A chemical spill at a Washington industrial site sent one person to the hospital. The Washington City Fire Department was called to the Perdue plant on Washington’s west side to deal with a spill.

Washington Fire Chief Steve Walden says that fire fighters arrived to find a 250 gallon container leaking.

“We are not certain on how the spill happened,” said Walden. “We washed the leaking chemical down a drain at the site. That drain goes to Perdue’s own waste water treatment plant. That water will be completely treated before it goes into the city’s system.”

Authorities identified the chemical as peracetic acid.

“It is a feed grade chemical that is used to kill bacteria,” said Walden. “In the air it is also an irritant.”

A recent study claims local officials and environmental agencies downplayed hazardous air conditions during the Winston Weaver fertilizer plant fire — and more should have been done to alert the public. Some of the highest levels of fine particulate matter during the incident were measured at Wake Forest University.

In the first days of the fire at the Winston Weaver Company, the focus was on the amount of ammonium nitrate at the site and on preventing an explosion. Emergency officials let the fire burn to keep first responders out of harm's way. A heavy blanket of smoke could be seen throughout the city as the smoldering fire released a mix of pollutants into the air.

The Environmental Protection Agency set up monitors around the perimeter of the fire several hours after it began. During a press conference on February 2, 2022, Winston-Salem Fire Chief Trey Mayo touched on air quality and made recommendations that included avoiding exercising outside.

“The products of combustion we still classify those generally as just irritants. We would expect people to be exposed to them,” said Mayo.

But the Blue Ridge Environmental Defense League says air quality was much worse than what was shared with the public.

NEW HAVEN, Conn. — A school in New Haven was evacuated Thursday morning after a reported hazmat situation that sent 12 students and two teachers to the hospital as a precaution, officials said.
The New Haven Fire Department was called to Wexler Grant School on Foote Street around 10:30 a.m. Thursday on a report that something in the air was making people sick and their eyes water. Other symptoms included scratchy throats.
The airborne irritant was later determined to be a defensive spray - such as mace - that was found in a cubby inside one classroom. School officials said the classroom in question was being vented and cleaned.

The Walmart store in Kahului was evacuated on Wednesday morning when fumes from a floor sealing product released a respiratory irritant into the air, Maui fire officials said.

Firefighters responded to the incident at 8:13 a.m.

According to department reports, a contractor was spraying a sealing product on the floor within the store, but it released volatile organic compounds during off-gassing as it dried.

Fire officials say the liquid is an irritant when in contact with exposed skin, and the fumes created a respiratory irritant.

One female patient was transported for respiratory difficulty; and one male patient was treated at the scene for skin irritation after coming in contact with the product.

Firefighters with the departmentʻs Rescue 10 and Hazmat 10 units, as well as a Battalion Chief responded to the incident and remained on scene to ensure fumes were reduced to safe levels before the store reopened.

AUBURN (CBS13) — A deadly hazardous materials incident closed down the Foresthill Bridge near Auburn for several hours Thursday afternoon.

The bridge began reopening shortly after 5 p.m. A chemical was found inside a vehicle that was parked near the bridge, the Placer County Sheriff’s Office said.

Deputies found a warning letter on the car but are not disclosing the details if it. Hazmat crews later found two chemicals mixed together to make hydrogen sulfide in the car.

Additionally, Placer County firefighters broke the window to find a person dead inside.

“In smaller doses, that gas can be a throat irritant, coughing, nausea, vomiting, headaches, but at high concentrations and since the vehicle was closed, it can cause death,” said Battalion Chief Matthew Rea of the Placer County Fire Department.

When workers in the Bank of America branch at 4000 SE 82nd Avenue of Roses started feeling a bit sick on Tuesday morning, September 28, Portland Fire & Rescue (PF&R) crews were summoned to investigate. It was 10:25 a.m., shortly after the bank opened.
Out of an abundance of caution, PF&R routinely sends its Hazardous Materials Response Team (HazMat) to investigate any incident where people are suspected of being in contact with chemicals or other substances that might make people ill – but, typically, no hazards are located.
However, this time, the health threat was real.

....
As the incident unfolded, a total of nine PF&R units had gathered at the bank, including PF&R HazMat Unit 7 from the Mill Park Station.
“Portland Fire’s HazMat team responded to the location, and took all precautions,” Foster said. “The crews found that, when employees had opened a bag of money, they started feeling the irritation.

Wearing breathing apparatus, gloves, and a full turnout suit, this firefighter uses an electronic “sniffer” to detect chemicals on contaminated cash.

Firefighters prepare to enter the bank building to search for remaining chemical irritants.
“The HazMat team found that the money had trace amounts of a chemical irritant,” Foster informed.
HazMat determined that the amount of chemical on the money and items that came in contact with it, was in small enough amounts that the bank could handle the cleanup by itself, Foster added. Just what that chemical irritant was – has not yet been disclosed.

All residents were asked to go inside and turn off the A/C system immediately, officials advised.

As of 10:40 p.m, the La Porte Fire Department continued to detect an odor in certain areas of the city.
“At this time, we are still recommending that residents remain sheltered in place,” officials wrote via Facebook. “We are working with Harris County Pollution Control, but do not have confirmation of any detections in the city at this time.”
City officials said they have received multiple calls regarding an odor and irritant in the air.
The shelter-in-place order is in place during the investigation.
Harris County Pollution Control is in the area to conduct air monitoring and to assist in the identification of the source of the odor.

The hazardous-material incident happened on Friday afternoon at 4:30 p.m. at the Target in Harker Heights located on East Central Texas Expressway.

The Harker Heights Fire and EMS responded to a call about an “irritant in the store,” according to Harker Heights Fire Marshal Brad Alley. Officials said one person was treated for respiratory irritation, but did not have to be transported to the hospital.

Alley said Monday that he did not know what the irritant inside of the store was.

Target’s media relations department told the Herald the chemical did come from inside the building, but was not from the building itself. They said the building was immediately evacuated and ventilated through its HVAC system.

According to Sacramento Fire, someone called for help just before 8:15 p.m. near 1600 Helena Avenue.
When officials arrived they found a 55-gallon drum at a roofing company which was, as fire officials describe it, "admitting a vapor that is an irritant to the respiratory system."
Officials believe the substance in the drum to be some sort of solvent. Sacramento Fire says the hazmat team is on scene mitigating the situation and disposing of the drum.

Seattle Fire was called after 10 a.m. Wednesday, when a “pepper-spray-like substance” was released under the door of a 10th-floor apartment in the 100 block of Melrose Avenue East, said department spokesperson Kristin Tinsley.

The two women were affected by the chemical irritant, she said, but were able to get to a window and breathe while waiting for the Fire Department’s HAZMAT crew.

The women, both adult and one elderly, had some respiratory distress, Tinsley said. They were evaluated by medics but declined further medical attention.

Tinsley said the other residents of the 10th floor were told to shelter in place while the substance was cleaned.

The warehouse in Cockeysville was evacuated, and up to 20 people were evaluated for minor injuries, according to the Baltimore County Fire Department.

At 8:40 a.m., Baltimore County hazmat crews were called to a warehouse in the 10200 block of Beaver Dam Road that is part of the Baltimore County Central Acceptance facility.

Workers had been separating recyclables that had been collected curbside when a can ruptured as it was moving on a conveyor belt inside the 100,000-square-foot building, according to officials.

The building was evacuated, and Baltimore County hazmat crews ventilated the building.

Between 15 and 20 employees were evaluated by emergency medical personnel for exposure to the chemical substance, later determined to be a nonhazardous irritant that authorities described as a "can of dog training spray."

It smells, but the air that carried smoke and debris from the Androscoggin Mill explosion on Wednesday is safe to breathe, Jay Fire and Rescue Chief Mike Booker said Thursday.

Town workers will soon start collecting pulp debris scattered by the explosion, which occurred in a digester that turns softwood into pulp to make specialty paper. A significant part of the building was destroyed, but no injuries were reported. Chemically treated pulp fell from the sky as far as a mile away from the mill.

The Androscoggin Mill is a key cog in Maine’s long-embattled paper industry, which saw five mills close between 2014 and 2016 but has leveled off since then in a stronger economy. With 500 workers it is Franklin County’s second-largest employer and makes up roughly half of Jay’s property tax base at a valuation of more than $325 million.

“The air quality is safe. There is a nuisance smell, but that is not toxic to your health,” Jay said in a statement posted on the fire department’s Facebook page. “The chemical with the pulp is classified as a mild irritant, will dissolve over time, and is known as a good fertilizer.”

Booker discussed the situation with Maine Department of Environmental Protection and mill officials prior to releasing the statement.

Kate McKnelly expects to finish up her PhD this summer, but she isn’t allowed to set foot in her laboratory at the University of California, Irvine. That’s because she is effectively allergic to the building.

She had been handling peptide coupling agents for years when in 2018 she started to develop a severe and potentially life-threatening reaction to three of them: HATU, HBTU, and HCTU. While HATU and HBTU were already known to cause allergic reactions, McKnelly’s case appears to be the first to involve HCTU as an allergy sensitizer.

“If you look at a chemical label and it says ‘Flammable,’ then you know to be really careful. Or if it’s a carcinogen, then you know it can cause cancer. You have a good grasp on what those words mean,” McKnelly says. “Sensitizer is a more nebulous term.”

Sensitizers are chemicals with the potential to become allergens. It’s hard to predict which chemicals will be sensitizers, who is likely to be vulnerable to them, and how much exposure will induce a reaction. Consequently, working safely in a lab means handling known sensitizers and chemically similar compounds cautiously to minimize exposure.

COVINGTON, Ky. (WKRC) - The Covington Fire Department responded to the release of a "chemical irritant" on Sunday afternoon, prompting local businesses and residents to shelter in place.

The call to the fire department came in shortly before 1 p.m. with the caller stating there was "white smoke" in the area.

The release of the chemical happened as a result of an apparent equipment failure at the Interplastic Corporation plant on Latonia Ave. in Covington. Officials believe that a pressure release valve failed or became stuck.

According to Covington Fire Chief Mark Pierce, no one was injured by the vapor cloud that was coming from the plant, blowing east, and dissipating.

Fire officials say that the chemical is a lung irritant.

The Covington Fire Department advised residents within 1,000 feet of the plant to shelter in place, meaning go inside, shut your doors and windows, and turn off any ventilation drawing air in from the outside.

AMESBURY -- When the owner of a former carriage factory on Chestnut Street opened a “booby-trapped” old safe Friday afternoon, fire officials say a vial of what appeared to be CS gas – similar to tear gas – rolled out onto the floor.

The vial didn’t break, but the building owner quickly called 911, prompting a hazmat response by Amesbury firefighters and evacuation of the building at 6 Chestnut St.

Fire Chief Kenneth E. Berkenbush said Friday in a press release that when the new owner of the building opened one of the doors of the World War II-era safe, “a booby trap was triggered, causing a vial with suspected CS gas inside to fall to the ground.” The chief said CS gas is an irritant that is not generally poisonous.

Berkenbush his firefighters responded just after 4 p.m. to what he termed a Tier 1 response, the lowest tier out of five. There was no danger to the public, he added. Amesbury police roped off Chestnut and Washington streets and a hazmat team from the Massachusetts State Police also responded to the building, which is the former Biddle and Smart carriage factory.

A minor chemical spill at the Lafayette Utilities System North Water Plant last week led to an evacuation order, an investigation and 14 people seeking medical treatment, according to multiple reports.

Hydrated lime was released as a cloud or fine dust from the plant, polluting the air in the area and covering surrounding buildings. The spill prompted officials at the plant, Lafayette Fire Department, Lafayette Police Department and Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality to evacuate the surrounding area. The evacuation order was lifted on Feb. 4.

Associate professor of chemistry Eric Taylor, Ph.D., warned of the potential dangers of breathing the substance.

“It’s not what you call a particularly serious dangerous chemical, but it’s not something you’d want to play with either,” Taylor said. “It’s an irritant. It’s a caustic material, so you don’t want to breathe it in or put it on your skin because it would damage your skin and injure you….LUS did get people out of the area rather quickly, which is to their credit. You don’t want them to be there to be injured by it, and you don’t want people in the way while they are trying to clean it up.”

The widely-seen plume was the result of coal tar pitch "vapours" released from a processing unit undergoing maintenance at Ruetgers Canada just before 3 p.m., said Gary Wheeler, spokesperson for Ontario's Ministry of Environment and Climate Change.

The industrial processor at 725 Strathearne Ave. N. uses coal tar (a byproduct of steelmaking also known as a toxic ingredient in Randle Reef harbour pollution) as a chemical raw material in manufacturing.

District EMS superintendent Dave Thompson said six employees suffered "respiratory injuries" as a result of exposure to a "rather large plume" of gas that contained an inhalable "irritant."

Thompson said the patients were "decontaminated" before being examined by paramedics, and in some cases transported to local hospitals. He said all of the individuals were considered in stable condition.

Consumer products maker SC Johnson and the Environmental Defense Fund (EDF), an advocacy group, have separately undertaken initiatives seeking to limit consumer exposure to potentially harmful additives in consumer products.
Caution
Among the 368 potential skin allergens that SC Johnson says may be in its household cleaning products are
▸ Ammonium persulfate
▸ Cinnamon leaf oil
▸ Formaldehyde
▸ Hibiscus abelmoschus seed oil
▸ Menthol
▸ Methylchloroisothiazolinone
▸ Pepper oil
▸ Rosewood oil
▸ Toluene diisocyanate
▸ Turpentine
SC Johnson, the maker of cleaners such as Fantastik and Scrubbing Bubbles, has disclosed on its website 368 potential skin allergens that may be present in its products. By 2018, the website, WhatsInsideSCJohnson.com, will also list which skin allergens are contained in specific products.
All cleaning products contain potential allergens, the company says. But to reduce the likelihood that sensitive individuals could develop skin redness or a rash, the firm decided to “give families the whole story.”
The list, which an expert panel reviewed, includes both natural and synthetic skin allergens. “In many cases, naturals can have more skin allergens than synthetics,” SC Johnson says. In 2015, the firm revealed fragrances found in its products to allay toxicity fears.
Consumer product firms are being pushed to better disclose ingredients in household and personal care products. Retailers Target and Walmart, for instance, have pressured suppliers on ingredient transparency and insisted that many products be reformulated to remove problematic preservatives such as parabens and formaldehyde donors.

COLUMBIA — A small, unknown spill at the Columbia Planned Parenthood caused a building evacuation Wednesday afternoon.

Assistant Fire Chief Brad Fraizer of the Columbia Fire Department said he did not know what caused the spill or how many people were in the building at the time.

A hazmat team was sent into the building just before 5 p.m. and discovered an unknown irritant in the air, Fraizer said. A second examination by the team found that the chemical's presence in the air had decreased after members of the department ventilated the building with fans.

Four employees experienced eye irritation and coughing, Fraizer said. The employees refused medical treatment at the scene.

CRYSTAL LAKE – Part of Eastgate Road in Crystal Lake will likely remain closed for cleanup from a chemical spill through Friday – and possibly longer – after a semi-truck crash earlier this week, authorities said Thursday.

Westbound Route 14 at Hart Road in Barrington will remain closed through the evening. Officials plan to open at least one lane overnight into Friday morning, according to a news release.

The spill happened about 11:30 p.m. Tuesday when the semi collided with a pickup truck at Route 14 and Hart Road in Barrington. The semi caught fire and the product leaked onto the ground and shoulder at the scene of the crash, officials said.

Crews were originally told the substance was vegetable oil but found out the next day it was methylene diphenle diisocycanate, a chemical used in polyurethane production. The chemical can be an allergen and an irritant, officials said.

Two men were injured when a pickup collided with a semi truck Tuesday evening in northwest suburban Barrington, causing a fire and chemical spill.

The pickup and semi collided about 11:30 p.m. at Route 14 and Hart Road, according to a statement from the Village of Barrington. The semi was engulfed in flames, which were brought under control in about 35 minutes.

The 35-year-old man driving the pickup and a 49-year-old man riding with him as passenger were were taken to Good Shepherd Hospital in Barrington, authorities said. They were expected to survive. The semi driver was not hurt.

As a result of the collision, methylene diphenyl disocyanate—a substance used in the production of polyurethane—leaked onto the road, authorities said. The substance is described as an allergen and irritant, but cleanup crews were assisted by high winds on Wednesday, which dissipated the substance. The area was not considered a threat to the public outside of the contained area.
There was no risk to the water supply or the public, Illinois Environmental Protection Agency Duty Officer George Krebs, said in a statement Wednesday night.

Guilford County Schools said the situation started in a seventh grade Spanish classroom. The unidentifiable irritant spread to the hallway when students opened the door during class change.

"As far as what that chemical is, or whatever was sprayed right now we do not know,” said Tim Wright, deputy chief with the High Point Fire Department. "We don't think it was malicious type thing."

Wright said a total of 37 students complained of throat irritation. They were taken to a classroom for monitoring by Guilford County EMS.

"It's been the type of thing that it appears with time, it just wares off the irritation part,” Wright said. "It appears like whatever it was, was not anything highly toxic."

(SAVANNAH) The workweek starts with an evacuation of the very room where emergency calls are answered in Chatham County. A hazardous materials situation gets the blame for emptying the Emergency Communications Center in Savannah Monday morning. Savannah firefighters responded to the county facility just before 9:30 a.m. when communications personnel started complaining about eye, nose and throat irritations. 14 personnel were treated by emergency medical personnel on scene. Two of the individuals were transported to St. Joseph’s/Candler Hospital for further evaluation.

A suspected leak in the fire suppression system of the communications center forced the evacuation this morning of the Chatham County Annex at 295 Police Memorial Dr. Savannah Fire and Emergency Services(SFES) Hazmat crews entered the building and isolated the irritant to the fire suppression system. The chemical, Heptaflouropropane, is a compressed gas that is used to suppress fires in electronic equipment. “It’s a irritant, causes some throat, eye irritation, uh, we had a couple people, uh, that actually got nauseous.” said Mark Keller, Public Information Officer for SFES.

The Annex houses more than the 911 Call Center, scores of government employees work there. ” This is a fully functional, um, police precinct, so we have police officers in and out of the building. We have civilian staff, such as clerical staff, um that work in this building as well. the Chatham County TAG office is housed here, and again, our emergency communications center staff is housed in this building as well.” said Eunicia Baker, a public information officer for the Savannah-Chatham Metro Police Department.

Did The West Virginia Chemical Spill Harm Residents?

A study completed earlier this month by federal health officials found that chemicals leaked into West Virginia drinking water systems in early 2014 were unlikely to produce adverse health effects at levels recommended by the government.

The year-long analysis by the National Toxicology Program found that most of the chemicals analyzed in numerous studies did not show signs of negative effects, and those that did were only reflected at levels well in excess of the drinking water threshold.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued a screening level of 1 part per million for a coal washing chemical that leaked into the Elk River on January 9, 2014, but officials acknowledged that little was known about appropriate exposure levels at the time.

A storage tank that included 4-methylcyclohexanemethanol, or MCHM, and other chemicals ruptured and overwhelmed the water utility serving some 300,000 customers near Charleston.

Local residents went without water for several days under do-not-drink advisories from the water utility and the governor's office. Numerous residents complained of health problems long after the orders were lifted.

The NTP study, however, supported "the adequacy of the drinking water screening level concentrations recommended by CDC at time of spill."

Although some residents reported rashes and skin irritation in the wake of the spill, the agency said that MCHM is a skin irritant only at much higher concentrations.

One of their studies also found low birth weights when pregnant rats were given elevated doses of MCHM, but a study by West Virginia officials reportedly found no increase in low birth weights or pre-term births in the area around the spill.

Spinner said that as Lynden Fire responded, the county’s hazardous materials unit was alerted. After Lynden’s search of the units in the second building yielded nothing, the hazmat team assembled for its own search.

There were no reports of foul play at the school, and it wasn’t clear later Tuesday how or why irritant was discharged. But fire officials indicated the spay came from the type of canister used for personal self-defense.
Milford Fire Department Battalion Chief Anthony Fabrizi said only 10 of students at the private Catholic girls’ school required treatment at area hospitals. He said there were no severe reactions to the spray among the students who were exposed to it.
“The big fear in a situation like this is that it might trigger an allergic reaction and anaphylactic shock, which, of course, would be a very serious, life-threatening event,” Fabrizi said. “But, fortunately, no such reactions were seen.”
Officials decided to dismiss the girls early on Tuesday — not because of any lingering chemicals, but rather because the incident left the academic day in tatters. Lauralton Hall is expected to be open as usual Wednesday morning.

The accident happened about 7:20 p.m. Thursday, April 7, and caused mild irritation that firefighters treated by flushing the students' eyes with water, said Battalion Chief Jeff DeLaurie.
"They were beginning to do their class experiments," DeLaurie said. "What they think happened: One of the hot plates was (mistakenly) turned on. And the chemical they were using reacted to the heat...releasing some fumes.
"That wasn't part of the plan."
None of the students required a trip to the hospital.
Firefighters learned that the chemical involved in the incident was ethyl bromoacetate.
The result of the inadvertent heating was similar to releasing tear gas.
"The first chemical weapon to be used to control civil unrest was ethyl bromoacetate," according to a World Health Organization document entitled Effects on Health of Chemical Weapons. "The highly irritant vapour was intended to temporarily disable mobs."

Upon arrival, crews discovered that a small cylinder of premixed gas had accidentally been released as a result of clinic staff attempting to change the cylinder. The cylinder was filled with a gas used for laser eye surgery.

“There was a cylinder inside that’s used for a process for eye surgery. A gas used in a laser application,” said assistant fire chief Dave Bykowy.

“That’s a mix of Fluorine and helium. It’s kind of an exotic gas. We looked it up and that family of gas is indicated that it’s an irritant and inhalation hazard.”

The chemical spill at Norcold Inc. has triggered a shelter-in-place order until further notice for residents living within a mile radius south of the facility, Sidney Fire Chief Brad Jones said.
The spill of the liquid form of isocyanate, used for expanded foam insulation inside air conditioning units, prompted the order because of the wind direction, Jones said.
Crews aren’t sure of the size of the spill, he said, and there have been no reported injuries, but the spill was large enough to trigger the order that residents close all windows and doors and have no open flames in their homes until further notice.
According to the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health, isocyanates are a family of highly reactive, low molecular weight chemicals. They are widely used in the manufacture of flexible and rigid foams, fibers, coatings such as paints and varnishes, and elastomers, and are increasingly used in the automobile industry, autobody repair, and building insulation materials.
Isocyanates are powerful irritants to the mucous membranes of the eyes and gastrointestinal and respiratory tracts, according to NIOSH. Direct skin contact can also cause marked inflammation. Isocyanates can also sensitize workers, making them subject to severe asthma attacks if they are exposed again.

Maintenance workers at the Stoughton Housing Authority’s Capen Street building discovered an irritant likely inside a wall on Tuesday morning.
The men opened the wall to do work inside a vacant apartment when they became irritated.
“It overcame a couple of the workers,” said fire Capt. Jim Bertram. “They started choking. They were running some wires through.”
The Department of Fire Services’ Hazardous Materials Response team also responded to the Tier 1 hazardous materials response.
Firefighters from Stoughton and Sharon entered the room in white HAZMAT suits to try to determine the substance.
“It’s odorless and sightless,” said Deputy Fire Chief Gregory Goldberg.
The hazardous material was found in an apartment on the first floor. No one was living in that apartment or the ones surrounding or above it.

The building was evacuated, including the Mattamy Athletic Centre next door that’s part of Ryerson University. It was reopened around 10:30 p.m., when fire officials turned the building back over to its owners.
Five fire trucks were called to the scene, alongside hazmat crews, around 7:40 p.m.
Toronto paramedics attended the scene and took one victim to hospital with throat irritation. Several others reported trouble breathing, and coughing, fire officials said.
Toronto police have not yet been able to determine the cause, but are investigating reports that the irritant was pepper spray.
Sgt. Craig Somers of Toronto police told reporters at the scene that the symptoms were reported by “more than one person.”
“We’re obviously treating it very seriously,” he said. “Toronto fire is inside the building now. I have been in myself and experienced the sensation. There’s no smell — it is some sort of an airborne sensory irritant.”

Heavy smoke was reported at Kingsway Regional High School near 7:40 a.m.

Woolwich Township Police and the Gloucester County HAZMAT team responded to potentially toxic chemical fumes, according to Superintendent James Lavender.

The HAZMAT workers cleared the scene within 45 minutes.

In the routine science class experiment, lauric acid is heated to show changes in temperature. It is believed a contaminant in a beaker created a bad reaction, according to Gloucester County spokeswoman Debra Sellitto.

Lauric acid is hazardous if inhaled and is considered a skin and eye irritant, according to the chemical's Material Safety Data sheet.

Twelve students and five adult faculty members, including the science teacher, were taken by school bus to the Crozer-Chester Medical Center in Upland, Pa., as a precaution, and were screened for respiratory issues, Lavender said.

High schoolers returned to class around 9 a.m. Students were dismissed at noon due to snow conditions.

The science lab will remain closed until school officials test ventilation hoods and other lab equipment, Lavender said.

The accident happened around 6 a.m. at MFG Chemical on Kimberly Park Drive as workers were mixing chemicals in a reactor.

“We don’t know exactly what happened but the lid did not shut completely or did not shut properly,” said Dalton Fire Chief Bruce Satterfield.

Chemical fumes escaped from the reactor, overcoming one worker.

“It’s our understanding he was right on top of the reactor,” Satterfield said.

The man was taken by ambulance to WellStar Cobb Hospital in Austell. Satterfield did not know the extent of the man’s injuries.

Satterfield said four chemicals were being mixed: maleic anhydride molten low acid grade, alfa olefin 20-24, di-tert-butyl peroxide and aromatic 100 fluid. Officials said the mixture was not poisonous but an irritant.

Satterfield said the chemical reaction did not last long.

The Supreme Court ruled that the federal law shouldn't have been used to prosecute Bond, as her actions were forbidden under state or local laws. The opinion was written by Chief Justice John Roberts.

"In sum, the global need to prevent chemical warfare does not require the Federal Government to reach into the kitchen cupboard, or to treat a local assault with a chemical irritant as the deployment of a chemical weapon," Roberts wrote. "There is no reason to suppose the Congress — in implementing the Convention on Chemical Weapons — thought otherwise."

The exposure was reported shortly after 10 a.m. Tuesday. Four workers on the barge, which belongs to Ingram Barge Company, were exposed to vapors from the chemical methyl methacrylate, an irritant that can causing burning to the eyes, shortness of breath, and even respiratory failure in extreme cases.

“As weather warms up, certain chemicals produce more and more vapor, depending on how hot it is, what happens in the tank is pressure,” Tom Adams, executive director of Boyd County EMS, said. “There are safety vents that prevent the tank from rupturing that will vent the gas.”

Adams said he was not sure whether the vents opened in this case or whether workers opened a manhole that released vapors, and representatives from the Ingram Barge Company were not releasing any information about what happened as of Tuesday evening.

A rupture in a 55-gallon drum at a Springfield Township chemical plant released a vapor cloud into the air Monday morning, but the cloud dispersed quickly, and residents were not in danger, officials said.
At 5:43 a.m., firefighters and hazmat personnel were sent to Bimax Inc., 158 Industrial Road, near Susquehanna Trail South.

"The chemical release was due to a few chemicals that reacted together, causing one of the tanks to bulge and then break at the seams, which released several vapor clouds in the area," Shrewsbury Fire Chief Tony Myers said. "The chemical that was released was strictly an irritant; it poses no danger to the residents here, other than smelling bad."

Myers said one of the chemicals is used for creating a coating on optical equipment.

Emergency workers received many reports of people saying they were "sick to their stomachs" but only one person, a tractor-trailer driver, was taken to an area hospital to be examined, Myers said.

"We assume that he took a lot of breaths of the irritant" and closed his cab door, which trapped the vapor inside it, he said.

The fire was reported at Shanghai Huayi Acrylic Acid Company about 11am as nearby residents heard "very loud" sounds and sensed a "chemical smell in the air," they posted online.

Acrylic acid can be a strong irritant to the eyes and mucous membranes and can be inhaled, ingested or absorbed through the skin.

But officials said tests showed there was no danger to neighbors from chemicals at the factory.

The fire was put out by 1:50pm, according to the Shanghai Fire Prevention Bureau.

The fire occurred after an acrylic acid reactor in a factory workshop exploded during manufacturing yesterday, the company said on its website. Just before the explosion, a reactor tube cracked and caused a leak, the company said.

Terminal 2 was evacuated for about two hours Friday as hazardous materials technicians investigated what caused several people to become ill.

The cause remains under investigation, though an airport spokesman says it appears an aerosol can discharged.

Broward County Sheriff Fire Rescue spokesman Mike Jachles says three Transportation Security Administration agents and two passengers were affected by the irritant.

Investigators collected air samples and determined it was safe for people to re-enter. More than 1,000 passengers have been delayed and several inbound flights were diverted to other airports.

A hazardous materials team from the Pittsfield Fire Department responded to the hospital after a lab worker accidentally dropped a container that held the chemical formalin, which is used to preserve laboratory specimens, according to BMC spokesman Michael Leary.

"Due to the caustic nature of the material, it may cause severe eye irritation, skin irritation and it's harmful if swallowed," said Deputy Fire Chief Bruce Kilmer. "So we knew we had a definite hazmat incident, and that we were going to have to make an entry into the lab to clean it up and make air levels safe."

No injuries were reported, but the two BMC employees who were closest to the spill of less than half a gallon of formalin were taken to the hospital's occupational health center as a precaution.

Formalin, a formaldehyde solution, is considered a skin, eye and upper respiratory irritant and a probable human carcinogen after prolonged exposure.

Columbus fire's HAZMAT team responded to Westland High School, 146 Galloway Rd., at about 9:30 a.m. Monday.

South-Western City Schools' Sandy Nekoloff said there was a report of an odor in a classroom.

Columbus Division of Fire Battalion Chief Michael Fowler said they believe the cause of the odor was a drip of sodium hydroxide from a boiler near an airduct system. The chemical was previously referred to as an acute airborne irritant.

Fowler said the chemical was very diluted and was used to keep pipes in the heating system clean and that the drip is the only logical cause they could identify.

EDINBURG - A hazardous mix of cleaning supplies is all cleaned up in Edinburg. The fire chief says what happened inside a bathroom in the Edinburg CISD transportation building can happen anywhere, even in your own home.

The woman is now out of the hospital. Friday morning, Edinburg firefighters rushed in to help a worker at the transportation building. The woman was having a reaction to the fumes coming from a trash can.

Lights and sirens signaled something wasn't right inside a bathroom at the building. Cleaning supplies tossed into a bathroom trash can caused it. Edinburg fire Chief Shawn Snider says with good reason.

"They can cause a lot of harm," says Snider.

The chief says the chemicals caused a reaction. The fumes or vapors coming from the trash can were so strong it caused a worker to have trouble breathing.

"It was a vapor, and it was an irritant to the respiratory system," says Snider.

Snider says this can happen in anyone's home. He says it's important to read the labels and never mix products.

"Our hazardous material entry team went in and identified the chemical and had a reaction to chlorine bleach," says Snider.

A team trained to handle these types of calls went in. Within an hour, the scene was cleared. The worker was later released from the hospital.

Firefighters found several cleaning supplies reacted with the bleach in cleaning wipes. The chief says it can happen anywhere if you're not careful. The best thing you can do is keep cleaning supplies out of reach of your children. According to the Centers for Disease Control, never mix bleach and ammonia.

Kelowna Assistant Fire Chief Jason Brolund says they got a call about a number of people complaining of sickness.

From there a Hazmat team was sent in to investigate the Canada Post building on Baillie Avenue.

"We came to learn that the postal carriers are routinely issued animal spray, as a part of their work. It's our suspicion that some of the spray may have been discharged inside the building."

Brolund says the risk was considered low but they always treat incidents like this very seriously.

Kathi Neal, a communications Manager with Canada Post says they were fortunate that the situation was handled so well.

"Luckily the emergency responders came on site so quickly and did a thorough investigation. So we felt comfortable to allow our employees back in a round 10am Tuesday morning. Now they did lose some work time, however we really are not expecting any delays of mail at this time."

Neal says two letter carriers were taken to hospital but both have been discharged and no one was hurt.

The Hampton Bays Fire Department’s hazardous materials team ran a drill at Hampton Bays Elementary School last Thursday, August 26, after responding to a minor incident there, according to John Rankin, a fire marshal who was at the scene.

Hampton Bays Superintendent Lars Clemensen said the school district called in the hazmat team after a janitor dropped an old corroded fire extinguisher in the school’s basement at around 9 a.m. and it discharged soda ash. The fire marshal’s office responded to the call and decided to use the time to complete a routine drill at the school since members of the fire department’s team were already on site, Mr. Rankin said.

Soda ash, or sodium carbonate, is a non-toxic chemical often used in the shipping of hazardous chemicals and is commonly used as a neutralizer in pools, Mr. Rankin said. The janitor, whose name was not released, was taken by ambulance to Southampton Hospital as a precaution but was not injured, according to town fire officials.
