The exercise will also clamp-down on all agro-chemical sellers who flout the rules and regulations governing the sale of agro-chemicals in the operational area.

This was revealed by the Crop Officer of the Birim Central Municipal Agric Directorate, Mr. John Annorkwah, when reacting to a comment raised by a participant at a day’s training workshop for agro-chemical dealers at Akyem Oda, in the Eastern region.

The workshop organized by Green Innovation Centre (GIC), a German International Cooperation (GIZ), in collaboration with the Ministry of Food and Agriculture which aimed at providing advice on safety precautions and proper storage of chemicals for dealers, attracted all agro-chemical retailers within the Birim Central Municipality.

Residents say the explosions were at the Base Ammunition Depot of the Ghana Armed Forces and multiple blasts could be heard for over an hour.

Most of the residents, who were fast asleep, had to run for their lives moments after the explosions at midnight amidst power outage.

“Residents in the bordering communities have to evacuate to safer grounds. People were heading towards Aflao, Tema, Afienya and Apollonia.

“The explosion occurred at a laboratory where small arms are kept and the Fire Service managed to prevent it from spreading to where the highly explosive weapons are kept,” a journalist, Moses Dautey, told Starrfmonline.com.

At least seven people were killed and dozens injured, mostly suffering burns, after a huge explosion at a fuel distribution site in Ghana‘s capital, local authorities said on Sunday.

The blast on Saturday evening was heard across much of the city, sending a giant fireball into the sky above the eastern part of Accra and causing frightened residents to flee their homes in large numbers. Others were forcibly evacuated.

At least seven people died and 132 were injured, a statement from the Ministry of Information read out on local radio said on Sunday. About half of them had already been treated and discharged, it said

The site includes a liquefied petroleum gas storage depot and two service stations run by state-owned GOIL and oil major Total. It was not immediately clear where or how the explosion began.

Witnesses said people had already began fleeing the area ahead of the blast because of the pungent odour of gas – a factor that likely reduced casualties.

The disaster occurred at about 8:30 am, Wednesday morning on the down floor of the old storey building.
“The cause of the fire is yet to be established.” Assistant Commissioner of Fire at the Northern Region Command, ACFP, D. Douglas Koyiri told Citi News at the scene.
At a press briefing, the CEO, Dr. Prosper Akambong gave the assurance that routine medical services will continue unabated despite the inferno.
“Let me use this occasion to say that services within the hospital are still going on, the doctors are taking care of patients and nurses are in the wards taking care of patients and so services that we run here at the hospital have not come to any halt.”

Tema, Sept 27, GNA - Nii Armah Ashitey, Greater Accra Regional Minister, on Monday advised companies using inflammable products to constantly observe safety practices to prevent fire outbreaks. He also asked management of such companies to provide their workers with fire protective clothing and equipment.

Nii Ashitey made the call when he visited the Midland International Ghana Limited Company, which experienced a fire outbreak on Saturday. Four persons carrying out repair works on a tank at the company lost their lives in the explosion, while properties running into several thousands of Ghana Cedis were also lost in the blaze.
...
The Minister asked the Ghana National Fire Service (GNF) to intensify its anti-fire education and drills at companies to prevent out break of fires.

Mr Kwabena Obese-Jecty, Managing-Director of Midland, who conducted the Minister and his entourage round the burnt premises, said the company has always taken fire safety issues seriously since it started operations in 2001. He commended the GNFS for effectively containing the fire and preventing it from spreading to nearby establishments. Mr Obese-Jecty also praised the Police for keeping the people out of the premises during the incident. Madam Jemima Anku, Marketing Manager of the Company, said that the four people, who died in the incident, were employees of M&B Engineering, who were carrying out repair works on an empty storage tank at the premises. She said the company deals in ethanol, a chemical product, used in the production of alcohol, pharmaceutical products, cosmetics and perfume. Madam Anku said that routine maintenance works were mostly carried out at the company during week ends and holidays. She said the entire office block of the company, loading shed, a tanker, forklift, a pick-up vehicle, storage tanks among other properties were lost during the fire outbreak. 27 Sept 10

They arrived shortly after 10:30 to find people leaving the building and immediately set up a triage area upwind to assess people, ER24 spokesperson Werner Vermaak said.

A hazardous materials unit searched the building and found a man lying under a table, but he had died.

Colleagues suggested he may have become confused during the evacuation, or was overcome by the fumes.

It was believed that construction work to the roof led to the rupture of an ammonia gas line.

Five paramedics had also been taken to hospital for treatment as they began showing symptoms of exposure to the gas.
