A Ph.D candidate at UNH who is facing criminal charges after an apparent hazmat situation near campus over the weekend was trying to follow a YouTube video that specifically warned viewers not to repeat the experiment, according to Durham police.

Police said the suspect, Emad Mustafa, 29, called authorities himself on Saturday, saying he may have been exposed to a toxic chemical.

According to new court documents, Mustafa told officers he believed he had made a chemical called dimethyl mercury inside his Oyster River home.

He told officers that mixing the chemical caused a flash-burn, creating smoke and toxic vapor.

He was taken to the hospital and treated, but that process launched a multi-department investigation.

Mustafa admitted that another tenant may have also been exposed to the chemicals.

Town officials in Durham said Mustafa identified the chemicals as mercury, sodium and dimethyl sulfate.

KINGSTON, Mass. — Investigators suspect a man was making homemade explosives or fireworks when he was seriously injured and flown to a Boston hospital from a Kingston home on Sunday afternoon, police said.

The explosion inside the Nobadeer Circle home shortly after 1 p.m. Sunday drew a response from the Massachusetts State Police Bomb Squad and FBI investigators, a hazmat crew, as well as local police and fire investigators, state and local police said.

The man’s condition or the extent of his injuries were not immediately available on Sunday.

The large emergency response to the home resulted from “the type/amount of materials present” found inside the home “and additional materials/powders consistent with bomb-making,” Kingston Police Detective Lt. Michael Skowyra said in a statement.

“The materials were collected and rendered safe. There is no public safety risk at this time and the investigation remains ongoing,” said Skowyra, who did not provide further details on the materials at the scene.

DEER PARK, Texas (KTRK) -- A lawsuit has been filed against a Deer Park plant for the "catastrophic release and fire" that injured multiple workers on May 5.

Attorneys from Arnold and Itkin said the fire led to serious injuries, including to their client.

According to documents, the $1 million lawsuit against Shell Chemical L.P. states Cristobal Jasso suffered "significant injuries as a result of (Shell's) negligence, gross negligence, and premises liability." Some of the injuries include burns, as well as injuries to (Jasso's) neck, back, spine, and other parts of the body.

The fire broke out at about 3 p.m. at 5900 State Highway 225, according to Shell. Heavy smoke was seen from miles away as SkyEye flew over the plant.

"The doctor says he's doing well. He's doing good, but I have seen a lot of the arms, the face all red. Red burns on his body. His face is red hot. His arms - everything, because the oil and the steam splashed everywhere in his body," Jasso's father, Pablo Jasso, told Eyewitness News in the immediate aftermath of the fire.

Authorities initially said some type of "explosion" unfolded at the plant, but later corrected it to only a fire emergency.

Officials described the chemical released as a "hydrocarbon," which they say is a heavy gas oil and precursor to the production of gas and diesel.

Shell said it still doesn't know what caused the fire, but the lawsuit claims they "were objectively aware of the extreme risk posed by the conditions which caused plaintiff's injuries but did nothing to rectify them."

The facility said 15 people had to be evaluated for their injuries at the hospital.

Shell hasn't immediately responded to the lawsuit.

A full evacuation of a commercial building was ordered following the chemical spill, a hazmat team told News Center 7 crews who responded to the scene.

One employee was reportedly “exposed” to the chemical, prompting medical units to respond.

An employee was transported to an area hospital, while another refused transport after being treated at the scene, Assistant Chief Eric Barhorst of Sidney Fire said.

Although the call came in as an industrial spill of hydrochloric acid, a preliminary investigation found that the chemical was a sodium metabisulfite solution, Barhorst continued.

Emergency responders were able to confirm that the product did not leak; however, there was an “active chemical reaction in the container,” Barhorst said. Firefighters and employees mitigated the situation with neutralizing material made to control the chemical.

Emergency responders were able to clear the chemical spill within about two hours.

The apartment building was evacuated, and Chattanooga Fire Department companies responded, carefully monitoring every unit's air quality to ensure that it was safe for residents to return to their homes.

A worker in a vacant apartment at the complex was said to be resurfacing a bathtub, and vapors built up after chemicals were sprayed with no ventilation.

The vapors were said to cause a spark and caused a small explosion, blowing out the apartment's windows and the bathroom door off its hinges.

The worker was left with burns and was transported to the hospital for further treatment.

Officials say everyone is back in their apartments now, and a city building inspector came to the scene to check the structure out of caution.

GREENVILLE (WWJ) - One worker at a manufacturing facility in West Michigan was severely burned after an explosion rocked the area on Friday evening, authorities confirmed.

Greenville Department of Public Safety Sgt. Steve Dewitt said the explosion occurred around 9:45 p.m. at the Dicastal manufacturing facility in Greenville, near Grand Rapids.

Dewitt said all employees were accounted for with one transported to a local hospital with severe burn injures.

According to their website, Discastal produces aluminum alloy wheels for the auto industry, in addition to melting, casting, heat treating and product testing.

The combined chemicals and metals used at the facility proved tough for firefighting efforts.

“One of the challenges that we have with this type of fire is we cannot use water on liquid metal," DeWitt said. "Aluminum, magnesium reacts violently with water so it’s not a traditional firefighting effort, we can’t just put water on it and put it out. So we have to use dry chemicals or we have to remove the oxygen from the fire. So that’s very challenging."

The sergeant said there was no environmental or health threat to the immediate area.

The turn-on of the world’s fastest and brightest x-ray free electron laser (XFEL) has been delayed by an accident that left a worker injured and hospitalised on the morning of 27 December 2022. A spokesperson for the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC) in the US says that the cause was an ‘electrical incident during maintenance activities involving high voltage equipment’. According to the San Francisco Standard a high-voltage electric arc struck an electrician who was shutting down power to the lab and disfigured them.

Mike Dunne, director of the SLAC Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS) XFEL, said the incident happened during the facility’s annual closure during the Christmas and new year period. At a public meeting at the Royal Society in London, UK on 30 January, he said that the situation was ‘very unfortunate and troubling’.

Dunne is leading the LCLS-II upgrade, which he said at the Royal Society had taken 10 years and cost just over $1 billion (£820 million) in total. The upgrade to the XFEL will increase the frequency and brightness of its x-ray pulses 10,000-fold. Combined with the fact that x-ray wavelengths are about the size of an atom, the improvements will enable experiments to study important chemical processes with remarkable time resolution. Studies including spectroscopy and diffraction will be able to follow reactions and produce molecular movies capturing details lasting a few femtoseconds, or quadrillionths-of-a-second.

Dunne noted that the accident wasn’t directly related to LCLS-II. He added that everyone that worked at SLAC was still recovering from the consequences. ‘As a lab, we have to reflect on how a serious accident happened and what it means for our programmes,’ Dunne commented. The US Department of Energy is now investigating the incident and will issue a report in coming months, the SLAC spokesperson says.

In an article in New Scientist in December 2022, Dunne said that he had hoped that LCLS-II would produce its first record-breaking x-rays in February or March 2023. At the Royal Society meeting he said that the LCLS-II team was now projecting late April for turn-on.

Safety complaints
The San Francisco Standard obtained details issued in a report from the DOE, which in August 2022 awarded Stanford University a $3 billion five-year contract to run SLAC. The report states that co-workers heard the electrical arc, rushed to the scene, and called emergency services.

A separate DOE notice says that the electrician was working on the wrong part of the circuit, the Standard reports. ‘In addition, the injured worker was not wearing the required shock hazard and arc flash hazard [personal protective equipment] at the time of the incident,’ the notice continues.

However, the latest incident follows a series of accidents and complaints about safety at SLAC, the Standard reports, including a ‘significant hand injury’ to an employee operating machinery in April 2022. ‘The lab has worked to respond to safety incidents with both immediate and long-term actions to ensure the ongoing safety of all conducting work onsite,’ a SLAC spokesperson tells Chemistry World.

Firefighters were called to the Ssonix Products facility at 20 Keefer Rd. at 6:35 a.m. on Thursday, said St. Catharines Fire Chief Dave Upper, describing it as a hazardous material company.

As firefighters continued to fight the initial fire, he said the flames spread to an industrial building next door, igniting the building as well as its contents.

“We’ve had a partial collapse to that building which has made it challenging to put the fire out there,” Upper said.

It took firefighters until about 2 p.m. to bring the blaze under control, but crews remained on scene addressing hot spots.

Upper said paint products, aerosol cans, sanitizers, and oxidizers were inside the plant as the fire raged through it. He said all the chemicals products were a concern.

“The level of risk is high, but we’ve seen worse,” Upper said.

He was, however, concerned about another chemical stored in another part of the building that had yet to be impacted by the fire.

Paramedics transported one person to a local hospital and five others were evaluated on scene after a hazardous chemical release Wednesday, Jan. 4 at a warehouse in Kent.

Puget Sound Fire and King County Medic One responded at about 2:05 p.m. to Univar, 8201 S. 212th St., according to an email from Puget Sound Fire spokesperson Pat Pawlak. One person evaluated by paramedics was an employee from Univar and the other five were from a neighboring business.

“The tank depressurized right after the initial release, which stopped the leak,” Pawlak said.

Univar Solutions is a nationwide wholesale distributor of chemical products; it stores, packages, and distributes chemical products to meet customer needs. Univar Solutions (formerly Van Waters & Rogers and Univar USA Inc.) has operated at the site since 1974, according to the state Department of Ecology website.

The Univar facility in Kent has a warehouse, office, dock, and parking areas on an 11-acre site, surrounded by other commercial and industrial properties.

Contaminated site

The Department of Ecology is familiar with Univar because of contamination from waste management activities and accidental chemical releases. Studies that started in the 1990s showed that soil in two areas of the eastern portion of the site are contaminated with organic chemicals and chlorinated compounds, according to state documents and a June 2, 2022 update.

“Groundwater is also contaminated,” according to the state report. “Most of the groundwater contamination remains located beneath the property. Some contaminants in the deeper part of the aquifer have flowed north under 212th Street and beneath an adjacent industrial property.”

Workers tell KX News a supply truck was delivering cleaning supplies. That’s when employees say they could smell something in the back room and soon realize the cleaning supplies had frozen and exploded.

Employees say they called their district manager, who told a manager at the store to clean it up. But the manager on duty got sick from the mixed chemicals and was taken to Trinity Hospital in an ambulance.

Workers say they were then told to go to work anyway, and say they are also feeling sick and went to the emergency room to get checked out.

“I was cleaning the store and happened to go back there a few times just to check it out, see how things were going. And it just reeked like chemicals. You could just smell it. Ever since that night, I’ve been having headaches, I’ve been having a lung problem on my left side,” said Trenton Jacobs, an employee the Dollar General.

“I’m getting checked, my lungs hurt, I’m coughing up white foamy stuff, my head hurts. Everything feels swollen and cold inside,” said Jennifer Gerard, also an employee at the Dollar General.

Employees tell KX news the district manager attempted to clean the store, and the store remains open.

An ammonia wagon overturned near the Serbian town of Pirot, 51 people were hospitalized, and a state of emergency was declared in the town. It has a sizable Bulgarian minority.

Pirot Mayor Vladan Vasic declared a state of emergency in the town last night after a wagon of a freight train carrying ammonia overturned near Sopotski Khan. During the accident, gas leaked from the carriage and a high concentration of ammonia was released into the atmosphere, as a result of which 51 people were hospitalized with symptoms of poisoning. Due to the state of emergency, schools in Pirot will not be open today.

The wagon of the freight train carrying ammonia overturned around 5:30 p.m. on a section of the railway from Pirot to the village of Stanichene, near Sopotski Khan, the Serbian Interior Ministry said.

RTS reported that the accident occurred when a group of 20 tankers derailed, "at least one of which fell into the riverbed of the Nishava river, which caused a violent reaction of ammonia upon contact with the water." The Emergency Department of the Serbian Interior Ministry confirmed that 51 people with symptoms of ammonia poisoning have been hospitalized so far, two of them with severe symptoms. Seven people were transferred to the University Clinical Center in Nis. They have stable vital signs and mild chemical burns. The Ministry of the Interior urged the citizens who live near the accident not to leave their homes and not to go outdoors.

27 firefighters with 10 fire trucks were sent to the scene. Due to the incident, the railway traffic on this line was stopped. Due to poor visibility, the traffic between Pirot and Bela Palanka on the main road has been interrupted. The alternative route is through the village of Ponor. Second-shift workers at “Tiger Tires” have also been evacuated, and third-shift workers will not come to work.

The company "Serbia Cargo" reported that this is a freight train that runs daily on the Nis-Dimitrovgrad section and transports raw materials from Bulgaria to Prahovo and Shabac. AFP reported that chemical waste from Bulgaria was also transported in the wagons of the derailed train.

Emergency responders were triaging and treating patients who were suffering illness from the leak, Aurora Fire Rescue said. “Several people who were feeling sick” reported the issue just after 5 p.m. A total of seven people were assessed, with one transported to a hospital.

Fire officials later said the seven people were employees and “cooking equipment” caused the issue.

“The equipment has been shut down and is no longer causing a carbon monoxide problem,” Aurora Fire Rescue said Tuesday afternoon.

None of the patients were suffering from life-threatening illnesses.

By about 6 p.m., Aurora Fire Rescue firefighters were taking final air quality readings in the building. No further updates were expected on the incident, the department said.

PORT NECHES, Texas — More than three years after an explosion rocked the city of Port Neches, the U.S. Chemical Safety and Hazard Investigation Board (CSB) released its final report on the 2019 explosions and fires at the TPC Group Port Neches Operations facility Chemical Plant.
The initial explosion happened on November 27, 2019 just before 1 a.m.
Officials with the CSB said the incident occurred when a “piping section ruptured, releasing highly flammable butadiene that quickly ignited,” according to a CSB release. The pressure wave that resulted from it destroyed parts of the facility and injured two TPC employees and a security contractor.
The resulting blast was felt up to 30 miles away and damaged nearby homes and buildings. Process fluid that continued to leak from damaged equipment fueled fire that burned for more than a month.
“The incident at TPC was the result of a known safety hazard – popcorn polymer – that was poorly managed and controlled at the facility,” Steve Owners, chairperson for CSB said. “The result was a catastrophic incident that caused hundreds of millions of dollars in damage to the facility and nearby homes and businesses and resulted in a mandatory evacuation being ordered for everyone within a four-mile radius of the facility.”

An individual from the lab called Ottawa Fires Services (OFS) around 7:53 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 16, reporting the five people in the lab could smell propane and were experiencing symptoms of "watering eyes." The building was evacuated and the OFS Hazadous Materials (HazMat) team dispatched.

The HazMat team discovered elevated levels of carbon monoxide in the building, peaking at 30 part per million. An acceptable level of carbon monoxide is considered to be less than 25 parts per million as an average over an eight hour period, according to the Ontario regulation for occupational exposure limits.

A fire crew inspecting the roof found a faulty heating system to be the cause. The system was shut down and tagged for inspection.

MARENGO, Iowa (KCRG) - The Iowa Department of Natural Resources issued an emergency order to stop C6-Zero from operating in the state of Iowa after its plant in Marengo exploded and injured more than ten people last week.

The order said the facility is “a clear threat to public health and the environment” and another “catastrophic event” is possible because the department doesn’t know what flammable chemicals and gases remain inside the damaged building.

This emergency order also said large run-off pools of contaminated water are flowing into Iowa’s groundwater and the Iowa River, which the report said is a water source for Iowa City and other municipalities. It also said the state tried to regulate the facility multiple times over the last two years, including days before the explosion.

According to C6-Zero, the company has the ability to turn used roof shingles into oil, fiberglass and sand. The company said it creates oil from dipping the shingle into a solution than putting into a machine. According to this report, an employee for C6 Zero told Iowa DNR it expected to process 800 tons of shingles per day with a storage capacity of 2,400 tons of shingles.

The 49-year-old man was scarred, partially blinded and also suffered hearing damage in the blast at Gateshead's International Paint plant.
He had been making paint in a large mixing vessel, which involved the use of flammable liquids.
The firm admitted breaching health and safety laws and was fined at Newcastle Magistrates' Court.
The explosion happened as the employee was emptying resin pellets from a large bulk bag into the vessel which generated an electrostatic spark and ignited flammable vapour.
The man, from South Shields, spent eight days on life support.
An investigation by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) found the company failed to put sufficient measures in place to control the risk, including a correctly working extraction system.

The chlorine leak happened at Nemak around 2:30 a.m. Fire units responded with a hazmat team. They later discovered a leak from a chlorine tank within the factory.

Once a crew entered the chlorine room, they were met with chlorine vapors and liquid, according to a news release. Firefighters attempted to shut off the tank but were met with resistance from a combination of vapor and liquid. The tank was also frozen, which complicated the matter.

The fire crew entered the room a third time and secured a bracket and tank connection, said Glasgow Chief William Rock. The leak was stopped, and the room was secured. The ventilation system was in operation, but high levels of chlorine were still present inside the plant. Other doors and vents were opened to ventilate the structure.

Glasgow Fire returned care of the facility back to the plant manager. Fire officials said they would monitor and report any findings throughout the day.

Personnel was at the scene for about five hours. One employee at the facility was exposed to chlorine and was examined by EMS. It’s unclear if that person was injured.

Eight people became unwell on Wednesday due to a toxic substance released during work at the Moerdijk industrial estate in Noord-Brabant. They have all been taken to a hospital, one with severe injuries. The Midden- en West-Brabant Security Region initially reported five injuries but later adjusted that.

The incident was first reported to emergency services at 8:51 a.m. Multiple ambulances, the fire department, the police, and two trauma teams by helicopter responded to the scene.

The toxic substance was released during work on a storage tank belonging to the company GCA. Employees of the adjacent company, Stolthaven, were also affected by the leak. The security region doesn’t yet know what went wrong.

It concerns phosphorus trichloride - a colorless, fuming liquid used in making pesticides, among other things. Phosphorus trichloride can affect the eyes, skin, and respiratory tract, and those who inhale it can suffer from pulmonary edema. In the worst case, people could die from exposure.

The safety region could not yet say whether the substance was supposed to be in the GCA tank. The situation has now stabilized.

Two primary school students suffered serious burns to their face and chest and were taken to hospital after a science experiment conducted outdoors in high winds went wrong at a school on Sydney’s northern beaches.

They were among 11 students and one adult – believed to be their teacher – injured in the incident at Manly West public school about 1.20pm on Monday.

One of the students with serious burns was airlifted to Westmead children’s hospital while the other student was taken to that hospital by ambulance.

The nine other students were taken to the Royal North Shore and Northern Beaches hospitals. The adult was also admitted to hospital in a stable condition.

It is understood the year 5 students were taking part in a science demonstration to create a “black snake” or “sugar snake” with baking soda, a sugar mixture and an accelerant.

NSW Ambulance Acting Supt, Phil Templeman, said the wind had blown some materials around causing the injuries.

“We received multiple triple zero calls reporting that a number of children had sustained burns during a science experiment, which was being conducted outside,” he said.

“Today’s high winds have impacted the experiment and blown some of the materials around. The children have sustained burns to the upper body, chest, face and legs. Thankfully, the majority of the students were not badly injured.”

HYDERABAD: Officials of Kasturba Gandhi Junior College for Women said that the incident of a gas emission on Friday took place near a garbage dump outside the college premises and requested authorities to move the dump to avoid a repeat of such incidents.

On Friday, students of classrooms 204 and 205 smelt a pungent gas from outside their window around 1.30 pm, when they were returning for the post-lunch session.

A college official said that around 30 students who were exposed to the fumes started feeling dizzy and nauseated, following which they evacuated all students and admitted those affected to a nearby hospital.

College officials said that they had noticed GHMC sanitation workers break a chemical bottle while clearing garbage from the dump, following which two workers at the spot started vomiting and the fumes started spreading to the college.

The authorities concerned were also informed.

“Government departments (police, clues team, fire and medical service) came to the college and did a complete inspection of the whole building, including checking of CCTV footage. They did not find any cause for the smell or lapse in safety measures in the college. It was later identified that the cause for the gas fumes was coming from outside the garbage dump adjacent to the college compound wall,” a college official said.

Firefighters responding to a medium-level hazardous materials call evacuated an industrial laundromat after a worker moving drums of chemicals within the facility spilled four different cleaning chemicals totaling about 30 gallons, causing a chemical reaction, Niles Fire Chief Marty Feld said.

Firefighters were dispatched to 6977 N. Austin Ave. at 2:53 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 15. Arriving firefighters found the worker moving the chemicals had spilled some of those fluids on his pants, which Feld said irritated the man’s skin. Feld said after consulting material data sheets on the chemicals, water was applied to the worker’s legs to stop the chemical burn. The chief said the worker did not require transportation to an area hospital.

An absorbent material was applied to the liquids on the concrete floor caused by the spill. Feld said the material was used to soak up the chemicals and prevent them from going down any drains. The building was ventilated to remove any lingering vapors.

WEST BARNSTABLE — YMCA Cape Cod has reopened its aquatic center, several weeks after chemical exposure injured seven children in October.

On Wednesday the pool reopened to all aquatics programming, including swim lessons, aqua fitness, and lap swimming. And all seven children injured in the chemical exposure, returned to YMCA classes and activities, said Stacie Peugh, chief executive officer of YMCA Cape Cod.

"We were collectively devastated by this accident at our pool. The impact on all board and staff was, and is very significant," said Peugh in an email. "Our first priority is the health and safety of the children in our care. We at the Y wish to convey our most heartfelt concern for all impacted by this incident."

On Oct. 7, the YMCA added granular chlorine, and later muriatic acid into the pool’s filtration system, rather than directly into the pool. The pool was not closed, and the granular chlorine was not diluted before being added to the filtration system.

GAITHERSBURG, Md. — At least 12 people have been injured after a condominium in Gaithersburg, Maryland, exploded and caught fire Wednesday.

According to WBAL, Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service spokesman Pete Piringer said that a fire and explosion were reported just before 9 a.m. at the Potomac Oaks condominium complex Wednesday. The fire became a second alarm after crews arrived to heavy flames at the scene.

Piringer said, according to WBAL, that 12 people were injured. 10 people were taken to the hospital. Two of the 10 were taken to a trauma center. The other eight were four adults and four children who had mild to moderate injuries. Two others were treated at the scene and were not taken to the hospital.

People had reported to investigators at the scene that they smelled gas Wednesday morning, but Montgomery County Fire Chief Scott Goldstein said, according to The Associated Press, that no one called 911 to report a gas leak before the explosion. The last gas-related call about one of the affected buildings happened at the end of September, Goldstein said.

The Montgomery County Council released a statement following the fire and explosion, saying that over 100 firefighters and first responders responded to the condominium complex.

It happened about 6 p.m. at Farmers Select Dairy at 7321 N. Loop and is impacting the nearby El Paso Community College Valle Verde campus.

One person was transported to the hospital.

The community college issued a shelter in place order and then decided to evacuate the Valle Verde campus as much as possible.

Deputy Fire Chief Rick Carson said a few people had to be evacuated and firefighters are working with maintenance crews at the diary to completely shut off the leak.

“It is an ongoing situation,” he said. “You can still smell a few pockets of ammonia, which is to be expected.”

Fire officials are urging residents near the leak to shelter in place, turn off their heating and cooling systems temporarily and close windows and doors.

Temporary shelter is available at North Loop and Hawkins, if needed.

SAVANNAH, Ga. -- Residents were being allowed to return home Monday night after firefighters made progress battling a massive blaze at a chemical plant in Georgia, fire officials said.

At a Monday evening briefing, Glynn County Commission Chairman Wayne Neal said the evacuation orders were being lifted.

“At this point we think everything is under control and contained,” Neal said.

An estimated 100 households were ordered to evacuate Monday morning within a 1-mile radius of the Symrise chemical plant, mostly because of potential smoke hazards. There had also been explosions at the site.

Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Capt. Eric Prosswimmer said firefighters had extinguished most of the blaze, but planned to put another layer of foam on the site Monday evening. The state fire marshal's office will investigate where the fire started, he said.

Emergency responders safely evacuated a handful of employees working when the fire broke out about 4 a.m. at the plant outside the port city of Brunswick, said Prosswimmer, who was on the scene with his fire crews from Jacksonville, Florida, sent to help battle the flames.

The fire sent a large plume of thick smoke into the air from the plant about 70 miles (113 kilometers) south of Savannah. The smoke died down for a few hours late Monday morning, then flared up again for a short period in the afternoon — forcing firefighters to back away until it subsided.

Prosswimmer said heat from the fire had caused three metal tanks containing chemicals to explode. Fighting the blaze was further complicated when firefighters depleted more than 1 million gallons (3.8 million liters) of water stored in tanks on the site. Tanker trucks filled with water were brought to the scene, where firefighters also used foam to battle the flames.

Prosswimmer said one firefighter suffering from exhaustion had been taken to a hospital and was in stable condition. There were no other injuries.

The plant is operated by Symrise, a German company that produces fragrances, flavoring and other ingredients for foods and cosmetics. The Georgia plant manufactures fragrance ingredients used in perfumes, detergents and household cleaners, Smyrise spokesperson Christina Witter said.

Chief Scott Van Why of the Hanover Township Volunteer Fire Department told The (Allentown) Morning Call on Sunday that tests of the air turned up nothing to explain what affected 48 children and adults Friday at Lehigh Valley Academy Regional Charter School.

Emergency responders were sent to the school after nearly a dozen people were reported sick in one of the three buildings. Officials said that building, which houses seventh- through twelfth-grade students, was evacuated “out of an abundance of caution,” but normal operations continued at other buildings where younger students are taught.

Susan Mauser, CEO of the Lehigh Valley Academy Regional Charter School, said most of those taken to hospitals for evaluation had been released as of Friday night, LehighValleyLive.com reported.

Firefighters quickly knocked down the small blaze ignited by the mineral — a water reactive material — after it got wet and started the combustion process, said Acting Deputy Fire Chief Adam Roche.

During the combustion process, Roche said, there was a release of hydrogen cyanide, prompting a Tier 1 hazmat incident that was ultimately canceled.

The building, plant No. 8, was evacuated and several employees and a firefighter underwent decontamination.

Cris Abraham, 36, was among four people inside a utility room on Monday when carbon dioxide was suddenly released from the fire suppression system, displacing oxygen in the room.

The odorless gas caused the husband and father of two to go into cardiac arrest. Firefighters arrived wearing protective gear, got him to safety and performed CPR. He was hospitalized in critical condition.

Three other people who had been in the room at the time were able to evacuate safely.

It's not clear yet what triggered the discharge of carbon dioxide, as there were no indications of a fire.

Two employees drove themselves to a nearby hospital to be treated for possible exposure to Anatox and Lysine. One of those employees was on-site when the chemical leak happened, according to the Barron County Sheriff's Office.

The leak of the two chemicals resulted in the emission of a poisonous vapor in the atmosphere of the building. No other injuries were reported.

The leak was first reported to the sheriff's office at 9:27 a.m. in its main plant feed mill area. Emergency responders determined the chemicals accidentally mixed together, putting the toxic fumes into the air.

The company immediately evacuated the facility, police say.

The shelter-in-place was enacted on the north side of the plant, impacting the Barron County Highway Department and the Riverview Terrace Estates. A "precautionary shelter-in-place" was also put in place on the south side of the plant, shutting down a portion of Hwy 8 to LaSalle Avenue, starting at 6th Street and extending to 11th Street.

At least four people have been sickened, including one who is in “critical condition,” after a carbon dioxide leak at Los Angeles International Airport Monday morning.

The incident was reported around 7 a.m. in the Terminal 8 baggage area, according to a Los Angeles Fire Department news alert.

The leak apparently occurred after a popping sound was heard inside a small utility room at the airport. The four patients were all workers who were in or near the room.

The utility room is equipped with a carbon dioxide fire suppression system that is designed to extinguish a fire without damaging the electrical equipment inside, LAFD Capt. Erik Scott said during a morning news conference.

Three patients, described as two men and a woman, were treated at the scene for minor complaints.

The fourth patient, said to be a man in his 50s, was found pulseless and not breathing inside the utility room, according to the fire department.

“The carbon dioxide displaces the oxygen in the individual’s blood stream and they went into cardiac arrest,” Scott said. He described the Carbon Dioxide as colorless, odorless and tasteless.

The worker was given CPR right away by airport police. “The good news is that individual had a return of spontaneous circulation. What that means, they’re breathing. Their blood is pumping on their own now,” Scott said.

Three students and a teacher were treated for burns after a chemistry lab fire Oct. 12 at Dinwiddie High School in Virginia. One of the students was hospitalized for 2 weeks. The incident involved a classroom demonstration using methanol, according to the US Chemical Safety and Hazard Investigation Board (CSB), which is again promoting its classroom safety guidance.
The fire was far from the first caused by methanol in school science classes. Typically, such fires stem from demonstrations that involve burning a flammable liquid, usually methanol, according to the CSB. In some cases, after a demonstration has started, methanol from bulk containers is poured directly onto flames, then a flashback into the container ignites the rest of the fuel. The resulting fire can injure people as far as 4.5 m away.
When three serious accidents occurred over 8 weeks in 2014, the CSB issued a safety bulletin.
The bulletin provides four key lessons: do not use bulk containers of flammable chemicals when small quantities are sufficient; implement strict safety controls when handling hazardous chemicals; conduct a comprehensive hazard review of demonstration protocols; and provide a safety barrier between the demonstration and audience.
While demonstrations involving flammable chemicals can be important teaching tools, “they must be done safely,” CSB interim head Steve Owens says in a statement. “We urge school administrators and teachers to review and follow the CSB’s safety lessons for these kinds of demonstrations so that no one is harmed by these preventable accidents.”

Around two dozen workers were in the factory when the blaze broke out at 2.07 pm, the time fire and emergency services department of the municipal corporation (MC) received the call. All the workers were pulled out safely. One worker received minor burn injuries. He was taken to Government Medical College and Hospital, Sector 32.
A hydraulic vehicle, fire tenders and water boozer were rushed to douse the flames. But the intensity of the fire forced the MC to take the help of fire tenders of Mohali, Panchkula and 3 BRD Air Force station. Over dozen fire tenders made multiple rounds while 40 to 50 firemen were on the job. The operation was continuing till the filing of this report late in the night. The exact reason of the fire could not be ascertained.
Sources said a huge amount of liquor and chemicals were stored in the factory, helping to spread and strengthen the fire that made things difficult for the firemen. Since the fire covered the entire factory from all the sides, JCB machines were called to break some temporary tin sheds and other parts of the factory to ensure water reached the building in high pressure in order to control the blaze. All material like drums, articles and other wooden and plastic items were gutted. Luckily, the fire did not spread to adjoining building and factories.

A science experiment of Grade 7 students at Awao National High School in Davao led to a fire accident with three students suffering from third-degree burns.

In Sunday's episode of "Kapuso Mo, Jessica Soho," student Bemboy Montanez narrated how the fire started during their class' experiment session.

("Salt was put in the water, sir mixed it. He took the bottle then he put some alcohol in the stove, then it exploded.")

As soon as the fire started, he said that his teacher went to him and hugged him.

("Our clothes caught on fire, sir approached me and hugged me.")

Aside from Bemboy, another student, Edwin Rebleza Jr., had the worst injuries from the accident. His face, neck, arms, hands, chest, and tummy were all scalded.

("I was in front and two of my classmates were beside me. I rolled on the ground and caused the chair to fall because the fire was spreading on my clothes.")

Edwin pleaded to hospital staff to be gentle with him during his treatment due to the pain caused by the third-degree burn.

According to one of Edwin's classmates, Cyril, Edwin sprayed alcohol on his uniform during the experiment because he wanted to smell good.

When Edwin was asked if he thought the alcohol caused the malfunction of the experiment, the seventh grader admitted that he had no idea.

("I don't know. When I moved away, I stepped back slightly. The fire spread suddenly on my face.")

Prof. Laurenzo Alba, a chemist professor at De La Salle University, said that the experiment they were trying to do was possibly to vaporize the salt solution.

("It is to demontrate that salt gets left behind when water becomes water vapor by boiling.")

The chemist also added that ethyl alcohol and isopropyl alcohol, two of the most common ingredients in a science lab, are flammable.
