At the time the PSNI advised residents to keep doors and windows closed while they deal with the blaze.

The fire was reported at about 7.30pm.

Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service group commander Alastair McConville said operations were "hampered" by hazardous materials onsite.

Four fire engines were at the scene along with an aerial appliance, a water tanker and a command support unit.

Scientists should be aware of the impact social media could have on their work. A new study shows that to reduce the chance of disruption due to legislative, regulatory or funding changes linked to public opinion, it is important to include social media when considering risk.

Finbarr Murphy, from the University of Limerick in Ireland, and colleagues performed a sentiment analysis of tweets between 2006 and 2020 relating to three areas of nanoscience – silver, carbon and titanium – to examine the public perception of nanotechnology. They found that overall public perception is slightly positive. But whilst positive events have little to no impact on tweet volume or perception, adverse events caused an increase in the volume of tweets presenting a negative opinion.

If an event is perceived badly enough to generate a twitterstorm, this decrease in public confidence could have far reaching impacts, with legislation, research funding and insurance coverage all susceptible to public opinion. As many research grants are through public funds, a large negative shift in public opinion towards nanotechnology could result in a decrease in funding available for research in that area.

Two men - one in his 40s and the other in his 30s - were rushed to Cork University Hospital with what are believed to be serious, but non-life threatening injuries. A third man in his thirties received treatment for his injuries at the scene.

Gardaí arrested a man, aged in his 30s - shortly after midnight on Friday - who was being detained on Saturday morning under Section 4 of The Criminal Justice Act 1984 at Bridewell Garda Station.

Second officer from Cork City Fire Brigade, Victor Shine described the scene.

"We had specialist teams there with various detection equipment to try to isolate down what the chemical actually was,” he said.

“We could only speculate based on our previous experience of handling chemicals and colours what it might have been.

"There is a lot of experience that is being put into this kind of scenario. Your levels of protections have to be appropriate to cover the worst-case scenarios."

He explained the types of dangers an incident like this can pose to others.

"The ambulance crew were unable to rush into this situation because they didn't have the PPE that the fire service has.

"They held back until the casualties were appropriately decontaminated which we have to give them credit for. This was a multi-agency approach and we'd like to extend our gratitude and credit to everyone who was involved including the Gardaí, trauma doctor, Dr Hugh Doran, as well as specialist teams from city council and other environmental agencies."

Mr Shine spoke of the precautions taken on-site.

"On this occasion the numbers were small so we were able to use localised equipment such as diphotorine which is the gold standard of neutralising chemicals from acids," he said. "The person can then be transported to hospital by ambulance.

"Patients won't be accepted in the emergency medicine department if they are contaminated so this has to be done on-site. What was carried out was a total decontamination of three people on scene.

"We didn't set up a tent in this instance as the people were being moved quite quickly to the hospital due to the nature of their injuries. What we did use is a neutralising agent called diphotorine which neutralises any acids or bases back to a neutral PH. This was used on all parts of the body to limit the damage."

He described the incident as complicated in nature.

"We have the ability to check out chemicals as long as we know what they are. However, when we're in unknown territory it gets very complicated. While the nature of this incident was rare, chemical contamination wouldn't be unusual for us.

A woman who had to abandon her Dublin 4 home due to a toxic chemical spill at a neighbour’s property has claimed before the High Court that repair works are causing further damage to her house.
Last year, Sharon Keane and her two children had to move out of their family home at 22 Grand Canal Street, Dublin 4 following a spillage of a hazardous chemical called Xylene that was being stored on the property of her neighbours Thomas and Bronwyn Dunne.
At the High Court on Friday Ms Keane secured a temporary injunction from Mr Justice Max Barrett preventing building, remedial and construction works being carried out of the Dunnes property, at 20 Grand Canal Street.
The works are to cease pending an inspection and survey of the property by Ms Keane’s consulting engineers as to the extent of the excavations being carried by the defendants and their contractors, the court ordered.
The order was sought due to Ms Keane’s concerns that the works currently being conducted on the Dunne’s property is causing further damage to the plaintiff’s home.
Her counsel Gary McCarthy SC, instructed by Bunbury Darcy Solicitors, said that the strong fumes and odour that severely affected their health from the xylene spillage in September 2020 resulted in Ms Keane and her children having to leave their home.

Several of Ireland’s leading stud farms have joined together to oppose plans for a battery-energy storage facility in rural Co Kildare. John Malone’s Castlemartin Stud, the Aga Khan’s Gilltown and Sallymount studs, the Irish National Stud and the Irish Thoroughbred Breeders’ Association have all lodged objections to a proposal for 76 battery-storage units at Dunnstown, near Two Mile House in Co Kildare.

They claim the location of the proposed power plant — within 5km of 20 stud farms — is inappropriate due to the risk of fire. The facilities store excess energy from the national grid, and feed it back to meet demand.

I co-ordinate the Marie Curie ITN Protected project, a network that researches the global threat to public health and the environment from endocrine disruptors. As part of that, we grow human cells in the lab and then add the chemicals to them and analyse their effects. We also test chemical mixtures, modelled on the types and concentrations of chemicals that have been found in human blood. This makes our work more realistic to the human situation.
What have you been finding?
In the Protected project, our tests show that endocrine disruptors can affect hormone receptors found within our cells, and even disturb connections between brain cells. Recently my group at Queen’s has been assessing chemicals used to replace bisphenol A (BPA), a substance used to make plastics. We have found that some of these replacement chemicals are actually more hormonally active in the lab than BPA.”

The blaze in a garage adjoining a semi-detached house on Larkhill Road broke out in the early hours of this morning.

A hazard warning remains in place as the roof contained low-level asbestos.

Sligo Fire Service was called to the scene at 5am and gardaí were also in attendance.

As a precautionary measure, due to low levels of asbestos material, and pending an inspection by the Health and Safety Authority, a small number of houses were evacuated.

A chemical fire has damaged a factory in East Cork.

An investigation into the cause of the incident at the TRS Global Services facility at the IDA Industrial Estate in Carrigtwohill is underway.

The alarm was raised just before 4pm after fire broke out in a large plastic container of hydrochloric acid, with an estimated capacity of up to 1,000-litres.

It's believed the container was more than a third full at the time and that a large volume of acid spilled.

The acid vapourised on contact with the air, and the drifting gas cloud forced the temporary shutdown of air handling units at the nearby Stryker plant, disrupting some of that plant’s processes for a time.

It is understood that the incident occured after 06:13 on Sunday morning with Shannon Fire Brigade ordered to the site at 07:02 following reports of smoke on the ground floor of a building. Ennis Fire Brigade were also mobilised to the incident as backup.

“On attendance, they met with Avara personnel, and a search of the particular building was then carried out by Fire Service personnel wearing Breathing Apparatus. It was determined that there may have been an equipment fault earlier, and the building was then declared safe by the Fire Service,” a spokesperson for Clare County Council told The Clare Echo.

The Clare Echo understands that the fire occurred due to poorly maintained equipment overheating which subsequently filled a production area with smoke, then setting off the main site evacuation alarm.

It is listed by the HSA as a notified Seveso lower tier establishment. “Major industrial accidents involving dangerous substances pose a significant threat to humans and the environment, such accidents can give rise to serious injury to people or serious damage to the environment, both on and off the site of the accident. In Europe, a catastrophic accident in the Italian town of Seveso in 1976 prompted the adoption of legislation on the prevention and control of such accidents,” a statement on the HSA’s website reads

One person is being treated in hospital, following an incident at chemical manufacturing company in Shannon.

The man was hospitalised as a precaution, after a hazardous material incident was accidentally triggered, for what was later found to be minor occurrence.

Emergency services were alerted at around half past ten this morning, to an incident at the Reagecon facility in the Shannon Industrial Estate.

A man, who had been working with chemicals in an extraction hood, alerted the company’s on-site first aid personnel after he smelled a hazardous chemical.

Gardaí, ambulance paramedics and units from Clare County Fire and Rescue Service from Shannon and Ennis were dispatched to the scene, as well as members of the fire service’s specialist ‘hazmat’ team.

The man was assessed at the scene by National Ambulance Service paramedics and removed to University Hospital Limerick as a precaution.

A company spokesman said: “One of our chemists, who was manufacturing a routine chemical mixture in an extraction hood, got a smell of a chemical that is hazardous. As a precaution he alerted our internal first aid team who went through our own usual internal protocols which includes carrying out a medical assessment and where required seeking further qualified medical attention.

In this instance, a call was made to the ambulance service and the call inadvertently triggered a full ‘hazmat’ response. The patient was checked by the Fire Service and his clothes changed before he was taken to hospital for a final medical check-up and is in perfect health.”

The recent outbreak of vaping-related deaths and illnesses in the US could be down to the pyrolysis, or thermal decomposition, of a vitamin E additive present in some unregulated vaping mixtures, according to researchers in Ireland. The team discovered the process can create an extremely reactive organic compound whose effects resemble those of a first world war chemical weapon.

The pyrolysis of phenyl acetate produces a highly toxic gas, so it occurred to me that vitamin E acetate was likely to have similar chemical reactivity

Since September 2019, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has recorded 57 deaths and over 2600 lung-injury cases related to vaping in the US in connection with unregulated vaping mixtures that contain tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD) oils. Recent research has found that vaping-related health impacts were being reported as long as seven years ago. The first preliminary reports into solving the mysterious vaping deaths and illnesses suggested that a build-up of lipids or oils in the lungs could be responsible.

Vitamin E acetate, which has a honey-like consistency, soon fell under suspicion as the chemical culprit because it was known to be used as a thickening or diluting agent in many THC and CBD formulations. It’s considered non-toxic and used in vitamin supplements and skin creams, but inhaling it could cause health problems.

The Health and Safety Authority has urged companies to ensure they meet their legal obligations and review risk assessments for the storage of hazardous chemicals on their sites as they stockpile.

HSA assistant chief executive Yvonne Mullooly said that as the “clock ticks down” to the UK’s departure from the EU on October 31st, the regulator was aware that some companies had been increasing their stocks of raw materials for manufacturing components or finished goods on premises and in warehouses.

The safety regulator said the use and storage of hazardous chemicals presented “one of the highest hazards in warehouses and storehouses”.

Workers in nail bars are putting their health in danger through poor understanding of the risks of handling certain chemicals used in the sector, the health safety watchdog has warned.
The Health and Safety Authority has published guidance on chemical health and safety in such businesses and said the findings of inspections it had carried out indicated a poor understanding of the risks. It also noted a lack of standardised qualification for the work being carried on in nail bars.
It warned that as well as the risk of severe skin reactions such as dermatitis from liquid and powder acrylic nail systems, the fumes could cause headaches, dizziness, nausea and irritation. The filing of artificial nails could cause asthma, it said.
Formaldehyde in nail strengtheners could also cause cancer and was suspected of causing genetic defects. Another chemical used to stop nail polish cracking was banned in Europe and was dangerous for pregnant women.
A total of 15 inspections were carried out in the nail bar industry by its occupational hygiene inspectors as part of the chemicals programme of work last year.

Hardware and discount stores all over the country are to be targeted by inspectors to ensure their products don't contain any banned chemicals and are safe to the public.
Chemicals such as cadmium, nickel and lead are banned in jewellery, while benzene, chloroform and toluene are banned in glues and adhesives.
Inspections will focus on cleaning and laundry products; air fresheners and reed diffusers; paint products such as thinners; jewellery; and glues.

The Health and Safety Authority (HSA) today launched the nationwide inspection campaign to see if products comply with the relevant EU chemical legislation, which is designed to improve chemical safety.
The packaging of products will also be checked to ensure child-resistant fastenings and tactile warnings of danger are included where required.

"We will focus our inspections on discount stores and hardware stores. Specifically, we will be checking the labelling information and also packaging to ensure that products which are required to have child-resistant fastenings are compliant. We will also be checking jewellery and glues for the presence of banned substances," said Kevin Buckley, senior inspector with the HSA.

Testing and commissioning at the Poolbeg incinerator remains suspended after 11 workers were taken to hospital following an incident at the €600m plant.

The workers went to St Vincent's Hospital in Dublin after complaining of nausea, breathing difficulties and blurred vision, which followed the release of a small amount of hydrated lime in the building.

Three investigations are under way: one by the incinerator operator, US firm Covant; a second by the Health and Safety Authority (HSA), and a third by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), which licences the plant.

The EPA said it would require Covanta to produce a full report, which would address "corrective and preventative actions" to be taken.

"On foot of this report and the EPA's own investigation, further action may be considered," it said.

The incident occurred at 10.45pm on Wednesday. Around 30 workers were dismantling scaffolding in a part of the building close to the boilers when a small quantity of hydrated lime, which Covanta said was no more than two cubic metres, was released inside the flue gas treatment area.

Dangerous

Lime is used to help remove dangerous toxins while waste is being incinerated.

Eleven workers complained of feeling ill and received medical attention on site, before making their way to St Vincent's Hospital. Two of them were detained overnight.

In a statement Covanta said that a "number of workers" were in an adjacent area to the gas treatment area and were taken to hospital for evaluation "as a precaution".

The statement added: "Combustion Unit No 1, which was operating at the time, was shut down.

Cameron Dickson was playing with friends on waste ground near the Shankill Road on Wednesday when they came across several abandoned drums of chemicals.

It is understood someone opened one of the containers and the schoolboy inhaled some of the liquid.

A family friend later spotted his symptoms and he was admitted into intensive care at the Royal Belfast Hospital for Sick Children on Wednesday evening. At the time his condition was described as critical.

Cameron's parents released a picture of their son in hospital to warn others of the dangers.

TWO OF THE men who are trying to take cases against the Air Corps over claims they were exposed to dangerous chemicals at Baldonnel Airfield say they have developed cancer since starting the litigation.
The men, who have been attempting to have their case heard since 2013, are just two of six people who have cases which are currently at the ‘discovery’ phase.
One of the men was diagnosed with skin cancer last week. He says he has it in three places on his body – his head, arms and leg.
The other man says he was diagnosed with renal cancer in 2015. A tumour was discovered on his kidney after several visits to his doctor.
The men have maintained that their exposure to a number of chemicals at Baldonnel Airfield has led to them suffering from serious illnesses.
As reported by TheJournal.ie earlier this year, it has been claimed that long-term exposure to the substances led to cases of cancers, respiratory illnesses and mental health problems among members of the Defence Forces.
A new protected disclosure, also reported by this publication last week, alleged that a number of children of Air Corps staff have died as a result of being exposed to toxic chemicals.

Five units of cork city and county fire services attended at the scene with fire crews travelling from the city, Charleville, Kanturk and Mallow stations in a bid to get the fire under control.
The main damage was to an extension to the school, which was built 20 years ago.
The extension consisted of three science laboratories with a tiered demonstration room, two drawing rooms, a building construction room, a geography laboratory with a weather satellite link and four classrooms.
Residents living close to the fire were evacuated from their homes.
Fair Street remained closed for much on Wednesday morning but has subsequently reopened.

The factory was evacuated and people living nearby were asked to stay in their homes, due to a toxic cloud forming around the spill.

It took around four hours for the situation to be dealt with. The factory is now back to normal.

NIFRS district commander of Cookstown Andy Sinclair said: "We had 25 firefighters at the scene of this serious incident.

"Eight firefighters, wearing specialist suits, were tasked to specifically deal with the large spill. We were lucky that the wind was blowing in the right direction for us, otherwise we may have had to evacuate surrounding homes, due to the toxic nature of the gases."

A grenade left over from the second World War left 13 people needing hospital treatment in England.

The casualties were exposed to toxic fumes after workmen disturbed the stockpile of phosphorous grenades left in the sealed-up cellar of a property in Bamber Bridge near Preston, Lancashire.

It is thought one of the grenades, issued to members of the Home Guard during the war, was dislodged and cracked, Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service said. The devices, glass bottles about eight inches long, were intended to release a highly flammable mixture of phosphorus and benzene after being thrown, self-igniting on exposure to air.

They were to be used by reservists against Nazi occupiers if Britain had fallen to German invasion, but had lain forgotten for almost 70 years in the sealed-off cellar of a former fire station, now used as a printing firm premises. A further six such devices were found in cellar space which had been bricked up for some years.

The Health and Safety Authority is to visit the C&D Foods plant in Edgeworthstown, Co Longford on Monday, after an ammonia leak that led to the evacuation of the plant today.
Two units of Longford fire services were called to the pet food manufacturing plant after locals reported a strong smell of ammonia in the town and in a children's playing area near the plant.
The fire services worked for four hours to help contain a leak of ammonia at the plant. Production has now recommenced and the alert is over.

The Defence Forces carried out a controlled explosion on the chemical, called celloidin wool, which was found to be unstable during a routine audit of chemicals at DKIT.
The bomb disposal team was called to the campus at around 4.10pm this afternoon after being alerted by Gardaí. The area around the scene was evacuated as the team dealt with the unstable chemical.
The chemical was rendered safe at the scene and a controlled explosion was carried out to dispose of it. The scene was declared safe at 4.45pm.
Celloidin wool is a chemical used in laboratories which can become unstable as it dries out.
This is the 114th call out so far this year for a bomb disposal team.

Liam Nodwell (58) died after suffering burns to 90pc of his body in a huge explosion on April 28, 2008, at the Corden PharmaChem plant in Little Island, Cork.

His burns were so bad that the ambulance that brought the dying man to Cork University Hospital later had to be taken out of service by the HSE and decontaminated.

Yesterday, Liam's brother and sister, Jimmy and Sheila Nodwell, told the Irish Independent nothing would ever make up for the loss of a devoted father, husband, brother and friend.

"He was a father figure to all of us -- he was a marvellous, kind, devoted man. He was worth 10 times €300,000. That's all we can say," they said.

Corden was fined €300,000 and ordered to pay costs of €72,000 after what Judge Patrick Moran at Cork Circuit Criminal Court said was "a very serious (safety) breach".

Mr Nodwell of Church Hill, Glanmire, died just hours after the explosion, which blew apart sections of the firm's Production Block II facility.

A second employee -- James O'Sullivan -- suffered multiple injuries but survived.

A civil action is understood to be still ongoing.

Corden pleaded guilty to four different breaches of health and safety regulations.

The company expressed its regrets and sympathies to the Nodwell family on their loss.

Father-of-one Liam Nodwell (58) from Glanmire on the outskirts of Cork city was fatally injured.

His workmate Jimmy O’Sullivan was seriously injured in the chemical explosion which happened in a process reactor on the 20-acre site.

Yesterday at Cork Circuit Criminal Court, company director Patrick Burke pleaded guilty on behalf of the company to the four breaches of the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005 when the company was arraigned on the charges.

Corden Pharma Ltd pleaded guilty to failing to ensure the safety and prevention of risk to health at work in that it failed to implement control measures to control an emission from a chemical reaction leading to the death of Mr Nodwell and injury to Mr O’Sullivan.

ARMY BOMB DISPOSAL experts have made safe an unstable chemical after sealing off several streets near St Stephen’s Green in Dublin.
The military unit was called in to the Catholic University School on Lower Leeson Street, after a quantity of picric acid was found. The bomb disposal team removed the chemical to a nearby piece of open ground, then carried out a controlled explosion.
Traffic was stopped in the area as the unit arrived at 4.15pm. The scene was declared safe at 6.10pm.
According to the Defence Forces, the substance was discovered during a routine audit of chemicals held in the school’s science department. Picric acid is a reagent which is routinely used in laboratories, but over time it can crystallise and become unstable.
It has caused a number of alerts in recent weeks, including some at schools in Limerick and Celbridge, and the offices of the pharmaceutical regulator in Dublin. The Leeson Street incident is the 21st time this year that the unit has dealt with dangerous substances, and its 186th call-out since January.

THE IRISH DEFENCE Forces have carried out controlled explosions on dangerous chemicals discovered in two schools in Dublin and Cork today.
The Forces’ Army Bomb Disposal Team was called to Grange Community College in Donaghmede, Dublin just after 2pm this afternoon after a quantity of 2, 4-Dinitrophenylhydrazine was discovered.
2, 4-Dinitrophenylhydrazine is a chemical reagent which is found in laboratories.
It is relatively sensitive to shock and friction and can become unstable over time if it crystallises.
The quantity of the chemical was removed from the school to a safe location, where it was destroyed by means of a controlled explosion and the scene was declared safe at 3.30pm.
In a second incident, the Army Bomb Disposal Team was called to St Mary’s Secondary School in Macroom, Co Cork at around 3pm after another quantity of 2, 4-Dinitrophenylhydrazine was discovered.
Again, the chemical was removed to a safe located and destroyed by a controlled explosion.
Today’s call outs were the 185th and 186th this year, and the 20th and 21st involving what the Defence Forces call “substances of concern”.

The plan was activated in response to a chemical reaction incident in a room adjoining Surgical Ward 2. Nobody was injured although the fire brigade was called to deal with the episode.

It understood that the incident did not relate to a chemical spill but rather an incident involving fumes in a chemical waste bin.

The bin was located in a washroom next to the surgery ward. Fire services were able to remove it from the hospital before treating it outside by pouring water on it.

The chemical is said to have been chlorine which is used for disinfection and it’s believed that it reacted with something else in the bin.

Over 30 patients were temporarily moved from a ward of St Luke’s General Hospital in Co Kilkenny following a chemical scare this afternoon.

The incident happened shortly after 1.15pm when a chemical reaction in a bin containing cleaning agents caused alarm over the spreading of fumes. The 31 patients were moved as a precaution after the hospital’s internal emergency plan was enforced and the services of the fire brigade sought.

A spokesman for Kilkenny fire brigade said the chemical was contained in a bin in a washroom next to the surgery ward. Fire services were able to remove it from the hospital before treating it outside by pouring copious amounts of water on it.

He said the chemical in question was a type of chlorine used for disinfection that had reacted with something else in the bin.

WORKERS HAD to be evacuated from a factory in Co Clare early yesterday after 250 litres of sulphuric acid were accidentally spilled inside the plant.

The alarm was raised at about 6.30am when staff reported the spill in a storage area at the rear of an Essilor Ireland plant on the outskirts of Ennis.

The company, known as Organic Lens Manufacturing, produces ophthalmic corrective lenses and is located in the Gort Road industrial estate where it employs more than 300 workers.

About 50 staff were working at the time and they were quickly evacuated to emergency meeting points outside the plant where management carried out a roll call to ensure that everyone was accounted for. The company’s emergency response team was deployed pending arrival of the emergency services.

Investigations are under way after a "serious incident" involving the possible release of toxic chemicals at a Dublin plant.

An emergency containment plan was put in place at the Arch Chemical plant on Watery Lane in Swords, Co Dublin, shortly after 5pm last night.

Investigations involving the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the Health and Safety Authority, the gardai and Dublin Fire Brigade are now in operation.

Some 13 units of the Dublin Fire Brigade were dispatched to the scene along with a hazardous material unit.

ORGANISMS

They were alerted after an anti-fungal material called copper pyrithione or copper omadine was discharged at the plant after a boiler overheated.

The powder is considered to be highly toxic. It can be fatal if inhaled and can also burn the eyes. After a thorough sweep of the plant it was declared safe by 8.30pm last night.

An Army bomb disposal unit today carried out a controlled explosion on an unstable chemical at a laboratory in the Royal College of Surgeons in Dublin.

Authorities at the college on St Stephen's Green contacted the emergency services shortly before 12.30pm after an internal audit of the lab found the chemical had degraded to a dangerous state.

Following an examination of the chemical by the bomb disposal team, the chemical was deemed unsafe to transport and was subsequently made safe through a controlled explosion on nearby waste ground.

The offending material is understood to have been 30g of picric acid, a potentially explosive substance which is commonly used by laboratories in the analysis of metals and ores.

When the substance goes beyond a certain timeframe, it can become dangerous to transport.
