BHOPAL: In a bizarre incident, three labourers who were cleaning floor tiles of a washroom at an under-construction site in Ayodhya Nagar, suffered severe injuries after the chemical with which they were cleaning the tiles suddenly caught fire.
It was suspected that one of the labourers lit a cigarette while cleaning the tiles with the chemical and the fire broke out, police said.
All three sustained severe burns and were rushed to hospital for treatment. One of them, a 22-year-old man, who had sustained 94% burns, died while undergoing treatment at AIIMS hospital on Saturday.

The store is located along the 4000 block of N Foster Road.
"It appears some cleaning liquids were accidentally mixed causing strong odor within the store requiring evacuation," Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar previously said around noon. "There is no chemical spill, the mixture is contained, however until the odor has been ventilated from the store, employees will remain outside."

The evacuation of a building in downtown Victoria was caused by two cleaning solutions being mixed together, according to the Cool Aid Society.

On Thursday afternoon, the Cool Aid Society's Swift House was evacuated by first responders, including firefighters, police, the Greater Victoria Emergency Response Team and CRD hazmat response technicians.

At the time, a witness told CTV News that someone dumped a potentially dangerous chemical inside the building.

On Friday, the Cool Aid Society said the cause of the evacuation was less dramatic.

"Yesterday, out of an abundance of caution, emergency response and hazardous materials teams were called to one of our sites because of a reaction caused by the mixing of two cleaning solutions," said the society in a statement.

"All residents and staff were evacuated so that a complete risk assessment could be conducted."

CALIFORNIA, USA — The parent company of TJ Maxx, Home Goods and Marshalls has been ordered by a state judge Friday to pay over $2 million for improperly disposing of hazardous waste in its California facilities.

TJX, a Massachusetts-based retail company with over 300 locations across the California, was sued in October by 38 California Counties — along with the city of Los Angeles and the City of San Diego — for improperly disposing of goods with hazardous materials into normal facility trash bins, which end up in municipal landfills.
Local facilities effected by the unlawful dumping are located in San Joaquin County, Stanislaus County, Tuolumne County and others.
These materials include batteries, aerosol products, electronic devices, cleaning agents, ignitable liquids and other flammable, reactive, toxic and corrosive materials as noted in court documents from the trial.
This violated numerous state health codes resulting high risk of environmental harm, according to the San Joaquin District Attorney's Office.

The Kanawha County Commission has been working with multiple agencies for months to get answers for those people and has now served a notice to the trucking company and driver involved in the crash.

"If they don't have the answers, who is doing what to get the answers to the questions that we have?" Collinsdale resident Melissa White asked.

White calls Paint Creek home. She has raised her children and grandchildren here for years, but the safety of her well water is uncertain.

"What effects could that have on us and on my grandchildren? They are babies," White said. "What effects does it have on them? You can't tell them, 'Oh, don't take a bath.' "

Last month, water samples found the chemical to be "non detectable" for more than a dozen hand-dug and shallow wells. Officials could not confirm that the wells were safe to drink from, so the Kanawha County Commission reached out to the DEP to see what else could be done.

Firefighters were dispatched to 6977 N. Austin Ave. at 2:53 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 15. Arriving firefighters found the worker moving the chemicals had spilled some of those fluids on his pants, which Feld said irritated the man’s skin. Feld said after consulting material data sheets on the chemicals, water was applied to the worker’s legs to stop the chemical burn. The chief said the worker did not require transportation to an area hospital.

An absorbent material was applied to the liquids on the concrete floor caused by the spill. Feld said the material was used to soak up the chemicals and prevent them from going down any drains. The building was ventilated to remove any lingering vapors.

cleaning products company and environmental activists are asking the US Environmental Protection Agency to require health and safety tests on polyvinyl alcohol (PVA). This water-soluble plastic is widely used to encase pods containing concentrated laundry and dishwasher detergents.
They are also petitioning the EPA to remove PVA from the Safer Choice program’s list of chemicals that the agency considers safer for human health and the environment than ingredients with similar functional properties. The EPA should keep PVA off this list until after manufacturers complete health and safety testing under the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA), the petition says.
The company filing the petition is Blueland, a cleaning products manufacturer that makes pressed-powder pods for home and personal-care products. Blueland’s products directly compete with PVA-based products. Joining Blueland is the nonprofit Plastic Pollution Coalition.
Citing a paper published in 2021, the petitioners say that although PVA dissolves in water, wastewater treatment doesn’t completely degrade the chemical. The material has significant potential to persist in waterways, oceans, and soils, they argue. Plus, PVA in aquatic ecosystems can mobilize toxics such as metals, pesticides, and flame retardants from sediments to waters, they say. One study found PVA particles, in addition to other types of microplastics, in human breast milk (Polymers, 2022, DOI: 10.3390/polym14132700)

A Santa Rosa Fire Department Hazmat Team spent six hours Friday working to mitigate a chemical spill from a truck parked outside a company that specializes in dishwashing and laundry systems.

The incident happened at about 2:50 p.m. outside Auto-Chlor at 27 Maxwell Court when numerous pallets containing 1-gallon and 2 1/2-gallon bottles of chemicals shifted and fell over inside a semitruck during transport, causing bottles to rupture, spill and emit a cloud of toxic gas, Battalion Chief Matthew Gloeckner said in a news release.

Upon arrival, responding fire units found the truck’s rear doors open and liquid leaking out the back.

The truck’s driver and an Auto-Chlor representative said the truck arrived for delivery, and when they opened the back of the truck there was a cloud of gas and a hissing sound.

The department initiated a full hazmat response and closed traffic for hours on Maxwell Court. Team members deployed a drone to fly inside the trailer to determine the problem. Then, wearing chemical protective suits with self-contained breathing apparatuses, team members went inside. They found 15 bottles had toppled over and spilled, Gloeckner said.

Six workers were hospitalized and another 100 were evaluated by medical personnel Thursday because of a chemical exposure at a power plant southwest of Houston.
A hazardous materials response team and other emergency personnel were dispatched to the W.A. Parish Generating Station near Richmond after multiple 911 calls were placed regarding a chemical exposure, according to a statement released Thursday night on Twitter by Fort Bend County Judge KP George. The chemical was initially feared to be ammonia but later determined to be a biodegradable cleaner and degreaser that was overly applied, according to the statement.
The six workers who were hospitalized – with symptoms including dizziness and difficulty breathing, according to Fort Bend County – had been released as of Friday morning, NRG Energy said in a statement provided to Houston Public Media. The local energy company, which owns and operates the power plant, said no hazardous materials had been released at the plant and "there is no danger to area residents or the public."
Ann Duhon, a spokesperson for NRG, said Friday that work is suspended in the part of the plant where the chemical exposure occurred. It is one of eight power-generating units at the plant – where four are coal-fired and four are gas-fired – and has been offline and undergoing cleanup after it was damaged by a fire in May.
"It's under investigation to determine the cause of the incident," Duhon said. "Work will not resume (in the impacted unit) until we determine the cause of the event and are confident all workers are safe."
NRG said it was notified at about 5:30 p.m. Thursday that contract workers who were using a cleaning agent in the fire-damaged unit reported an unusual smell. A total of 106 workers at the plant were subsequently evaluated on site by medical personnel, with six being taken to nearby hospitals, according to Fort Bend County.

The fire occurred at TransChemical, a company that works with consumer chemicals and ingredients used in food, drinks cosmetics and manufacturing.
In a press release, the company stated the fire began around 1:30 p.m. at the Transchemical Warehouse. The fire occurred in a section of the facility where they store and package different products.
TransChemical said in the press release that the fire did burn consumer chemicals that are generally used as cleaning agents for mechanical parts. They are not toxic, according to the company, and the smoke and fumes should not have any health effects to the community.
The fire was deemed a second-alarm fire and is almost out, according to Chief Jenkerson.
There were nine workers in the building at the time of the fire, all are accounted for and there are no reports of any injuries.

Franklin Fire Battalion Chief Joe Polenzani said the alarm was activated by a smoke detector in a resident’s room. Firefighters observed a haze in the room when they arrived, but upon investigation, determined it was caused by hazardous gas.

Polenzani said the hazardous gas was inadvertently created by an employee who mixed chlorine bleach and ammonia together in order to clean up fecal matter. Residents had already been evacuated to a safe area of the building due to the alarm when firefighters arrived.

Lodi Fire says their crews responded to the 2300 block of Maggio Circle for a Hazmat situation.

At the scene, crews discovered that a "mild corrosive cleaner" had spilled out of a machine.

About 60-75 gallons of cleaner was spilled.

The crash happened around 9:30 a.m. on state Route 76 at the intersection of North River Road, said North County Fire Protection District Capt. John Choi.

A Chevrolet Astro van rear-ended a Ford F-150 truck that was carrying one gallon of muriatic acid and one gallon of hydrochloric acid, Choi said. The truck was sandwiched between the Astro and another vehicle in front, he said.

The chemicals that spilled are corrosive and can burn the skin and eyes. If inhaled, they can inflame the eyes, nose and throat.

“No one was in danger of dying, but it’s something we have to mitigate properly,” Choi said.

MESA, AZ (3TV/CBS 5) - Garbage trucks in Mesa are catching fire, creating dangerous conditions for truck drivers and the community. City officials said there have been six garbage truck fires in the last two months because people are throwing away hazardous materials in the trash.

“We want residents to know that hazardous materials never should go in a trash or container,” said Mariano Reyes with the City of Mesa Environmental Management and Sustainability.

Items like batteries, aerosol cans, pool chemicals and propane gas tanks should be dropped off at the Mesa Hazardous Materials Facility. Reyes said even if they are empty, those items can catch fire or explode. “They can still contain enough liquid material in them that when they are compacted in our garbage trucks, it can actually cause an explosion,” said Reyes.

The facility even has a “swap shop” where people can drop off used hazardous items like paint, cleaning products and other chemicals that Mesa residents can pick up for free. The facility is open Wednesday through Saturday from 7 a.m. to noon. For a full list of items it accepts, click here.

In one, a resident was overcome by fumes and taken to the hospital for treatment after mixing Simple Green, a powerful cleaner and degreaser, and bleach, the department said.

In the second, a resident accidentally combined towels covered in acetone and bleach, resulting in a chemical reaction and fire. Luckily, according to fire officials, the resident got the burning towels outside and was able to put them out. There was only minor damage to a deck.

Fire officials warn that these chemicals alone, even used for their intended purposes, can be dangerous. Mixing them can cause unexpected and unpredictable results, they said.

GBAC and NOVA ambulances transported four people to Syracuse hospitals for treatment, said Chris Cullen, GBAC’s director of operations. No other information about the patients was immediately available.

Other Giovanni Food workers sat in their vehicles or stood in the parking lot while firefighters investigated the exposure. Firefighters determined someone had inadvertently mixed a “relatively small amount” of cleaning chemicals, said Tom Taranto, a past chief with Belgium Cold Springs Fire Department.

A Greenburgh shopping center is demanding nearly $360,000 from a former dry cleaning tenant to cover the costs of an environmental cleanup caused by a hazardous chemical spill.

Greenburgh Shopping Center Associates is demanding that Youn Do Hwang, the operator of Deb-Rich Cleaners, be held responsible for the cleanup under the federal Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation and Liability Act, in a complaint filed Dec. 20 in U.S. District Court, White Plains.

Debrich Cleaners Inc. was formed in 1970 by Jacob Rabinowitz, according to a state corporations record. In 1992, Debrich assigned the Deb-Rich Cleaners lease for 91 Knollwood Road to Hwang.

The lease required Hwang to cover the costs of waste disposal and nonstructural maintenance and repairs, according to the complaint. He agreed to assume responsibility for any damages to the property and to obtain $500,000 in liability insurance.

Hwang decided to close the business last year, and he allegedly hired an unincorporated, unregistered, unlicensed and uninsured contractor — Marcelo, doing business as N.Y.C. Scrap Metal Pickup — to remove property from the store.

As the work was being done on Dec. 1, 2020, Perc spilled inside the store, the complaint states, and seeped below the floor and into the soil beneath the building.

Perc, also known as perchloroethylene or tetrachloroethylene, is classified as a hazardous chemical that can affect the central nervous system and other organs.

The landlord says it responded immediately when it learned of the spill, hiring CA Rich Consultants to assess the extent of the chemical exposure and begin the cleanup and Emergi-Clean Inc. to remove contaminated soil and water.

District Attorney Joyce E. Dudley announced [this week] that the Consumer and Environmental Protection Unit of the Santa Barbara County District Attorney’s Office has reached a settlement with the Santa Maria-based fruit processing company, Titan Frozen Fruit, LLC (“Titan”), related to claims that the company failed to properly implement a Hazardous Materials Business Plan.

The case stemmed from an August, 2020 incident at the company’s facility, wherein two cleaning agents containing hazardous materials mixed, causing the release of chlorine gas within the facility. Santa Maria City Fire responded to the incident, and at least 5 employees were treated for symptoms related to their exposure to the gas.

When inspectors with Santa Barbara County’s Certified Unified Program Agency (“CUPA”) investigated the incident, they learned that the company’s Hazardous Materials Business Plan (“HMBP”) failed to account for the possibility of the chemicals coming into contact with one another during cleaning operations. As a result, the HMBP had no procedures in place to ensure cleaning did not occur simultaneously, nor did it account for how the chemicals should be stored to prevent them from mixing. Titan fully cooperated with CUPA’s investigation and the violations were quickly remedied.

Fire Chief Robert O’Brien said his department was notified of the incident at 11:08 a.m. Tuesday and that firefighters on Engine 4 and Rescue 1 from the Bradford fire station responded.

O’Brien said firefighters called in a state hazmat team under a Tier 1 response and the team neutralized the chemical, which he said was not dangerous. First responders were expected to clear the scene within an hour.

“Trinity Ambulance transported two patients to Lawrence General Hospital, one with glass in their eyes and another with minor burns to their hands,” O’Brien said. “Both are considered minor injuries.”

O’Brien said the workers were mixing a nitrous acid compound that is used to clean circuit boards when the pressurized glass container shattered.

At the Fusion Worldwide plant in Haverhill, a small glass bottle of cleaning solution material was mixed by a cleaning crew, then pressurized and broke, Haverhill Fire Chief Robert O'Brien told Patch. The spilled material let out potentially toxic chemicals, and one worker got glass in his eye while another got burned on his hands, O'Brien said.

Both workers were transported to Lawrence General Hospital by Trinity EMS, Haverhill Fire reported on Facebook. The building was evacuated as fire, police, and state hazmat teams investigated. As of 2 p.m. Tuesday, the building is still evacuated, O'Brien said. Though the Facebook post describe the incident as a "mass casualty event," O'Brien said that it was not.

Just after noon Tuesday, HFD reported on Facebook that the chemical appears to be contained.

According to the FFD, two cleaning products that were mixed together by an employee at The Lantern at Morning Pointe at 1015 Generations Way resulted in the response. Firefighters were dispatched at 9:30 a.m. for a commercial fire alarm activation.

Several dozen employees were evacuated from the Produce Connection facility on Audubon Road.

Employees complained about an odor coming from the machine used to clean organic fruits and vegetables. Because more than one person felt sick, firefighters evacuated the building as a precaution.

The hazmat team investigated for about three hours, but found no evidence of anything hazardous inside of the Produce Connection facility.

Kingston Fire & Rescue (KFR) was called to a private residence on Conacher Drive at approximately 10 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 15, 2021, after a tenant had mixed household cleaning products, creating a strong and toxic odour.

While KFR didn’t specify the household cleaners used, two materials commonly mixed in error with such noxious effects are bleach and ammonia, found in many cleaning products.

The Ontario Poison Centre explains what happens when common cleaning chemicals are mixed: “When bleach is mixed with acid (ex/ vinegar, toilet bowl cleaners) it creates chlorine gas. When bleach is mixed with an ammonia product, it creates chloramine gas. Both of these gases are very irritating to inhale and can cause coughing, chest tightness, wheezing and headache. If this occurs, ventilate the area (i.e. open a window) and move to fresh air. Call the Poison Centre right away for treatment advice.”

According to the City of Kingston, crews removed the products and used positive pressure to ventilate the interior. The chemicals were separated and set aside in a safe space.

CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — Crews with the Chesterfield County Fire Department battled a chemical fire that happened Sunday at Brandermill Country Club.

The fire broke out in a laundry room next to the main clubhouse around 11 a.m. Pool chemicals amplified the flames, and fire and hazardous materials teams were required to extinguish the fire.

Assistant Fire Chief Matthew Coffin praised the club’s staff for how they handled the situation, saying that quick notification of the situation kept the blaze contained to that one area of the clubhouse.

“Fortunately, all the things were done right to report quickly, to attempt to extinguish, and to make first responders aware of the potential hazards near the pool facility,” he said. “So we’re very grateful for all the efforts of staff on scene and there were no injuries as a result of operations here.”

The clubhouse will remain closed for the rest of the day, but staff are working to get back to normal operations as soon as possible.

Firefighters responded to a call for the smell of smoke in a corner apartment on the fourth floor of 355 Mass Ave, near the edge of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology campus and Kendall Square. But when they arrived on scene, they noticed an unusual smell.

"There were no difficulties fighting the fire. The difficulty was identifying the chemicals," Cambridge Assistant Fire Chief Thomas Cahill Jr. said.

It remains unclear what type of chemical was involved.

The substance — a disinfectant that had hydrogen peroxide in it — was an “irritant” to some employees and they were coughing, said Jason Karpovich, Branford Fire Department’s deputy chief of operations. They were brought to a hospital, he said.

The substance was Libman multisurface disinfecting cleaner, Karpovich said.

Oak Harbor Fire Chief Ray Merrill said firefighters from Oak Harbor Fire Department, North Whidbey Fire and Rescue and the Navy responded at 6:45 p.m. to a mobile home on fire at Parkwood Manor on Northwest Crosby Avenue.

They put out the flames in 30 minutes, but the home was a total loss.

“They burn very intensely, and there were a lot of hidden fires that we had to get to because of the construction of the mobile home,” Merrill said.

He said firefighters believe the fire began under the kitchen sink when one of the occupants mixed two kinds of drain cleaner. It set off a chemical reaction that sparked the fire.

A passenger jet had to make an emergency landing after an engine caught fire after it was sprayed with too much cleaning product, as found by the Air Accidents Incident Board (AAIB).

The incident took place as the aircraft was being moved from Gatwick Airport to Stansted on February 26, 2020.

Have you ever had a terrifying experience on a flight? Let us know in the comments below.

After spending just 11 minutes in the air the Airbus A321 was forced to make an emergency landing when the fire broke out.

Earlier in the day it had made a number of flights, including a journey to and from Krakow, Poland.

Throughout the day an engine had stalled several times but there were no major issues.

However, the AAIB report discovered an engineer had added 37 times too much of a chemical called Kathon.

Usually 1.6kg of Kathon is used to prevent engines being contaminated by microbes but in this case 60kg were added.

The report stated the engineer who was tasked with applying the chemical had not done the task before and incorrectly used an internet calculator to determine how much Kathon was required.

On arrival police cordoned off the road, while the firefighters and hazmat advisor assessed the situation and located the leaking 25l container.

The man who called in the incident was checked over by paramedics, after accidentally getting the fluid on his hands and shoes, but did not require hospital treatment.

Eventually the liquid was found to a concentrated cleaning solution, but as it had reacted with the road surface, thee fire service notified Stoke-on-Trent City Council and left the incident in their hands.

Stafford County Fire Chief Joseph Cardello said none of the injuries were considered life-threatening.

According to Cardello, first responders arrived at the jail about 2:30 p.m. after receiving notification that kitchen workers had mixed two separate caustic cleaning chemicals together, producing a toxic, chlorine gas vapor cloud within the facility.

Of the three jail staff members sent to the hospital, one suffered minor burns, the second complained of mild respiratory issues and the third had chest discomfort, Cardello said.

It's a move that allows the fire squad to ditch traditional chemical cleaners and sanitize medical equipment, computers, and any other hard surfaces in as little as 10 seconds.

In operation for just two weeks, the light has the potential to become a standard for sanitation in the department.

"I think it will always be an option from here on out just because we made the purchase and it would be irresponsible for us not to continue to use it," said Fire Captain Rik Valles. "But right now, the thing that's in our face is the COVID and this is how we're responding to it."

Accidental poisonings in the US have risen dramatically during the Covid-19 lockdown. They are up 20% in the first three months of 2020 compared with last year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). There were 45,550 calls related to exposure to disinfectant and cleaning agents, almost two-thirds of the incidents involving bleach and most of the others non-alcohol disinfectants and hand sanitisers. Often problems have arisen when people unwittingly or inadvertently mix different kinds of cleaning agents.

What potentially hazardous cleaning products are out there?
It’s a dirty job, but someone’s got to do it. Disinfecting, bleaching, wiping down – it might seem simple but if a job’s worth doing, it’s worth doing well. And during this time of heightened anxiety about Covid-19 with increasing attempts to clean and disinfect everything around us, making sure you get it right when using cleaning products has become more important than ever.

The report authors found that, from January to March this year, poison control centers received 45,550 calls related to cleaner and disinfectant exposure. That's up 20% compared with calls over the same period in 2019, according to the report, from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The report cannot prove for certain that the rise is due to people's cleaning efforts to prevent COVID-19, but it does show "a clear temporal association with increased use of these products," the authors said.

Overall, calls for exposures to bleach, non-alcohol disinfectants and hand sanitizers made up the biggest percentage of the increase from 2019 to 2020, the report found.
