SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico -- The Environmental Protection Agency on Monday ordered the owners of an oil refinery in the U.S. Virgin Islands to remove thousands of pounds of chemicals from the site, warning that its pipes and valves are severely corroded and in disrepair.

The EPA estimates that more than 40,000 pounds (18,000 kilograms) of anhydrous ammonia and more than 37,000 pounds (16,000 kilograms) of liquefied petroleum gas are stored at the refinery in St. Croix. It also ordered the removal of hydrogen sulfide.

The order comes after the EPA inspected the refinery in September and found serious deficiencies that could lead to a fire or chemical release, including piping and valves on LPG units that are severely corroded and in disrepair. Last month, the EPA announced the oil refinery could not resume operations without obtaining a clean air permit.

The refinery was forced to pause operations in May 2021 following an EPA emergency order, with the agency noting that the facility is located near marginalized communities where people have been sickened and schools forced to close.

THREE RIVERS, Mich. — A butane explosion from a homemade lab used to manufacturing concentrated marijuana is the likely cause of a Three Rivers home explosion last month, according to investigators.

A 34-year-old man told police his arm caught fire when he went to investigate the explosion in the basement of 502 8th Street on Sept. 11, according to the Three Rivers Police report obtained through a Freedom of Information Act request.

Police discovered two large canisters of butane and seized items from the home indicative of a butane honey oil lab, detectives said.

Butane honey or butane hash oil is commonly extracted from marijuana plant material using butane, which is highly flammable and can cause explosions if ignited, according to detectives.

Officers discovered a blown off front door and blew down the rear wall when they responded to a report for a fire around 11:40 p.m., police said.

Burson, CA – Wednesday’s Meadow Fire in Burson is now being blamed on an illegal butane honey oil lab.

According to investigators, the Calaveras County Sheriff’s Office began getting a flood of calls around 1:15 p.m. reporting an explosion, which was heard and felt throughout the Burson area. As earlier reported here, once on the scene, Columbia air and ground resources began battling an outbuilding, house, and vegetation fire. The grass fire grew to nine acres before crews were able to extinguish it, and both structures were heavily damaged.

“It was observed that materials within the outbuilding continued to burn despite fire suppression efforts,” detailed Lt. Stark.

The Sheriff’s Office Marijuana Enforcement Team (MET) also responded to the area and conducted a preliminary investigation of the scene. Lt. Stark added, “Sheriff’s MET investigators observed objects and material within the burning structures consistent with equipment and material used for an illegal butane honey oil lab (BHO).”

A Santa Rosa man is accused of endangering his young sisters by manufacturing butane hash oil, which caused their home to explode Sunday night, police said.

Cameron Lenzini, 22, was arrested in the 1000 block of Russell Avenue, where he lives with family including two children ages 7 and 12, according to the Santa Rosa Police Department.

He’s suspected of child endangerment, manufacturing drugs and causing a fire at an occupied building.

According to police, the explosion occurred as Lenzini was making butane hash oil in his garage.

Hash oil, also known as honey oil, has a high concentration of THC, which makes it much more potent than regular marijuana.

The fire first was reported in a company producing lab equipment due to a blast in an Liquified Petroleum Gas (LPG) cylinder which then spread to 12 other shops and small scale companies in the vicinity. The authorities confirmed that no one was injured in the fire.
The Regional Disaster Management Cell (RDMC) informed that nine blasts were heard in the area and the investigation as to the source of these blasts is still in progress.
Avinash Sawant, chief of RDMC said, “The fire was reported at 10.09 pm in Ambika Nagar area of Wagle Estate. There was a blast in an LPG cylinder in Silica Scientific, which produces raw materials for laboratories. We doused the fire in an hour and the cooling operation is in progress. Over 13 shops were gutted in the fire and we are yet to establish the damage. Once the cooling operation is completed, we will investigate further.”

Death in a Cannabis Lab: Italian Prosecutors Investigate Explosion

Prosecutors in Perugia, Italy are now trying to decide how to charge both owners and managers in a horrific industrial accident that killed two people and seriously injured two others. The incident occurred when a “laboratory,” which was set up to create “Cannabis Lite” from high THC cannabis, exploded.

Beyond the strange specifics, this kind of incident is certainly an anomaly in Europe—and not just because of the existence of cannabinoids in this process, but also what the manufacturers were trying to do to it. Not to mention how.

If this case sounds like Colorado, circa 2014, you would be right. In the first summer of state legalization, the Denver Department of Environmental Health ordered a recall from a manufacturer who had made hash in their washing machine to be sold commercially and “legally.” Thankfully, nobody died, and the owners displayed an ignorance that what they were doing was against public health guidelines.

Beyond this incident however, the danger of BHO extractions are an increasing menace in U.S. states where recreational cannabis is now legal. Inexperienced operators are using butane to make hash oil—and horrific accidents and explosions are on the rise.

About 130 firefighters in more than 25 trucks rushed to the scene at St Marys in a bid to contain the fire.
A 39-year-old worker was treated for serious burns to multiple areas of his body before being airlifted to Royal North Shore Hospital in a serious condition.

According to deputies, they were called to the home on the 16800 block of Claremont Street in Woodville shortly after 3:00 p.m. on Saturday. Witnesses described fire and smoke coming from the inside of the home and several people were hurt. Investigators established that the explosion was caused by a Butane honey oil laboratory.

Around an hour later, Sheriff’s office officials were informed that two severely burned men were admitted to Kaweah Delta Hospital – and both admitted to deputies that they lived at the same home where the explosion took place. They were both later airlifted to the hospital.

According to Sheriff’s office officials, a search of the residence found evidence of a honey oil lab, as well as approximately 105 lbs. of processed marijuana, nine illegal guns, and several illegal firearm magazines. Investigators also say there was evidence of illegally manufacturing firearms without serial numbers, also known as ghost guns.

At about 23:00 local time on 2 December, systems aboard the ship detected smoke in an electrical utility area, triggering automatic fire detection and management. The fire was extinguished, preventing further spread.

Production at the facility – which operates off the coast of Australia – is suspended until the main power is restored. Shell did not say when resumption is expected.

This news represents the latest setback in a series for the 488 m long ship, which has production capacity of 3.6m t/y of LNG, 1.3m t/y of condensate, and 0.4m t/y of LPG. This includes a previous electrical issue in February 2020, which halted production until January 2021. Operations started in December 2018.

Deputies said on Saturday night, there were multiple calls reporting a building on fire at a marijuana grow in the 6400 block of Butte Falls Highway near Eagle Point.

When first responders arrived at the scene they found a detached garage on fire near other structures.

According to the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office, the garage housed an illegal marijuana processing facility. It was reportedly fully engulfed in flames.

Next to the burning garage was an illicit butane honey oil laboratory. Butane honey oil, or “BHO,” is a concentrated form of marijuana that is highly potent in THC.

LOS ANGELES (CNS) - Authorities today were investigating whether butane canisters were being stored illegally in a three-story commercial building in downtown Los Angeles that was the site of a fire in June.

Firefighters were sent to 203 E. Third St. at 9:19 a.m. Wednesday to conduct a “followup ... and located a potentially illegal storage cache of butane canisters, some of which appear(ed) to be off-gassing,'' Margaret Stewart of the Los Angeles Fire Department said in a statement.

A hazardous materials team was sent to investigate, Stewart said.

“LAFD HazMat squad investigated and the situation is deemed ‘static' - - no immediate life or fire threat,'' Stewart said. “The scene will be turned over to L.A. County Dept. of Public Health and the building owner for the proper removal of the canisters.''

On June 8 at about 2 a.m., a fire was reported in the building. Video showed flames coming out of one side of the structure, spreading across the street and igniting tents and debris at a homeless encampment, and what sounded like several small firecracker-like explosions involving what authorities said were “pressurized gas cylinders.''

Fire Chief Ralph Terrazas said Tuesday that every fire station in Los Angeles would work to identify businesses similar to Smoke Tokes, an East 3rd Street wholesaler that went up in flames Saturday night.

An explosion there left a dozen firefighters injured, including several who were severely burned. Carbon dioxide and butane canisters were found inside the building, though investigators have yet to determine the cause of the blaze, authorities said.

“Those types of businesses pose a threat to the people who work there, the public that goes there, and firefighters if they have to respond there,” Terrazas said.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — An explosion Saturday at a hash oil manufacturer in downtown Los Angeles injured 11 firefighters who had gone inside the building after an initial report of a fire and then had to run for their lives when a ball of flames shot out the building and scorched a fire truck across the street.

Los Angeles Fire Department Capt. Erik Scott said “one significant explosion" shook the neighborhood around 6:30 p.m. Firefighters inside had to run through a wall of flames he estimated as 30 feet high and wide, and those on the roof scrambled down a ladder that was engulfed in fire.

He said people at the scene described the explosion as sounding like a freight train or jet engine. The fleeing firefighters tore off their protective equipment that had burned and helmets that melted, Scott said.

“The was one of the worst scene's I've seen," he said.

Scott said the building was a warehouse for SmokeTokes, which he described as a maker of “butane honey oil." Butane is an odorless gas that easily ignites, and it's used in the process to extract the high-inducing chemical THC from cannabis plants to create a highly potent concentrate also known as hash oil. The oil is used in vape pens, edibles, waxes and other products.

Firefighters and police responded to reports of an explosion at in the 400 block of South Euclid Street shortly before 10 p.m. and discovered a small fire outside one of the units, which was quickly extinguished, according to fire officials. A man was seen running from the location with extensive burns to his body, authorities said.

Several cans of butane gas were found in the back of one of the businesses, and it appeared someone was trying to extract honey oil from marijuana, Anaheim Fire and Rescue Capt. Mark Dunn told City News Service.

Investigators determined the explosion was caused when butane came in contact with an ignition source, according to the Anaheim Police Department.

Crews responded around 2:40 p.m. to a report of a residential fire at 714 S. Pacific Coast Highway, Redondo Beach Fire Department Division Chief Robert Rappaport told the Daily Breeze.

The man inside the unit came out with significant burns after chemicals he used for extracting cannabis oil exploded in the home, according to the Beach Reporter.

"Apparently, he told fire personnel treating him that he was working with butane and was extracting honey oil from marijuana he had inside," Redondo Beach Fire Chief Robert Metzger told the newspaper.

Investigators later found evidence of a butane honey oil explosion, leading to a criminal investigation by fire officials, police and hazardous materials experts, the Daily Breeze reported. More than 30 fire personnel were involved in battling the blaze, and the fire did not spread to other buildings, but some other units were damaged by the smoke. The fire was put out by 3:15 p.m.

Kenneth Dodson and James Jacques, both 57, were arrested this week on suspicion of running a butane honey oil lab on the 5100 block of Finning Mill Road in Foresthill, according to a news release from the Placer County Sheriff’s Department.

Butane honey oil is a concentrated form of marijuana that is commonly known as wax, honey or BHO. This form is produced through a chemical process using butane, a highly flammable substance.

The lab exploded and destroyed the building that housed the operation in December, the release said.

An explosion at a Santa Rosa home suspected of being a clandestine lab for making concentrated marijuana oil led to the arrest of a 64-year-old man, authorities said Tuesday.

The explosion occurred at 10:30 p.m. Sunday in the Larkfield neighborhood, 3 miles northwest of downtown Santa Rosa, according to the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies arrived to find the home’s resident, Thomas Tuttle, “wet, disheveled and confused from the blast,” said Sgt. Spencer Crum, a sheriff’s spokesman.

Authorities found marijuana, butane canisters and laboratory equipment that led them to believe Tuttle was operating an illegal lab in his garage to process “honey oil,” or concentrated marijuana, Crum said. A refrigerator had been blown apart by the blast, along with a damaged fence.

Tuttle was arrested and booked on suspicion of manufacturing a controlled substance, officials said. He and three other residents of the home on the 5700 block of Corbett Circle were not injured.

Firefighters responded to 12th Drive in the Golden area at approximately 11:30 p.m. Friday, said Mark Techmeyer, a spokesman for the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office.

The man, badly burned over most of his body, told first responders he had tripped and fallen into a backyard fire pit.

As firefighters began to investigate the property, the man changed his story and said he had an accident during the production hash oil.

Making hash oil often means using butane to extract the psychoactive chemical THC from marijuana. Hash oil reportedly produces a more intense high but the process is highly volatile. The cooking process itself is not necessarily a crime, but when damage is caused and it endangers others such as neighbors or children, then the police may file charges.

Emergency crews closed a valve in the pipeline and an all clear was given shortly before noon, allowing evacuees to return to their homes.

"We got everybody out pretty quickly. (We) started going door to door immediately," Landry said.

The leak did not result in any injuries or hospitalizations, she said.

Kurt Dehaan of Petawawa, 27, is charged with trafficking substances, arson by negligence and possession of counterfeit money.

RENO – A Gardnerville man was arrested and made his initial appearance in federal court on Thursday for causing an explosion at his apartment while trying to illegally make butane hash oil, announced U.S. Attorney Dayle Elieson of the District of Nevada.

Adam Fitzgerald-Wermes, 22, was arrested on suspicion of one count of endangering human life while manufacturing a controlled substance. United States District Magistrate Judge Valerie P. Cooke scheduled a jury trial to begin on May 8.

According to the indictment, on January 14, Fitzgerald-Wermes allegedly caused an explosion in his kitchen by trying to make butane hash oil containing a high potency of THC (tetrahydrocannabinol). The chemical extraction process is dangerous because it involves the use of butane, a highly flammable and odorless gas, to burn parts of marijuana to draw concentrated THC from the plant into a wax-like substance. THC is a psychoactive chemical in marijuana that produces the "high" feeling users seek.

Roseville firefighters responded at 6:18 p.m. Tuesday to a report of an explosion on an apartment balcony in the 1600 block of Vineyard Road. The explosion damaged the wall enclosing the balcony, and the heat from the explosion activated the building’s fire sprinklers, according to a Police Department Facebook post.

When firefighters arrived, they notified police that there were signs of a honey oil lab, an illegal operation that uses butane gas and other equipment to manufacture concentrated cannabis products, the news release said.

Police responded and arrested 57-year-old Gary Arlen Folkerts and his brother, 56-year-old Larry Gene Folkerts, both of Roseville, on suspicion of manufacturing a controlled substance by means of chemical extraction, keeping a place to sell drugs and conspiracy.

Law enforcement busted, what on-scene officials called, “a sophisticated text book example of a commercial DMT (dimethyltryptamine) and butane honey oil (BHO) lab.”

The lab produced hallucinogens and cannabinoid oils to sell illegally on the internet, according to the Grant County Sheriff’s Office’s press release. There were also thousands of bottles, containers, labels, commercial sealers and packaging and shipping supplies. The residence contained many pounds of finished product, said the GCSO’s press release.

The home contained four commercial-grade extraction vessels that are an explosive hazard and a DMT processing vessel, said the GCSO. There were many gallons of laboratory liquid reagents that present explosive and poison danger from vapors or leakage, and many pressurized gas cylinders that were not safely stored, according to the GCSO’s press release.

Officials were monitoring the atmosphere for hazardous conditions, identifying all hazardous substances associated with the drug manufacturing process. Officials are also determining the scope of the clean-up, and overseeing the removal of all hazardous materials outside.

"This investigation started in Grant County and eventually led us to the Hurst Landing home," said Grant County Sheriff, Tom Jones. "On the outside, it looks like any other home in a nice neighborhood, but hidden inside was a drug lab capable of injuring people in a variety of different ways. I'm grateful for the teamwork between all of the different agencies which helped make this neighborhood safer again."

Brad Peceimer said he was out walking his dog when he spotted nearly 1,300 empty butane canisters, boxed and dumped in the woods on a neighbor's property.

Peceimer said he has dedicated time to help rid the county of butane litter while working as vice chair with the Americans for Safe Access, a group advocating the safe and legal access of cannabis for therapeutic use and research.

Nearly a year ago, Peceimer removed more than 20,000 such canisters from down a hill in a large patch of poison oak along with many smaller clean-ups, he said. The empty butane canisters are suspected to be used for creating butane honey oil, an extract of cannabis.

Two people suffered major burns Friday night in a butane honey oil lab explosion in southeast Bakersfield, according to the Kern County Sheriff's Office.

A third person at the scene was not injured.

At about 10:30 p.m., deputies were dispatched to the 500 block of Price Street after reports of a structure fire and large explosion, a sheriff's news release said. They found a residence partially engulfed in flames and with major structural damage.

Two of the occupants were taken to a local hospital with major burns.

Firefighters and arson investigators determined a butane honey oil lab explosion caused the fire. No arrests have been made in the case, officials said Monday, which is being investigated by the Sheriff’s Office, California Multi-Jurisdictional Methamphetamine Enforcement Team and the Bakersfield Fire Department.

Honey oil, which is commonly referred to as "wax," is a highly concentrated form of THC, the chemical responsible for marijuana's psychological effects.

Granite Street in Cadillac had to be shut down Tuesday evening as crews investigated a fire at a home near Chemical Bank.

The call came in around 8:24pm — that’s when fire crews and police responded to 204 Granite Street after getting a report of a fire in that home.

When they arrived they found a fire in the bathroom area — generating lots of smoke, but relatively little damage otherwise. Emergency responders helped the homeowner and others out of the building and remained on-scene to ventilate the house and investigate.

There were no injuries in the fire. Neighbors did describe hearing what they called a small explosion around the time of the incident.

Now the Cadillac Fire Department says they’ve identified what caused that explosion.

The investigation into the fire’s origin and cause identified a natural gas forced air furnace that appeared to have exploded. The furnace was extensively damaged, as well as the heating ducts throughout the home.

Over the course of the investigation, a natural gas leak was ruled out as the potential cause of the explosion. The gas source was later identified as butane. A mishandled and improperly stored canister of butane was leaking resulting in flammable gas in the furnace. When the home’s furnace turned on, the butane gas was ignited, causing a small explosion in the furnace and heating ducts — leading to the fire.

NILES — Firefighters were battling a blaze at a residence at 1119 Stateline Road, Niles Township on Sept. 20 when they saw something that led to a search warrant for the address.

The investigation led to criminal charges for Luther Dale Borders, 34, of Niles Township, the Berrien County Prosectuor's Office announced Monday. Borders has been charged with operating or maintaining a drug laboratory, manufacturing marijuana, maintaining a drug house and two counts of child abuse.

Police found what they believe were the remnants of a THC-extraction lab including empty butane fuel cans, a hot plate and vacuum pump. Marijuana was found in that vicinity and elsewhere in the home, according to a press release from the Berrien County Prosecutor's Office.

"Marijuana extraction, also called 'dabbing,' is a process by which THC, the active hallucinogenic ingredient in marijuana, is extracted using liquid butane. This process is extremely dangerous and has resulted in numerous explosions and fires nationally," the release said.

Steven Brown, 24, faces more than 10 charges, including first-degree arson, several drug charges and two felony counts of aggravated cruelty to animals. He is being held at the Pasco County Jail with bail set at $795,100.

In what authorities called the first explosion due to cooking butane hash oil in Pasco County, Brown grabbed his drugs and ran out of the burning house at 6210 Westport Drive, leaving behind a 1-year-old baby and two caged dogs, deputies said. The baby was uninjured, deputies said, but the dogs died.

An arrest warrant for Brown was issued Sept. 9, but authorities were unable to locate him, deputies said. That same day, Brown evaded arrest by fleeing from a traffic stop in a white Kia Optima.

Pasco County Sheriff's Office reported that Steven Brown, 24, and "other accomplices" were manufacturing BHO, also called marijuana wax, at his residence at 6912 Alta Vista Street on September 3. Following the explosion, the house caught fire, forcing Brown to save himself and the drugs on the property.

Steven Brown tried to make butane hash oil but started a fire that nearly destroyed his home and killed two dogs. He remains at large. Pasco Sheriff's Office photos

Harold Cope watched his neighbors home burn.

“The whole sky was lit up,” says Cope.

BHO is a potent concentrated form of marijuana that is used for the purpose of "dabbing," according to Complex. Making BHO requires marijuana to be combined with highly flammable butane to extract THC from the plant material. What is left behind is a substance that resembles ear wax.

Thousands of butane cannisters were the first clues to what sparked a fire that damaged a west Santa Rosa warehouse, fire officials said Wednesday.

Police and fire investigators suspect people were extracting oil from marijuana in a laboratory behind false walls built in the Condo Court warehouse off Coffey Lane, officials said.

Assistant Fire Marshal Paul Lowenthal said he suspects the Tuesday afternoon fire started with a hash oil setup involving butane gas and electric equipment like bucket heaters and hot plates.

Firefighters had to break through walls built behind doors to get inside the warehouse after the 911 call reported smoke coming from the roll-up garage door at 3:15 p.m. Tuesday, Lowenthal said. They forced their way in past heavy smoke and carved a hole in the roof to relieve the heat, Battalion Chief Matt Dahl said.

No one was inside, despite spent fire extinguishers indicating people had tried to put out the flames, Lowenthal said. It wasn’t clear whether they had abandoned hope of extinguishing the fire or if it appeared to be out but then continued smoldering until it reignited. The doors were locked.

The report states that short-circuit was the root cause of the fire. The presence of inflammable adhesives and an LPG cylinder near the stage helped the fire to assume mammoth proportions.

The fire department has slammed the organizers for keeping inflammable substances near the stage.Pratap Rahangdale, Chief Fire Officer of Mumbai Fire Brigade, said that report was prepared by analyzing accounts of several witnesses and circumstantial evidence.

"We have opened the report for the public. We studied circumstantial evidence and witness accounts. I was also one of the witnesses, as I was the first one to use extinguisher there. By studying all that we arrived at the chain of events leading to fire and prepared a final report," he told ANI.

In its 185-page report uploaded on the website of the BMC, the Fire Brigade, has also said that repeated instructions on fire safety were ignored in the run-up to the event.

Four children ages 3 to 13 were in the home but were not injured, Sgt. Ray Framstad said.

Seranto Martinez, 53, and Candelaria Martinez, 33, were flown to a Fresno hospital with second-degree burns on their hands and arms. They are expected to remain hospitalized for at least several days, deputies said.

Fire erupted about 8:06 p.m. inside the garage at 7040 Myrtle Ave. in Winton. Deputies said the man was using butane to extract oil from marijuana when fumes were ignited by a candle flame in the kitchen, causing an explosion that rocked the home and separated the walls from the ceiling.

Investigators, led by Sgt. Aaron Rosenburg, seized about 60 cans of butane and “several pounds” of marijuana buds and ground plants used to extract the oil.

“Initially, it was a burst of fire with a plume of smoke,” she said. “After that, there was a small, spirally smoke and then not much.”
As of about 7:30 p.m. the fire, which was called in by an employee of the railroad company, was out.

The incident occurred in a downstairs apartment in building 814; reportedly, neighbors heard an explosion and when they stepped out of their apartment to investigate, they saw three people leaving.
The three that left have been identified by neighbors as Amy Persons, 29, of Allen, Jake Estil, 19, of Litchfield, and Jason Devaughn, 19, of Litchfield; all three reportedly left to seek medical treatment for Devaughn and Estil, who suffered burns.
The LPD was first scene at the apartment, followed by the LFD. Crews investigated the bathroom area of the apartment and feared that it was meth lab-related, based off of initial observations.
Neighbors were quickly evacuated to a safe distance, and several reported smelling "a strong chemical smell after the explosion."
A Michigan State Police trooper with specialized training in narcotics activities was dispatched to the scene and determined that it was not a meth lab, but rather the occupants were "cooking down marijuana to extract THC oils."

BOISE -- An explosion at a Nampa trailer home earlier this week is raising questions about a form of marijuana called "wax."

Nampa Fire Investigators say two people were making the product when butane gas vapors ignited.

"This is a way to produce marijuana to make it even stronger which produces even a bigger high," said Rob Stevenson, executive director of Drug Free Idaho. Drug experts say marijuana wax is highly potent, and very dangerous to make.

The substance is highly concentrated and has a strong effect when the vapor is inhaled.

"This stuff gets up to 95 percent concentrate THC so it's 95 percent versus that 12 percent that we see on the streets," he added.

The El Medio Fire Department and the Butte County Sheriff's Office responded to a possible butane honey oil (BHO) laboratory explosion and fire Tuesday night around 8 p.m. on the 5300 block of Walmer Road.

Investigators reported that Isaiah Rutherford, 28, was manufacturing BHO in a small bathroom inside the house. At the time, there were four other adults and seven children in the home, ages 2 to 12.

In the explosion, Rutherford was the only one injured. He suffered severe burns and was driven to Oroville Hospital by one of the adults in the house. He was later transferred him to a facility in San Fransisco, and his condition is unknown.

The property manager said she had no idea so many people were living in the house and only knew of four.

WARREN — Investigators believe accumulated flammable vapor likely caused an explosion in a refrigerator and a resulting fire at a single-family home on Harold Sept. 28.

Warren firefighters were dispatched to the scene of an explosion east of Hoover and south of Frazho at about 1:30 p.m., where they found the home left burning after the blast, Fire Chief David Frederick said.

Investigators later determined that the fire was the result of an explosion caused by flammable vapors that had accumulated in a refrigerator.

Sources said one of the residents at the home has a valid medical marijuana card and had been attempting to use isopropyl alcohol to extract the chemical tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC, from marijuana plants. The process apparently involved putting the mixture in a refrigerator, where the man also reportedly had a butane canister stored.

It was unclear exactly what caused the explosion, but Frederick said the the operation of the refrigerator likely sparked flammable gas that exploded inside.

“When the refrigerator kicked on, it ignited the fumes and caused an explosion with a lot of force,” Frederick said.

That oil is different than the kind that's legal in Utah. In 2014, state lawmakers passed a bill making legal cannabidiol, an oil derived from a hemp called Alepsia and used to treat severe, debilitating epileptic conditions. It contains low levels of THC.

On Saturday at 7:30 p.m., there was an explosion on the Gaithersburg, Maryland, campus of the National Institute of Standards and Technology — a federal entity that’s part of the U.S. Department of Commerce.

Investigators tell NBC Washington that they have recovered several chemicals, melted bottles and a recipe used to make meth at the facility.

“We are looking at the possibility that this was some sort of chemical reaction due to the manufacturing of drugs,” Montgomery County Police Capt. Paul Starks said to NBC Washington.

NBC Washington reports a NIST police officer who was hurt in the explosion is believed to have been cooking the chemicals, but the officer told authorities he was injured trying to fill his lighter with butane. The officer, formerly the second-in-command and acting chief of the NIST police, has resigned, NBC Washington reports.

DENVER — A potentially explosive technique used to make a powerful marijuana concentrate from pot leaves and stems has federal investigators cautioning the public about the risks of hash oil extraction.

When done wrong, the process can cause a fireball or flash fire that blows out windows and doors. Authorities say they've seen an uptick in hash oil-related incidents from California to Washington and New Jersey, and say it's in part because people learn the basic technique over the Internet but often lack the sophistication to do it safely.

In 2014, there were 32 butane hash-oil explosions in Colorado alone. Now, there is a move to limit the amount of the chemical someone can purchase. Watch the video to see a hash-oil explosion. VPC

While the technique to make hash oil — also known as wax, shatter, butter or dabs — isn't new, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives experts say the danger can be greater in states that have legalized marijuana because people have access to larger quantities of marijuana plants. ATF agents aren't taking a position on marijuana legalization but are asking lawmakers to consider the ramifications of permitting hash oil extraction.

"I don't think they realize it's unsafe," said Billy Magalassi, chief of the ATF's fire investigation and arson enforcement division. "Kids are curious but they're dealing with things that are very dangerous."

Colorado's constitution permits residents to make marijuana extracts like hash oil, although Gov. John Hickenlooper is considering whether to sign a proposal specifically banning the use of butane for hash extraction.

An Eagle-Vail man said a malfunctioning valve in his legal hash-oil cooking system caused an explosion Wednesday afternoon.

About two hours after the explosion, Ryan Wilhelm, 24, called the Vail Daily from the local hospital to tell his side of the story.

Wilhelm said he was outside on the back porch of his Eagle-Vail townhome when a valve failed on his closed-loop, hash-oil system. They’re designed to keep highly flammable butane gas from escaping.

“The valve popped, and I jumped back,” Wilhelm said. “When I did, the static electricity in my sweatshirt ignited it.”

Wilhelm said he was running a state-approved closed loop system, legal in Colorado.

“It’s legal as long as you’re running a closed-loop system,” Wilhelm said.

IT’S NOT LEGAL, SHERIFF SAYS

The closed-loop system is not legal, the Eagle County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement.

“It does not matter how you’re doing it, it’s illegal,” said Jessie Mosher, public information officer with the Sheriff’s Office. “If you’re in a residential area, you’re endangering everyone around you and yourself.”

No structures were damaged by the subsequent explosion.

A hazmat team stayed at the scene to make sure there were no chemical hazards after the fire.

A Portland Fire & Rescue spokesperson said these sorts of chemical-involved fires are particularly dangerous for firefighters.

Almost a year later, apartments on Lawrence Road in Redding are still not livable after a butane honey oil lab exploded causing flames to destroy multiple apartments.

"The damage that was created within this unit was very significant," said Patrick O'Conner, a fire investigator with the Redding Fire Department.

O'Conner said the fire department is responding to more fires caused by butane honey oil labs than before.

"They are more prevalent specifically in Northern California and in the Northstate we see a lot of marijuana that's legal, where we wouldn't see it on the East Coast or the Midwest so, because it is legal you are going to see a more prevalent use of it," O'Conner said.

The danger is behind closed doors, O'Conner explained. Honey oil is made with butane, a highly explosive chemical that often ignites during the process.

An explosion rattles a City of Shasta Lake apartment complex. Sheriff’s deputies are tying it to illegal drug activity in one apartment.

Explosion sets fire to apartment complex
Shasta County Sheriff’s Deputies said loud blasts were heard around 4:45 Monday evening, coming from the apartment of Michael Miller, 39, and his 15-year-old son. Both men were injured when an alleged butane honey oil lab exploded inside a bedroom in their apartment.

According to Shasta Lake Fire Protection District officials, the father-son duo suffered moderate but non-life threatening injuries in the blast. Fire and drug investigators determined the cause of the fire was related to drug activity. Narcotics task force agents said the two were, “possibly involved in the illegal conversion or extraction of concentrated cannabis using butane.”

A butane honey oil explosion in one of the rooms at the Knights Inn in Palm Springs was the cause of the fire Sunday, Palm Springs authorities said Monday.

At 1:41 p.m. on Sunday, Palm Springs police and fire departments responded to a structure fire at 1450 S. Palm Canyon Dr. and, upon arriving, saw smoke coming from one of the rooms. Police found the four people who had been in the room at the time of the explosion in the nearby parking lot.

Police learned that one of the subjects was attempting to manufacture Butane Honey Oil (BHO) inside of the room when the explosion occurred, Sgt. Harvey Reed said in a news release.

BHO is an extremely potent form of tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC, the chemical responsible for most of marijuana's psychological effects, Reed said in the release.
