BOISE, Idaho — The Boise Police Department "completed their evaluation and containment" of a chemical spill that injured 28 people with at least 14 of them taken to the hospital near the Fairmont Park pool.
Boise Fire Division Chief Paul Roberts told KTVB the spill occurred in one of the maintenance buildings near the pool. Hazmat crews were dispatched to the area at around 1 p.m. on Friday and are currently on the scene. Roberts suspects the spill occurred about five minutes before crews were sent out.

A Code Red was initiated and crews were on scene for the next several hours until the spill was neutralized. Residents in the area were told to shelter in place, but that order has since been lifted.
Roberts said a commercial truck that was filling chemical tanks for the pool was in the area at the time of the spill. It is currently not known what chemicals were spilled, but Roberts said the five people admitted to the hospital do not have life-threatening injuries.
"A hazmat team is doing their homework and research to establish exactly what these chemicals are and hazards associated with those chemicals," Roberts told KTVB. "Once that’s determined, the hazmat team will donate the appropriate clothing to protect them to go in and further mitigate it, contain it and neutralize it so we can open the area back up."

It happened Monday morning at CRC Chrome, located on Pratt Street.

DEEP said hazmat crews responded to a reported acid gas release at a company on Pratt Street in Meriden June 21.
WFSB
The Dept. of Energy and Environmental Protection said employees had dumped lacquer into a heated rinse tank when it caused a reaction that flashed over the sides of the tank.

This injured two employees, and cause the roof to catch fire.

The two employees were taken to Bridgeport Hospital, but their condition is unknown at this time.

Just before 1 p.m. on Monday, Meriden Fire Chief Ken Morgan said crews were still battling the fire inside the building, which had reached three alarms. While the fire was contained, it was not under control at that time.

Organophosphate is used in agriculture, home, gardens, and veterinary practice, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Three hospital staff were exposed to the chemical and suffered minor symptoms, Hughes said.

Once the Hazmat team and other fire units arrived, they were told hospital staff had already taken action. Those actions included the decontamination, isolation, and treatment of the patient and the isolation and treatment for the exposed emergency department staff.

Safework NSW has issued an urgent safety warning after a worker at a public swimming pool in Picton incorrectly mixed chemicals, releasing toxic chlorine gas and injuring several swimming pool patrons.

Preliminary findings indicate the two chemicals were a chlorine-releasing salt called dry chlorine and sodium bisulphate.

For safe results, each chemical should be released in opposite ends of the pool.

However, it appears both chemicals were released in the same area, which resulted in a chemical reaction.

Better Regulation Division Deputy Secretary, Rose Webb said with the temperature rising and more families visiting their local pool, it’s timely to remind workers that pool chemicals can cause reactions if mixed incorrectly.

Three people including two Detroit police officers were rushed to the hospital because of fumes.

"We were scared, we got dressed and we were ready to go," said Charmaine Ford. "Especially when we saw it was a HAZMAT 2 situation."

At about 9 a.m. Monday there was an explosion at Intrastate Distributors right across the street from Ford's house on Exeter Street near State Fair on Detroit's east side.

"It's a distribution company, so you have dry products that come in and then transfer those products from one location to another location," said Lt. Clarence Watts, Detroit Fire Department.

One of those products is Towne Club Soda. The burst pipe caused ammonia to leak at high levels and employees were evacuated.

Two Detroit policers and a 57-year-old male employee taken to an area hospital due to fumes.

By late Thursday, the smoky fire was out at Wisconsin's only refinery, but residents around the plant who had been evacuated during the day were not expected to be let back to their homes until very late this evening, the Associated Press said.

Thick clouds of black smoke billowed from the Husky Energy refinery, forcing people to leave their homes and three schools to evacuate, along with a nearby hospital. The plant produces gasoline and asphalt.

The city of Superior is located on its namesake Great Lake, and shares a shipping port with neighboring Duluth, Minn., the AP said. Freighter fans today were posting pictures to social media of large ships being loaded with cargo while the refinery fire burned in the background.

CORVALLIS, Ore. (AP) — Authorities say two people were injured in an explosion at the HP Inc. campus in Corvallis.

The Gazette-Times reports that firefighters responded at about 3:30 p.m. Thursday to reports of an explosion on the high-tech campus.

Corvallis Fire Department spokesman Jim Patton says a hydrogen generator exploded inside a laboratory. He did not know what caused the generator to explode.

Patton says the damage was contained to the room where the explosion occurred. He says there was no fire and no toxic or unsafe materials were released.

Patton says paramedics took two people to Good Samaritan Regional Medical Center.

No information was immediately available on their identities or the extent of their injuries.

Three students were sent to hospital when a battery exploded during an experiment in the laboratory of a Tseung Kwan O secondary school yesterday.

The lithium battery caught fire in the laboratory at HHCKLA Buddhist Ching Kok Secondary School yesterday morning, prompting the teacher and students to flee.

The school called the police and firemen, who extinguished the fire. However, three boys felt ill after inhaling the smoke and were sent to hospital.

Firemen said the cause of the fire was not suspicious.

Last month, lithium batteries stored in a container in a Yuen Long car park caught fire after short-circuiting, resulting in five cars being damaged. More than 20 people were moved out and no one was injured.

The University of Hong Kong's chair of power electronics, Ron Hui Shu-yuen, said a battery is likely to explode after short-circuiting. He said a short-circuit occurs when metals are placed near the positive and negative conductors of a battery, which induces a high current that delivers a large amount of heat and subsequently causes an explosion.

The last batch of students of the Osun State University, who collapsed and were hospitalised after inhaling poisonous leakage from a fire extinguisher inside a crowded lecture room, has been discharged from the hospital.

A student of the university told our correspondent on Monday, on condition of anonymity, that the last batch of students injured during the accident was discharged from the hospital on Sunday.

The student, however, appealed to the university authorities to ensure that lecture rooms were spacious enough to accommodate a large number of undergraduates.

The student said, “All the students that were admitted to the hospital because of the fire extinguisher accident have been discharged as of Sunday.

“I thank God that none of them died, but the university authorities have to make sure that students are no longer taught in crowded classrooms just to prevent this kind of incident. They should ensure that there are lecture rooms which can accommodate a large number of students conveniently in the interest of students and the lecturers.”

The Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academics), Prof. Clement Adebooye, in a telephone interview with our correspondent, confirmed that the students were all discharged from the hospital.

Adebooye said, “All of them have been discharged. We thank God that nothing bad happened to any of them. They are all in a good condition now. The university acted promptly and we are happy that they are all alive and well.”

It would be recalled that students of the Anatomy/ Physiology Department were receiving a lecture inside a crowded lecture room when the fire extinguisher inside the classroom started to leak.

One of the students was said to have sat on the fire extinguisher and the safety valve was accidentally released when he stood up causing the leakage.

The leaked poisonous gas inhaled by the students caused many of them to slump and over 20 of the students, who became unconscious as a result of the leakage, were rushed to a hospital where they were treated and eventually discharged.

The first explosion occurred at about 10:19am local time Monday at the Verla International cosmetics factory in New Windsor, 55 miles north of New York City.

Firefighters were responding to the scene when a second explosion occurred half an hour after the first, injuring seven and causing two firefighters to be transported to Westchester Medical Center for burns, according to Brendan Casey, Orange County commissioner of Emergency Services, during an afternoon press briefing.

Video from the scene showed thick, black smoke spewing from a section of the roof in the sprawling facility, which includes manufacturing and warehouse buildings.

Workers milled about in a parking lot while fire crews looked on. There was no word on what caused the fire.

Among the more than 30 people injured, 15 were Verla employees. The injured either made their own way to hospitals or were brought in by ambulance. None of the injuries were life-threatening, officials said. Among the injuries were burns, smoke inhalation, and falls when the explosion happened.

HOUSTON, July 13 (Reuters) - Exxon Mobil Corp has been fined about $165,000 by U.S. regulators for safety lapses including inadequate training and equipment maintenance over an explosion that injured four workers at an aging Baton Rouge, Louisiana, refinery last year.

The U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) issued nine citations, several of which echo previous cautions by federal agencies at two other Exxon plants. The citations, issued in May, were seen by Reuters this month.

A separate investigation by the U.S. Chemical Safety Board (CSB) is ongoing and its report on the incident is due by year-end.

Exxon said it is contesting the OSHA citations and fines.

The facility was faulted five years ago by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for failing to address corrosion on pipes and valves and for inadequate shutdown and emergency procedures provided to workers.

The Nov. 22, 2016 explosion on a sulfuric-acid alkylation unit that makes octane-boosting components of gasoline in the sprawling Baton Rouge refinery and chemical plant injured four workers, two of them severely. Two of the affected workers declined to comment; others could not be reached.

A worker on the alkylation unit removed the cover of a malfunctioning valve on an isobutane line and used a wrench to turn the value stem, Exxon reported to the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality in a letter. Volatile isobutane is converted in the alkylation unit to a component of gasoline.

As the operator turned the valve stem, portions of the valve fell out, releasing isobutane, according to the Exxon letter, which was ignited by a welding machine 70 feet away.

One worker was knocked off a scaffold next to the alkylation unit and left dangling over the fire, according to two sources. Another worker was burned over most of her body.

They want to know if the air quality is OK for them to breathe.

The cause of the fire was determined to be an electrical issue in a truck parked in one of the two bays at Station 26.
Now, the walls of that bay are completely down and a fresh coat of paint has been applied to the outside and inside. Cleaning crews were still polishing the floors on Tuesday.

Firefighters have been working there during and since the blaze, but were sent to sleep at two other stations while their building was cleaned and refurbished.

After the living quarters were fixed up, staff were brought back. Then, two fire fighters complained of headaches and weakness. The living area was put in limited use while staff went back to sleeping elsewhere.

The leak was reported about 11:30 p.m. Monday night at Fresh Express in the 1100 block of East Lake Street. When firefighters arrived, building employees said the leak was coming from the refrigeration system and several workers were complaining of having difficulty breathing.

The emergency call was elevated to a hazardous material incident, which brought additional firefighters and technicians from other fire departments, with large fans used to remove the fumes from the structure.

Five employees were taken to St. Alexius Medical Center in Hoffman Estates for treatment. Their condition was not known Tuesday afternoon. Two firefighters who were exposed to vapors also were transported and later released, officials said.

FALLS — Five students who had just finished swim class at Pennsbury High School Tuesday suffered respiratory issues.

The school nurse was called to the pool house for possible chemical exposure at about 2 p.m., according to the district's website. The building immediately was evacuated.

School officials said 21 students had participated in the class, but only five complained of respiratory issues. The five students were taken by ambulance to area hospitals to be examined. Four of the students were taken to Aria Health Bucks County in Falls and one to St. Mary Medical Center in Middletown, said Falls Fire Marshal Richard Dippolito.

The parents of the 21 students were notified by school officials.

Dippolito said the incident occurred after a pool maintenance man cleaned a filtering system for the pool.

Dippolito theorizes that some cleaning acid might have been left in a "pit" under a floor and reacted with chlorine, creating a chlorine cloud, which is not visible.

The incident remains under investigation to determine what chemicals came in contact with the students.

Toronto Police say 17 students were participating in the experiment just after 3 p.m. in the parking lot outside Royal Crown Academic School on Bayview Ave., south of Finch Ave. E., when a liquid similar to a drain cleaner splashed onto some of the youth.

“It looks like a little bit of the chemical they were using became airborne,” Toronto Police Staff-Sgt. Michael Butt said at the private school.

There was some confusion in the immediate aftermath of the incident because police only learned about it when the kids — three girls and one boy — showed up at North York General Hospital with their teacher.

Initial reports suggested there had been a chemical explosion, which sent cops and Toronto Fire crews — including a hazardous material team — racing to both the school and the hospital.

However, Butt made it clear there was no explosion.

He said it appears the class made “a bottle bomb or bottle rocket.”

“It looks like they used some kind of drain cleaner or Drano,” he said. “It was put in a water bottle and I guess it expanded within the bottle.”

Butt said under pressure, the liquid expanded and caused the bottle to spin around.

Hazmat crews were called to a Northland church Thursday afternoon where one employee suffered respiratory issues.

A pastor at Gashland Baptist Church, 601 Northeast Barry Road, told KCTV5 News that crews were at the church investigating.

Paramedics checked out the employee who accidentally discharged the chloropicrin, which is a substance similar to tear gas. The woman needed to have her eyes flushed out and suffered respiratory issues.

The material was stored in the decades-old safe as a theft deterrent. The employee accidentally bumped something, which caused the substance to be released into the air.

Firefighters worked with church officials to clean up the safe and air out the church.

A train derailment in Baltimore ignited a hazardous chemical reaction that caused an explosion, officials say.

Following the May 28, 2013 collision with a garbage truck, the train derailed, CSX Transportation officials say. Sodium chlorate in one of the train’s cars triggered a chemical explosion with terephthalic acid in another of the train’s cars.

Sodium chlorate is used mainly as a bleaching agent in paper production.

The National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Railroad Administration continue to investigate the derailment.

The garbage truck driver was seriously injured in the crash, officials say. No other injuries were reported.

MILLBURY — A dozen people, mostly rescue workers, were taken to the hospital after a hazardous chemical spill yesterday at Barrday Composite Solutions, 86 Providence Road (Route 122A).

Nobody was seriously hurt, and the spill was contained with only a small amount getting into the ground, officials said. They said the public was never at risk.

“The situation is very much under control. The leak has stopped. There were very minor injuries,” Millbury Fire Chief Matthew R. Belsito said around 6 last night. “It is my understanding at this time that everyone was transported as precautionary and they will probably be treated and released.”

About 1:35 p.m. yesterday, the town’s 911 dispatcher received a call saying a Barrday worker had been doused with the chemical phenol, Chief Belsito said.

Michael E. Buck, president of the company, said a company engineer was working on an outside storage tank containing about 10,000 gallons of phenol when the accident occurred. When the worker removed a wire, the tank sprung a leak and liquid phenolic resin sprayed onto the worker’s arm, he said. Mr. Buck said the engineer and a second employee who was having trouble breathing were taken to a hospital for treatment.

When he arrived at the scene shortly after the initial call, Chief Belsito said, he immediately called Worcester Special Operations and summoned the state’s hazardous materials teams. He said the source of the leak was an approximately three-fourths-inch hole in the piping connected to the tank.

Andrew Delisio, the hazmat technician team leader on the site, estimated 5,000 to 6,000 gallons of phenol escaped.

“At no time was the public in any danger,” Chief Belsito said.

Fire officials say a pool worker at the Renaissance Condo Complex accidentally poured bleach into a container already containing acid. Firefighters quickly closed off the area, and people already in the complex were told to stay inside their homes for a time.

Investigators say the worker did inhale some of the fumes and was taken to the hospital, but was able to tell emergency crews what happened. No one else was hurt.

The explosion happened about 10:30 a.m. in Building One at the facility, located at 1400 Fountaingrove Parkway. It occurred in a ground-floor laboratory, in an area where integrated circuits are made using molecular beam epitaxy, said Jeff Weber, spokesman for Santa Clara-based Agilent.
The explosion injured two employees, a man who was taken to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital with critical injuries and a woman with minor injuries who was later taken by private car to Kaiser Hospital, Weber said.
The man was cleaning a machine when there was a chemical flash, Weber said. He said cleaning the machine generally involves wearing a protective body suit, but he did not know whether the man was wearing one Tuesday morning.
The woman, a contract employee from Volt, was injured when something fell and hit her on the head outside the laboratory, he said.

Five ambulances, a Cranbourne CFA unit and a Hazmat response vehicle from Dandenong CFA were called to Lawless Drive when about 10 residents were affected by the chilli fumes. The Hazmat unit was unable to detect the cause of the fumes because it was organic so a CFA crew was forced to rely on sniffing out the source.

Intensive care paramedic David Llewelyn said an ambulance arrived just before 10.30pm to treat two men who were coughing and having trouble breathing, and more ambulances arrived as the number of affected people grew.

"We had up to 10 people who were coughing and were dizzy and nauseated." He said the fumes reached houses up to 150 metres away.

"We decided to do a doorknock of other homes to make sure no one else had been overcome, while the CFA worked to find the source of the fumes. It emerged someone was roasting strong chillies in the backyard and that's what caused the fumes."

Nearly 20 firefighters, including the Alameda County Fire Hazardous Materials Team, responded to an 8:35 p.m. call from Matheson Tri-Gas Inc., at 6775 Central Ave., fire spokeswoman Aisha Knowles said.
Meanwhile, five employees were taken to an East Bay hospital as a precautionary measure and later released, Matheson spokesman Stephen Stroud said.
Stroud did not say what possible health threat prompted the employees to visit the hospital.
"We're still investigating that," Stroud said. "All I can say is there were no specific injuries at the site."
The county Hazmat team worked with Matheson personnel to identify the problem, a malfunctioning piece of equipment called a "scrubber," which cleans the air inside the facility, Alameda County fire Battalion Chief Terence Carey said.

About 40 people were evacuated from hotels near Auckland Airport last night after fumes from a pesticide, which has historically been used in chemical warfare, wafted through their windows from a neighbouring farm.

International guests at Kiwi International Hotel and the Airport Skyway Lodge on Kirkbride Rd, Mangere, started getting itchy eyes due to strong fumes in the air, Fire Service incident controller Grant Thompson said.

One neighbour told NZPA the sensation was similar to when you cut onions.

The Fire Service was called around 10pm and it was established the fumes were caused by a neighbouring strawberry farmer who had poured the soil fumigant chloropicrin on his paddock.

Mr Thompson said the chemical was treated with respect because it has been used in chemical warfare.

The odor most likely came from a gas-powered leaf blower that had been used by a gardener along the sidewalk in front of the science rooms, said Maurice Luque, spokesman for the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department.

One 15-year-old girl who reported trouble breathing was taken to a hospital by ambulance, Luque said. A second ambulance crew was brought in to evaluate other students claiming to have headaches and other symptoms of the fumes.

Your view Email Print Got a story?
Staff at a medical practice and the emergency services were praised for their quick actions after a farm worker triggered a major chemical alert.

The man walked into the East Harling Surgery, near Thetford, at about 11am today after coming into contact with a toxic pest-control substance.

Fears were raised that patients and staff at the practice had also been contaminated by the aluminium phosphide and 35 people were contained in the building.

The farm worker, who was complaining of respiratory problems and was taken to hospital for monitoring, was also isolated by medical staff.

Paramedics, fire crews from Thetford, East Harling, Attleborough, a chemical incident support unit from Sprowston and an NHS Hazardous Area Response Team from Cambridgeshire attended, which closed the main road through the village for more than two hours. The Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital was also placed on major incident standby.
