a neurotoxin it can cause vision loss, developmental disorders in children and cut IQ.

But in 2018, Kevin Bell at the Public Employees for Environmental Responsibility (Peer), a US environmental organisation, was contacted by a space industry whistleblower. The insider told Bell that California-based Apollo Fusion had developed a new mercury-based thruster and was beginning to promote it to satellite manufacturers.

‘The whistleblower had contacted at least two other environmental organisations before us who had not responded or taken them seriously, as well as at least one state regulatory agency,’ says Bell. ‘I suppose they were just working their way through the environmental phone book and I happened to be the one that believed them.’

In his first ever case involving space law, Bell soon learned that regulations were lacking when it came to sending things into orbit on board satellites unless it involved weapons. Peer raised the issue with the US Federal Communications Commission (FCC), which has regulatory authority to approve or deny proposed communication satellite networks. ‘But the FCC has continued to deny that there might be any environmental harm caused by approving networks of thousands of satellites.’

Mercury was found last month in a sink at an Oahu elementary school, not far from another elementary school where elevated levels of beryllium were detected during widespread testing of the Navy's water system in Honolulu.

The service announced Friday that a sample taken March 16 at Pearl Harbor Kai Elementary School contained mercury levels nearly twice the limit set by the Safe Drinking Water Act.

The sample was taken from an indoor sink located in an administrative building "not regularly used by students," according to the Navy, and was isolated to the sink.

News of the mercury finding was followed Saturday by an announcement from the Navy that "no more than" 30 gallons of fuel and water had spilled at the Red Hill Fuel complex. The accidental release occurred while workers were removing water from the fuel tanks, a process known as "dewatering."

Navy personnel halted the process, and the Hawaii Department of Health was called in to monitor the cleanup, according to a service press release.

ROCKPORT — A Google search about what looked like a blob of liquid silver on the floor lead a resident to call 911 to request a hazardous material crew.

A HAZMAT team was called to a Phillips Avenue home Sunday evening to tend to a mercury spill.

The spill came from an antique mirror that the homeowner’s son, John Heinzmann Jr., said was moved in the home on Saturday. The next day, he noticed a strange blob of liquid where the mirror once stood. After a quick Google search, Heinzmann learned the liquid was mercury and he needed to call 911.

“I didn’t even know they used mercury to make mirrors back in the day,” he said. “The mirror is around 110 years old.”

Most 16th century mirrors were produced using a liquid mercury amalgam, according to the Northeast Waste Management Officials’ Association. “The mercury is actually contained in the reflective layer behind the glass portion of the mirror,” the association says on its website. “Mirror makers stopped using mercury in the 1840s, instead switching to silver nitrate, which is still used today.”

Besides antique mirrors , some other household items that may contain mercury are thermometers, barometers, clock pendulums, organs and “mercury glass” vases.

But a new analysis of what’s inside the forest’s leaves and birds’ feathers tells a different story: The same canopy that supports some of the richest biodiversity on the planet is also sucking up alarming levels of toxic mercury, according to a study published on Friday.

The mercury is released into the air by miners searching for gold along nearby riverbanks. They use mercury to separate the precious metal from surrounding sediment and then burn it off. Carried in the air, particles catch on leaves like dust and are washed onto the forest floor by rain. Other particles are sucked into the leaves’ tissue. From there, mercury appears to have transferred up the food web to songbirds, which showed levels of mercury two to 12 times as high as those in comparable areas farther from mining activity.

“The patterns were so much more stark and so much more devastating than we expected to find,” said Jacqueline Gerson, a biogeochemist at the University of California Berkeley who led the research as a Ph.D. student at Duke. The study was published in the journal Nature Communications.

The 9/11 terrorist attack on the World Trade Center in New York resulted in the loss of 2,753 people in the Twin Towers and surrounding area. After the attack, more than 100,000 responders and recovery workers from every U.S. state – along with some 400,000 residents and other workers around ground zero – were exposed to a toxic cloud of dust that fell as a ghostly, thick layer of ash and then hung in the air for more than three months.

The World Trade Center dust plume, or WTC dust, consisted of a dangerous mixture of cement dust and particles, asbestos and a class of chemicals called persistent organic pollutants. These include cancer-causing dioxins and polyaromatic hydrocarbons, or PAHs, which are byproducts of fuel combustion.

The dust also contained heavy metals that are known to be poisonous to the human body and brain, such as lead – used in the manufacturing of flexible electrical cables – and mercury, which is found in float valves, switches and fluorescent lamps. The dust also contained cadmium, a carcinogen toxic to the kidneys that is used in the manufacturing of electric batteries and pigments for paints.

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) has acknowledged the “risk” that e-commerce brings to Filipinos when it comes to the online trade of regulated hazardous substances.

“While e-commerce is a significant driver of our economy and provides convenience to millions of consumers, there [is] also [a] certain degree of risk to the population in general,” DENR Usec. Juan Miguel Cuna said over the weekend.

Rreferring to the online selling of regulated chemicals or chemical products, Cuna said: “With these products being highly accessible to anybody who has access to online trading sites, risk of human exposure or environmental contamination is highly possible, especially when sellers or suppliers do not have permits from government regulatory agencies.”

Cuna made the remarks last Friday, April 16 during a virtual interagency meeting involving environmental, health and trade regulators, e-commerce executive, and chemical safety advocates. The topic of the meeting was the supposed unfitting use of online shopping platforms to sell regulated chemicals such as cyanide and mercury.

A presentation by the EcoWaste Coalition illustrated how third-party dealers are taking advantage of digital commerce to sell regulated chemicals in blatant disregard of existing regulatory controls.

The hazmat team was called to the restaurant around 3 p.m.

"It seems consistently that the source at all of instances is either a broken thermometer or broken thermostat," said Vancouver Fire spokesperson Jonathan Gormick.

"Mercury is very, very toxic and the vapours are very, very toxic, so we have to take this extremely seriously," said Gormick, who expected crews to take at least a couple hours to completely clean up the tiny droplets of metal.

Vancouver Fire and Rescue Services said park rangers were opening up the washroom when they found a substance that looked like mercury on the ground.

The hazardous materials team responded around 8:45 a.m and confirmed the substance was mercury, an element that even in small amounts may cause toxic effects and serious health problems for humans if contact occurs.

"The mercury was kind of spread around, it was in fine droplets," said assistant chief of operations Trevor Connelly, who noted the toxic substance was spread around the floor and in the toilets.

"It was a tedious process for the hazmat team to clean it up, but after an hour or so they did get it all cleaned up and the washroom was opened."

The incident at the New Hampshire Office of Licensing and Board Administration required an evacuation of the building but did not result in any injuries, Concord Fire Chief Guy Newbery said. The state office is located on the third floor of the old city stable building.

Newbery said the first firefighters on scene learned that a box holding bottles of assorted chemicals – including products containing mercury and arsenic – had been damaged during transport. As a result of the damage, some chemicals mixed.

“Fire Department crews worked to identify the exact products involved and determine if there were re-activity issues,” Newbery said in a statement. “The chemicals were identified and re-packaged for proper disposal.”

With gold prices currently at a historical high, miners like those in the Peruvian Amazon, many of whom come from poor Andean communities, are attracted to the sector as a means of improving their lives.

What goes unseen are the toxic emissions from the rudimentary refining taking place within the many gold shops. Shop workers use mercury to separate the gold from other minerals and then burn off the mercury to yield pure gold. Depending on how open the shops are or how equipment is vented, “when they heat the gold up, the pollution travels down the street,” says Adam Kiefer, a chemistry professor at Mercer University.

HOUSTON — Investigators are trying to learn more about why a 19-year-old man broke into a Houston laboratory and stole at least one vial of mercury and several checks on Friday night.

In court, documents revealed Christopher Melder allegedly stole 11 pounds of mercury and personal and business checks.

Houston fire Chief Sam Pena later explained that the lab had multiple vials of mercury, and that each one could contain about 11 to 15 pounds of mercury in its liquid metal form. It is unclear exactly how many Melder may have stolen.

Those documents also show Melder tried to sell the mercury at a Walmart and nearby gas station.

Investigators determined through questioning that there was "no nefarious intent" behind the theft and subsequent spilling of the mercury. Investigators said Melder "thought it would be fun to play with."

Houston police are investigating the origins of a small amount of mercury found Sunday near three businesses off the West Sam Houston Tollway, where firefighters decontaminated up to 60 people as a precaution, officials said.

Exposure to mercury, a heavy silvery metal that maintains a liquid form at normal temperatures, can be dangerous when ingested or inhaled. However, officials with the Houston Health Department said that the mercury found Sunday posed an “extremely low” risk to the public, because trace amounts were found on the ground outside.

A pregnant woman was the only person hospitalized during the cleanup, according to Houston Fire Chief Sam Peña. He added there was no risk to anyone outside the contaminated area.

“Anybody who was processed through the decontamination corridor did so as a precaution,” Peña said. “If they had it on their shoes or the lower part of their pants, we did that as a precaution before we led people out of the zones where we discovered the material.”

An unidentified “concerned citizen” who works in the chemical industry reported a white silvery substance on the ground at 11:15 a.m. in the 10700 block of Westview near the parkway. Firefighters responded and found the chemical outside the nearby Walmart, Sonic Drive-In and a Shell gas station.

It’s unclear how long the mercury had been on the ground or how it got there, said Houston Police Executive Assistant Chief Matt Slinkard. He said the police investigation will focus on whether the exposure was intentional or accidental.

Slinkard said investigators are following up on two potential leads: a burglary at a business or warehouse near the exposure site, and a man at a county hospital who on Saturday night or Sunday morning reported mercury exposure. If the exposure does prove to be intentional, the FBI will head up the criminal investigation, Slinkard said.

OSWEGO — A half-cup mercury spill found Friday morning on the basement floor of the city’s westside water treatment plant has been cleaned up, Oswego Fire Department Chief Randall Griffin said Friday evening.

The spill was discovered by maintenance workers during a routine inspection of the area. Two decades-old, out of commission, mercury-filled meters (possibly from the 1960s) had been leaned up against the basement wall, and one or both had leaked. Each of the meters can contain up to 12 pounds of mercury, according to Griffin, and most of it still remained in them. Both were removed along with the spill.

The Oswego Fire Department, in conjunction with the Syracuse Hazardous Materials Team, make up a regional hazmat team that joined forces around 10:30 Friday morning for the cleanup. Four members of the team were sent into the basement and cleaned the area using both a hand-held suction device and a powder that, when mixed with the mercury, congeals it into a solid. The cleanup was completed by 1 p.m.

While four members of the team went inside to address the spill, other members remained outside to decontaminate the cleaners, their suits, the soles of their feet, and the equipment used. The water used to rinse everything and everyone off was contained and pumped off into a containment vessel that will be tested by an outside environmental company. Any contaminated hazmat suits will be disposed of

Crews from the Christchurch City, Spreydon and Woolston stations attended the incident. They were wearing chemical splash suits and breathing apparatus.

Mr Wilson said it was the first time in his career he has had to deal with mercury. The crews took advice from experts in Melbourne about how to deal with the spill.

"Once it was cleaned up, we put sulphur powder down which reduce's the mercury's volatility," Mr Wilson said.

"Then that is left for a couple hours and then it was swept up.

"It pays to take great care with any element, especially breathing in its vapours," he said.

Mercury poisoning can affect the nervous system, leading to neurological symptoms such as nervousness or anxiety, irritability or mood changes, numbness, memory problems, depression and physical tremors.

Areas surrounding the blaze-gutted Rang Dong warehouse are safe now, Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Tran Hong Ha said Thursday.
The Rang Dong warehouse fire last month was "a chemical incident that led to an environmental incident," he said. "Pollution following the fire is mainly limited to inside the warehouse."

Authorities have decontaminated polluted areas, Ha said, adding that materials left behind in the warehouse must be dealt with properly.

Professor Jozef Pacyna of the AGH University of Science and Technology in Poland said a map detailing the areas affected by the mercury released from the fire is needed, as it might take several months or years before the element could become toxic.

About 15.2-27.2 kilograms of mercury had been released into the environment following the fire, the Vietnam Environment Administration had said last Sunday.

27.2 kilograms of mercury by itself would not immediately have an impact on human health, Pacyna told VnExpress. The mercury released in the fire was inorganic, and it is its organic form that is toxic, he said, adding that the element could become toxic after it got absorbed in the soil and water and contaminate food sources like seafood.

A Vietnamese light bulb maker admitted to using liquid mercury, a danger to human health at high temperatures, and its director issued a public apology after fire destroyed a Hanoi factory that released the toxic metal that forced hundreds of people to evacuate schools and homes.

According to local Vietnamese media on September 8, the admission came during a meeting between a representative of the Rang Dong Light Bulb Company and the General Department of Environment on August 31, just one day after the company Company told local media it had stopped using liquid mercury in favor of safer mercury-zinc-bismuth amalgam in 2016.

Mercury vaporizes at a temperature of 674 degrees Fahrenheit (356 degrees Celsius). In vapor form, it can dissolve into the air and disperse in harmful concentrations, according to an expert quoted by the Lao Dong Online Newspaper days after the fire.

Rang Dong told the environment department that it used liquid mercury in the amount of 20 mg per bulb for some 480,000 fluorescent light bulbs, along with amalgam in 1.6 million compact bulbs, as well as other toxic chemicals.

Shortly after the fire in Hanoi’s Ha Dinh ward, the ward’s People’s Committee issued a notice saying that the people should not consume vegetables and fruit, poultry, fish or pigs raised within one kilometer of the factory for a period of 21 days. The notice also advised residents not to use local water sources in the same area.

A Shrewsbury man has been sued for illegally demolishing a backyard shed containing dynamite, causing a hazardous fire and explosion in the fall of 2016, Attorney General Maura Healey announced Wednesday.

On Oct. 24, 2016, Edgar Muntz Jr. directed P&M Asphalt Services Inc. of Sutton to demolish an old wooden shed at 393 Oak St. and to remove the construction and demolition debris from the property. Mr. Muntz, who lives at 10 Grove Meadow Lane, owned the 393 Oak St. property as trustee of 393 Oak Street Realty Trust.

Inside the shed were about 550 glass jars and other containers holding hazardous materials, including dynamite, hydrofluoric acid, mercury, sodium cyanide, arsenic, chloroform, toluene, and chromium, according to a complaint filed by the attorney general’s office in Suffolk Superior Court.

During demolition the shed caught fire, releasing hazardous materials to the air and soil, according to the attorney general’s office. The fumes caused P&M workers and a neighbor to suffer chest, throat, and respiratory discomfort, the lawsuit says.

After a neighbor alerted authorities to the explosion, the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection, along with other state and local agencies, took remedial action to secure the site and clean up the hazardous materials.

P&M workers previously had knocked down a house on the property. They backfilled the cellar hole of the demolished house using soil mixed with debris from the shed. That debris included jugs and plastic containers, some labeled “Poison,” that held bright multicolored powders, some of which were spilling out of cracked and broken containers, the lawsuit says.

Seven days after a mercury spill initially deemed “very small” by school district officials, a Belmont Cragin elementary remains shut down at least through the end of the week as city and federal officials continue cleanup efforts that have left many parents on edge.

A day after the March 26 spill at Marvin Camras Elementary, Chicago Public Schools officials called the closure precautionary, due to a small thermometer breaking inside a science lab in the school at 3000 N. Mango Ave.

CPS says they’ve since learned it was actually a barometer that spilled 5 tablespoons of the toxic metal.

“While this is a larger release than our initial estimate, it has not changed the type of response needed to ensure students are safe,” according to a district statement.

“The health and safety of our students and staff is the district’s highest priority, and thankfully no students at Camras have required medical treatment,” CPS spokesman Michael Passman said in an email. “CPS is working with its partners at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the Chicago Department of Public Health to ensure the safety of Camras students and staff, and classes will resume at the school once remediation efforts are complete and the building is cleared for student use by the EPA and Chicago Department of Public Health.”

EPA workers remained at the school through the weekend, and the school was still closed Wednesday.

A staff member found a “very small mercury spill” inside a classroom and immediately called 911, Chicago Fire Dept. Cmdr. Frank Velez said.

“They closed the room right away and called us,” Velez said. “It was contained by the staff. Nobody touched it or anything.”

Shortly after 4:50 p.m., fire crews searched the building with meters and fully contained the toxin, according to Velez. He was not sure of the source of the spilled mercury.

The Chicago Department of Public Health will be involved in additional mitigation efforts, Velez said.

An apartment building in Fall River is uninhabitable and two people have been hospitalized due to a hazmat situation involving mercury, according to fire officials.

Fall River District Fire Chief Michael Clarke said a 51-year-old man who lives at 108 Hamlet St. accidentally contaminated the building with mercury when he was melting down what he thought were old silver fillings to try and make some money.

"His grandfather used to be a dentist and he had some old fillings, and he though he could melt them down," Clarke said. "He thought they were silver, but it turned out to be mercury."

Clarke said the resident initially melted down the fillings on Jan. 25 and went to the hospital three days later. During that time, doctors could not figure out what was wrong with him.

Meanwhile, three pets in the building, a dog and two cats, all died over the course of a couple of weeks, according to Clarke.

PROVIDENCE — Firefighters equipped with a decontamination unit were called to Rhode Island Hospital on Saturday afternoon and stayed well into the evening as doctors and nurses dealt with an incident of suspected mercury exposure, authorities said.

Providence firefighters went to the hospital at 4:15 p.m., where a man was being treated in intensive care, and where they were joined by hazardous materials specialists from the North Providence Fire Department and the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management, said Providence fire’s acting deputy assistant chief, William Kenyon.

The man, he said, had come from the scene of an incident in Fall River. A 17-year-old girl had also come to the hospital after being decontaminated by Fall River firefighters, Kenyon said.

The suspected exposure involving the man took place while he was working with mercury, according to Kenyon, who said no further details were available.

Firefighters did not detect significant levels of mercury, he said.

Rhode Island Hospital spokesman David Levesque confirmed by email that a patient was treated for exposure to “a hazardous material” and that testing determined that the hospital was “well below” safety limits set by the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration.

Lt. John Cassidy of the FDNY’s HAZMAT unit testified in Queens Criminal Court Wednesday that when he tested the air inside the Jamaica Estates home in 2015, he found mercury levels to be over 60 micrograms-per-meter-cubed in every room in the house.

The Centers for Disease Control has advised that anything over one microgram-per-meter cubed is unsafe.

After finding “multiple small beads” of mercury inside the unit’s intake vent, Cassidy advised the family to stay away from the house until the Department of Health gave them clearance to return.

The Environmental Protection Agency told NBC 7 the man was trying to extract gold from ore and other metals using mercury and illegally disposed the material.
Michael Starr, 49, left a short-term rental house in Pacific Beach in disarray in early October, according to prosecutors.
When clean-up crews came in, they noticed awful smells coming from the oven and called the police.
While bomb and arson investigators found no threat, law enforcement found signs of mercury having been illegally disposed down drains and in trash chutes.
Prosecutors said Starr also contaminated a house on La Jolla Farms Road with mercury.
Starr cooperated and led law enforcement to Golden Triangle Self Storage in Sorrento Valley, where he was storing mercury and other chemicals.

JAMES CITY CO., Va. - James City County emergency personnel responded to a hazmat situation in the 4600 block of Noland Boulevard in Lightfoot Thursday afternoon.

A call reporting an unknown substance that had apparently leaked from a container came in at 2:35 p.m.

Authorities say the substance spilled inside a U.S. Postal Service vehicle. The postal service employee received medical evaluation and required only minimal care.

There is no indication of any immediate concern at this time, according to emergency personnel.

A firefighter was taken to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital for heat-related problems. He is said to be in stable condition.

The James City County Fire and Police Departments, along with the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, Virginia Department of Emergency Management and the York County Department of Fire and Life Safety also responded to the scene. The Department of Fire and Life Safety assisted in identifying the substance.

The Liberty Crossings neighborhood was blocked off for hours before residents were allowed back into their homes.

In a statement, a spokeswoman with the U.S. Postal Service said the spilled substance was identified as mercury and that the mail that was inside the vehicle will not be delivered until it has been deemed safe to do so:

BOURNE, Mass. - Bourne firefighters and a hazardous materials team are on the scene of a mercury spill at a condo complex Tuesday night.

First responders were called around 6 p.m. to 9 Ships Way after a vial of mercury spilled.
The unit was immediately evacuated and secured.

Bourne Fire requested a Tier 1 hazmat response. Bourne Fire is part of Department of Fire Services Hazmat District #1, which consists of 110 cities and towns. Each department has firefighters who are trained hazmat technicians. A Tier 1 response calls for 5 firefighters from surrounding cities and towns to respond to the scene. Bourne Fire Chief Norman Sylvester, a hazmat technician, is the incident commander.

The hazmat team is trying to collect as much of the mercury as possible.

When spilled, mercury breaks apart in beads instead of clumping in a puddle. These beads can be very tiny, making them hard to find. Mercury also evaporates at room temperature and its fumes do not have a smell, which makes it difficult to detect without sensors or other specialized instruments.

Bourne Fire Deputy Joseph Carrara told Boston 25 News the mercury spilled on a hardwood floor, which is harder to clean up than a tile or linoleum surface. The spaces in the hardwood floors make it harder to remove all of the mercury.

Mercury can turn into poisonous vapors that can have dangerous health effects, especially for children and pregnant women.

Crews responded to the fire around 2:30 p.m. to an alley between D and Orange avenues near Fourth Street.

According to NBC7San Diego, the fire burned a collection of at least 100 thermometers containing mercury that were being store in the garage.

Coronado Fire Capt. Brandon Ihde declined to specify what the hazardous material was, but he said the material was isolated to an external detached garage.

When firefighters put water on the fire, a little of the material got into the alley, he said. A hazmat crew isolated it and was working Monday evening to clean it up.
