LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – While we all know the heat is dangerous if we’re out in it too long, you might not realize how risky it is for the batteries powering your devices.

Lincoln Fire & Rescue is getting the word out after responding to a pickup truck fire earlier this week.

After an investigation, officials believe lithium batteries caused the fire.

They say a battery-powered rangefinder was stashed in a golf bag in the bed of the pickup, which was sitting in the sun for several hours.

Inspector Brad Hasenjeager suspects that heat continued to build up inside the bag, and eventually, the batteries ignited.

LFR spokeswoman MJ Lierman said devices powered by lithium batteries are more likely to ignite, especially if they’re old or damaged.

“The lithium batteries are particularly the ones we’re concerned about,” she said. “It is a problem that’s becoming more and more aware as the batteries get older, and people are not keeping up with the maintenance. If they get damaged, they’re really more likely to have problems.”

Hasenjeager said battery fires can be especially dangerous because they’re technically chemical fires.

He said they’re harder to put out and can burn at over 3,000 degrees, which can ignite items that wouldn’t normally burn.

Earlier this year, Forbes reported that these batteries are overheating on aircraft nearly every single week.

DEER PARK, Texas — Shell officials said they're directing runoff water from the Deer Park Chemicals facility fire into the Houston Ship Channel as a "controlled discharge."
In a statement released Sunday morning, Shell said that their wastewater storage capacity was been "exceeded" and that they'll be deploying a boom to prevent products from entering the channel.
Water is also being added to retention ponds nearby as officials said they expect they'll continue to need large volumes of water to cool equipment for up to 36 hours after the fire is extinguished.
Officials said they're still monitoring the air quality and that no harmful levels of chemicals affecting neighboring communities have been detected.
The fire at the chemical plant reignited Saturday afternoon after being extinguished. The fire continued to burn into Sunday night. In a tweet, Shell Deer Park said the fire "has been contained to a controlled zone."
The company went on to say additional clean-up crews have been deployed and air monitoring is still ongoing as of Sunday night.

A fire burned for a third day on Sunday at Shell Plc's chemical plant in the Houston suburb of Deer Park, Texas, a company spokesperson said.

The fire initially ignited on Friday afternoon in an explosion in an olefins unit, used to make plastics and rubber.

The fire was extinguished for a few hours on Saturday morning before it reignited around 3 p.m. CDT (2000 GMT), said Shell spokesperson Curtis Smith.

No injuries were reported from the fire. Nine people were evaluated and released at local hospitals on Friday for possible chemical exposure.

Water is being sprayed onto the fire to keep it under control until the chemicals, which were being processed at the time of the explosion, burn away, Smith said.

Water may continue to be sprayed for up to 36 hours after the fire is extinguished to keep nearby equipment cool, he said.

Shell representatives said they are experiencing yet another fire with visible smoke within one of their units.

"The incident is being handled within the boundaries of this facility and there is no threat to the community from this incident. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause," their statement read, in part.

PEMEX Deer Park said although there is no fire at its units, its emergency response team is providing aid.

The Harris County Fire Marshal's Office said it is aware of the reignited fire and said it's at one of the same units from Friday. So far, officials say, no injuries have been reported as crews are working to put out the fire.

The fire at the SAFT America battery plant, which ignited around 7 a.m., burned for hours and was finally out by 5 p.m., according to the Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department.
JFRD Chief Keith Powers said the commercial alarm came in at 7:15 a.m. and when firefighters arrived they first tried to attack the chemical-fueled blaze with a dry fire suppressant instead of water.
But the fire, called a thermal runaway, was producing hazardous gases and crews were ordered out of the building onto Waterworks Street. A thermal runaway is a chemical chain reaction in which a battery gradually combusts from the inside out.

They said the outbreak was controlled by security officers on the campus. VC Professor Arvind said the employees who were instrumental in dousing the flames will be honoured.

University security officer Gurtej Singh said the fire incident purportedly took place due to a short circuit at the lab on the ground floor of the building. The swift action of the employees saved the expensive equipment from being damaged.

The fire was brought under control and extinguished by 4.15 am.

Hyderabad fire: In a tragic incident, a massive fire broke out in a chemical factory in Mallapur industrial area on the outskirts of Hyderabad on Wednesday. According to reports, panic gripped the nearby residential areas after huge flames were seen leaping out of the factory premises.
However, there was no report of any casualties as employees were not present in the factory at the time of the incident. A short circuit is suspected to have caused the fire.
Six fire engines were battling for over three hours to douse the fire which started around 3 pm. Notably, firefighting personnel were trying to prevent the fire from spreading to three adjoining factories.

The fire department arrived to find a semi-trailer full of "unknown type of plastics" on fire, according to Richmond Fire Chief Tim Brown. Soon the fire spread to other trailers and then the building.

The fire is emitting a large plume of black smoke which forced an evacuation for all residents living within a half mile of the plant, according to a statement from the Wayne County Emergency Management Agency.

The smoke is "definitely toxic," Indiana State Fire Marshal Steve Jones said in a news briefing on Tuesday.

On Sunday morning, the air quality index in Kochi was above 200, which according to the pollution control board, may cross 300 by evening.
Many residents’ associations in the city said a large number of people have left for their hometowns to get rid of toxic fumes. Empty car parking lots in many apartments and thin attendance in offices are a testimony to it.

The fire broke out inside a 17,000-gallon tank that was filled with about 11,500 gallons of liquid asphalt at SealMaster on West Decatur Street, the Madison Fire Department told reporters.

"We have an evacuation zone right now of 1,000 feet in all directions and everybody within a half a mile is sheltering in place," Madison Fire Chief Jim Ritchey said.

Ritchey said that firefighters tried using Purple K, a dry chemical substance, to put out the fire but it did not work. He said that firefighters don’t want to add water or air into the tank at this time.

Significant structural damage to the timber reinforcing the cooling tower sparked concerns the tower itself could collapse and cause a larger explosion.

“If it had given way, the structure would have likely fallen onto six trailers, each storing 1700 cubic metres of potentially-explosive hydrogen,” Fire and Rescue NSW said.

“If the tower did collapse on these hydrogen tanks we could be talking about a significant fire and explosion ... in the area.”

Firefighters rigged a tractor to each trailer and relocated them to a safe location one by one to remove the explosion risk, which was completed by late afternoon.

Local businesses and homes were advised to evacuate during the operation.

Potsdam Fire received an automatic dialer for an alarm activation at the Center for Advanced Materials Processing (CAMP) and Rowley Laboratories shortly after 8 a.m., fire officials said.
Engine 49 responded immediately driven by Fire Driver Matthew Kroeger, arriving on scene within minutes.

Firefighters reportedly met with Clarkson Security and began searching the building to locate a fire.

The fire appeared to be contained to a trash can, which was found to be inside one of the laboratories.

Kroeger quickly extinguished the fire with an ABC extinguisher on scene. Due to the amount of smoke inside the laboratory, Kroeger requested a second alarm and manpower to the scene.

Firefighter James Corbett brought R-14 and additional members responded to the scene, officials said.

The smoke was cleared from the laboratory and the alarm reset with no issues.

Potsdam Fire turned the scene over to Clarkson Security for investigation.

All units were back in service at 8:53 a.m.

When a standard, gas-powered car erupts in flames, firefighters quickly work to get as much water on it as possible. "We are going to knock that down with half a tank of water or a full tank in most cases," Purcell explained.

But the world of electric vehicle fires is unfamiliar territory. The lithium-ion batteries under the car pose a major hazard when the car is on fire. "If those battery packs go into thermal runaway, which is just a chemical reaction, then they get super-heated and they run away. You can't put them out. They don't go out. They reignite. And they release tremendously toxic gases," he said.

Flames can reach up to 2500 degrees, Purcell explained. And no matter how much water you put on the car; the batteries will reignite.

This particular fire took firefighters hours and required more than 20,000 gallons of water to be put out.

The fire broke at around 4 pm on Thursday and it was pacified after about two and a half hours of hard efforts. About 15 fire tender vehicles of Bairagarh, Gandhinagar, Chirayu Hospital were engaged in pacifying the fire.

To douse the fire, the wall of the building was broken with JCB. Due to the chemical, there was a problem in pacifying the fire. It was found that there is difficulty in breathing due to the smoke arising due to the chemical.

According to Fire Officer Sajid Khan, preliminary investigation has revealed that chemical reaction may have caused the fire. However, the cause of the fire will be clear only after the investigation.

Khan said that it took more than two and a half hours to pacify the fire. Although smoke is coming out now, due to which we were not able to go inside.

Different types of chemicals are kept in large quantities in the lab. Fire personnel had to face difficulty in extinguishing the fire due to chemical fire. Due to the presence of dangerous chemicals, precautions are also being taken. The employees who reached to extinguish the fire told that due to the fire, more smoke is coming out. It is suffocating and is not able to go inside. Due to this also there was delay in extinguishing the fire. Khajurikalan police also reached the spot. At the same time, the SDRF team was also present.

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) – Fire crews had to contend with a hazardous materials situation as they dealt with a car fire in the 300 block of De Laura Drive in Newport News Tuesday.

The Newport News Fire Department responded to the fire just before noon and found several chemicals stored in the vehicle – none of which were out of the ordinary and the owner used for business purposes.

The fire department upgraded to a hazardous materials response as a precaution due to the chemical and fire exposure, and possible environmental issues. The hazardous materials ended up not posing an environmental issue, it said, and they were able to put the fire out.

No injuries were reported.

A Contra Costa Fire Protection District spokesperson said firefighters responded to reports of a fire or explosion at the Martinez Refinery Company late Friday afternoon, but later canceled its emergency response to the 3400 block of Pacheco Boulevard, where the refinery is located, because the large flames that were seen in the area were a result of the flare-up.

Refinery officials confirm the flare-up -- conducted to burn off deposits -- was part of an ongoing special operation. The operation, including the fire, was confined to refinery property.

The fire involved natural gas, according to a tweet from the NTSB, which investigates pipeline mishaps.

A fire department statement said crews responded to a northwest Atlanta home around 8:30 a.m. on Dec. 3, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported. Atlanta Fire Rescue Department officials said a gas leak was found in the front yard after crews extinguished the heavy blaze.

Other news reports said Atlanta Gas Light, the largest natural gas distributor in the Southeast, attributed the cause of the fire to the leak. Fire officials said the origins were still under investigation.

“It’s still doing pretty badly,” he said.

As a result of the fumes that have come from the dump fire, the hamlet told residents on Friday to stay indoors because of the toxins that have been released into the air.

The top concern Friday afternoon was to prevent the fire from spreading to the chemical dump, as that would emit stronger toxic fumes into the community, Lawlor said.

“We’re doing our best to move a lot of that stuff away so that it doesn’t catch on fire and release the fumes and toxicity from those substances,” he added.

Environment and Climate Change Canada is currently measuring the air quality.

Harrison Hills Fire Chief James Bartolovich said there were concerns about chemical exposure coming from Country Pools & Spas, particularly chlorine fumes and forms of acid. Clouds of smoke covered large swaths of the sky.

There was someone working at the business at the time of the fire, Bartolovich said. That person escaped without injury.

Police at the scene said several firefighters were taken to a hospital after breathing in the chemicals as they fought the fire. Bartolovich was able to confirm at least one firefighter was transported from the scene due to inhalation issues.

Two other people were injured in the blaze that tore through the building in the city of Anyang starting at about 4:30 p.m. Monday. It took firefighters about 3 1/2 hours to bring the flames under control, the Wenfang district government said.

One or more welders operating in violation of safety rules appear to have let loose sparks that ignited cotton fabric in the building, according to officials cited by the official Xinhua News Agency. The investigation was ongoing, with company managers and local government officials being questioned, Xinhua said.

A Gresham Fire hazmat team was sent to help clean up the smoldering remains of a hemp plant in Grass Valley that was engulfed in flames Sunday, Nov. 20, leading to evacuations and five burned employees.

The building caught fire Sunday afternoon, and due to the threat of a potential explosion from combustible chemicals, the town was evacuated. The building burned for hours and was fully engulfed in flames, while several small explosions were reported throughout the night.

By Monday morning the fire had died down. The Oregon State Fire Marshal, DEQ, and hazmat teams from Gresham and Umatilla responded to the plant to help clear the building of dangerous chemicals and determine the cause of the fire.

During the evacuation, residents stayed at an overnight shelter at Sherman High School set up by the American Red Cross.

UPDATE: At 3:17 p.m. on Sunday Henrietta Fire District units were dispatched to the Nathaniel Rochester Hall on the RIT campus for a reported lithium ion battery fire on the 8th floor. Crews arrived to find a fire in a work area, on the 8th floor. It took about 30 minutes to bring the fire under control. There were no serious injuries. Due to the volatile nature of lithium ion batteries, a hazardous materials incident was also declared. This is now a common practice due to the chemical reactions involved with these fires. The battery in question today was for an “E Bike” type scooter. These types of batteries have caused several fatal fires in the NYC area. Assistance was provided at the scene by the City of Rochester FD, Gates FD, CHS EMS and the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office.

UPDATE: RIT said it was a small fire that started in a lab in Nathaniel Rochester Hall where some students were working. There was minor water damage. There were no injuries, and no students were displaced.

HENRIETTA, N.Y. – Henrietta firefighters are on the scene of a possible fire from a Lithium ion battery at RIT. The fire has been knocked down and is under control.

Firefighters were called to the 2000 Block of Cedar Street close to midnight for a commercial building on fire. When crews arrived at Valence Drilling Fluids, they found a 25,000 sq. foot warehouse fully involved in a fire.

The warehouse contains multiple chemicals, so firefighters established a defensive fire attack operation to control the fire and protect the public. All products and runoff were confined to the property, and no citizens were at risk.

From a Google Maps estimate, approximately a half mile worth of hose had to be used for the fire and subsequent control efforts.

When the first fire crews arrived, they reported the first floor of the house was full of smoke and a bedroom was engulfed in flames. The fire has also spread to the roof.

Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus entered the property and extinguished the blaze.

Watch Manager Martin Cable, Maldon Fire Station, said:

"This fire has caused extensive damage to the house and the occupants will not be able to live there for some time - there is a lot of damage to repair.

"The fire started in the bedroom where a vape, which was plugged into a charger, was left on the bed unattended. The vape overheated and caught the bedding and mattress alight. The fire then spread around the bedroom.

"Incidents like this show how important it is to think about how you should charge your electrical items safely. We advise that you only use a reputable charger, and not a cheap alterntive which are often not tested or conform to safety standards. We also urge people not to leave any electrical items charging unattended and to place the items on a fire resistant surface, not a bed or sofa which are much more flammable."

State public health officials and experts are increasingly concerned about residents’ chronic exposure to toxin-filled smoke.
This year has seen the most wildfires of the past decade, with more than 59,000 fires burning nearly 7 million acres nationwide, according to the National Interagency Fire Center. Although the total area burned is less than in some recent years, heavy smoke has still blanketed communities throughout the country.
Climate change is causing more frequent and severe wildfires, harming Americans’ health, said Lisa Patel, deputy executive director of the Medical Society Consortium on Climate and Health, which raises awareness about the health effects of climate change.
“The data we have is very scary,” she said. “We are living through a natural experiment right now — we’ve never had fires this frequently.”

Firefighters quickly knocked down the small blaze ignited by the mineral — a water reactive material — after it got wet and started the combustion process, said Acting Deputy Fire Chief Adam Roche.

During the combustion process, Roche said, there was a release of hydrogen cyanide, prompting a Tier 1 hazmat incident that was ultimately canceled.

The building, plant No. 8, was evacuated and several employees and a firefighter underwent decontamination.

Children in the crowd shouted answers to the questions Biberdorf asked as she kept them engaged and energetic through an hour of science experiments.
“This is my last stop on the tour, and it’s the only stop where they’re going to let me play with fire,” Biberdorf said. “Are you excited?” Her question was followed by cheers and applause.
First, Biberdorf introduced herself and her background. She told the audience about the 10th grade chemistry teacher whose passion and energy inspired 15-year-old Biberdorf to become a chemist. After earning her Ph.D. in inorganic chemistry and starting as a professor at The University of Texas at Austin, Biberdorf was itching for more to do. With her boss, she designed an outreach program called Fun With Chemistry.
“I would go out to local Austin schools and blow stuff up and try to get kids excited about science,” Biberdorf said.
This led to Biberdorf doing a monthly television segment, which then led to her getting picked up as “the next Bill Nye” and the birth of her brand, Kate the Chemist.

Chandigarh: A massive fire tore through a liquor bottling plant in Industrial Area, Phase I, on Thursday.
Around two dozen workers were in the factory when the blaze broke out at 2.07 pm, the time fire and emergency services department of the municipal corporation (MC) received the call. All the workers were pulled out safely. One worker received minor burn injuries. He was taken to Government Medical College and Hospital, Sector 32.
A hydraulic vehicle, fire tenders and water boozer were rushed to douse the flames. But the intensity of the fire forced the MC to take the help of fire tenders of Mohali, Panchkula and 3 BRD Air Force station. Over dozen fire tenders made multiple rounds while 40 to 50 firemen were on the job. The operation was continuing till the filing of this report late in the night. The exact reason of the fire could not be ascertained.
Sources said a huge amount of liquor and chemicals were stored in the factory, helping to spread and strengthen the fire that made things difficult for the firemen. Since the fire covered the entire factory from all the sides, JCB machines were called to break some temporary tin sheds and other parts of the factory to ensure water reached the building in high pressure in order to control the blaze. All material like drums, articles and other wooden and plastic items were gutted. Luckily, the fire did not spread to adjoining building and factories.

A science experiment of Grade 7 students at Awao National High School in Davao led to a fire accident with three students suffering from third-degree burns.

In Sunday's episode of "Kapuso Mo, Jessica Soho," student Bemboy Montanez narrated how the fire started during their class' experiment session.

("Salt was put in the water, sir mixed it. He took the bottle then he put some alcohol in the stove, then it exploded.")

As soon as the fire started, he said that his teacher went to him and hugged him.

("Our clothes caught on fire, sir approached me and hugged me.")

Aside from Bemboy, another student, Edwin Rebleza Jr., had the worst injuries from the accident. His face, neck, arms, hands, chest, and tummy were all scalded.

("I was in front and two of my classmates were beside me. I rolled on the ground and caused the chair to fall because the fire was spreading on my clothes.")

Edwin pleaded to hospital staff to be gentle with him during his treatment due to the pain caused by the third-degree burn.

According to one of Edwin's classmates, Cyril, Edwin sprayed alcohol on his uniform during the experiment because he wanted to smell good.

When Edwin was asked if he thought the alcohol caused the malfunction of the experiment, the seventh grader admitted that he had no idea.

("I don't know. When I moved away, I stepped back slightly. The fire spread suddenly on my face.")

Prof. Laurenzo Alba, a chemist professor at De La Salle University, said that the experiment they were trying to do was possibly to vaporize the salt solution.

("It is to demontrate that salt gets left behind when water becomes water vapor by boiling.")

The chemist also added that ethyl alcohol and isopropyl alcohol, two of the most common ingredients in a science lab, are flammable.

An investigation found that during the distillation process, an employee accidentally ignited ethanol vapors which caused the fire.

That employee suffered severe upper body burns and has since been transported to Denver for treatment of those injuries.

BFD says the fire was contained to the distillation room, which has charring on the walls and ceiling, and heat damage to the equipment.

There was about 500-thousand dollars worth of damage to the facility.

UPDATE: 2:13 P.M.

The following is a press release from the Billings Fire Department:

The Billings Fire Prevention Bureau is investigating a fire that was reported at 3620 Duck Creek Road shortly after 9 a.m. on Tuesday.

When fire crews arrived on scene, they found smoke coming from a marijuana processing facility operated by dispensary company Elevated.

Part of the team prepared to attack the fire, while others tended to an employee who suffered severe upper body burns.

The victim was immediately taken to a local hospital for treatment. An update on the victim’s condition is not available.

The fire inside of the building was contained within 15 minutes.

Because marijuana processing facilities use flammable chemicals like butane and ethanol, firefighters had to take extra caution when battling the fire.

THREE RIVERS, Mich. — A butane explosion from a homemade lab used to manufacturing concentrated marijuana is the likely cause of a Three Rivers home explosion last month, according to investigators.

A 34-year-old man told police his arm caught fire when he went to investigate the explosion in the basement of 502 8th Street on Sept. 11, according to the Three Rivers Police report obtained through a Freedom of Information Act request.

Police discovered two large canisters of butane and seized items from the home indicative of a butane honey oil lab, detectives said.

Butane honey or butane hash oil is commonly extracted from marijuana plant material using butane, which is highly flammable and can cause explosions if ignited, according to detectives.

Officers discovered a blown off front door and blew down the rear wall when they responded to a report for a fire around 11:40 p.m., police said.

Portland fire crews first received reports of the warehouse fire around 4:30 in the 3600 block of N Suttle Road. Responding crews reported seeing a large smoke column from a distance and were told the building was in the process of evacuation when they arrived.

Plant workers informed crews of the hazardous materials inside the building adjacent where the fire was active. Because of the dangerous materials, a HazMat team was called to the scene.

Arriving crews found fire showing from the front of the building in and around the area of the oil pump. Early reports indicate that a failed hot oil system used in their operations caused the fire.

After a targeted attack on the exterior of the building, Portland fire said a more “methodical” approach was taken for the interior because of the hazardous materials. Crews faced concern with the risk of putting water onto substances that behave violently with water.

When entering the building, firefighters used gas monitoring devices to ensure the premises were safe. On entry, they discovered much of the fire was contained to the outside of the structure with very little damage to the inside of the warehouse.

Howmet supplies titanium alloys for the aerospace industry.

But because titanium dust is a magnesium-based product, it is highly flammable and it cannot be extinguished with water, according to Weathersfield fire Chief Tom Lambert.

The fire began in a vacuum hose when a contracting company was removing dust particles from a hopper in the plant. The flames moved from the hose back into the plant area, damaging some equipment, according to Lambert.

The plant contacted Trumbull County 911, which contacted the Weathersfield Fire Department at 8:09 a.m. Fire departments in Lordstown, Niles and Howland responded to the emergency call.
