The 1984 Bhopal disaster that exposed thousands in the Indian city to toxic methyl isocyanate has had long term, intergenerational effects on victims, a new study has found.

Researchers from the University of California, San Diego note that multiple studies have shown a broad spectrum of serious long term and chronic health effects for hundreds of thousands of survivors, including respiratory, neurological, musculoskeletal and endocrine problems. ‘These impacts may be the tip of the iceberg however, given that [methyl isocyanate] toxins affected groundwater and the reproductive health and other health outcomes of exposed women, factors suggesting that generations not exposed to the toxic gas directly may nevertheless suffer adverse health and social impacts of the [Bhopal disaster] event,’ the authors write.

Previous research has revealed that decades after the disaster, menstrual abnormalities and premature menopause are common problems among exposed women and their female offspring. Methyl isocyanate has also been shown to damage chromosomes – early clinical studies revealed signs of increased chromosomal aberrations.

The new study has found that the disaster affected people across a more widespread area than was previously thought. Up to around 100km from the site, as opposed to the 4.5km radius that was considered by public health officials and researchers after the disaster.

The researchers attempted to investigate long term, intergenerational impacts of the disaster using government data from the National Family Health Survey (NFHS)-4 and 1999 Indian Socio-economic Survey. They discovered that women pregnant at the time of the disaster were more likely to give birth to a boy who went on to have a disability that affected their employment 15 years later, and had higher rates of cancer and lower educational attainment over 30 years later. ‘These results indicate social costs stemming from the disaster that extend far beyond the mortality and morbidity experienced in the immediate aftermath,’ they note.

"At about 11:10 am, in a pharmaceutical lab, when a solvent was being loaded into a container, some short circuit occurred and the solvent exploded. There were 35 people working, and 7 were injured. The injured have been shifted to the hospital," ASP PSN Rao, Anakapalli told ANI.

Upon receiving information about the fire, police teams and fire tenders rushed to the site. The fire was caused due to a sudden reactor blast, according to the Superintendent of Police, Anakapalli Murali Krishna.
District Fire Officer, Lakshman Rao, said that eight fire tenders rushed to the spot and four more are on the way. The operation is still underway, as the fire is still not doused at the lab.

A recent British Medical Journal Open study revealed that 39 years after the Bhopal gas explosion, the devastating industrial disaster is still haunting future generations. Males who were exposed to the gas leak while they were still in the womb were more likely to have a disability that affected their employment and also, at a 27-fold higher risk of cancer.

The Bhopal gas explosion took place in December 1984 at a Union Carbide pesticide plant on the outskirts of the city due to a methyl isocyanate gas leak. The gas spread across a 7 kilometer radius around the pesticide plant. More than half a million people ended up breathing the toxic air-borne chemical that is used to produce the pesticide carbaryl. The leaked gas killed more than 30,000 people in that vicinity.

“There is a broad spectrum of serious long-term and chronic health consequences for hundreds of thousands of survivors, including children, manifesting across multiple systems including respiratory, neurological, musculoskeletal, ophthalmic, endocrine,” the researchers wrote.

Victims were instantly overwhelmed by gas, which left high concentrations of hydrogen sulfide in air

India’s National Disaster Response Force, the State Pollution Control Board and the police are all investigating the incident
As people were heading towards a milk vendor in Ludhiana, India, early in the morning of 30 April, highly toxic gas suddenly overwhelmed and killed 11 people, including two children, in the street and nearby houses. Four others were injured but have since recovered.

Preliminary investigations indicate that there was a high concentration of hydrogen sulfide in the air which smelled pungent and of rotten eggs. ‘There was no respiratory distress and the gas is suspected to contain neurotoxins,’ says Swati, a Sub Divisional Magistrate for Ludhiana, who is heading the magisterial inquiry.

The investigators from the National Disaster Response Force, the State Pollution Control Board and the Ludhiana police are investigating the exact cause and source, which remains unknown. The Punjab state police has also formed a five member special investigation team. The police have warned the pollution control officials that if they don’t help the police in finding the culprits, they too will be prosecuted.

Whether industrial chemicals were illegally dumped in the sewers is yet to be determined

‘We are checking sewage connectivity as well, but the concentration of hydrogen sulfide has to be very high to be able to kill instantly,’ says Swati, who uses a singular name. The circumstantial evidence indicates that those exposed to the gas, or mixture of gases, died almost immediately, she adds.

A major fire was averted at Punjabi University today morning. University authorities said an outbreak took place at the laboratory of the Department of Zoology and Environmental Sciences on the campus at 3.45 am.

They said the outbreak was controlled by security officers on the campus. VC Professor Arvind said the employees who were instrumental in dousing the flames will be honoured.

University security officer Gurtej Singh said the fire incident purportedly took place due to a short circuit at the lab on the ground floor of the building. The swift action of the employees saved the expensive equipment from being damaged.

The fire was brought under control and extinguished by 4.15 am.

According to reports, panic gripped the nearby residential areas after huge flames were seen leaping out of the factory premises.
However, there was no report of any casualties as employees were not present in the factory at the time of the incident. A short circuit is suspected to have caused the fire.
Six fire engines were battling for over three hours to douse the fire which started around 3 pm. Notably, firefighting personnel were trying to prevent the fire from spreading to three adjoining factories.

A day after a massive fire broke out inside the Jindal polyfilm factory located in Mundhegaon area of Nashik district, the blaze continued to ravage the factory on the second consecutive day on Monday as district fire brigade personnel tried to douse the flames in the face of highly inflammable chemicals smouldering inside the factory premises.
Nasik Municipal Corporation (NMC) fire department head Sanjay Bairagi said, “The fire is still on as there is a huge stock of chemical powder which is located deep inside the factory. It is located at a depth of 800 to 900 metres in the main premises which is causing major challenges for the firemen to reach the spot and douse all the flames. We had extinguished the fire yesterday itself but the chemicals which caught fire are causing the embers to reignite. Currently, we have three fire tenders and our entire staff present to monitor the live location.”
Fire brigade officials said that while a major portion of the fire had been brought under control, intermittent outbursts continued till Monday afternoon due to the volatility of the chemicals that caught fire. As the firemen stepped up efforts, the inferno was almost entirely brought under control but for the thick smoke that continued to billow from the facility till late evening Monday. As spraying water proved inadequate in the efforts to douse the fire, a mixture of foam and chemical powder was used to control the blaze.

MARGAO: On the eve of Christmas, the group of socially-conscious ‘Citizens of Margao and Fatorda’ held a protest condemning the government and the authorities concerned, including the Margao Municipality, Goa Waste Management Corporation and the Goa Pollution Control Board for dumping hazardous and poisonous material in the low-lying field near the District Court at Margao.
Armed with banners, the citizens questioned Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant as to whether dumping of hazardous waste was a part of the ‘Save the Soil’ Memorandum of Understanding signed with Sadguru's Isha Foundation.
Several protesters including Jose Maria Miranda, Candeth Castello, Anthony Gonsalves, Mahesh Naik and Zarina Da Cunha strongly criticised the authorities for their ‘don’t care a damn attitude’ towards public health.
In his talk, Mahesh Naik wanted to know why the Hon'ble High Court has failed to monitor the work undertaken by the MMC and GWMC, since it is being undertaken through a PIL writ petition.

On Friday, students of classrooms 204 and 205 smelt a pungent gas from outside their window around 1.30 pm, when they were returning for the post-lunch session.

A college official said that around 30 students who were exposed to the fumes started feeling dizzy and nauseated, following which they evacuated all students and admitted those affected to a nearby hospital.

College officials said that they had noticed GHMC sanitation workers break a chemical bottle while clearing garbage from the dump, following which two workers at the spot started vomiting and the fumes started spreading to the college.

The authorities concerned were also informed.

“Government departments (police, clues team, fire and medical service) came to the college and did a complete inspection of the whole building, including checking of CCTV footage. They did not find any cause for the smell or lapse in safety measures in the college. It was later identified that the cause for the gas fumes was coming from outside the garbage dump adjacent to the college compound wall,” a college official said.

Chandigarh: A massive fire tore through a liquor bottling plant in Industrial Area, Phase I, on Thursday.
Around two dozen workers were in the factory when the blaze broke out at 2.07 pm, the time fire and emergency services department of the municipal corporation (MC) received the call. All the workers were pulled out safely. One worker received minor burn injuries. He was taken to Government Medical College and Hospital, Sector 32.
A hydraulic vehicle, fire tenders and water boozer were rushed to douse the flames. But the intensity of the fire forced the MC to take the help of fire tenders of Mohali, Panchkula and 3 BRD Air Force station. Over dozen fire tenders made multiple rounds while 40 to 50 firemen were on the job. The operation was continuing till the filing of this report late in the night. The exact reason of the fire could not be ascertained.
Sources said a huge amount of liquor and chemicals were stored in the factory, helping to spread and strengthen the fire that made things difficult for the firemen. Since the fire covered the entire factory from all the sides, JCB machines were called to break some temporary tin sheds and other parts of the factory to ensure water reached the building in high pressure in order to control the blaze. All material like drums, articles and other wooden and plastic items were gutted. Luckily, the fire did not spread to adjoining building and factories.

Mumbai-based Awaaz Foundation has written to the police and Maharashtra government after a chemical test revealed the presence of highly toxic substances in firecrackers.

The NGO had on Thursday conducted separate tests to assess noise levels and presence of chemicals in firecrackers. The organisation along with the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) had tested noise levels of firecrackers and found that they all fell within the permissible decibel limit of 120, the foundation's convener Sumaira Abdulali said.

However, a test that the organisation conducted independently revealed the presence of toxic chemicals such as arsenic, sulphur, barium and chlorine in firecrackers, she said. "For the first time since we started testing in 2008 all crackers have fallen within permissible decibel limit of 120.

The maximum was 114 from a series of 10,000 crackers," Abdulali said. Awaaz Foundation analysed the chemical contents of commonly available firecrackers and found substances banned by the Supreme Court, including barium in several of them, she said. In 2021, the presence of barium was openly displayed on the packaging of firecrackers. However, this year, none of the boxes mentioned the presence of barium, she said.

The Indian chemicals industry was at US$ 178 billion in 2019 and in all likelihood cross US$ 300billion by 2025 registering a CAGR of 9.3%. The demand for chemicals (domestic consumption and export market) is expected to expand to 9% per annum by 2025. Thus chemical industry contribution to to India’s GDP by 2025 is slated to rise to US$ 300 billion .

The Process Industries in India are undergoing major changes, involving Large expansion of capacities & adoption of modern technologies namely, Artificial Intelligence (AI), Analytics, Deep Learning, Digital Imaging (with SaaS & other platforms) to achieve high performance level and long Asset life.

Along with safe operation of by process industries assume special significance as major incidents /catastrophic accidents in such units will result in major on-site and off-site disasters involving multiple fatalities & loss of properties as seen in Bhopal many decades back (1984) and recently in Visakhapatnam (2021).

In spite of bringing in specific legislations by countries, to prevent such catastrophic events, through various statutes such as CAPPR (Chemical Accident Prevention & Preparedness Rule) and Factories act in India, OSHA (Occupational Safety & Health Administration) & EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) RMP in US, Europe Regulation SEVESO III, Directive 2012/18/EU , COMAH 2015 (Control of Major Accident Hazards)in UK etc., the major accidents still keep on happening, India being no exception.

Prevention and mitigation of such disasters are only possible if the top management of these Process Industries, consider `Process Safety’ very seriously and get personally involved to imbibe a safety culture in all their sites and plants.

A spate of explosions and fires involving electric two-wheeled scooters in recent months has resulted in serious injuries and deaths in India. Similar incidents worldwide have prompted scrutiny of battery and charging technology used in such vehicles. These incidents have dampened public enthusiasm for electric two-wheelers – which are positioned as a significant element of India’s transition to sustainable transport – and for battery electric vehicles more generally.

A major fire broke out at a chemical manufacturing factory in Binola, Manesar, early on Saturday morning. Firefighters said that no one was injured in the incident as the factory was still closed. A few security guards who were on duty first alerted the police and the fire department. Officials suspect that a short circuit caused the fire.
At least 15 fire tenders were rushed to the spot from the IMT Manesar, Sector 29, Udyog Vihar, Bhim Nagar, Sector 37, Maruti Vihar and Pataudi fire stations, owing to the severity of the fire. Gulshan Kalra, deputy director, fire department (Gurugram), said that the rear end of the factory collapsed due to the fire but officers managed to save the front section. “It took at least six hours to bring the flames completely under control,” he said.
Fire officials said that they received the information about the fire at 4.57am. Only three tenders were sent to the spot initially, but other fire stations were soon alerted to send their tenders. Foam-based fire tenders had to be used as there were several types of chemicals and gas cylinders kept inside the factory, officials added. Several explosions also took place due to metallic containers containing chemicals and gas cylinders which were stored in the factory.

These include technical, physical, chemical, or biological hazards. We are reporting a laboratory accident involving acryloyl chloride (chemical hazard), its consequences, safety precautions, and the lesson learned from this incident.

Acryloyl chloride is a highly toxic and volatile liquid. After being accidentally exposed to acryloyl chloride, a victim experienced blackout, headache, dizziness, tiredness, nose bleeding, persistent burning of the eyes, and intense nausea and vomiting. A victim reported two distinct hazardous effects, namely, nose bleeding and stomach ulcers, which were not mentioned in the SDS of acryloyl chloride. To avoid further exacerbation of consequences of acryloyl chloride accident, it may be preferable to initiate steroidal therapy along with symptomatic treatment from the start. The accidental consequences and lessons learned from this tragedy will serve as guiding factors for research scholars, postdoctoral fellows, principal investigators (PI), safety professionals, institutions, occupational health nurses, physicians, and toxicologists to prevent anything similar from happening again in the future.

MADIKERI: Panic spread across Siddapura and Virajpet in Kodagu on Tuesday morning as many residents developed a sudden cough and burning sensation in the eyes. Several rushed to the hospital to get treated even as social media was filled with caution messages asking locals to wear masks. The town roads were stained red and residents suspected a chemical spill from a truck as the cause. The situation turned bizarre after it was found that a chilli sauce leak had led to all the panic!

“We received panic calls after many residents developed symptoms of cough across Siddapura and Virajpet towns. Six students of a private college rushed to the hospital following the cough symptoms and they were treated,” confirmed Dr Venkatesh, DHO.

Following the calls, health and family welfare department officials rushed to the spot. They noticed a red liquid spread across the road and it was found that a truck travelling to Kerala had caused the leak. The check post staff at Makutta (on the Kodagu-Kerala border) was alerted and the truck that caused the leak was stopped. It was after an inspection of the truck that the officials realised that the red liquid was chilli sauce extracted from Byadgi chilli.

Investigations revealed that the truck was loaded with over 20 barrels filled with Byadgi chilli sauce extracted at a factory in Davanagere. This was to be transported to Ernakulam and the truck driver took the route via Kodagu to reach Kerala.

“Near Nellihudikeri, the truck went off the road to give space to a private bus. It is suspected that this damaged a couple of barrels placed inside the truck and caused the leakage,” confirmed Ravikumar, Madikeri Rural Police Station SI. After residents complained about the suspected chemical leak, the truck was stopped at Makutta checkpost.

“All the required vehicle and transport documents are intact. However, as public inconvenience was caused, the truck has been seized. A case of public nuisance has been registered and an FIR has been lodged,” confirmed Ravikumar. Meanwhile, the health department has collected the sample of the sauce, which will be sent for testing at a lab in Mysuru.
