The incident happened around 4 p.m. inside the Pitkin Education Building just off Paramus Road.

Addressing the campus in a statement, Bergen County Community College President Dr. Eric M. Friedman confirmed that the building has been cleared and secured. However, it will remain closed this evening for all classes, activities and operations.

Dr. Friedman said Pitkin will reopen tomorrow morning for normal operations.

President Freidman shared his account of the incident in the following statement:

“This afternoon, a contractor conducted a routine cleaning of a drain in Bergen Pizza. The cleaner reacted with trapped food/grease and created a localized chemical reaction.

Four College employees in close proximity inhaled the chemical reaction and are currently receiving treatment at a local hospital.

ROCKTON — What several took days to burn is going to take several months, if not longer, to clean up.

Sunday marked five months since the June 14 chemical explosion and fire that destroyed the Chemtool plant at 1165 Prairie Hill Road.

The massive fire that could be seen for miles forced a five-day evacuation for residents living within one mile of the facility, which manufactured grease, lubricating oil and fluids.

Much of the charred, fire-ravaged site looks the same today as it did days after the fire and many of those affected by the blaze still are waiting for answers about long-term health and environmental impact.

Here is what we know so far:

Portable water tanks removed

At the time of the fire, a large trench or moat was dug around the plant to collect water contaminated by the fire and by chemicals that were applied to the fire. The runoff was collected in the moat to keep it from entering the nearby Rock River.

The moat continues to collect runoff water after heavy rains. The water is then removed and stored in the 18,000- to 21,000-gallon frac tanks, portable storage units the size of semi-trailers.

There used to be 50 or more of those tanks on the site once, Village President John Peterson said. Those are gone.

In June, the Chemtool plant in Rockton, Illinois, accidentally exploded, causing the plant to be a total loss.

Rodney Weinzierl, executive director of the Illinois Corn Growers Association, says the plant produced around 50% of the grease farmers use on machinery.

“I know there was a really bad fire up in Rockford here a number of weeks ago, and there’s been a lot of issues around, you know, whether there’s what kind of pollution or toxins were released. But, you know from a farmers perspective, you know, you kind of feel bad for what happened up there to the workers and the factory and all that. But, here not too recently, that that factory produced a lot of the grease that’s used in the machinery area.

ROCKTON, Ill. — Local health officials in the county where a chemical fire has been burning all day Monday are telling people within three miles of the fire to wear masks as a precaution.

The fire at Chemtool in Rockton, Illinois, just across the Wisconsin state border from Beloit, has been burning since 7 a.m.

Chemtool is one of the country’s biggest producers of grease and lubricants. Illinois emergency management officials say it’s possible chemicals like lead, antifreeze, nitrogen and sulfuric acid could be burning in the fire.

Because of that, officials with the Winnebago County Health Department are asking people within three miles of the plant to wear a face covering if they’re outside.

People within one mile of the plant were evacuated earlier Monday morning. Officials say those evacuations will remain in place until further notice, and concerns about cool temperatures could lead officials to ask more people to leave the area or shelter in place.

The plant sits next to the Rock River, leading fire departments to limit their use of water in fear of toxic runoff reaching the water.

Around 4:30 a.m., the truck was heading northbound near milepost 142 when it caught fire.

There was no shoulder available due to freeway construction, so the driver stopped in the right lane and got out. He escaped with no injuries.

The fire spread to the trailer, which was deemed a total loss, but local firefighters prevented it from spreading to the grass.

However, that was just the beginning.

Utah Department of Transportation and hazmat workers responded to perform field tests on the truck's contents. They found that it was hauling silicone grease, which is flammable and difficult to clean.

With little air in the laundry basket, firefighters say there was spontaneous combustion.

About noon Thursday, Ashland Fire Department and emergency responders in hazmat suits were in the parking lot behind the restaurant, 1320 Cleveland Avenue.

Rob Stoops, the owner of the restaurant, said an employee found the bag and the restaurant called authorities.

Brane said it looked as though someone cleaned out a meth lab and dumped the chemicals in the restaurant's grease bin. The chemicals for a one-pot meth lab were removed and will be disposed of properly.

NASHUA — Fire officials say Sunday’s blaze on Cedar Street, which was initially a small stove-top grease fire, quickly spread when a resident used water in an attempt to extinguish it.

“He did everything they tell you not to do,” Deputy Kevin Kerrigan said of the resident, who sustained facial burns as a result of the incident.

Firefighters responded around 3:30 p.m. on Sunday to a multi-unit building at 18 Cedar St. for a reported cooking fire. There was heavy fire on the first floor of the building when they arrived, which was beginning to extend to the second level of the three-story structure.

The two-alarm blaze quickly spread because of the old design and age of the building, according to Kerrigan.

“The crews did an exceptional job of getting that fire contained. There was a lot of work for them to open up the walls and get ahead of it,” said Kerrigan.

Although the fire extended to all three floors, Kerrigan said the building is not a total loss, and most likely can be restored.

The fire department was called to 756 Hiawatha Drive at 12:09 p.m. Tuesday, where a grease fire in the kitchen went out of control after it was not completely put out with a large dry-chemical extinguisher used by the resident, Tamika Dalton-Fox. She thought it was out and then it re-ignited.

“By the time we got there, the entire kitchen was engulfed,” said Capt. Brian Dose.

The fire in the kitchen was extinguished, the ceiling was opened, and fire was found in the attic and in the common wall between the kitchen and bathroom. They used their thermal-imaging camera and found no further fire, Ottawa Fire Department reported.

James Dalton owns the building, which sustained $90,000 in damage. There also was $8,000 in damage to contents, according to the department.

Marquette High School fire
Firefighters were called at 6:53 p.m. Monday to Marquette High School where a plastic laundry basket filled with clean towels was on fire on the second floor. Firefighters used an air-propelled water can to put out the fire, which they believe started when some towels that had been used for cleaning or spreading of chemicals or oil had been taken out of a dryer, folded and put away hot.

The fire department noted that in an enclosed situation, enough heat can build up to cause residual chemical or grease in rags or towels to combust.

Columbia, SC (WLTX) - DHEC says it has an open and ongoing criminal investigation after high concentrations of a cancer causing chemical were found inside the grease trap of a Midlands restaurant.

DHEC issued an emergency regulation that impacts waste water plants after the discovery of cancer causing Polychlorinated Buphenyls was made September 13. Previous Coverage: DHEC Finds PCBSs in Richland County

The discovery was made during a routine inspection of a grease trap at the McCalisters Deli on Sparkleberry Lane.

Inspectors said that when grease was being removed from the trap, they noticed a dark liquid like motor oil. A call was made to DHEC who found high levels of the industrial lubricant outlawed in the United States in 1979.

DHEC believes someone illegally dumped the chemical in the restaurant grease trap.

"Really nasty stuff," said Congaree River Keeper Bill Stangler. "It's a known carcinogen. It causes cancer. It has a really long life. It doesn't break down in the environment quickly."

(KTVI) – Firefighters in St. Louis respond to thousands of fires a year, and none more than fires that start in the kitchen. The numbers here mirror national figures, with about 42% of all fires starting with things like the pot left unattended on the stove, of the cardinal sin of fire, throwing water on burning grease. That is like having a time bomb in your home, and can change your life forever. Just ask Yolanda Johnson.
“I don’t know what happened or how it happened. But my sleeve caught on fire.”
Johnson was cooking steak and potatoes that night in 2005, when something happened and the pan caught fire. The burning sleeve was just the beginning, though. A friend in the kitchen with her though she was helping.
“My shirt caught on fire so I automatically took the shirt off, but then my friend was with me and she automatically threw the water on the skillet.”
The sound that came next is unmistakable. It’s that of a cup full of water expanding an already large fire by about 25 thousand times. It is a ball of flame that can engulf a room.
“It went everywhere. It went up and back,” she remembers of the flames. “And all over me.”

Woods Cross -- Gloria Hillier is no stranger to oil splatter on her house. This is the third time it has happened since she has lived in Bountiful.

On Friday morning, Hillier and her husband, who have lived there for 50 years, sat outside on their patio. After they got up, they noticed their clothes were covered in grease. A fine coating of oil droplets had dusted her property. She spent the next two hours cleaning up all of her lawn furniture and railings around her home.

"It has been worse before," Hillier said as she noticed another dark spot on her front porch railing.

The latest dousing happened Thursday night, when a large metal oil storage tank's roof burst at the HollyFrontier refinery in Woods Cross. The eruption sent a swath of oil about a 40 yards wide and traveling through the air over Interstate 15 and up to 1 mile southeast of the refinery.

An estimated 8,400 gallons of oil landed on homes, businesses and cars in Woods Cross, West Bountiful and Bountiful. The refinery sits 393 S. 800 West in Woods Cross.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Firefighters in Portland have rescued a man found in his bathroom with severe chemical burns on more than 70 percent of his body.

Portland Fire and Rescue spokesman Paul Corah says the 59-year-old man arrived home Friday from a week-long, out of town job. He reportedly called his wife to say he was going to try to get some grease stains out of his coat.

His wife came home Friday evening to an overwhelming odor like paint thinner. She found her husband in a bathtub soaked with what seemed to be a solvent-based chemical.

Paramedics found the man semi-conscious. Corah says they held their breath until they could move him out to the fresh air in the front yard and provide first aid.

Portland firefighter and paramedic David Paul says he and other medics wore gas masks in the ambulance while riding with the patient to the Oregon Burn Center.

Hazmat firefighters are working to identify the chemical.
