Eighteen people were injured, 10 of them children, by an explosion at a science outreach event in Girona, Spain on 30 September. The accident – which involved the release of nitrogen gas and water vapour – happened during one of the demonstrations on European Research Night, co-organised by the local university. All those injured had been discharged from hospital three days later.

The event has a huge tradition in Girona, according to Marcel Swart, theoretical chemist and director of the Institute of Computational Chemistry and Catalysis (IQCC). ‘It’s wonderful to see the excitement of the kids,’ he says. ‘Since I started working [here] in 2006 … this has been organised every year, with great success.’ Among other activities, this year children could use virtual reality headsets to step inside enzymes and navigate their active sites.

As part of the evening’s entertainment, Dani Jiménez, a science populariser, was performing one of his most popular demonstrations – a controlled combination of liquid nitrogen, boiling water and ping pong balls. When mixed together inside a barrel, the evolving gas propels the ping pong balls into the air, creating a colourful display that is so popular it has become the main attraction of the event in promotional materials and on social media. However, on this occasion, an unexpected explosion shocked the audience.

On videos shared on Twitter of the incident, it appears that the explosion occurred due to the failure of a metallic strap that joined two barrels – supposedly to create a more spectacular display. Jiménez seems to give the go-ahead despite warnings from his colleague, in charge of handling the liquid nitrogen. ‘Well, it’s fine, just hold it … hold it tight and we’ll start,’ Jiménez can be heard saying in one of the videos of the accident posted on Twitter.

GIRONA, SPAIN: A horrifying video shows the moment when a barrel of liquid nitrogen exploded during a school science experiment in Spain which caused 15 people including 9 children to be hospitalized. The blast from the botched experiment left the victims with severe burns which took place at the House of Culture in Girona, Spain. They were later treated at Placa de l'Hospital, according to Daily Mail.

The footage shows the crowd consisting mainly of students and their parents, waiting eagerly to see the experiment, some even took their phones out to record the event. Deni Jaminez, the professor behind the experiment, and his assistant were most affected by the explosion and were also rushed to Trueta hospital for emergency treatment. One of the injured is said to be 'between a serious and less serious' condition in hospital. Girona's mayor Marta Madrenas said the event was organized by the local university. The crowd was hyped by the organizers when they played 'Bruno Mars' Uptown Funk and encouraged them to look in the barrels.

U.S. Labor Secretary Marty Walsh announced citations and fines by the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration on Friday.

“Make no mistake, this was a very preventable tragedy,” Walsh told reporters.

U.S. & World

He said the penalties imposed in the case were “relatively large but that is not enough.” He said many companies simply write off OSHA fines as the “cost of doing business” and called on Congress to increase them.

“These employers were putting profit over safety,” Walsh said.

The Mount Airy Volunteer Fire Company says units were dispatched just before 11:00 AM for a vehicle collision involving an overturned stake body truck carrying a mix of compressed gases, liquid nitrogen and dry ice. Arriving crews found gas cylinders strewn across Route 27, along with a leak from a liquid tank and dry ice scattered all over. At that time, Route 27 and I-70 was closed to traffic.

The Haz Mat teams from both Carroll and Frederick Counties were dispatched to the scene. After personnel were equipped and a recon was done, the teams determined that several gas cylinders and the liquid tank were compromised in various ways. The materials involved were Oxygen, Acetylene, Nitrogen, Liquid Nitrogen, and dry ice. The air was monitored to make sure there were no explosive mixtures and ignition devices were removed.

The federal investigative board looking into last month’s incident at a poultry processing plant in Gainesville has found that issues on a conveyor appear linked to the deadly chemical leak.

Six workers were killed at the Foundation Food Group on Jan. 28. The plant uses liquid nitrogen to flash-freeze chicken, and an “inadvertent release” happened on one of the plant’s five production lines. About a dozen people were injured and taken to a hospital, and 130 people were evacuated.

The U.S. Chemical Safety and Hazard Investigation Board released the following new details Sunday about the incident:

— The plant had been experiencing unresolved operational issues on the chicken conveyor that appear to have resulted in the accidental release of liquid nitrogen in the flash-freezing bath.

— The Chemical Safety Board has information that Line No. 4 was shut down the morning of the incident. The shutdown was due to operational issues on the conveyor line.

— Foundation Food Group maintenance personnel reported the computerized measuring system indicated a low liquid level in the immersion bath used to flash-freeze the chicken products.

— The liquid nitrogen units were manufactured and installed by Messer and are leased to the Foundation Food Group.

— The Foundation Food Group performs routine maintenance on the Messer-owned equipment.

It's a pretty common chemical found in food processing plants and, while not poisonous to humans, it can kill you.
When it expands from a liquid into a gaseous state, it can displace the oxygen in your lungs and suffocate you.

At least three of those injured at the Foundation Food Group plant in Gainesville were reported in critical condition.

Poultry plants rely on refrigeration systems that can include liquid nitrogen. Firefighters, the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration and the state fire marshal were investigating the cause of the leak.

“It was a leak of unknown cause that has occurred in the system here,” Hall County Fire Department Division Chief Zach Brackett said. “We still have a lot of information we’re trying to gather from the scene.”

"There was an explosion in my chest," Stacey Wagers, 45, told NBC News. "I couldn't speak. I felt like I was dying."

In a lawsuit filed against the hotel on Friday, Wagers alleges that she became gravely ill "within seconds" after drinking water which contained liquid nitrogen.

The Don Cesar Hotel in St. Pete Beach, Fla.Google Maps
Wagers and her friend had just finished dinner at the Maritana Grille, on the premises of the Don CeSar Hotel, on Nov. 11, 2018, when the women saw their waiter pour a liquid on a nearby table's dessert that made it "smoke." Wagers' friend told the waiter the smoke effect looked cool, and the waiter then poured the liquid nitrogen into the women's glasses of water.

"Of course I didn’t think it was dangerous at all," Wagers said. "He had just poured it on a dessert."

The women drank from these glasses and Wagers became ill immediately, according to the lawsuit. An ambulance was called and Wagers was taken to the ICU, where she remained for days.

Because of the liquid nitrogen, Wagers had to have surgery to remove her gall bladder. Parts of her stomach were also removed where tissue had been burned by the extremely cold temperature of the chemical. Wagers has lost over 25 pounds from the incident and will have lifelong digestion issues, according to her attorney, Adam Brum.

Usually, the crew gathers as much information from the 911 Center as possible before getting to the scene. Then, they find a representative of the company responsible for the chemicals to learn what they're dealing with.

"We work hand in hand with them," Fire Chief Guy Santone said, "We do what we're trained, in they do what they're trained in, and we can rectify that situation almost 100% of the time."

However, emergency crews were unable to stop the chemical leak Monday night because they were unable to locate the turn-off valve for the leaking tank.

"The end result was we had to let it bleed out there was 8,500 pounds of liquid nitrogen that we had to let go out into the atmosphere," Santone said. When asked about the environmental effects the leak could have, he said it would be minimal to none.

Emergency crews were called just after 8 p.m. and learned a liquid nitrogen tank ruptured in Modern Industries.

They shut down 12th St. from Cherry to Liberty St. because the haze is causing visibility problems for drivers.

HAZMAT is on standby right now while crew members work to stop the leak, according to Jeff Carroll, deputy chief for the Erie Fire Department.

A tanker truck may need to be called to the scene if the leak cannot be stopped, Carroll told Erie News Now.

Depending on how long it takes to stop the leak, it could be a while before road is reopened, Carroll said.

In the meantime, he said the gas is not harmful or poisonous to the body and does not pose a fire risk.

BARTLETT, Ill. — A teacher at a suburban high school was suspended Friday after a student was injured in a science experiment.

The science teacher at Bartlett High School was reportedly showing students an experiment with liquid nitrogen. The student was lying on the floor as part of the demonstration.

“[A small amount] was meant to be poured on his chest,” senior Casper Tokarz said. But "he poured all of it on him, and it instantly just burned him.”

Sources tell WGN News the student was severely burned in his groin area after the teacher poured the liquid nitrogen on him. The teacher has been with the school a long time and has done this experiment in the past, sources said.

The district said the teacher involved was put on paid administrative leave pending an investigation.

“The fire department just kind of came up to our floor and said, ‘You have to leave the building,’ ” said Park Sloper Joe Thomas. “We keep compressed cylinders of nitrogen around so maybe where it comes out it could have leaked, or erupted.”

Liquid nitrogen can silently kill people by sucking out all of the oxygen in the room, according to one of New York’s Bravest.

“The main hazard is it can in a confined space displace oxygen,” said Deputy Chief Regan.

So firefighters in head-to-toe gear rushed up the stairs to check out the tank after transporting it from the classroom to the roof. They didn’t detect a leak, but were still waiting on its manufacturer a little before 4 pm to come haul it away since it’s better to be safe than sorry, said Regan.

Science teacher-YouTuber Jacob Strickling was guest on the show “Studio 10” earlier this week, where he mixed liquid nitrogen into cola bottles, causing them to blast off like miniature rockets when he turned them upside down.

One of the show’s hosts, Natarsha Belling, held a bottle as Strickling filled it. However, she seemed uncertain how to hold it.

“I’ve done it twice ― you should’ve been watching,” Strickling said.

“I wasn’t watching,” Belling replied.

That’s when the segment almost took a tragic turn. Belling turned the bottle to the side instead of upside down, and it shot right toward her face.

A liquid nitrogen cylinder had been filled earlier on Thursday and the release valve had been activated.

A large amount of liquid nitrogen spilled from one of the university's medical buildings.

They were unsure of the quantity of the spill and were seeking advice on how to best contain it, the spokesman said.

The valve was still leaking as of 11pm.

"It's just pouring out and spilling onto the road," a witness said earlier.

What is this strange chemical container at the corner of East Cherry Street and John Q. Hammons Parkway? — Rachael Garrett, of Springfield

It's a metal canister that contains liquid nitrogen. That's what it says on the container. The container is connected to a line that goes up the pole.

Because the container is connected to a power pole or telephone pole, I called Joel Alexander, spokesman for City Utilities.

He said the canister does not belong to City Utilities, but he thought it might belong to AT&T Inc. because elsewhere in the nation, phone companies are using liquid nitrogen to maintain phone lines.

It is owned by AT&T Inc.

"As part of an ongoing cable repair, a bottle system was put in place to keep the damaged cable dry," said Katie Nagus via email. She is an AT&T spokeswoman based in St. Louis. "We are working to replace the damaged cable and the bottle will be removed once that work is complete."

A couple of days after taking the photos, I drove by again to make sure the canister was still there before I wrote about it.

The chemical leak at the Augusta sperm bank, Xytex, killed a sheriff's deputy last month. 11Alive's Faith Abubey has uncovered additional details that make the case even more heartbreaking.

According to the city of Augusta, the building where the deadly chemical leak happened wasn't cleared for safety codes before the company started using it -- which leaves you wondering if this tragic incident could have been avoided in the first place.

Almost two months after a liquid nitrogen leak killed Sergeant Greg Meagher, several investigations continue into the deadly liquid nitrogen leak at the Xytex headquarters in Augusta.

But 11Alive News has learned new details that could spell problems for the sperm bank. State officials confirm there were signs of a chemical problem earlier in the day on February 5 before the leak that killed Sgt. Meagher.

They said the equipment's safety alert system was sending messages prior to the burglar alarm call that sent deputies to the scene. In another detail, 11Alive News was able to confirm that the Xytex building was never cleared by city officials for occupancy.

Three fire trucks and a Hazmat unit were sent to the leak, coming from a freight train which had stopped at the Pukekohe Station at 10.15pm.

A fire service spokesman said all trains were halted going both ways, due to the incident.

"It seems to be leaking from a gas cylinder of liquid nitrogen in the train.

"We're on standby until we can get someone there to assess it."

He said the train hadn't been evacuated, to his knowledge. It was not clear how many people were on board.

Liquid nitrogen, the gas in its cooled form, is used in a myriad of ways as a type of coolant.

It creates clouds of vapour - similar to dry ice - when exposed to air.

In medicine, it's used freeze off warts and pre-cancerous cells, while restaurants use it to instantly freeze food and beverages.

However, liquid nitrogen is dangerous and potentially deadly. It can cause frostbite or cryogenic burns if handled improperly, and can lead to asphyxiation in confined spaces.

Crews were called to Rockwell Automation Company inside 2 Executive Drive about 7 p.m., and found a leaking tank of liquid nitrogen, according to a Fire Chief Gary Ryan.

There were no reported injuries.

Ryan said workers were evacuated from the area around the leaking tank.

"We're trying to stabilize the incident now," Ryan said about 9 p.m.

Nitrogen is not toxic, but it can quickly cause frostbite burns if it contacts skin in its liquid form, and in its gaseous form it can displace oxygen and cause asphyxiation in enclosed spaces, according to the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration.

Diethyl ether makes a pretty convincing flame that spans the width of the pool. But it's not match for the liquid nitrogen, which spreads across the surface like the mists of a doomed lake and chokes the life out of the fire. It's not that the stuff is cold, it's that the nitrogen covers the surface of the pool and smothers the flames by cutting off the supply of oxygen. The gas creates a pretty damn cool mini-tornado at the end, too.

Watch through the rest of the video as the Backyard Scientist tosses liquid nitrogen directly into the pool. You know, just to see what happens.

Witnesses say it was amazing no one was seriously hurt, even workers who were standing nearby.

Employees with the Huntsville gas company said they were testing liquid nitrogen when the hydrogen tank exploded at approximately 2:30 p.m. Emergency crews found debris flooded the parking lot. In fact, shrapnel landed all over the neighborhood.

Capt. Frank McKenzie with Huntsville Fire & Rescue said two workers nearby were hurt but not seriously. He said they were walking around after the explosion but still went to the hospital to be checked out. He said it was "really lucky" no one else in the area was hit by falling debris.

Employees at National Copper can agree with that. The copper company is located approximately 150 yards down the street, but that distance didn't stop a piece of metal from tearing through the front wall and crashing into the middle of the work floor. No one was hurt but they were all shocked at the explosion even before they saw the debris crash into the building.

The Ministry of Labour and University of Windsor are both investigating after a 200-litre cauldron of liquid nitrogen - a hazardous material - was transported along Wyandotte Street West by three students.

Candy Donaldson, the university's hazardous materials technician, and a member of CUPE Local 1393 which is currently on strike, received a call from pickets outside the Centre for Engineering Innovation in the early afternoon Friday.

"They knew something was wrong," said Donaldson, who was told that three engineering students had emerged from the building with a hazardous materials tank on wheels and were wheeling it down the street, overseen by engineering department head Andrzej Sobiesiak.

"You didn't have to be a scientist to know something was weird."

Donaldson rushed to the scene in time to see the tank being wheeled along Wyandotte to the university's main liquid nitrogen filling tank at Essex Hall.

WIN00768540_1_1She watched as they filled up the tank, and then turned around and headed back to the CEI, about two blocks and two intersections to the east. They also crossed against a red light, Donaldson said.

"I approached the department head and said 'Do you realize what you're doing is illegal?,'" said Donaldson, who called and notified the ministries of labour, environment and transportation.

"And he said (head of health and safety) Leigh Harold said it was OK, and we said OK, and they continued to drag it down Wyandotte."

The transportation of liquid nitrogen is regulated under many federal and provincial acts, and requires that it be moved in large quantities by a vehicle with hazardous goods markings, or "placarding."

There was a vapor cloud of liquid nitrogen filling the air around the building for the incoming Keurig Headquarters last night.
...
Emergency crews, led by Captain Scott Carpenter, assessed the situation and determined that the cloud was liquid nitrogen, which Yetman said is a cryogenic liquid with a temperature of -375 degrees.

Yetman said the vapor cloud made approximately a 50-foot circle around the tank. He added that tanks that hold gases such as liquid nitrogen have a safety release if the pressure builds up too much. He said fire fighters believe that was the case here.

"That's what the tanks are designed to do, but at this time we think the valve froze open."

Yetman said that during the release of liquid nitrogen the public was not in danger.

"It didn't affect Route 3," he said. "There was no hazard to the public. It's an inert gas and will displace oxygen. So there was that and the frostbite hazard."

He added that there were fire fighters stationed on both sides of the building to monitor the cloud to ensure winds didn't push it to populated areas.

"We waited it out for a while," he said. "Keurig officials were on scene and they notified their gas supplier. They brought in a technician and we were able to go in and shut the system down. The last units cleared around midnight."

A building at the Western General Hospital in Edinburgh was emptied after a leaking container of dry ice was found.

The alarm was raised when the milk bottle-sized container was found in a fridge. It appears the lid was not securely fastened, allowing the smoke-like gas to escape from the bottle. The building was cleared for around an hour while firefighters investigated.

A spokesman for Lothian and Borders Fire and Rescue Service said: “We were called to a report of a chemical incident. When we arrived, we found a bottle of liquid nitrogen which a member of staff had put in a fridge.

“The bottle was inspected and appeared to be in a safe condition, so it was handed back to hospital staff.”

Fire and emergency crews shut down an on-ramp to Interstate 65 South in Nashville on Tuesday morning after they found several steaming canisters with a foul odor. HAZMAT officials were able to determine that the canisters contained bull semen, which had fallen off a Greyhound bus, according to WKRN.

Officials traced the containers to Greyhound after finding bus tickets on the ground. The bus did not know it lost its load and had continued on. Authorities called Greyhound, who, after speaking with the driver the bus, determined the canisters were filled with straws of frozen sperm packed in liquid nitrogen.

The load originated in Columbus, Ohio and was en route to a breeding facility in Laredo, Texas. Canisters, such as the ones spilled across the interstate typically carry between 300 and 400 straws, each containing one-milliliter of sperm.

A corroded tanker truck potentially carrying liquid nitrogen caused officials to evacuate the I-5 Federal Way weigh station Wednesday afternoon.

The truck pulled into the weigh station around noon and state patrol inspectors spotted corrosion on the exterior of the truck.

They immediately ordered an evacuation of the immediate area and called in hazardous materials crews.

Troopers said the plaque on the tanker denoted it was carrying liquid nitrogen, but they are still trying to determine how much, if any, of the substance is in the truck.

NITROGEN LEAK: Hazmat teams clean up liquid nitrogen leak in Millcreek - KSTU

MILLCREEK, Salt Lake County, Utah — Shortly after 8 a.m. Sunday, Hazmat crews responded to a liquid nitrogen leak at the Tandem Labs building at 1121 East 3900 South in Millcreek.

A 6000-gallon tank of the substance sprung a leak, causing fire authorities to close down parts of 1100 East, although authorities say it isn't a safety issue.

"We're just gonna keep people out of the area until we get this remedied," said Capt. Cliff Burningham with the Unified Fire Authority.

The nitrogen lowers oxygen levels in the laboratory, so crews are taking all necessary precautions.

"You'll notice that the firefighters are in their full turnout gear and also their self contained breathing apparattuses," said Capt. Burningham. "That protects their respiratory drive so they can be in that environment where there's low oxygen concentrations."

The leak was first notified by Unified Fire Authority officers who were out in the area today.

"They arrived, the first arriving unit, and found the steam and vapor coming from the storage doors of a laboratory," said Capt. Burningham.

Officials don't know what caused the leak and plan to let the liquid nitrogen supplier handle the situation, saying they are best-equiped.
