Jakarta, Nov 14 (SocialNews.XYZ) An oil refinery tank in Indonesia's Central Java province caught fire, prompting the evacuation of residents living around the facility was firefighters were battling the blaze, the country's state oil and gas firm PT Pertamina said.

The company ensured in a statement that the supplies of oil and liquefied petroleum gas for buyers were not disturbed by the accident, reports xinhua news agency.

The fire broke out in Cilacap district at about 7,20 p.m. on Saturday night, the statement said.

"The efforts to extinguish the fire are intensively being carried out, using high capacity foam monitors at the burned tank, and for the tanks located around it, water sprinkles are being used to cool them in a bid to prevent further spread of the fire," the statement said.

AN EXPLOSION, which occurred at 00:45 local time on 29 March at an Indonesian refinery, has seriously injured at least five people.

The incident erupted at a refinery tank, specifically a T-301 tank, at Pertamina’s Balongan refinery in the Indramayu District, West Java. Pertamina is Indonesia’s national energy company. Reports note that local residents described a strong smell of fuel in the air around the time of the incident.

The New York Times reports that three storage tanks caught fire and that nearly ten hours later crews were still working to extinguish the blaze and prevent it from spreading to a fourth tank. Fire services, along with Pertamina’s Health, Safety, Security, and Environment (HSSE) team were deployed to extinguish the blaze, according to Pertamina. The fire has not been reported extinguished but according to Agus Suprijanto, Pertamina’s Senior VP for Corporate Communications & Investor Relations, it had been localised to prevent spread to the surrounding area.

Pertamina initially reported that five residents in the area at the time of the explosion suffered burns and were taken to intensive care at a local hospital. It later said that there were six victims that had been referred to another hospital, and that their conditions were being evaluated by a team of doctors. News reports have added that a further 15 people received minor injuries and that authorities were trying to locate three others.

Around 1,000 local residents have been evacuated from the area and roadblocks have been put in place.

Jakarta (AsiaNews) - Two people are under investigation by the authorities for a deadly fire in an illegal lighter factory in the province of North Sumatera (east of Jakarta), which killed 30 people including 24 women and 6 children. The tragedy took place yesterday in Sambirejo, a village in the regency of Langkat, about 70km west of the provincial capital Medan.

Gen. Agus Andrianto, head of the provincial police, reported today that a man and a woman - identified as the owner and director of the illegal laboratory - are currently in a state of detention.

The flames broke out when a worker was checking the operation of a product. This exploded and the worker, in a panic, threw it on thousands of ready-to-pack lighters, triggering a massive explosion. The fire spread quickly, because most of the building structure was made of wood.

The victims trapped inside could not escape because the main door was locked. Binsar Naibaho, head of the local police, says: "Windows and entrances were walled up. We couldn't even see what had happened inside the factory. " Four people were saved because they were on their lunch break and they witnessed the drama from outside.

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The police revealed gas leak allegedly caused the explosion at Grand Wijaya Center complex, South Jakarta, on Thursday, July 12. The blast damaged a car, broke window glasses of five buildings in the area, and injured a person.

South Jakarta Police chief Sr. Comr. Indra Jafar suspected the gas leak came from a regulator of a 12-kilogram LPG canister. The gas kept leaking and filled the air up to the third floor of business and management consulting firm PT Provalindo Nusa’s building.

A spark from an electrical plug then triggered the explosion. “It allegedly triggered a big explosion,” said Indra at the scene on Thursday, July 12.

"I do not know exactly what caused it, suddenly the tanker was on fire, and the oil spill filled the river channel," said tugboat captain Sapri Eko, speaking to Indonesian outlet Tempo.

In a statement, Pertamina said that the fire broke out at the terminal's jetty #3. For safety, the affected pier is now shut down, but jetty #1 remains in operation. Pertamina staff worked to contain the blaze and successfully prevented it from affecting the rest of the terminal facility.

Pertamina spokesperson Yudy Nugraha told media that the fire will not affect the availability of fuel in South Kalimantan. The next fuel delivery is expected to arrive from a larger storage facility in Kotabaru today.

At least 47 people were killed and dozens others injured in a fireworks factory explosion near the Indonesian capital of Jakarta on Thursday. It was one of Indonesia's worst industrial disasters and is likely to cast a new spotlight on lax safety standards in the Southeast Asian country, where rules are often ignored or weakly enforced. Witnesses said a huge explosion was heard from the factory at about 10 a.m. and then smaller explosions echoed across the neighborhood as orange flames jumped from the building and a column of black smoke billowed from it. Another showed a body in a bag being taken away. "People were burnt so badly you couldn't see their faces". Police say the bodies of several women, including some suspected under-aged workers, were found piled up at the back of the factory. The police revised the death toll down to 46 from their earlier figure of 47, but said about 10 people remained unaccounted for. Police officers and rescuers inspect the site of an explosion at a firecracker factory in Tangerang, on the outskirt of Jakarta, Indonesia, on Thursday.

KUCHING: Fire destroyed SK Sungai Sugai in Pakan yesterday afternoon, making it the seventh school in the state to be partially turned into ashes since March this year.

The fire razed two wooden blocks of this 50-year-old boarding school, about 7km from Pakan town, and there was nothing the few teachers who were around to look after the 174 pupils staying in the dormitory could do.

Headmaster Rambli Jidi said the teachers could only watch helplessly as they did not have any fire-fighting equipment, not even fire extinguishers. All they could do was to call the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) in Sarikei and Bintangor for help. One of the affected blocks housed two classrooms – Primary 2 and Primary 3 – and they were completely ruined.

The other housed a remedial classroom, a Primary 1 classroom, a resource room, Islamic religious room, a library, staff room, general office, and headmaster’s office. It was 90 per cent wiped out. Up in smoke were library books, office documents, textbooks, computers, printers and other equipment.

Rambli said the fire was believed to have started from the Primary 3 classroom, and strong winds fanned the fire to spread rapidly in both blocks.

The incident could have been sparked by a short circuit as the school still depended on generators for electricity. No one was hurt as classroom ended about an hour earlier, the pupils were in their dormitory, and most of the teachers had gone home.

The Makassar Police said the explosion which occurred around 3:30 p.m. local time in a house at the residential complex killed two women; Romlah, 58, and Sina, 36. The victims’ house was destroyed by the explosion which also damaged 10 other houses, the police said.

Two people were injured in the incident and were rushed to a nearby hospital.

Makassar Police chief Sr. Comr. Fery Abraham said it was suspected that a homemade device used to catch fish had caused the explosion as local residents had reported a strong homemade-explosive smell following the incident.

He said that to confirm the cause of the explosion, the South Sulawesi Police’s Gegana bomb squad investigated the incident site and sent evidence materials to the National Police’s forensics laboratory in Makassar.

“From our preliminary investigations, the explosion was caused by a fish bomb, but we will wait for results of both forensic laboratory examination and autopsy of the two victims to confirm the cause of the explosion,” said Fery, adding the bodies of the two victims would be sent to Bhayangkara Police Hospital in Makassar for autopsy.

According to preliminary signs, the explosion, which took place on Sunday, was caused by Phosphine (PH3), an extremely toxic gas generally used in pesticide products, poured into a gutter in the west side of the building. On Sunday afternoon, officials at the DPRD and Central Java gubernatorial offices were shocked by a string of explosions in the west part of the compound. (JP/Ainur Rohmah)

Central Java Police chief Insp. Gen. Dwi Priyatno said that explosions at the Central Java Legislative Council (DPRD) building, on Sunday afternoon, were due to the negligence of workers assigned to fumigate the building.

He said the incident occurred due a failure to comply with the proper disposal of chemicals used in the fumigation process.

“The explosions were the result of negligence on behalf of the workers. There was no deliberate error in the incident,” said Priyatno on Monday.

Kapuk Raya No. 10, RT 01/03, Kapukmuara, Penjaringan, Tuesday (6/19). The fire broke out around 8 PM and it quickly enlarged due to there were many flammable materials in the warehouse. To extinguish the fire, 21 fire trucks of North Jakarta Fire and Disaster Handling Sub-Department were deployed to the scene.

“The fire was successfully put out an hour later at 9 PM. Firemen are still finding out the cause and amount of the loss in this incident,” stated Head of Operation Section for North Jakarta Fire and Disaster Handling Sub-Department, Nurdin Silalahi, Tuesday (6/19).

He disclosed that inside the warehouse there were lots of flammable materials in type of nitrite, which is the material to make the floor cleaner. To extinguish the fire, firemen had to use 15 tubes of light fire extinguisher containing dry chemical, since the fire would grow even bigger if using water.

“The fire is difficult to put out because it has been mixed with nitrite and other chemical materials. Luckily, the firemen successfully put out the fire by using 15 tubes of light fire extinguisher containing dry chemical,” explained Nurdin.

When putting out the fire, the firemen also had to use mask to protect them from smoke. “Even, lots of firemen’s shoes melted in this incident. Moreover, we’re also constrained to reach the scene due to traffic jam,” told Nurdin.

One of the fire-fighting methods of using a helicopter to spread foam was postponed due to the high level of difficulty, as officials said the method had to be 99.9 percent accurate since practically all the refinery is being considered a danger zone.
