Ten students were taken to a hospital Thursday with minor complaints after they were exposed to something that smelled like chemicals in a portable fourth-grade classroom at Ethel Phillips Elementary School in Sacramento, fire officials said.

A Sacramento City Unified School District spokesperson confirmed the source of the odor was most likely a Freon leak from a heating, ventilation, and air conditioning unit.

The students were OK when they left for the hospital and are being monitored, said Capt. Keith Wade with the Sacramento Fire Department.

"We’re just thankful that no one was severely injured," he said.

A hazmat team ran tests in the portable classroom before determining the source was likely the Freon leak.

A chemical leak on Red River College Polytechnic’s Notre Dame Avenue campus prompted the school to halt classes and evacuate a research centre Wednesday.

Shortly before lunchtime, RRC Polytech evacuated its Vehicle Technology Research Centre, also known as Building Z, due to a “safety incident,” said Conor Lloyd, director of college and public relations.

“The incident was a freon leak that occurred outside a classroom while a contractor was performing regular maintenance work, resulting in a small spill of less than (five) litres,” Lloyd wrote in an email.

The school said it immediately activated its safety protocols at the northwest Winnipeg facility, which included evacuating the affected building and notifying staff and students about the event via its campus alerting system.

No injuries were reported and nurses assessed individuals who were near the spill, Lloyd said, adding normal operations continue in other buildings while the affected facility remains closed for clean-up, further testing and repairs.

RRC Polytech anticipates the building will be declared safe by workplace safety and health staff and classes will be able to resume Thursday.

Just after 2 p.m. Monday afternoon, the Port Chester Fire Department responded to the Costco on Westchester Ave. on a report of smoke in the structure. The first units to arrive quickly determined it was not smoke from a fire at the scene, but that there was a large freon leak on the 2nd floor.

Fire officials said the cause of the leak is being investigated, and emergency crews are still operating at the scene.

Firefighters from Mamaroneck, Rye Brook , Purchase, Town of Mamaroneck, Village of Mamaroneck, West Harrison, Valhalla and Westchester County hazmat teams are supporting Port Chester FD at the scene of the chemical leak. Con Edison teams also responded to the call.

The hazmat team found Freon, a slightly toxic compound used in cooling systems, in the air. Twenty-five students were cleared out of the classroom, Exline said. The portable building is one of seven at the school.

Exline said the teacher also might have felt sick because of a recent bout with the flu.

Maintenance is working on fixing the heating, ventilation and air conditioning system in the room, as it is the only system that could have produced the Freon, Exline said.

The initial crews arrived on scene, 30960 Lake Shore Blvd., at 9:09, after which three patients experiencing respiratory distress were treated and transported to Lake Health’s West Medical Center in Willoughby. A fourth was treated and released at the scene, Henry said.

Because of health privacy laws, Henry said he couldn’t comment on any specific symptoms these people were experiencing. He said generally speaking, the chemical in question — Freon No. 407A — can cause dizziness, headaches, chest pain and, in larger amounts, cardiac-related symptoms.

The amount released at Aldi on March 29, however, was small, he said.

“It was actually a very small amount of the product,” he said, adding that it was about 4 pounds. “Think of a regular, household refrigerator. That would have a couple of pounds in it. Or, if you think about a small, pancake air compressor. The quantity (of Freon involved at Aldi) was actually smaller than that.”

There were no injuries, according to Fire Chief Kenneth Berkenbush.

A heating, ventilation and air conditioning unit malfunctioned, causing a cooling agent to leak about 1:18 p.m., Berkenbush said.

The leaking cooling agent made its way through the school ventilation system, causing rooms and corridors to fill with mist. Thinking it might be smoke, a staff member pulled a fire alarm and the school was evacuated.

“It was actually metabolized freon that was coming out of a compressor,” Berkenbush said.

"Call came in around 10:40 for a freon leak," said Fire Chief Dave Schmaltz. "We responded like we normally would with an engine to check it out first. And then once we got here we up the response just 'cause what we had found."

The company says that a refrigerant leaked at headquarters and all employees were evacuated from the North Tower. Kellogg said 23 people were taken to area hospitals for evaluation as a precautionary measure.

"We set up a triage area and they checked out all the patients," said Schmaltz during a media briefing. "They transported a couple in the ambulance. Then we actually had the city bus come down to take the rest of them up to the hospital."

Kahului firefighters responded to a hazardous materials leak at Island Grocery Depot on Amala Place in Kahului at 9:40 p.m. Saturday Nov. 26, 2016.

Firefighters initially were called out to a fire alarm activation, but after meeting with a representative from the business, crews learned that an employee discovered some sort of foggy cloud or smoke within the building. The business was closed at the time and no one was inside the building.

A hazardous materials team was brought in to investigate. Using protective gear and Self Contained Breathing Apparatuses or SCBA, three firefighters entered the building and located a gas leak coming from the refrigeration equipment over the chiller boxes. Hazmat technicians were able to stop the leak with the guidance of a service technician who was outside watching their movements through a camera monitor.

The leaking product was identified as Freon 44A, a type of refrigerant. Maui Fire Services Chief Edward Taomoto said the gas cloud formed by the leaking product caused the fire alarm system to activate.

After firefighters closed off valves and capped the leak, the building’s doors were opened and crews used large fans to ventilate the building for about an hour until it was safe to enter without special protective gear.

A service technician made temporary repairs so the chiller units could still be used until more permanent repairs could be done later.

A battalion chief, fire engine and a hazardous materials crew from Kahului responded to the incident.

Fire crews in Seekonk and East Providence were called to the cafe on Highland Avenue (Route 6) about 11:15 a.m. Friday for a hazmat or air quality issue inside. Seekonk’s fire chief, Michael Healy, told Eyewitness News it appeared to be a freon or chemical leak.

Employees helped customers clear out of the building. About 18 people had some issues breathing, the fire chief said, and some complained of skin irritation; in the end, five were transported to the hospital to get checked out.

The firefighters went into the building to check levels of fumes, but measurement meters showed no readings. The cafe closed while the issue was investigated by the company’s general maintenance crew. They’ll also need to sanitize surfaces, Chief Healy said, and discard any food that was potentially exposed.

Fire crews were called to the Foods Co at 1250 Macdonald Ave. around 2:15 p.m. after a minor explosion and Freon leak in a refrigeration unit at the store, fire Chief Michael Banks said.

Freon, a chlorofluorocarbon, is a compound commonly used as a refrigerant. Banks described the odor the gas emits as a musty, oily smell.

The fire brigade was called to a home in Rackham Mews, near the Streatham end of Mitcham Lane, at about 9.30pm yesterday, whose occupant became alarmed when he punctured a hole in his freezer.

Refridgerators contain a liquid chemical called Freon, which can escape as gas if there is a puncture and settle in the lungs, causing health problems, if inhaled.

A spokesman for Tooting fire station said: "We get called out to these kinds of incidents, which are reported as chemical incidents, more often than you would think.

"A leak to a fridge can be dangerous and residents are right to call us if they are concerned.

"But we would urge anyone defrosting their freezer not to use a sharp knife to scrape off the ice. Just turn it off and wait a couple of hours and that should be enough."

It happened at an unoccupied office/warehouse facility and communications tower in the 1000 block of Valley Hill Road in Charlestown Township.
Police said the victim and three co-workers were contracted to remove mechanical equipment and scrap metal from the building, and had been working at the building for the past week.
They said when the group arrived to work on Saturday, two people were exposed to fumes believed to have come from a mechanical room housing air conditioning cooling units.
Police said the victim collapsed, and the other worker was able to call for help. The three workers tried rescuing the victim, but were overcome by the fumes.
All four were transported to Paoli Hospital for treatment, and the victim was pronounced dead at the hospital.
Several emergency crews arrived on scene to secure the building and area surrounding it. It was determined to be safe after being ventilated.
Police said a preliminary investigation showed the victim's company was in the early stages of removing the cooling units. An inspection of the units showed they were still pressurized and several of the valves were opened, allowing freon gases to escape.

Crews from West Vancouver Fire and Rescue were called to the 1600 block of Marine Drive shortly before 1:30 a.m. on Sunday (Mar. 27) after toxic fumes triggered the store's automatic detection system.

After arriving at the scene, fire crews evacuated the building and gathered the store's night crew inside a fire engine.

Investigators determined the white cloud filling the store was a chemical known as Forane R507 — commonly used in refrigeration compressors.

In large doses the chemical, which was spraying from a disconnected supply hose, can compromise heart function and cause central nervous system disorders.

The fire department responded to the store on the 3900 block of Middlefield Road at about 6:20 a.m. and determined the smoke was caused by a refrigerant leak in the mechanical room at the back of the building. A refrigerator technician quickly stopped the leak, according to the fire department.
Dennis McClellan, the store director, said he was the first person to see the smoke and that a co-worker alerted the fire department.
"I didn't know what it was," McClellan said. "We knew it was some kind of chemical because we could kind of breathe it."
McClellan described the smoke as a "big puff of Freon."
The store was closed at the time, and the employees were evacuated as a precaution, he said. No one was injured.

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Emergency officials responded to a freon leak at a deli at the foot of Clove Road and Howard Avenue in Sunnyside today.
HazMat units were summoned to Mignosi's Supermarket, at 1490 Clove Rd., for the incident, which occurred in a refrigeration unit, according to radio transmissions.
The problem stemmed from defectiveness with the system's compressor, according to an FDNY spokesman.
Two workers were overcome by the fumes and taken to Richmond University Medical Center, West Brighton. Two other workers refused treatment on the scene.
Officials announced the situation under control at 1:47 p.m.
Numerous emergency vehicles responded, blocking one lane of Clove Road.
The Wagner College graduation ceremony up Howard Avenue while the response was at its height. The combination of emergency vehicles and graduation traffic caused heavy delays in the area. Traffic control agents were needed to assist.
