As many as seven people were injured after a fire broke out in a private pharmaceutical lab in Atchutapuram Industrial Special Economic Zone, in the Anakapalli locality of Visakhapatnam, police said on Friday. "At about 11:10 am, in a pharmaceutical lab, when a solvent was being loaded into a container, some short circuit occurred and the solvent exploded. There were 35 people working, and 7 were injured. The injured have been shifted to the hospital," ASP PSN Rao, Anakapalli told ANI.
[{852cfdfb-cfc3-4bf3-a0ec-004422cfbc91:intradmin/ANI-20230630120903.jpg}] "Precautionary measures are being taken and the fire tenders are here. The fire will be brought under control, ' he added.
Upon receiving information about the fire, police teams and fire tenders rushed to the site. The fire was caused due to a sudden reactor blast, according to the Superintendent of Police, Anakapalli Murali Krishna.
District Fire Officer, Lakshman Rao, said that eight fire tenders rushed to the spot and four more are on the way. The operation is still underway, as the fire is still not doused at the lab.

An explosion at a Seqens chemical plant in Newburyport, Massachusetts, early on Thursday, May 4, killed one worker. The cause of the explosion has not been determined.
The incident is the third serious accident at the plant, which manufactures pharmaceutical chemicals under contract, since 2020 when an explosion damaged a building. A chemical fire occurred at the site in 2021.
The body of Jack O’Keefe, an employee at the company for more than 25 years according to a local news report, was removed from the site late Thursday afternoon. Four other workers on site when the explosion occurred were hospitalized for precautionary reasons, but were uninjured, according to Barry Salt, Newburyport deputy fire chief.
“They had just wrapped up a typical manufacturing procedure that they’d done numerous times daily,” Salt says. “Obviously there was some sort of accident to cause the explosion, but what that was or how that happened is still in the beginning stages of investigation.”
The plant manufactures both active ingredients and intermediates of pharmaceutical chemicals. Chemicals on site at the time of the accident, according to Salt, included acetone, isopropyl alcohol, and methanol.
Salt says air quality has been monitored by the Massachusetts Department of Fire Services beginning 1.5 h after the explosion. Local residents have been informed that there is no risk in the area.
The area of the plant damaged in the explosion has been in operation for more than 20 years. The facility was built in the 1980s. Novacap, a French firm now called Seqens, became the site’s owner when it bought PCI Synthesis in 2018.

DMT — or N, N-dimethyltryptamine in medical talk — is a hallucinogenic tryptamine drug.

Sometimes referred to as Dimitri, this drug produces effects similar to those of psychedelics, like LSD and magic mushrooms.

DMT is a Schedule I controlled substance in the United States, which means it’s illegal to make, buy, possess, or distribute it.

Some cities have recently decriminalized it, but it’s still illegal under state and federal law.5.

DMT is a newly arrived narcotic to the San Diego area.

Burson, CA – Wednesday’s Meadow Fire in Burson is now being blamed on an illegal butane honey oil lab.

According to investigators, the Calaveras County Sheriff’s Office began getting a flood of calls around 1:15 p.m. reporting an explosion, which was heard and felt throughout the Burson area. As earlier reported here, once on the scene, Columbia air and ground resources began battling an outbuilding, house, and vegetation fire. The grass fire grew to nine acres before crews were able to extinguish it, and both structures were heavily damaged.

“It was observed that materials within the outbuilding continued to burn despite fire suppression efforts,” detailed Lt. Stark.

The Sheriff’s Office Marijuana Enforcement Team (MET) also responded to the area and conducted a preliminary investigation of the scene. Lt. Stark added, “Sheriff’s MET investigators observed objects and material within the burning structures consistent with equipment and material used for an illegal butane honey oil lab (BHO).”

A great number of dose–response studies indicate that hormesis is a common phenomenon, occurring in numerous organisms exposed to singular or combined environmental stressors, such as pharmaceuticals, heavy metals, micro/nanoplastics, organic flame retardants, pesticides, and rare earths. (1−6) While biological responses to low exposure levels are often beneficial, exposure to doses below the no-observed-adverse-effect-level (NOAEL; hereafter subthreshold doses) does not always translate to beneficial responses. (2,4) For example, subthreshold contaminant doses can enhance the virulence of phytopathogenic microbes and promote the resistance of crop pests with significant implications for crop production. (2,7,8) Subthreshold contaminant exposures can also stimulate infectious animal/human pathogens and promote their resistance to antibiotics and other drugs, threatening long-term sustainability. Importantly, the hormetic function of common pathways that regulate cancer progress indicate that current regulatory standards may not protect adequately against cancer risks. (9−11)

Current risk assessment frameworks used around the world to assess exposure and effects are largely based on scientific developments from the mid to late 20th century, which frequently included only very high (often environmentally unrealistic) doses and the broad assumption of linearity in the response in the absence of evidence of alternative dose–response relationships (Figure 1). (12−16) How representative and realistic this approach is increasingly being challenged, in a modern era of analytical advances enabling measurement of low doses and hormetic responses. An expanding scientific literature provides evidence of significant effects of subthreshold contaminant doses on numerous animals, plants, and microbes. (1−6) We opine that regulatory risk assessments on exposure and effects should not be based upon outdated science and biologically unsupported assumptions regarding linearity. Instead, subthreshold effects and dose–response behavior should be included in the regulatory risk assessment. We urge for this approach to be adopted as part of a more real-life risk simulation approach, (17) especially in recognition of the growing evidence of genotoxicity of chemicals such as fluoride and arsenic. (18,19)

A synthesis platform dubbed Allchemy has identified several drugs and agrochemicals that can be made from chemical waste streams. After predicting feasible synthetic routes, the program applies environmental, economic and geographic considerations to rank the reactions and even suggests greener alternatives to the known pathways. The software was successfully tested in an on demand drug manufacturing system.

‘By carefully limiting the extent of chemical space and ranking the synthetic routes that traverse it, this methodology allows millions of potential products to be analysed in terms of value and sustainability,’ comments Frank Glorius at the University of Münster in Germany who wasn’t involved in the study. ‘Building on such an analysis, new circular processes can be developed that save resources and reduce emissions.’

‘Historically, the emphasis has been put on making stuff, and few people have cared about what to do with all the junk left as a by-product,’ says Bartosz Grzybowski of the Polish Academy of Sciences and Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology, South Korea, one of the creators of Allchemy. He mentions that it’s been difficult to come up with creative and economically sound ideas of the kinds of products that can be made from waste. ‘There are so many ways in which these substances can react that finding productive and useful syntheses is like searching for a needle in a haystack.’

Tension prevailed at Akkireddygudem in Eluru district on Monday as villagers staged a dharna demanding that the Porus Laboratories Private Limited, where six workers died and 12 others suffered burns in a fire mishap on April 13, be permanently shut down.

The Andhra Pradesh Pollution Control Board (APPCB) has already ordered a temporary closure of the chemical factory following the mishap.

When Joint Collector P. Arun Babu, Assistant Collector T. Rahul Kumar Reddy and other officers visited the drug manufacturing unit on Monday to conduct an inquiry following the orders of District Collector V. Prasanna Venkatesh, hundreds of villagers thronged the factory and raised slogans demanding its permanent closure.

The villagers alleged that toxicants from the factory were causing severe health problems and demanded that action be taken against the management immediately.

According to him, chemicals that were developed at the organic chemistry lab over the past 10 years and used for research have been destroyed.
The fire that broke out on the first floor of the 87-year-old institute gutted the laboratory whose in-charge was Ranjan Jana, principal scientist, organic and medicinal chemistry.
According to institute director Arun Bandyopadhyay, the scale of damage is so severe that it could take several months to rebuild the lab.
Another IICB official said Jana had been working at that lab over the past 10 years and he, along with his team, developed several chemicals that were critical to research.

The 250 sq feet lab on the first floor of a building at the institute’s Jadavpur campus was being used for research on an antiviral drug against Covid-19.
The IICB officials, however, hope that the project will not get hampered as the institute has another well-equipped chemical lab.
Around seven PhD scholars were working in the lab when the fire broke out on Monday. Different chemicals were stocked up in the lab, so the fire spread in no time. Officials said that the lab did not have expensive instruments.
“Ten fire tenders were pressed into the action to douse the blaze. There was a cylinder blast. The cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained,” said fire and emergency services minister Sujit Bose.

The cause of the boiler explosion is being investigated. The blast destroyed temporary units that the company had put up a few metres away from the boiler complex. While listed as storage in plans, it transpires that employees and their families were living there, in violation of local regulations. The mother and daughter were inside when the units collapsed. The other two victims were operators in the boiler room.

On 25 December, two directors of Canton Laboratories were arrested and charged with culpable homicide not amounting to murder. The company makes fine and speciality chemicals, supplying a range of industries from pharmaceuticals to electronics and photography.

Eight years ago, a team of researchers launched a project to carefully repeat early but influential lab experiments in cancer research.

They recreated 50 experiments, the type of preliminary research with mice and test tubes that sets the stage for new cancer drugs. The results reported Tuesday: About half the scientific claims didn’t hold up.

"The truth is we fool ourselves. Most of what we claim is novel or significant is no such thing,” said Dr. Vinay Prasad, a cancer doctor and researcher at the University of California, San Francisco, who was not involved in the project.

It’s a pillar of science that the strongest findings come from experiments that can be repeated with similar results.

In reality, there’s little incentive for researchers to share methods and data so others can verify the work, said Marcia McNutt, president of the National Academy of Sciences. Researchers lose prestige if their results don’t hold up to scrutiny, she said.

UPDATE 6:15 P.M. -- In a release, Peoria Police said officers were dispatched around 5:26 p.m. Monday to the 500 block of Haungs Avenue where officers noticed a strong smell of ammonia chemicals coming from a nearby alley.

Officers observed a man entering a camper parked in the back of the property where two people were inside. Officers noticed the smell was coming from the back of the camper as they approached.

Police blocked off the alley of Madison leading to Haungs, according to the release, and a perimeter was established around the home to prevent any injuries to the public if a chemical explosion occurred.

Officers noticed two men exit the back of the residence -- one man ran away when officers made contact but was subsequently caught and arrested for an active warrant.

Illinois State Police advised Peoria Police that there was a suspected meth lab on the property, but it is believed one of the suspect(s) that fled from the residence took the mobile lab with them.

In addition to Miller, Michael T. Lorance, 35, and Paul M. Salamon, 37 were also arrested -- Lorance for a Peoria County warrant and Salamon for a parole violation warrant.

Police located one gram of a substance that was later determined to be meth.

A thunderous explosion rocked the building, which housed vape and marijuana accessories wholesalers, during the massive fire in May. Firefighters on the roof scrambled down ladders through the blaze, with their protective coats aflame.

The gas leak incident at Sainor Life Sciences Private Limited is another one in a series of mishaps that happened in the past decade.

Blame it on human negligence or lack of safety measures, mishaps at pharma units continue to happen in the City of Destiny.

But every time a mishap happens, a committee will be constituted to investigate into the reasons behind the accident. However, nothing concrete would come out later until the incident would be long forgotten.

For the last eight years, over 40 had lost their lives in about 30 accidents that occurred at pharma city and hundreds were hospitalised.

The Pharm companies, including Azico Biophore, Glochem Industries, Vishnu Chemicals, Vimal Drugs along with Sainor Life Sciences Private Limited recorded a total of 20 deaths earlier. While repeated accidents occurred in some pharma companies claiming lives, in 2015, two were charred to death and four were injured in a reactor blast at the same Sainor Life Sciences Private Limited.

They arrived on-scene on Wednesday, February 5th, 2020 at 2:53 PM, and discovered a large marijuana grow operation.

“Dispatch notified the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) who sent members to the location to assess the incident. While there, SIU developed information on the suite next to the primary location which led investigators to believe that a “Honey Oil Lab” was active and related to the marijuana grow,” said Special Investigation Unit (SIU) Sergeant Scott Hess.

SIU notified L.A. County Fire Dept.’s HAZMAT Unit, who verified the SIU team’s findings. “SIU authored a multi-location search warrant for the violations,” said Sgt. Hess

Search warrants were executed throughout the night, and continued into the wee hours of the morning. The results included a “large marijuana grow operation and a a sophisticated Honey Oil Lab.”

Officers were sent to the 2500 block of South Second Avenue at about 10:50 p.m. Monday to check out a report of a car that had crashed into a home. They didn’t find any sort of collision – but they did find there had been an explosion at the home.

The officers’ preliminary investigation found the explosion was possibly related to a cannabis extraction lab. Hazardous materials were also found inside the home, so a hazmat team was called to the scene and nearby residents were briefly evacuated until it was deemed safe.

One man was taken to the hospital with burn injuries.

The industrial chemist from Warriewood was a director of the business, which produced chemical solutions including cleaning agents. But an explosion in a lab at the company headquarters would land Raheb in jail, shining a light on a criminal enterprise using legally obtained chemicals as precursors in the manufacture of drugs.

Sami Raheb will be eligible for parole next year.

Authorities have historically targeted criminal organisations importing ready-made illicit drugs but criminal groups are taking advantage of industries that legally import chemicals for legitimate use.

From medical facilities to cleaning companies, schools and universities, organised crime is increasingly targeting genuine industries to obtain precursors to make drugs like ice and ecstasy.

This is what National Poison Centre statistics have found, said the centre's pharmacist (drug and poison information unit) Asdariah Misnan.

Sixty six percent of cases recorded during the 10-year period comprised accidental poisoning involving household chemical products (33%) and medicines (33%).

Among the accidental cases, 46% involved children aged one to nine.

The household chemicals include laundry detergent and bleach, as well as dishwashing liquid, she told Bernama when met at the centre at Universiti Sains Malaysia recently.

Fifty percent of all cases involve children, with the centre receiving calls about such poisoning cases on a daily basis.

The man, who has not been identified, was attempting to cook meth in the kitchen, according to police.

Police said they were contacted just after 6 p.m. Friday by the man's girlfriend, who sought to file a domestic assault and battery complaint against the man.

The woman told police it was the result of an argument after she had arrived home to find her boyfriend trying to make a small amount of meth using cold medicine and other ingredients.

Believing there may have been dangerous chemicals inside the home, police called in the town's fire department and a hazmat team from the R.I. Department of Environmental Management to secure the scene.

Lewis says crews found a number of chemicals inside the duplex originally thought to be the makings of a meth lab.
According to Lewis, it is "not a meth lab but we still don't know what it is."
Lewis says "the name of the game now is cleanup."
"There are a number of chemicals, each of which are precursors to certain drugs," Lewis tells NewsChannel 9.
The BCSO does have one individual in custody.
There is no immediate danger to surrounding homes.

The next time you feel a headache coming on, take a moment before popping a painkiller and remember this: that drug will persist in the environment long after its traces have left your body. New research from the IHE Delft Institute for Water Education has found high concentrations of pharmaceuticals in river systems around the world. The research was presented to scientists at the European Geosciences Union in Vienna this week. The Guardian reports:

"A large number of drugs – analgesics, antibiotics, anti-platelet agents, hormones, psychiatric drugs, antihistamines – have been found at levels dangerous for wildlife. Endocrine disruptors, for example, have induced sex changes in fish and amphibians."
The research team, led by Dr. Francesco Bregoli, developed a method to track drug pollution hotspots, using a common anti-inflammation drug, diclofenac, "as a proxy to estimate the presence and spread of other medications in freshwater ecosystems." Bregoli and his team found that more than 10,000 kilometres (6200 miles) of rivers contain diclofenac at quantities higher than the 100 nanograms per litre limit suggested by the EU; and that veterinary use of diclofenac has led to the near-extinction of a species of vulture on the Indian subcontinent.

On current trends, the amount of pharmaceutical effluence leaching into waterways could increase by two-thirds before mid-century, they told a major science conference in Vienna.
"A large part of the freshwater ecosystems is potentially endangered by the high concentration of pharmaceuticals," said Francesco Bregoli, a researcher at the Delft Institute for Water Education in the Netherlands, and leader of an international team that developed a method for tracking drug pollution "hotspots".
A large number of drugs found in the environment—analgesics, antibiotics, anti-platelet agents, hormones, psychiatric drugs, anti-histamines—have been detected in nature at levels dangerous for wildlife.
Endocrine disruptors, for examples, have notoriously induced sex changes in fish and amphibians.

Memphis Police Chief Dan Kolke said he was on routine patrol at noon Thursday when he was flagged down by a pair of employees from Emterra Environmental USA, the city’s trash hauler.

The Emterra employee told Kolke he had just picked up two smoking bags of garbage from a home on Main Street.

“He said he put the bags on the tail board of the truck because they couldn’t be placed inside the vehicle in case of a fire,” Kolke said.

Looking inside of the bags, the chief found two 20-ounce plastic pop containers filled with a white substance.

Kolke went to the residence where the garbage collector said he picked up the bags. A woman who answered the door said she did not live at the residence and was just putting out the trash for the man who did.

Hilltown Sgt. Christian Browne said Sunday that the incident is still under investigation and pending test results it is still unclear if the dangerously potent opioid is what made the three first-responders feel ill at the scene of a suspected heroin overdose.

Browne said the call, which initially was reported as an unspecified medical emergency in the 600 block of Orangewood Court in the Orchard Hill development in Hilltown, came shortly after 9 p.m.

A woman in her 40s was found in cardiac arrest and was given a dose of Narcan, an anti-overdose medication. She was transported to Grand View Hospital in West Rockhill and her condition is unknown.

The Hilltown officer and the two firefighters, who are also trained as EMTs, reported feeling ill at the scene and also were taken to the hospital.

They were treated and released by Sunday morning.

The deceased was identified as Avinash of the village. The villagers expressed anger over the factory management for setting up the plant without displaying any name and details of operations and were shocked with the explosion which triggered panic among them.

The five injured workers were rushed to a nearby private hospital soon after they were rescued from the spot after the explosion. In fact, the local people blamed the management that it had announced earlier that they would be setting up an ayurvedic pharmaceutical company but now they find carcasses of animals with quite unhygienic conditions prevailing at the plant which turned out to be a bone milling unit.

There is bad odour emanating from the plant frequently, they complained. Recently, some villagers of Meganuru lodged a complaint with local tahsildar asking how an ayurvedic pharma company has been maintaining unsanitary conditions and raised doubts over its operations.

More than 70% of Americans take some form of dietary supplement. Yet these increasingly popular products typically don’t undergo U.S. Food & Drug Administration safety testing or approval before they hit the market, a lax requirement that may merit reevaluation, according to a recent study (J. Med. Toxicol. 2017, DOI: 10.1007/s13181-017-0623-7).
In the study, researchers evaluated data collected from 2000 to 2012, finding that calls to U.S. poison control centers reporting dietary supplement exposures doubled during the period, to total about 275,000 calls. The majority of those exposures occurred in children younger than age six. Often, parents don’t think of supplements as dangerous and leave them within reach of curious children, says Henry Spiller, director of the Central Ohio Poison Center and coauthor of the new study. But when it comes to safety, parents should treat them like any other medicine, he says.
Although most of the exposures over the 13-year period had relatively benign effects, 4.5% of the reported exposures resulted in serious medical outcomes. These adverse effects were linked to a few main categories of supplements: energy products, cultural medicines such as Ayurvedic treatments, and botanicals such as ephedra, which was once marketed for weight loss, heightened alertness, and improved athletic performance.

fifth of male fish are now transgender because of chemicals from the contraceptive pill being flushed down household drains, a study by has suggested.

Male river fish are displaying feminised traits and even producing eggs, the study found. Some have reduced sperm quality and display less aggressive and competitive behaviour, which makes them less likely to breed successfully.

The chemicals causing these effects include ingredients in the contraceptive pill, by-products of cleaning agents, plastics and cosmetics, according to the findings.

Many other chemicals that are discharged through sewage treatment works can affect fish, including antidepressant drugs that reduce the natural shyness of some fish species
Professor Charles Tyler
Professor Charles Tyler, of the University of Exeter, is to present his findings in a key-note lecture at a symposium this week. He will explain that the offspring of such "transgender" or "intersex" fish can also be more sensitive to the effects of these chemicals in subsequent exposures.

Professor Tyler said: "We are showing that some of these chemicals can have much wider health effects on fish that we expected.

"Using specially created transgenic fish that allow us to see responses to these chemicals in the bodies of fish in real time, for example, we have shown that oestrogens found in some plastics affect the valves in the heart."

Tests showed 20 per cent of male freshwater fish, such as roach, at 50 sites had feminine characteristics.

More than 200 chemicals from sewage plants have been identified with oestrogen-like effects and drugs such as antidepressants are also altering fish's natural behaviour, his study found.

"Other research has shown that many other chemicals that are discharged through sewage treatment works can affect fish, including antidepressant drugs that reduce the natural shyness of some fish species, including the way they react to predators," Professor Tyler said.

As was her routine, store manager R Padma was doing her morning prayers when the two men entered the store. They asked her for handkerchiefs and started a conversation with her. They told her that she should take out her jewels in the morning and pray as it would help business.

They selected six handkerchiefs and Padma handed over the kerchieves and asked for Rs 180. “The men gave her Rs 200 and while he was giving her the note, he rubbed it against her palm and fingers,” said V Radhakrishnan, Padma’s brother.

“There was some chemical on the note which made her blank out completely. She has absolutely no recollection of what happened after that – whether she gave them the jewels or if they stole it themselves.” About five or ten minutes later, Radhakrishnan said she was back to senses and immediately called for help.

WINTERVILLE, N.C. (WNCT) – Spring cleaning gone wrong, that’s what happened when a Pitt County family decided to clear out their parent’s attic. The Dunn’s found some old bottles that sent everyone into a panic.

“We decided to clean out the attic a little bit…just to see what was in there,” Carl Dunn said.

The family found unmarked old school medicine containers.

Dunn said, “Next thing you know you’re coughing and wheezing and everybody said let’s get out of here.”

Firefighters, donning PPE and SCBA’s went into the attic to remove the contaminated flooring that the bottles were both on (they were already outside when responders arrived). Without any markings or labels on the bottles, determining the contents was extremely difficult, fire officials said. It also made treating the patients that inhaled the substance difficult. In tandem with the County Emergency Management, North Carolina RRT-1 (regional state hazmat team), members of Winterville Fire-Rescue-EMS, and Pitt County Public Health officials, fire and EMS crews worked to properly treat the patients and determine a course of action for each bottle. It’s believed that both of the bottles date back to the 1920’s or 1930’s.

Family members say they have an idea of where the bottles came from.

“It came from a drug store so it was possibly something that somebody drunk years ago, but whatever it was, it was an awful chemical smell that you could not really stand to be around,” Dunn said.

While this story has a happy ending with an interesting story to tell, the Dunn’s know there could have been a different outcome.

The bottles now sit in a shed behind the Dunn household in Winterville. The family plans to properly dispose of them in the next few days.

Recently, a PBS documentary about Rachel Carson's life made headlines. Her seminal work Silent Spring—which documented the detrimental effects of pesticides—still stands as a pillar of the modern environmental movement. But a new report suggests that science has been struggling to stay afloat in a rapidly growing sea of chemicals.

The study, published in the journal Frontiers in Ecology and the Environment, suggests that the research community is falling woefully behind in studying the chemicals, pesticides, pharmaceuticals and other novel concoctions seeping into our oceans, waterways, soil and food chain.

As Kieran Mulvaney at Seeker reports, new chemical compounds are produced at a rate of 10 million per year, which translates into 1,000 new ones synthesized every hour. Meanwhile, research funds have dried up, significantly dropping off since the 1990s as the problem with chemicals in the environment has grown.

“The amount and diversity of pesticides, pharmaceuticals and other industrial chemicals that humans are releasing into the environment are increasing at rates that match or exceed recent increases in CO2 emissions, nutrient pollution from nitrogen fertilizers and other drivers of global change,” Emily Bernhardt, biogeochemist at Duke University and lead author of the article says in a press release. “But our analysis shows we’re not spending anywhere near the amount of attention or money that we should be to assess their impacts.”

Despite a steady rise in the manufacture and release of synthetic chemicals, research on the ecological effects of pharmaceuticals, pesticides, and industrial chemicals is severely lacking. This blind spot undermines efforts to address global change and achieve sustainability goals. So reports a new study in Frontiers in Ecology and the Environment.
Emma J. Rosi, a freshwater ecologist at the Cary Institute and a co-author on the paper, explains, "To date, global change assessments have ignored synthetic chemical pollution. Yet these chemicals are increasing at a rate that is on par, or more rapid, than other agents of global change, such as CO2 emissions or nutrient pollution."
The study's team assessed global trends in synthetic chemical pollution since the 1970s and compared results to other drivers of global change. Then they surveyed leading ecological journals, U.S. ecological meeting presentations, and National Science Foundation grants for research on synthetic chemicals. Less than 1% of the journal articles, 1.3% of the presentations, and 0.01% of the NSF grants explored the environmental effects or fate of these chemicals.
Author Emily S. Bernhardt, professor of biogeochemistry at Duke's Nicholas School of the Environment, comments, "Research on the ecological impacts of synthetic chemical pollution has been static since the 1970s. But our portfolio of these manufactured chemicals keeps growing - with more than 80,000 now in use commercially. This knowledge gap is becoming a chasm, with real consequences for ecological health."

The Obama Administration’s update of a decades-old policy for reviewing U.S. biotechnology products, including genetically modified foods, is perhaps most notable for what it leaves out: a call for new regulations or mention of new gene-editing technologies such as CRISPR.
Released last week, the revision for the first time sets down in a single document the roles and responsibilities of the three agencies involved in regulating products of biotechnology, says Robbie Barbero, assistant director for biological innovation at the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP).
The Environmental Protection Agency regulates crop plants engineered to produce their own pesticides. The Agriculture Department has jurisdiction over crops produced with genetic parts of plant pests—a formerly common but now aging method of genetic engineering. And the Food & Drug Administration regulates animals that contain recombinant DNA as if the animals were drugs.
The agencies’ division of labor was first spelled out in 1986, when the Reagan Administration addressed the stream of new genetically manipulated products through the Coordinated Framework for the Regulation of Biotechnology. Instead of creating new laws explicitly regulating genetically modified products, the framework specifies which laws authorize the agencies to review such products. It was last updated in 1992.

The Sydney Grammar students reproduced the drug, Daraprim, used to treat a rare but deadly parasitic infection, in their high school laboratory with support from the University of Sydney and global members of the Open Source Malaria consortium.

Dr Alice Williamson, a postdoctoral teaching fellow with the university’s school of chemistry, said she could not stop dwelling on the story of Shkreli, who acquired Daraprim last year through his company, Turing Pharmaceuticals, and almost immediately and exorbitantly hiked the price. The drug is used to treat malaria and to prevent toxoplasmosis infection in people with HIV.

The move made him a public villain, a label he embraced as he also became known as “Pharma Bro”.

Heidi E. Schmidt, 44, was sentenced to 18 months of probation and ordered to undergo alcohol and drug counseling after pleading guilty in Cook County court to misdemeanor criminal damage to property. More serious charges, including aggravated arson, were dropped in exchange for her plea.

Authorities said Schmidt entered a bathroom stall at the Howard Street Target on June 8 and was mixing chemicals in a water bottle in an apparent attempt to get high, but a chemical reaction caused a small explosion. No one was injured, but the stall was damaged. A police bomb squad was called in to investigate, though officials said they were unable to determine the exact chemicals involved.

Police have said that, based on witness accounts and surveillance footage, Schmidt was inside the stall at the time of the incident.

These compounds, commonly found in consumer products and their packaging and associated with pharmaceutical and agricultural chemical use, can interfere with hormone function and contribute to the development of a variety of diseases and health problems.
The estimated costs equal roughly 2.3% of the U.S. gross domestic product. By comparison, earlier this year the team estimated that the same cost for the European Union is $217 billion, or about 1.3% of its gross domestic product (Andrology 2016, DOI: 10.1111/andr.12178).

The home then exploded around 7:30 a.m. as cops and firefighters were on scene. Several people were injured. The patients were taken to local hospitals. The FDNY did not immediately have information on their conditions. A neighbor described the moments after the blast. “It was a big explosion, big explosion,” Jay Soto, 57, told The Post. “Everyone came out and asked, ‘What was that?’ I could see that it was serious. The investigation led to criminal charges for Luther Dale Borders, 34, of Niles Township, the Berrien County Prosectuor's Office announced Monday. Borders has been charged with operating or maintaining a drug laboratory, manufacturing marijuana, maintaining a drug house and two counts of child abuse.

Police found what they believe were the remnants of a THC-extraction lab including empty butane fuel cans, a hot plate and vacuum pump. Marijuana was found in that vicinity and elsewhere in the home, according to a press release from the Berrien County Prosecutor's Office.

"Marijuana extraction, also called 'dabbing,' is a process by which THC, the active hallucinogenic ingredient in marijuana, is extracted using liquid butane. This process is extremely dangerous and has resulted in numerous explosions and fires nationally," the release said.

A Port Richey man, wanted for blowing up his house on Sept. 3 while attempting to cook butane hash oil, turned himself in to Pasco County authorities Monday.

Steven Brown, 24, faces more than 10 charges, including first-degree arson, several drug charges and two felony counts of aggravated cruelty to animals. He is being held at the Pasco County Jail with bail set at $795,100.

In what authorities called the first explosion due to cooking butane hash oil in Pasco County, Brown grabbed his drugs and ran out of the burning house at 6210 Westport Drive, leaving behind a 1-year-old baby and two caged dogs, deputies said. The baby was uninjured, deputies said, but the dogs died.

An arrest warrant for Brown was issued Sept. 9, but authorities were unable to locate him, deputies said. That same day, Brown evaded arrest by fleeing from a traffic stop in a white Kia Optima.

PASCO COUNTY, Fla. -- Pasco Sheriff's deputies are searching for a Port Richey man that started a large fire in his own house. After making butane hash oil (BHO), the flammable chemical reaction exploded.

Pasco County Sheriff's Office reported that Steven Brown, 24, and "other accomplices" were manufacturing BHO, also called marijuana wax, at his residence at 6912 Alta Vista Street on September 3. Following the explosion, the house caught fire, forcing Brown to save himself and the drugs on the property.

Steven Brown tried to make butane hash oil but started a fire that nearly destroyed his home and killed two dogs. He remains at large. Pasco Sheriff's Office photos

Harold Cope watched his neighbors home burn.

“The whole sky was lit up,” says Cope.

BHO is a potent concentrated form of marijuana that is used for the purpose of "dabbing," according to Complex. Making BHO requires marijuana to be combined with highly flammable butane to extract THC from the plant material. What is left behind is a substance that resembles ear wax.

China's ban on certain chemicals is being credited by Drug Enforcement Administration officials in a noticeable decrease in certain synthetic drugs in the United States.

Police encounters with six substances that were part of China's 115-chemical ban have dropped dramatically since it took effect in October, DEA numbers show.

Synthetic cannabinoids -- commonly known as K2 or spice -- stimulants similar to cocaine or MDMA and the notoriously dangerous synthetic known as flakka have fallen dramatically from they were last summer.

Flakka has all but disappeared from Florida, where it was wreaking havoc.

"We've definitely seen a significant decrease, especially of flakka," Broward County Sheriff's Lt. Ozzy Tianga said.

As a result, DEA officials say, they are optimistic that ongoing meetings with their Chinese counterparts can continue the trend. This month, 14 high-ranking DEA officials spent a week in Beijing and two other Chinese provinces, where they talked about how to work together to tackle the problem of Chinese chemists making and selling dangerous synthetic drugs in the United States.

DEA spokesman Russell Baer called it an "unprecedented dialogue between the two countries."
