About 300 gallons of hydrochloric acid spilled onto the streets near South 102nd and J streets around 11:15 a.m., authorities said.

After arriving at the scene, crews dammed up the area and put down "soda ash" to help neutralize the spill, according to authorities.

A full evacuation of a commercial building was ordered following the chemical spill, a hazmat team told News Center 7 crews who responded to the scene.

One employee was reportedly “exposed” to the chemical, prompting medical units to respond.

An employee was transported to an area hospital, while another refused transport after being treated at the scene, Assistant Chief Eric Barhorst of Sidney Fire said.

Although the call came in as an industrial spill of hydrochloric acid, a preliminary investigation found that the chemical was a sodium metabisulfite solution, Barhorst continued.

Emergency responders were able to confirm that the product did not leak; however, there was an “active chemical reaction in the container,” Barhorst said. Firefighters and employees mitigated the situation with neutralizing material made to control the chemical.

Emergency responders were able to clear the chemical spill within about two hours.

It happened at the waste treatment facility at Momentive’s Waterford site.

They tell NewsChannel 13 that employees saw hydrochloric acid vapor coming from a tank being cleaned at around 12:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Four nearby homes were evacuated.

Less than an hour later, the source of the leak was secured, and the vapor was no longer visible.

No one was hurt, and the company says the incident shouldn’t impact manufacturing operations.

People who drove south-bound on the highway between 10.40am and 11am are now being urged by the Department of Fire and Emergency Services to wash their cars with water as soon as possible.

The truck was carrying drums filled with sodium hydroxide, hydrochloric acid and nitric acid.

PAULINA, La. — Crews are still working to clean up the estimated 20,000 gallons of hydrochloric acid that spilled from a rail car in St. James Parish Wednesday. The short-term impacts were clear— a low-hanging cloud of caustic vapor, more than a hundred homes evacuated, and the start of a lengthy cleanup effort.
At this point, the long-term impacts are less obvious.
A spokesman with the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality says the agency is focusing on cleanup for now and cannot speculate on long-term damage to the environment from the spill. He says the next step will be for crews to neutralize the acid, then the LDEQ will decide how much contaminated dirt to haul away from the site.
Hydrochloric acid is “aggressive,” according to Tulane Chemistry professor Dr. James Donahue. He says it will “basically kill any plants or animals it comes into significant contact with. Counterintuitively, that will likely make it easier to clean up.

PAULINA, La. — Authorities in southeast Louisiana’s St. James Parish allowed all but two families to return to their homes Thursday, a day after a train car derailment and hydrochloric acid leak forced the evacuation of 200 residences.
Parish President Pete Dufresne said cleanup — including excavation of soil — was required at two homes closest to the spill site.
Authorities had begun a street-by-street lifting of the evacuation hours earlier, beginning with houses farthest from the site, as workers inspected for contamination from the chemical leak. Hotel stays had been authorized for a second night for evacuated residents.
St. James Parish Sheriff Willy Martin said any affected homes would have to be washed with agents to neutralize the acid residue. Thursday afternoon, Martin told reporters that monitors were available to check inside homes for anyone who felt an inspection would be necessary. He said one property owner asked for a test of his well water.

YMCA Cape Cod has completed an investigation into the incident earlier this month that resulted in seven children being sent to the hospital after exposure to a noxious gas.

The YMCA had an outside investigation done by aquatic safety experts, who believe the noxious gas was created by an accidental mixture of muriatic acid and residual granular chlorine inside the filtration system of the pool, according to a statement about the incident.

The Y's automated chemical feeder system was not working properly, and management there said it was having trouble getting pool vendors to complete repairs. In the meantime, workers had to add chemicals to the pool manually when it was closed.

Workers put granular chlorine into the filtration system in the morning on Oct. 7, and later in the day, muriatic acid was added to the system, the Y said. The investigation found that the chlorine had not fully dissolved in the system, and noxious gas was released into the deep end of the pool when the two chemicals mixed. The seven children were swimming in the deep end.

They were having trouble breathing and were taken to the hospital to be evaluated.

A chemical spill at the THK Rhythm automotive facility sent 23 workers to the St. Catharines General Hospital on Tuesday, Sept. 27, with three workers having been directly exposed to hydrochloric acid.

According to St. Catharines Fire Chief Dave Upper, a third-party contractor working at the facility accidentally hit a valve, opening it in the process. Approximately five litres of hydrochloric acid spilled out of the valve before it was quickly closed by staff members, and the hazardous chemical quickly vapourized within the room where the leak took place.

Upper explained emergency crews used a decontamination facility at THK before staff members were sent to the hospital for inspection. He assured community members that the vapour cloud was completely contained inside the facility, posing no threat to the public.

Three workers who suffered direct exposure to the acid leak were rushed to the hospital as CTAS 2 (Canadian Triage Acuity Scale) patients, said Bryce Brunarski, a spokesperson for Niagara EMS Operations. In a statement to Narcity, Brunarski added that “[the affected workers] were decontaminated by facility staff with support from our CBRNE paramedics and St Catharines fire.”

Alongside the three individuals who made contact with the acid, 20 more workers made their way to the hospital as a precautionary measure. Nine of these workers were brought to the hospital to evaluate the risk and severity of their potential injuries with minor exposure to the leak. 10 of the staff members, none of whom suffered symptoms but were still at potential risk, used the St. Catharines Transit bus system to get to the hospital. One more worker made it to the hospital alone.

Fire crews responded at 6:17 p.m. to the Phillips Park Family Aquatic Center, 828 Montgomery Rd. in Aurora, after an employee reported an unknown substance leaking from a small building next to the facility, according to a statement from the Aurora fire department. The situation was then upgraded to a Level II HazMat response and the Aurora Fire Department Hazardous Material Team responded to the scene.

It was determined that the leaking substance was hydrochloric acid, a chemical used to raise the pH of water in swimming pools, fire officials said. It was estimated that between 5 and 10 gallons of the chemical leaked from a 30-gallon poly tank.

The leak was caused by a 500-gallon poly tank that started to backfill after being refilled on Friday, fire officials said. It is not clear why the 500-gallon poly tank started to backfill with water from a pool water line, pushing the product into the 30 gallon poly tank and causing the spillage.

The HazMat team used sodium bicarbonate to neutralize the hydrochloric acid, making it safe for cleanup, fire officials said.

The crash happened around 9:30 a.m. on state Route 76 at the intersection of North River Road, said North County Fire Protection District Capt. John Choi.

A Chevrolet Astro van rear-ended a Ford F-150 truck that was carrying one gallon of muriatic acid and one gallon of hydrochloric acid, Choi said. The truck was sandwiched between the Astro and another vehicle in front, he said.

The chemicals that spilled are corrosive and can burn the skin and eyes. If inhaled, they can inflame the eyes, nose and throat.

“No one was in danger of dying, but it’s something we have to mitigate properly,” Choi said.

There was a chemical spill at the former Federal Mogul plant north of Waldo Boulevard in Manitowoc late last week.

The spill occurred late Thursday night and persisted through about 7:00 Friday evening.

The Manitowoc Fire Department reports workers were moving some hydrochloric acid when some of the chemicals were spilled and got into a large quantity of paper.

A Haz-Mat team from Appleton was called in and a third-party firm assisted in cleanup, but some of the paper remained contaminated.

A wind shift and an increase in humidity Friday reactivated the plume of chemicals and an open door caused the plume to re-enter the building.

Personnel were evacuated for the second time, but crews were able to complete the cleanup. There were no injuries reported.

There has been a recent uptick in garbage truck related incidents in Mesa over the last 30 days caused by the placement of household hazardous materials in trash and recycle containers.

The first incident involved the placement of muriatic pool acid bottles in a load of trash. Hazardous fumes were released, and staff had to seek immediate medical attention, according to a release.

In a second incident, pool and paint chemicals ignited a garbage truck fire.

A second garbage truck fire was caused by rechargeable lithium batteries placed in a recycle barrel.

And most recently, a third garbage truck caught on fire on May 2. The cause of the fire is still under investigation, the release states.

Mesa residents are asked to keep hazardous materials out of their trash and recycle containers. The city of Mesa operates a Household Hazardous Materials Facility at 2412 N. Center St. Building No. 2 and encourages Mesa residents to bring their materials to this facility for safe disposal. There is no additional cost to Mesa residents to use this facility that is open 7 a.m.-noon Wednesday-Saturday. For information, email hhm.info@mesaaz.gov.

Just before 9 a.m., the West Burlington Fire Department was sent to the building after receiving an anonymous tip, according to Fire Chief Shaun Ryan.

A pipe at the factory broke late Tuesday, resulting in a large spill of hydrochloric acid, according to Ryan.

Shortly after West Burlington fire crews arrived on the scene, and due to the potential for hydrochloric acid to be explosive, Ryan said he ordered the plant to shut down and send employees home at about 9:15 a.m.

"I basically told the whole plant they had to evacuate," Ryan said. "(Hydrochloric acid) does have the potential to be explosive if the right conditions exist."

Three workers sustained injuries after a boiler unit exploded within the premises of a chemical factory in the Attibele Industrial Area on September 24. The incident comes after two fire incidents were reported in the last four days. According to a report in The Hindu, the blast occurred at Lake Chemicals Pvt Limited, a pharma-related plant, around 1.20 pm. The report stated that Gnanavelu (22) and Mune Gowda (30) were grievously injured while Suryanath (27) sustained minor injuries. The injured workers are being treated at a private hospital near the factory in Anekal taluk and are out of danger, the report said.

The Times of India quoted officials saying that the fire was triggered due to a technical snag with the boiler unit. PM Nagesh, District Fire Officer, told the Hindu that the vessel had chemicals like toluene, methanol, hydrochloric acid. He said that they could not ascertain the exact cause of the blast.

The Bengaluru rural police have registered a case against the factory owners and are investigating the case, mentioned a Hindustan Times report.

Residents in the area reportedly started a flash protest in front of the unit. Vinod, a resident who lives near the factory told Hindustan Times that this was not the first time such an incident occurred at the unit. The resident said that they had told the management of the chemical factory that residents were facing problems due to their output. The resident added that the area was covered with smoke after the blast which concerned them.

The victims reportedly suffered respiratory symptoms and "skin exposure injuries" after being exposed to a vapor cloud caused by a hazardous mixture of chemicals at the New Rochelle YMCA on Weyman Avenue at around 7:15 a.m.

Details on the severity of the injuries wasn't immediately clear, but officials indicated that no one was seriously hurt. The ages of the victims was not specified.

According to fire officials, hydrochloric acid and chlorine "inadvertently" got mixed in the same container, causing a chemical reaction that made several gym patrons and employees ill with fumes.

The incident was deemed "accidental and not criminal in nature." First responders in hazmat suit helped remove people from the building.

According to the fire district’s Facebook post, firefighters originally went to the scene at 11:45 a.m. to the plaza of a Rural King farm supply store off US-41 near the intersection with West Terry Street, where an accident happened inside a truck when roofing tar and muriatic acid combined to create noxious fumes that seeped into the receiving bay of the business.

Rural King managers and employees immediately evacuated the building and called 911.

Firefighters went to the scene and checked the building for toxic levels of acid with hazmat test strips and then wore their hazmat suits to mitigate the chemicals with absorbent.

CHANNELVIEW, Texas (KTRK) -- A Houston truck driver is filing a lawsuit after a massive chemical fire burned for hours at a transit facility in the Channelview area last week.

Houston attorneys Benny Agosto Jr. and Ben Agosto III said they filed the suit on behalf of Antonio Alvarez on Tuesday against K-Solv, the company that controls the facility of the fire.

K-Solv provides environmental protection, disaster services and chemicals to the petrochemical industry. The company is said to be a transit facility, meaning that they don't manufacture products at that location, but rather accept and ship chemicals.

Massive flames shot out of the K-Solv warehouse on Lakeside Drive around 4 p.m. last Wednesday. According to the fire marshal's office, known chemicals on site included, but were not limited to, hydrochloric acid, acetone, ethanol, ethylene dichloride, and other acids.

After monitoring air and water quality levels the following day, the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality said it did not find any areas of concern.

Alvarez's attorneys said the driver, at the time of the fire, was at the facility to make a drop-off and pick up a product. When the fire went off, Alvarez ran and stumbled to the ground as he was trying to get away, according to attorneys. He reportedly sustained "substantial injuries and trauma."

"As sequential explosions rang out, Mr. Alvarez made it to a high fence that he and other facility contractors squeezed and pressed against, while trying to scale it to escape the facility," read a statement issued by Alvarez's attorneys.

A shelter-in-place advisory has been lifted after fire crews responded to a chemical spill in West Chester on Monday.

Crews were called out around 11:18 a.m. to 4544 Muhlhauser Road for a burst chemical pipe at a business, according to the fire department.

Hazmat crews identified the leak as hydrochloric acid and contained the spill for the most part to the building.

Some of the spill leaked into a creek and is now being handled by the EPA.

A shelter-in-place advisory was issued for residents within a half mile of the spill out of an abundance of caution. The shelter in place has since been lifted.

Officials gave an update at 1 p.m. saying crews are continuing to clean up the scene and Muhlhauser Road will be closed for at least another hour.

A Wacker spokeswoman says that an area of the Charleston, Tennessee, polysilicon production plant where a fatal incident occurred late last year was recently released for repair and operation.
"It was temporarily shut down," said Lisa Mantooth, adding that investigations are ongoing into the incident in which one person died and four were injured on Nov. 13.
According to the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation, the fatal mishap took place during maintenance activity at the sprawling Bradley County factory.
The incident resulted in a release of about 15 pounds of hydrochloric acid (HCl), a TDEC statement said. The reportable quantity under the Emergency Planning and Community Right-To-Know Act and Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation & Liability Act for HCl is 5,000 pounds, the agency said.
The TDEC statement said the quantity of HCl released would not affect air quality or adversely impact the surrounding community.
But TDEC said HCl is a permitted source and the November incident is under investigation by the U.S. Chemical Safety and Hazard Investigation Board. In addition, the Tennessee Occupational Safety and Health Administration (TOSHA) has an investigation in progress.

A city spokesperson says the Level 1 hazmat incident involved a maintenance worker being exposed to muriatic acid. That worker was taken to the hospital to be treated for chemical burns.
It's a potentially dangerous acid, but despite the big response, which also shut down a ramp off the 190, they say people around there were not in danger.
"There's no concerns outside the building at all," Buffalo Fire Division Chief Mike Tuberdyke said. "We just had to shut down the surrounding street outside the Flickinger Center itself just because of traffic. Spokesperson Lisa Mantooth said in a statement that the injured workers were taken to area hospitals. As of 6 p.m., three are being treated, and one has been treated and released.

"Our thoughts and prayers remain with the injured individuals and the family of the deceased," said Mantooth in the statement.
Site Manager and Vice President Mary Beth Hudson told Mix 104.1 WCLE's Steve Hartline in an interview that from what they've learned so far, during a maintenance operation by the contractors, a "small release of a mixture of steam and hydrochloric acid" happened. She says the leak was quickly contained.

Hudson says while the contractors were injured in the leak, the community and surrounding area were never endangered.

Wacker's investigation into the incident is ongoing.

The Goodwins Mills Fire Department says a container filled with hydrochloric acid ended up in the trash in Dayton on Monday. When the trash was compacted in a garbage truck, the container broke and reacted with other items in the trash creating a fume cloud.

Employees quickly tried to empty the truck, thinking there was a fire. Two employees were taken to the hospital to be treated for chemical burns.

The Department of Environmental Protection was called to make sure the chemical was contained and there was no lingering danger in the air.

The 250 gallon vat of acid was punctured by a forklift which led to the spill. There were 20 people working at the site at the time of the spill.

Neighboring buildings in a 2-block area were evacuated. The spill happened in a primarily commercial area. The hazmat team with the Denver Fire Department is investigating the spill. Crews said they are confident the spill has been contained and the vapors reduced, in part because of the cooler weather.

A chemical fire has damaged a factory in East Cork.

An investigation into the cause of the incident at the TRS Global Services facility at the IDA Industrial Estate in Carrigtwohill is underway.

The alarm was raised just before 4pm after fire broke out in a large plastic container of hydrochloric acid, with an estimated capacity of up to 1,000-litres.

It's believed the container was more than a third full at the time and that a large volume of acid spilled.

The acid vapourised on contact with the air, and the drifting gas cloud forced the temporary shutdown of air handling units at the nearby Stryker plant, disrupting some of that plant’s processes for a time.

Chief Gorski said that Hazmat was there to help with the identification of chemicals found on site.

The crews found:

50 gallons muriatic acid

22 gallons of the finished “Miracle Mineral Solution”
