The Clayton Fire Department was dispatched to investigate the issue and determined there had been an accidental release of kerosene from a private business in the Main Street area; and with the rain from Ian, the fuel leak may have extended past the US Highway 70 Business corridor.

The business, where the leak originated, was notified and immediately contacted a hazmat company around 12 p.m. to assess and clean up the area. The hazmat company has been working around the clock to mitigate the effects of the release, according to Town of Clayton Communications Director Nathanael Shelton.

GLENVILLE — Mohawk Asphalt Emulsions is facing pressure from authorities after a second explosion in less than a year rocked the plant Thursday.

In response to the blast, the company — part of The Gorman Group — announced Thursday afternoon that it would no longer manufacture a kerosene solution that was part of the early morning blast and fire.

Firefighters on Thursday night were not available to disclose the cause of the explosion.

But company officials believe a heater operating inside the plant caused a cleaning solution containing the kerosene to overheat and catch fire, according to a statement released by company attorney Frank C. O'Connor III.

"To prevent this in the future, Gorman will no longer manufacture the kerosene solution at this facility," O'Connor's statement read.

The 6:30 a.m. explosion and fire destroyed a fuel tank at Mohawk Asphalt. Nobody was injured, but it was the second major incident at the Freemans Bridge Road plant since last October.

A tanker truck exploded at Mohawk Asphalt on Oct. 17 and severely hurt two men who later died of their injuries. A third man also was hurt in the explosion.

Firefighters in Barnwell says they responded to an apartment that had bed bugs. The apartment had already been professionally treated, but the tenants' boyfriend created a concoction of chemicals including kerosene, a bug bomb, and other household chemicals to treat the infestation.

The fumes were so toxic they seeped to the apartment next door, causing a second apartment to be evacuated.

Firefighters say the second apartment should be inhabitable in the next couple of days, but the apartment they were originally called to will need 'significant and thorough treatment.'

They’d like to know who spilled the fuel, how it happened and whether the mess was an accident or intentional.

The bulk of the spill was on a 40-yard stretch on M And O Station Road in a residential neighborhood. It happened sometime around 4 p.m.

Police and fire trucks blocked the road there for about five hours while the St. Clair County Hazardous Materials response team cleaned up the mess.

The Environmental Protection Agency released an analysis of frack water on Friday, based on data that drillers supplied to the website FracFocus. The EPA’s report is just one part of the agency’s long awaited fracking study, which will assess the impacts of hydraulic fracturing on drinking water supplies. The full report is due out this spring.

The EPA researchers say less than one percent of frack fluid in their analysis of 39,000 wells contained additives, while water made up 88 percent of the fluid, and sand, or quartz, made up ten percent. The agency identified 692 separate frack water ingredients. Maximum concentrations of these chemicals were usually below 2 percent of the total mass, while half of the chemicals were below 0.3 percent of mass. EPA science advisor Tom Burke told reporters on a press call that the chemical additives and volumes of water varied greatly from well to well. Water usage for each fracked well ranged from 35,000 gallons to 7.2 million gallons.

“While these maximum concentrations [of chemical additives] are low percentages of the overall fracturing fluid,” said Burke, “more than half the wells had water volumes greater than 1.5 million gallons. So a small percentage may mean hundreds or thousands of gallons of chemicals could be transported to, and present on, the well pad prior to mixing on the fracking fluid. Remember one percent of a million gallons is a large number — 10,000 gallons.”

The three top chemicals used in the frack fluid were hydrochloric acid, methanol, and hydro-treated light petroleum distillates. Hydrochloric acid is used to keep the well casings free of mineral build-ups, while methanol is used to increase viscosity. Petroleum distillates are refined products like diesel, kerosene, or fuel oil, and are used to make the fluid “slick,” or soapy, and thereby reduce friction.

Just after 12:10 a.m., firefighters responded to a tanker truck that was leaking kerosene between the Silent Wings Museum and AeroCare.
When crews arrived on the scene, they determined more than 100 gallons of Jet-A fuel had been leaked during a transfer from a holding tank to a fuel truck.

The fuel flowed downhill outside of the airport perimeter to North Cedar Ave. Crews contained the spill using sand before it reached a nearby playa lake. Portions of North Cedar Ave are still blocked off as clean up operations are ongoing.

BRATTLEBORO — A fire that injured two people and displaced seven Friday was accidental, according to a news release from the Brattleboro Fire Department.
Firefighters responded to a reported kerosene heater explosion at 27 Brattle St. at about 5:30 p.m.
Two of the building's occupants were injured in the fire. One was treated for smoke inhalation and the other for minor burns.
The second-floor front apartment of the four-unit building received extensive heat and smoke damage, according to the news release. That apartment's resident was alerted to the fire by a smoke detector, fire officials said.
A joint investigation by the Brattleboro fire and police departments this weekend revealed a strong possibility that the wrong type of fuel was accidentally used in the heater, the news release said.
Brattleboro fire officials reminded area residents to ensure they have working smoke and carbon monoxide detectors in their homes, and to be cautious when using portable heaters of any type. The fire department also reminded residents to properly vent fuel-burning heaters.

Edmond Fire Maj. Kelly Lewis said shortly before 9 a.m. one of the machines at NOV Tuboscope, 3600 S. Kelly, near the 33rd Street-Kelly intersection, became clogged and maintenance workers were attempting to clear the obstruction.

A pipe became disconnected and the polymer, a type of powdery substance, was released, creating a dust cloud, Lewis said. The cloud reached an industrial space heater that runs on kerosene and had an open flame, he said.

Four employees suffered burns from the fire caused by the explosion, Lewis said. One has been released from the Integris Baptist Medical Center in Oklahoma City, he said. Two others with less severe burns were admitted to the hospital’s Paul Silverstein Burn Center. An employee with more severe burns is in the intensive care unit, Lewis said.
