The gold-plated crucibles used in differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) tests on hydrazine hydrate (HH) had a significant influence on the test results during a thermal risk assessment for a process to be scaled up in a pilot plant. The crucibles from four different suppliers delivered completely different test results. The subsequent Calvet calorimetry C80 test using a glass-lined Hastelloy cell could produce highly reliable thermal stability data of HH. Using the C80 test method, it was proved that high-purity gold could significantly impact the thermal stability of HH. It also effectively distinguished different impacts of metallic impurities, such as stainless steel (SS) 316 L, rust, and Hastelloy C-276 (HC276) on the thermal stability of HH.

A small package of hydrazine monohydrate was detonated in Glasgow St by the New Zealand Defence Force at 9.30am yesterday.

The chemical was found in an unstable condition by a laboratory manager at Dunedin probiotics manufacturer Blis Technologies on Thursday.

The site has now reopened and police cordons removed, Blis and Fire and Emergency New Zealand said in separate statements.

"The chemical was disposed of safely via a controlled detonation at the site by the New Zealand Defence Force around 9.45am (2045 GMT) this morning," Fire and Emergency New Zealand said in a statement.

Police had earlier cordoned off several streets in the area to dispose of the container where some "hydrazine monohydrate had crystalised".

When a test fire of SpaceX's Crew Dragon capsule went up in smoke Saturday, the incident at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station puffed up a reddish plume that was seen for miles.

What few likely knew was just how toxic and potentially deadly that distant cloud could have been if winds had shifted onshore.

The special propellants for the Crew Dragon capsule – designed to carefully supply engine firings during liftoff anomalies and navigate the craft in space – are far more dangerous than those used for the typical launch. The hydrazine and nitrogen tetroxide used Saturday are called hypergolic fluids, meaning they react violently when they come in contact with one another. They have been used in rockets and spacecraft for decades because they can be stored over a long period of time and still be reliable.

But they are dangerous to handle.

To prevent any potential exposures to the public, tests like Saturday's are conducted when prevailing winds point away from population centers.

SpaceX, NASA and the U.S. Air Force have remained tight-lipped on the April 20 incident, offering few details about the fire, which lofted reddish nitrogen tetroxide – sometimes referred to as fuming red nitric acid – into the sky as hundreds spectated a surfing festival at Cocoa Beach.

Around a dozen schools across the UK are believed to have called in the military bomb disposal teams to conduct controlled explosions in recent days.

The controlled explosions are being carried over the improperly stored A-level chemistry substance 2,4 dinitrophenyl hydrazine (DNP).

It comes as the government issued national guidance with teachers urging them to check if laboratories were storing DNP.

St Dominic's Priory School, Stone, was one of the schools to have the disposal team on site on Thursday. A controlled explosion was carried out.

A Staffordshire Police spokesperson, Vicky Beech, said: "We had a call from a school in the Stone area on November 3 following their receipt of national guidance regarding the disposal of a hazardous substance.

"The EOD (Explosives and Ordnance Disposal) team attended and dealt with it. The particular chemical involved does not pose any danger as long as it is not being handled. Disposal work was done outside normal school hours to minimise disruption."

A container of hydrazine hydrate — a flammable and highly toxic liquid used as a foaming agent and as a rocket propellant — was accidentally overturned by a forklift in one of the shipping bays. Workers immediately evacuated the facility and called 911.
Fire Chief Charles Doody said firefighters recognized the seriousness of the hazard, isolated the area, and called for a Tier 2 hazardous materials response. Approximately 20 state hazmat technicians and 10 Canton firefighters worked for five hours to upright the tank and stop the leak. A private company was called in to do the clean up. There were no injuries and it did not pose a danger to the abutting properties or residents. The business was allowed to resume once the cleanup was done.
The state Department of Environmental Protection was also on scene to address any possible impacts to the environment. Doody reported that there were no environmental problems from the incident.

Just four droplets of hydrazine sent half a dozen Vermont Air National Guardsmen to the hospital and led to a hazmat response Friday morning at the air base. The chemical is used to jump-start an engine if a jet loses power in flight, and it's highly flammable.

"It also has chemicals involved which can be toxic if they are inhaled or they get on your skin or eyes," Col. Patrick Guinee said.

At an afternoon press conference, Guinee said responders neutralized the chemical shortly after the 7:30 a.m. spill. However, not before the crew reported an unusual taste associated with the exposure.

"No other symptoms came up," Guinee said. "Our airmen are our primary concern. They are our treasure. All six-- it was precautionary in nature to transport them to Fletcher Allen-- to make sure they were OK."

All six returned to work by the afternoon.

The spill occurred during routine maintenance. The cause is still under investigation.

Following a fire that broke out at Taoyuan County’s Kuanying Industrial Park before dawn on Saturday, the Taoyuan County Government’s Environmental Protection Bureau yesterday said that initial testing on the concentration of toxic chemical substances in the air showed levels were within the appropriate limits, but added that wastewater had polluted a nearby river.
The fire broke out at 1:29am on Saturday near Datong 1st Rd in the industrial park and the flames spread across seven plants, including the Gearex Corp, the bureau said.
The bureau said that because the toxic chemical substances stored at Taiwan K.K. Corp and Lysurf Chemical Co were affected by the fire, it immediately initiated the emergency response mechanism and the Environmental Protection Administration also sent its toxic substance emergency response team.
Along with the response team, the bureau said it applied the Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy technique to obtain pollution data in the surrounding at-risk areas.
The probe found that the concentration of methyl alcohol was 68.5 parts per million (ppm), below the standard of 200ppm; while the concentration of ethyl acetate was 56ppm, below the standard of 400ppm, collected at 4:30am.
The concentration levels of methyl alcohol and ethyl acetate had dropped to 5.4ppm and 2.8ppm respectively when tested at 6:30am, the bureau said, adding that the toxic substance stored at Taiwan K.K. Corp — hydrazine — had become nitrogen oxides when burning, so hydrazine had not been detected.
The bureau said it will impose a fine between NT$100,000 (US$3,336) and NT$1 million on the Gearex Corp for air pollution caused by its fire accident, based on the Air Pollution Control Act (空氣污染防制法).

NASA officials said the rocket fuel known as hydrazine is one of the most toxic that crews have had to contend with.
Experts said short-term exposure can lead to seizures, and even put people in comas.
NASA said it is a chemical that it does not want to leave behind as it prepares the shuttles for display in the museums.

Six firefighters were treated at the scene for exposure to a hazardous chemical after they went to fight an intentionally set fire at a former Springfield elementary school.
...
During the firefighting effort, Pennington worked with firefighters inside the building to force a rear door open so they had another exit.
Once the fire was out, several firefighters were working inside the building and began to feel their eyes and throats burning, said Battalion Chief Andy Woody.
The hazardous materials team was called in, along with hazmat specialists from Logan-Rogersville. The team determined that hydrazene, a chemical used in the boiler room, had caused the burning.
The Springfield School District sold the building in 2006.
The school was closed after the school board decided to consolidate Fairbanks with nearby Weaver Elementary School.
