The cause of the fire is suspected to be an electrical fault.

Firefighters from the Uasin Gishu county rushed to the school which is less than three kilometres away and battled the fire for more than three hours.

Ainabkoi police boss Leonard Mate said they were still investigating the incident.

The school administration and the police said no student or staff were injured in the incident.

"Everyone is safe but the lab has been completely destroyed," Matete said.

There were explosions during the inferno because of chemicals stored in the lab.

Countries from around the world agreed March 2 to negotiate a global treaty aimed at controlling plastic, from production to disposal.
“Plastic pollution has grown into an epidemic,” says Espen Barth Eide, Norway’s minister for climate and the environment. But with the backing for a treaty, from 175 countries, “we are officially on track for a cure,” he says in a statement. Eide presided at a meeting in Nairobi of the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA), the UN’s top decision-making body on environmental issues, where governments endorsed creation of the plastic pact.
The planned accord, expected to be completed by the end of 2024, is to cover the lifecycle of plastics, fostering design of reusable and recyclable products and materials, according to the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). The agreement also would call for international collaboration to help developing countries access technology as well as promote scientific and technical cooperation.
The global chemical industry, producers of the world’s plastic, backs the plan for a treaty. In a statement, the International Council of Chemical Associations says UNEA’s mandate for the accord “provides governments with the flexibility to identify binding and voluntary measures across the full lifecycle of plastics, while recognizing there is no single approach to solving this global challenge.

The UN Environment Assembly, which will begin in Nairobi on 28 February, will be working to develop a legally binding international treaty on plastic pollution. This comes as one study claims that the production of chemicals and plastics has already outpaced our ability to assess and monitor them, and in doing so threatens critical systems that we depend on.

The researchers behind the new study conclude that chemical pollution has crossed a planetary boundary. The idea of planetary boundaries which define a ‘safe operating space’ for humanity was proposed more than a decade ago. Nine were identified – including climate, biodiversity and ocean acidification. Breaching those thresholds would cause large scale or irreversible environmental change.

Unlike climate change, no-one’s established a quantitative boundary for pollutants like plastics – now labelled novel entities – as many of them did not previously exist on Earth.

‘We started but we’ve always stumbled – it’s like a mind-bending exercise, trying to think how would you assess 350,000 chemicals for their potential to disturb the Earth’s systems. How would you count that? Now we’ve realised you can’t have a number,’ says Cynthia de Wit at the department of environmental science and analytical chemistry at Stockholm University.

The international team of researchers that includes de Wit have instead proposed using a series of control variables, which could be combined to make a judgement. ‘Without control variables, you have no way of trying to push for policy or solutions,’ she suggests.

Hundreds of mourners on Saturday attended the burial of three members of one family burnt after a gas cylinder exploded in their Rarieda village home in Siaya County.

The three- Caroline Gwara (40), her 18-year-old daughter and son, John Migael, (three) were part of Calvin Omondi's five-member family that had gathered home at night two weeks ago when a gas cylinder exploded, setting the house on fire.

Migael died at the scene, while Caroline, her husband and their two daughters were pulled out alive and taken to hospital. Caroline and one of the girls later died, leaving Mr Omondi and the other daughter fighting for their lives in hospital.

On Saturday, Omondi and his daughter did not witness the burial of his wife and two children because they were still admitted to hospital

Omondi’s mother Jenipher Adongo, who says earlier that fateful day she spent a lot of the time with her grandchildren, sat in front of the three coffins, lost in grief. “The boy was nicknamed Gift because he was born 13 years after the third born, a girl. He was beguiling,” she said of her grandson Migael. She eulogised Caroline, her daughter-in-law, as a kind woman.

Wilson Opiyo, a relative, said the village had never seen "something like this". Police had earlier attributed the incident to leakage from the gas cylinder.

Mr Odero Ojwang’, a Chemistry teacher at Usenge High School, said gas cylinders stored under high temperatures can explode. “When there is some leakage, the gas combines with all air molecules and causes fire,” said Mr Ojwang’, adding that when a jiko is used near a gas cylinder, chances of the latter exploding are high.

He said: “Most of the cooking gas involved in explosion always lacks Ethyl Mercaptan, a chemical that gives a smell that enables detection of leakage by users.”

Meeting as the United Nations Environment Assembly in Nairobi, the officials set an international goal of a pollution-free planet. They did not establish a time frame for reaching this lofty objective, calling it “a long-term endeavor.”
“We have put the fight against pollution high on the global political agenda,” says Erik Solheim, head of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).
One activity that must be improved to eliminate pollution is use of commercial chemicals, the assembly determined.
“We believe that it is both inexcusable and preventable that tens of thousands of chemicals are used in everyday objects and applied in the field without proper testing, labelling or tracking,” the environment ministers say in a declaration. “Far too many communities” lack information about hazardous substances they use or are exposed to, or they lack the capacity to manage those hazards safely, the declaration says.
Separately, the assembly called for action to curb the amount of plastic in the world’s oceans as global plastic production and use continues to increase. The assembly called for UNEP to create a global experts group to study options for reducing marine plastic litter, including microplastics. To this end, the assembly encouraged countries to establish policies that extend producers’ responsibility for the fate of their products.

A fire yesterday burned down a physics laboratory at Maranda High School in Siaya county. Students said the 3am Sunday fire started when students were asleep. The students were awoken by smoke that engulfed the building.

The students and their teachers did not salavage anything from the laboratory. This is the fifth fire incident at the school since June last year. Efforts to seek comments from the principal Boaz Owino was futile.

n the last two years there have been at least 30 major pipeline explosions and leaks of oil and gas, and possibly hundreds of smaller ones. Many have led to injuries and deaths but there has been nothing on the scale of the Nairobi explosion since 2006, when around 270 people died after a vandalised oil pipeline exploded in the Abule Egba district of Lagos, in Nigeria.

The explosions mostly take place in poor countries because international oil and gas companies often fail to bury or protect their pipelines as they would have to do by law in rich countries. The easily accessible pipes, which often run through slums and informal settlements in burgeoning cities, are tempting to desperately poor communities, who often have no electricity and must rely on oil lamps for lighting and power.

Groups of youths drill into the pipes or sabotage the pumping stations. Many have set up rudimentary refineries, where the stolen crude oil is heated up to make "bush" diesel good enough to run generators and older cars. Many of these DIY refineries explode, and fires sometimes destroy large areas.

NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) — A leaking gasoline pipeline in Kenya's capital exploded on Monday, turning part of a slum into an inferno in which at least 61 people were killed and more than 100 hurt.
Flames leapt out from the pipeline in a radius of some 300 yards (meters), setting shacks ablaze and incinerating scores of people. Reporters later saw clusters of charred bodies and blackened bones at the site. Some burned bodies floated in a nearby river filled with sewage. Homes had been built right up to the pipeline, the residents said.
"I've lost count of the number of bodies," said Wilfred Mbithi, the policeman in charge of operations in Nairobi as he stood at the scene. "Many had dived into the river trying to put out their flames."
Provincial Commissioner Njoroge Ndirangu said at least 61 bodies have been recovered so far, but said the death toll from the blast will rise.
