SAN PABLO, Calif. - Evacuation orders were lifted Friday in a San Pablo neighborhood days after the discovery of hundreds of dangerous and explosive chemicals found in a backyard shed.

At least 600 chemicals were found in more than 800 bottles and containers behind a home on Stanton Avenue, fire officials said.

"The found explosives, they found acids, they found oxidizers, they found flammable liquids," said Contra Costa County Fire Captain Chris Toler "We could have possibly had a catastrophic event in the middle of the neighborhood."

The stockpile of hazardous materials date back decades with some considered easily combustible, forcing neighbors from their homes for days. Bomb technicians said some of the chemicals were wrapped newspapers featuring stories from when Richard Nixon was president.

Investigators said the property belongs Mark Elson, 80, of San Pablo who died six months ago. They said he was possibly a chemist and science teacher, however, when and where he worked is not clear.

Toler told KTVU that his estranged brother discovered the chemicals early this week while cleaning out the home.

"There was a pretty strange relationship there," he said. "The gentleman hadn’t spoken to his brother in 60 years."

Neighbors said Elson kept to himself and was a hoarder prompting numerous calls to code enforcement for overgrown bushes, trees and trash.

"The front yard and stuff over there was so bad people had to walk out into the street to get around it," neighbor Emerson Harvey said.

San Pablo police confirmed Friday that the home at 925 Stanton Avenue had 18 citations for code violations since 2004.

Repeated explosions have prevented firefighters in Berlin from reaching a blaze in a forest to the south-west of the city that started at a police munitions site used to store second world war bombs.

The fire broke out in the early hours of Thursday morning after unexploded ordinance was accidentally detonated, according to the Berlin police.

The forest, in the well-to-do Grunewald district of the German capital, is popular with city dwellers, from swimmers to dog walkers.

The fire took hold in an area about 1.5 hectares (3.7 acres) in size. Approximately 100 firefighters are at the site, but were unable to get within 1,000 metres to the flames because of a series of explosions triggered by the heat.

The Berlin fire brigade said drought-like conditions had already made the forest susceptible to fire. An unprecedented number of forest fires elsewhere across Germany also means there is a shortage of fire-fighting helicopters to tackle the blaze.

The item was dropped off by a woman Wednesday at Boulder County Hazardous Materials Management Facility, 1901 63rd St. Boulder police initially mistakenly identified the facility as EcoCycle before correcting the information in a tweet Thursday.

Police initially called it a hazardous materials situation, but then called in an army Explosive Ordnance Disposal unit when it was discovered the item appeared to be a military device.

Officials said the item was labeled “inert” but that they could not assume it was safe at the time.

The item was identified as submunition, a small weapon or device that is part of a larger warhead or projectile and separates from it prior to impact. The item was safely examined and removed by the Boulder County Regional Bomb Squad and the U.S. Army.

LONDON, April 5 (Reuters) - Ukraine and Russian-backed separatist forces both reported on Tuesday that an industrial acid tank had been blown up in eastern Ukraine, creating a serious potential hazard for local people, and each pinned the blame on the other.

"In Rubizhne, Luhansk region, Russian troops hit a tank with nitric acid," David Arakhamia, a member of Ukraine's negotiating team at peace talks with Russia, said on Telegram.

Luhansk region governor Serhiy Haidai told residents in a message on Facebook: "Do not leave bomb shelters. If you are indoors - close windows and doors."

Luhansk is part of the Donbas region where Russian-backed separatists have been fighting the Ukrainian army since 2014.

The armed forces of the self-proclaimed, Russian-backed Luhansk People's Republic said on Telegram it was "Ukrainian nationalist formations" who had blown up the acid tank before retreating from the town. They said it had sent up a dangerous cloud of poison gas.

It was not immediately possible to independently verify the incident or to establish who was responsible.

The 14th, 15th and 16th floors of the Majestic Towers Condo at 9601 Collins Avenue were evacuated, residents said, noting that they had received calls telling them to leave their homes.
Bal Harbour police confirmed that a tenant on the 15th floor was evicted last week. On Monday, the property manager went into the unit and called police after seeing something suspicious.
Bal Harbour police say they saw chemicals in a suspected lab of some sort and called Miami-Dade Fire Rescue. Miami-Dade police’s bomb squad and narcotics detectives are assisting in the investigation.
Miami-Dade police referred to it as a “narcotics scene” in a news release.

A Tarrant County man who set off explosions, including one under a bridge in Bedford, and posted video of the destruction online will spend almost four years in federal prison, authorities said.

Nicholas Lloyd Nelson, 38, created his YouTube channel last year to show off his explosive interest. Authorities say he busied himself making chemical explosives in his apartment and using them to blow up trees and blast deep craters in the ground in his suburban neighborhood.

Nelson, a convicted felon living in Bedford, pleaded guilty in June to possession of a destructive device. He was sentenced earlier this month in Fort Worth by U.S. District Judge Reed O’Connor to 46 months in prison.

Authorities said he described his bomb-making techniques on his YouTube channel, Improvised Chaos. In his exchanges with other explosives enthusiasts in the comments section, Nelson said he ordered chemicals and other ingredients through the mail.

Because of his criminal record, Nelson was ineligible for a federal explosives license. He said on his channel that he was self-taught in organic chemistry and enjoyed “blowing crap up” as a hobby. No one was targeted or hurt in the blasts.

With a reported 80 pounds of chemical substances, party hosts recognized a growing family, while unassuming people in the orbit of the blast have since given interviews to multiple news outlets.

Residents in Kingston, New Hampshire and nearby areas felt the effects of a massive blast on Tuesday, which multiple reports attributed to a gender reveal party. The explosion reportedly shook houses and buildings up to 20 miles away in parts of southeastern New Hampshire and neighboring Massachusetts. Some residents told local outlets it sounded like a bomb.

The explosion came from a quarry located in Kingston. Police told the New Hampshire Union Leader that a man detonated 80 pounds of Tannerite — an explosive that’s available for purchase over-the-counter. The man added in blue chalk for the big reveal.

One of the sources with knowledge of emergency response said two pipe bombs were found in the unit at 240 E. Illinois St. on Wednesday, more than 12 hours after Theodore Hilk was found dead there.
On Wednesday night, police spokesman Tom Ahern would only acknowledge that “hazardous materials” were found.
The sources said police initially found Hilk dead in his 7th-floor apartment late Tuesday or early Wednesday after one of his parents requested a well-being check on him. When police arrived initially, lab equipment and some chemical substance or substances were discovered, one of the sources said.
Police eventually left the apartment only to return, however, about 4 p.m., to check on it again, and eventually found the explosive material, sources said.
“They went back and realized they had observed a hazmat, and that’s when they called the FBI,” police spokeswoman Michelle Tannehill said.

UMATILLA COUNTY — The Umatilla County Board of Commissioners approved a resolution during their Wednesday, Feb. 3, meeting expressing the county's willingness to take on responsibility for a historical site at the former Umatilla Chemical Depot.

In 1944, when the depot was still in operation, an accidental explosion ignited inside one of the concrete "igloos" where bombs were stored, killing six workers. The Army is in the process of turning the former depot over to local control, and when the transfer is complete, the county has agreed to take over preservation and maintenance responsibilities for the site of the explosion.

County counsel Doug Olsen told commissioners the resolution before them was not the official agreement that will spell out the details of the county's responsibilities, but the Columbia Development Authority (a partnership between five local government entities) had requested the county voice its willingness now, as negotiations continue for transfer of the depot.

Greg Smith, director of the Columbia Development Authority, told commissioners the plan is to provide public access to the historical site, most likely through an easement on a future road through the depot.

As the authorities continue to suspect ammonia gas leak as the probable cause of the blast in an ice factory in New Karachi Industrial Area on Tuesday, the factory's owner has claimed that the explosion was a result of a bomb attack.
In a video statement issued on Friday, the factory owner, Moin Qadri, who had been staying in Britain for the past four months, said the explosion was a consequence of a "malicious act".
"It was a bomb blast," he insisted, suggesting that either someone threw the explosive device in the factory or it was planted on a car parked outside the factory.
Refuting earlier theories of the blast having occurred following a boiler exploding inside the factory, Qadri maintained that there were no boilers at the unit.

Patrick Air Force Base sent an Explosive Ordnance Disposal unit from Brevard County to Ocean Ridge Circle, off State Road A1A, after the object was found around 5:30 p.m. Monday, according to an Indian River County Fire Rescue official.

Battalion Chief Kyle Kofke said it was about the size of an "oversized" 2-liter bottle, and appeared to be from the WWII-era, like the multiple pieces of practice ordnance that are uncovered along shoreline between Indian River and Martin counties each year.

Kofke said the ordnance was larger than most of the rusty, flattened, spherical practice landmines typically found along the coast.

The Office of the State Fire Marshal, who issued the news release on the matter, said a Monterey man — who authorities haven’t yet identified — will be summonsed to court to face multiple charges on the illegal possession, manufacture and sale of explosive devices.

Police officers served a warrant Friday on West Road in Monterey, a town of around 1,000 near Great Barrington near the borders of New York and Connecticut, “focusing on illegal manufacturing and sale of homemade M Class explosive devices.”

The State Police Bomb Squad and fire investigators “secured dozens of completed destructive devices and explosive components.” Authorities said they were taken to a “secure location” and neutralized.

Authorities said they were led to the home by a tip from a member of the public.

Australian Trent Lee and Briton Stephen “Luke” Atkinson died when an unexploded ordnance is believed to have detonated shortly after 7.30pm on Sunday.

The blast, inside the men’s rented accommodation in Tasahe, in the west of the city, was felt more than five kilometres away: cries for help from inside brought rescuers and emergency services to the building.

Several other unexploded bombs were found inside the apartment according to police inspector Clifford Tunuki. He said police did not know bombs were being brought back to a residential area and were “concerned that they decided to conduct explosive ordnance disposal operations within a residential area”.

The residence is a crime scene, he said.

The two men were employees of the NGO Norwegian People’s Aid (NPA), which maps unexploded ordnance across Solomon Islands, working alongside the police bomb disposal unit.

I did not realize that it was going to result in the scattered debris that it did.”

Collins came to the meeting to outline what happened in response to School Committee Chairman George Schmidt’s appearance before the Board of Selectmen on Monday, expressing his displeasure about the miscommunication.

“For an event to happen, and wait 24 hours before the school superintendent was notified, is unacceptable,” Schmidt said. “I don’t understand what went wrong. I don’t expect it to happen again.”

Collins spoke about the safety and security considerations behind the controlled detonation.

“I will attempt to put this into a clear perspective for you, but shall not compromise an ongoing investigation that may lead to criminal charges,” he said.

On Aug. 28, the Mashpee Police and Fire departments responded to a residence after a report of a person with facial burns, Collins said. They found materials that required calling investigators from the state fire marshal’s office.

Members of the Explosive Ordnance Division also responded, and personnel seized, stabilized and secured items that Collins said were considered to be improvised explosive devices or homemade fireworks.

“I give full credit to these true professionals who walk into the face of potential danger and take their responsibilities seriously, and then make decisions and take actions to ensure public safety is preserved,” Collins said.

Collins said the explosive devices required safe removal as well as detonation.

Two deadly collisions involving U.S. Navy destroyers in June and August 2017 may have cost the lives of up to sixteen sailors, leading the Navy to declare a day-long operational pause to reflect upon its safety culture. That such similar accidents took place in such close proximity reflects stresses and failings common to the maritime fighting branch.

In the 1960s, the Navy also suffered a series of deadly accidents aboard its carriers. In their wake came major reforms addressing the inherent dangers of operating ships packed full of explosive munitions, fuel and jet planes. This three-part series will examine why each of the accidents occurred, how the crew responded and the lessons that were drawn from the tragedies.

Bomb technicians found three functional pipe bombs at 108 Indian Acres Drive, according to Sgt. Jeffrey D. Dade, the squad’s commander. “They were fully functional pipe bombs that were rendered safe.”

Two other suspected pipe bombs were rendered inert, he said.

Technicians also found about 30 pounds of explosive powder, a similar weight of degrading consumer-grade fireworks, multiple smoke grenades, multiple grenade hulls that were deemed inert and tear-gas devices, the Hinsdale Police Department said in a Facebook post Thursday evening.

The materials were all safely removed, and State Police were working to dispose of them.

According to the U.S. Dept. of Justice, 24-year-old Ryan Keith Taylor was sentenced to 135 months in prison Monday for producing, possessing, and using a chemical weapon in violation of federal law.

Taylor was also sentenced to five years of supervision upon release.

We're told Taylor set off an explosive device containing chlorine gas on the morning of April 12, 2017 in the Kisatchie National Forest near Fort Polk.

Three U.S. Army soldiers who were conducting a training exercise nearby heard the explosions and found Taylor standing near his vehicle filming the explosion with his cell phone.

They then questioned Taylor and reported the incident to military police.

Upon arrival, Fort Polk military police investigators examined the scene and began collecting samples at the blast site.

One investigator filled a plastic bag with a rock coated in an unknown substance.

The bag immediately popped, and the investigator’s plastic gloves and boots began to melt. He also began to experience difficulty breathing and his skin started burning.

The closure of a highway and forced evacuation of residents have shaken up the small ranching and farming town of Norris, pop. 109. The town sits about 40 minutes southeast of Bozeman.

On July 17th, residents in Norris were alerted to the efforts of a federal hazardous substance cleanup in town when a mandatory evacuation was ordered and Highway 287 – which winds through the small community – was closed.

Many of the residents likely wouldn’t have paid much attention to the cleanup at all, had it not been for a group of chemicals that were so dangerous, they had to be blown-up onsite by a bomb squad.

The environmental officials' original plan for the Norris Lab was to move all of the chemicals to a secure site in an isolated field where they would be detonated safely. However, some of the chemicals were so volatile that the risk of transporting them was too great, and experts decided to do a controlled detonation at the site of the lab.

Says On-Scene Coordinator for the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Craig Myer, the chemicals are “so sensitive that even opening the container, the friction from the cap moving, can be enough to initiate an explosion.”

Tomas Mikula, 28, was arrested after an explosion at 88 Webster Street caused "major internal and structural damage. Mikula lives on the second floor of that building.

Mikula was hospitalized with non-life threatening injuries. Before being hospitalized, police said he told them the explosion started in his apartment, where police allegedly later found firearms and ammunition.

A bomb squad sweep of his apartment found materials that are usually connected to explosive devices. A search warrant sweep ended in the seizure of PVC tubing and chemical compounds, materials commonly used for homemade explosives.

Police said they also found two handguns, a rifle, and over 100 rounds of ammunition.

Mikula is charged with unlawful possession of explosives, unlawful possession of an incendiary device, willful ignition/discharge of a destructive or incendiary device, two counts unlawful possession of a firearm, unlawful possession of ammunition, and unlawful possession of a high capacity firearm.

The acid bombs were homemade and are no bigger than a water bottle, but they can still cause a lot of damage, according to authorities.

Investigators with the Orange County Sheriff's Office were called out before 9:30 a.m. after neighbors reported hearing several loud explosions coming from inside a home at 4445 Beach Blvd.

The fire broke out around 4 pm and it was still on till the filing of the report.
Around eight fire brigade vehicles, including five from the Panchkula fire station, had been sent to the TBRL to douse the flames.
However, no loss of life was reported in the incident.
The Panchkula fire station claimed that they had received a call at 7:10 pm. The TBRL too has its own three fire tenders.
The fire is at distance from the residential area of the TBRL.
“There is no need to panic. Around 4 pm, we had tested a high-calibre warhead. It is of 200 kg. Its splinters spread to a large area. There were dry grass which caught fire. Within 15 minutes, the fire would be completely extinguished,” said TBRL Director Dr Manjit Singh.
He said: “The TBRL is fully capable to extinguish the fire. We have our own fire tenders. The civil administration did send five fire tenders but they were not used.”
The TBRL is a Defence Research Development Organisation (DRDO) laboratory near Billa village in Panchkula. It is a testing facility and a high-risk area. Adjacent to the TBRL, there is an ITBP camp also.

(AP) — Bomb technicians from the FBI conducting a final sweep of the apartment building where a fatal explosion occurred last week were able to retrieve some important items for tenants who were not allowed to collect personal belongings.
The technicians were sweeping the building for ammunitions and hazardous materials prior to Thursday's controlled burn of the building. Because of the volatility of the chemicals inside the building, residents had to leave behind family heirlooms, important papers, jewelry and other belongings.
The city said Thursday the bomb technicians were able to grab some important property on behalf of the tenants.
Authorities set a controlled fire Thursday to burn the chemicals that could not be removed because of their volatility. The explosion March 5 killed one tenant, 28-year-old Benjamin Morrow, who police believe was making bombs.

As of 11:30am March 13, the street that spans less than a block and ends in a cul-de-sac was closed with crime scene tape while police served a search warrant. Morgan Hill Police called in the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Bomb Squad to conduct the search. CalFire’s hazardous materials team was also at the scene.
The search was prompted by two explosions that occurred less than four hours apart in the area of the McLaughlin Court home March 12, according to Morgan Hill Police Sgt. Troy Hoefling.
About 2:45pm March 12, a nearby resident called police to report “a firework or explosion,” Hoefling said. Officers responded but did not find a source of the disturbance at that time.
Then about 6pm March 12, another resident called to report a “louder explosion” than the previous one, Hoefling said. That caller offered more details, including the sighting of a puff of smoke from a specific residence following the explosion.

HARBOR, Ore. - A high school chemistry teacher helped firefighters figure out how to neutralize a mysterious substance that emitted a purple haze and sounded like a gun shot when touched, the Curry County Sheriff's Office said.
Initial calls to 911 Tuesday indicated "unknown subjects had thrown what appeared to be multiple smoke bombs onto floors and that the substance was continually cracking and popping" at Wild River Pizza in Harbor, the sheriff's office said.
Law enforcement determined someone had spread a chemical on the floor.
The unknown stuff "continued to activate by touch or stepping on it. The substance emitted a purple haze each time it activated and it sounded like a .22 caliber gun shot going off," Sheriff John Ward said.
Firefighters secured the area, and the building was evacuated.
A chemistry teacher from Brookings Harbor High School "determined that the chemical substance could be neutralized by baking soda," the sheriff said. "The Harbor Fire Department cleaned the area and made it safe for re-entry."
Investigators reviewed security video and determined at least 3 suspects were involved.
Brookings Police identified one of the suspects Wednesday as James Snyder, 40, of Harbor.
Deputies contacted Snyder at his home just before noon and placed him under arrest. Detectives obtained a searched warrant for the home and located "what appeared to be chemicals and bomb related items," Ward said. "The Oregon State Police Bomb Squad was contacted and at their request, the residence was vacated until they could arrive."

Preliminary tests carried out by the experts from the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons confirmed suspicions that the barrel bombs discovered in three provinces could indeed turn out to be chemical weapons.

This initial confirmation was made yesterday after the OPCW ended an operation to inspect the bombs sites in Mondulkiri, Tbong Khmum and Svay Rieng provinces.

It was learned that the experts, in their preliminary findings, have confirmed that the barrel bombs could be chemical weapons.

However, an official from Cambodian Mine Action Centre (CMAC) said that since these were preliminary findings, they could not confirm the exact chemical substance within the barrel bombs.

“We will bring this issue to discuss with those that dropped the bombs,” the official said, familiar with the investigations said, referring to the United States, which dropped the bombs on Cambodia during the Vietnam War.

The blast blew out four large windows of a second-floor, corner apartment at the building in Brownsville. Firefighters rushed to the scene on Hegeman Avenue shortly after 1 p.m.
Tyrone McClean said he felt the building shake and heard a loud bang. Some residents said they felt a rumbled from more than a dozen stories above the blast.
Andre Chandler said he noticed a "subtle shake" for about 10 seconds. "And I'm on the 16th floor and on the opposite side (of the building)," he said.

The New Hampshire State Police Bomb Squad was called to Jaffrey on Monday afternoon to detonate a “soda bottle bomb” found on Community Field.

The bomb — also known as a chemical reaction bomb — was safely detonated with the use of a bomb squad tool, according to Bomb Squad Sergeant Jeff Dade, in an interview on scene Monday.

“These bombs are extremely unpredictable,” said Dade, who said the bombs are typically constructed by juveniles seeking thrills. “The motivation is typically not to hurt anyone, but oftentimes there are unintended consequences.”

Bombs of this nature are made by placing aluminum foil and a mixture of chemicals into a soda bottle or other type of plastic bottle with a lid, according to Dade. The plastic bottle eventually explodes due to a pressure build up caused by a chemical reaction between the chemicals and aluminum foil in the bottle.

The police reported the explosion happened at around 3:30 p.m. Monday at Purok 11, Barangay Poblacion, Dimataling, Zamboanga del Sur.

Identified fatality was John Javier Bonga. Wounded was Raymund Maghinay, also three years old.

PO1 Iresidel Osayan, the case investigator, said investigation showed that the two children were seen tinkering with a metallic object while playing beneath the house of their aunt, Genalyn Vallecer.

Osayan said Vallecer suddenly heard a loud explosion when one of the children hit the metallic object with a stone, killing Bonga instantly.

He said that Maghinay was rushed to the Margosatubig Regional Hospital for treatment.

Vallecer was making a bamboo stick about 10 meters away from the children at the time of the explosion.

“The said explosive device was allegedly discovered by the children somewhere near the house and played with it,” the Dimataling police reported on Tuesday.

Osayan said they recovered at the explosion site three pieces of deformed aluminum metallic sheet.

The chemical bombs contain 2-chlorobenzalmalononitrile (CS), a type of tear gas, and were dropped by the United States military before the Khmer Rouge takeover. Last week, Prime Minister Hun Sen called the bombs “weapons of mass destruction”, and accused the US of not shouldering enough of the burden in clearing ordnance.

“These chemical bombs are very harmful to the comfort of the people because once the chemical leaks out, it will cause diseases – itchiness, respiratory problems and cancer,” said CMAC President Heng Ratana, though CS is not listed as a carcinogen by the International Agency for Research on Cancer.

Ratana said the excavation and removal of the bombs will take 10 days, and 162 families in Romeas Hek district will need to temporarily relocate.

“Our experts will do their best to deal with both chemical bombs as soon as possible in order to impound them at the safe place temporarily and wait for the discussion with partners including the US,” Ratana said.

The ingredients were being recommended together under the “frequently bought together” and “customers who bought this item also bought” sections, Britain’s Channel 4 News revealed.

The items are innocent on their own but can be put together to create potentially deadly chemical explosives.

On Tuesday, The New Daily was able to find the ingredients for black powder and thermite on Amazon, and confirmed chemicals were recommended for purchase together.

The New Daily chose not to name or picture the labels for the items.

Other materials that could be used in bomb making, including ball bearings, ignition systems and remote detonators, were freely available on the site, and some of them were suggested to be bought with the chemicals.

A HOMEMADE bomb, believed to be made of chemicals in a Red Bull can, exploded on the city’s busiest street as a group of men walked close by.

A police investigation is under way into who placed the explosive in front of City Lane in Flinders St on August 3, with officers scouring security camera footage.

Video from the dashcam of a passing motorist shows the explosion, about 9.20pm, throwing a cloud of mist into the air (pictured), with witnesses telling police it was “extremely loud”.

Senior police have described the incident as serious and believe the explosion could have seriously injured nearby diners or pedestrians.

“That explosion has caused a lot of noise, there’s potential for the shards of metal to have gone through the air,” Townsville Police Station officer-in-charge acting Senior Sergeant Damien Ahearn said.

“Anyone in the general vicinity of that can at the wrong time would have been seriously hurt as a result of what’s occurred.”

EVANSTON — Several improvised chemical pressure bombs were found in and around an abandoned vehicle near Evanston on Friday, June 9, requiring assistance from the Sweetwater County Bomb Squad in order for the scene to be declared safe.

According to the Uinta County Sheriff’s Office, the vehicle was reported after a man noticed it near a stock pond on his land about a mile north of County Road 108 (the landfill road), a week earlier.

Deputies investigated the scene and found one bomb in the vehicle and three others in the area, all of which were detonated by the bomb squad. One bomb had exploded and damaged the car, which the Sheriff’s Office said appeared to be of little value.

Sheriff Doug Matthews said they don’t have a lot of information, but his office is conducting an investigation. He said they think it was probably some kids just messing around.

The Sheriff’s Office warned about such improvised bombs, however.

“Improvised chemical bombs are commonly made using flimsy containers like plastic soda bottles,” states a post from the Uinta County Law Enforcement Services Facebook page. “A liquid such as toilet or drain cleaner is poured into the bottle and other substances are introduced to cause a chemical reaction.”

Just over the defendant’s head, jurors could see the Plaza Towers where it’s alleged 23-year-old Chase Lee Coble was making a bomb or explosive device.

Before calling her first and only witness, public defender Lois Lynn told jurors Wednesday in an opening statement that the defendant is a “smart guy ... who may very well do good things for society.”

Coble then went to the stand and answered for his experimental use of over a dozen chemicals and roughly 15 computers found in his Plaza Towers apartment at 17 E. Second Ave. following a fire June 21, 2016.

The fire was a scientific experiment gone wrong in Coble’s 12th floor apartment. During cross-examination, Reno County Attorney Keith Schroeder asked if Coble threw a PVC pipe, computer and beaker out the window when first-responders arrived as a way to cover up any wrongdoing.

Coble said he discharged the items following an eviction notice. It had nothing to do with any cover-up, he said.

Closing arguments are the only thing standing in the way of jury deliberations, which are scheduled to begin this morning. Coble faces three counts of aggravated arson, each carrying a minimum sentence of roughly 4.5 years.

The trial started Tuesday with Coble originally facing five charges. Since then, the state dropped a charge and Judge Trish Rose dismissed another.

Rose dismissed a charge of criminal use of explosives following testimonies that revealed all the components for making black powder and another volatile compound known as TATP were not in the apartment.

Sulfur and charcoal — two of the three components needed for black powder — were found in the apartment. The missing component was saltpeter, which Coble testified he thought was a chemical in a bag of tree stump remover found in the apartment.

That was too much to handle even for trash collectors specializing in environmentally dangerous materials. Police say employees at the site turned away the man, who then went to a police station and plonked the grenade on a desk.

A police statement Tuesday said officers there gingerly took it outside where it was taken away by de-mining specialists.

Jon Sterkel, 26, and his wife, Ashley, recorded a video of exploding targets on their property that released a cloud of blue chalk. As the targets exploded, Sterkel shouts, “It’s a boy!”
The explosion, though, led to multiple calls to the local sheriff’s office. Residents thought a house exploded or a car engine blew out. Sterkel got a ticket for setting off an explosive device without a state permit, which is a misdemeanor punishable by up to a year in jail and fine of up to $1,000.
Sterkel told the Omaha World-Herald that he hopes others can learn from his mistake.
“People need to follow the proper protocol,” he told the newspaper. “We never knew, and we’ve shot these for years. If you can go to a store and buy it, how in the world can you know it’s illegal?”
The sheriff noted that Sterkel was cooperative, and no one was hurt and no property was damaged.
The baby boy is due June 16. Sterkel says they’ll do something more “low-key” when he’s born

Iraq’s elite Counter-Terrorism Service (CTS) has retaken the university from IS, officers said, but the danger posed by the jihadists here is far from over.

There are “booby-trapped buildings in addition to chemical materials inside the university,” Captain Saif Ali told AFP on the eastern side of the campus.

The Humboldt County District Attorney’s office has decided not to pursue criminal charges against two 15-year-olds accused of plotting the bombing of a Fortuna High School assembly.

“To date, the investigation has yielded no evidence that either juvenile had the means to create an item that could be a hazard — one individual possessed approximately 2 grams ([less than] .1 ounces) of sulfur, a readily available legal product with a variety of uses,” a press release from the office states. “Further, there is insufficient evidence to indicate the two juveniles conspired to commit an attack.”

Both findings are in direct conflict with statements from Fortuna Police Chief Bill Dobberstein on Nov. 11, the day after police thwarted the alleged plot. The chief told the Journal and other media outlets that one of the juveniles was found to be in possession of “several components for making some kind of toxic chemical gas explosion devices” but were missing a “key ingredient” that police believed was stashed somewhere on campus. Dobberstein said it appeared the students were planning on making multiple explosive devices with a substance akin to homemade mustard gas, or sulfur mustard, to detonate them at an all-school assembly that day.

Further, Dobberstein said it appeared the students had been planning a “mass casualty event” for some time and targeting “when there was going to be a large gathering of students and teachers in one place.”

CASTLE ROCK, Colo. -- Castle Rock Police briefed the media on the latest related to a neighborhood evacuation after deadly chemicals and explosive devices were found in a home there Monday morning.

The 30 or so families ordered to evacuate were allowed to return to the Plum Creek neighborhood Tuesday evening. The home where the chemicals and explosives were found has been condemned.

Authorities say chemicals found inside the home could have caused a deadly explosion if officers had not stumbled upon them. Hazmat crews found more than 20 containers of chemicals inside the house and on the back porch. Investigators had yet to identify the chemicals.

A Douglas County bomb squad detonated two explosive devices behind the home located in the 400 block of West Prestwick Way in Castle Rock.

Castle Rock police say the department arrested two teens Sunday night after neighbors reported they were acting suspiciously, and when officers told the parents of one of the children at their home Monday morning, the officers found a small box of chemicals, prompting the call to hazmat crews with Douglas County.

Initial reports about a device used in Saturday’s bombing in New York City suggested the explosive could have been a commercially available material called Tannerite. Stories from the Associated Press and New York Times reported the claim, citing anonymous officials involved in the investigation of the attack that injured 29.
But, on the basis of the material’s properties, explosives experts and the makers of Tannerite doubt it alone could have caused the explosion. A subsequent report from the New York Times seemed to confirm these doubts, indicating that officials had detected the explosive hexamethylene triperoxide diamine (HMTD) in devices related to the attack.
The suspected bomber, Ahmad Khan Rahami, was arrested after a shootout in New Jersey on Monday. He allegedly set off bombs in New Jersey and in New York on Saturday. According to news reports, anonymous officials identified Tannerite at the New York bomb site, and a second report linked HMTD to both bombings.
Tannerite, made and sold by Tannerite Sports, is used to produce exploding targets for long-range shooting practice. The targets explode when hit by a bullet, allowing shooters to hear and see that they’ve successfully made the shot. Occasionally, “tannerite” is used to describe similar products.
An exploding Tannerite target consists of an 8:1 ratio of oxidizer to catalyst, which come in separate containers and are mixed and shaken together prior to use. The Tannerite patent says that, in the optimal composition, the oxidizer contains 85% ammonium nitrate powder by weight, and 15% ammonium perchlorate. The catalyst is 90% explosive grade aluminum powder, 5% titanium sponge, and 5% zirconium hydride.

Prosecutor's spokeswoman Ine Van Wymersch said a car broke through fences at about 02:00 (00:00 GMT).
The car was then rammed into a building where forensic tests are conducted, before a fire was started. Police could not confirm if a bomb had exploded.
Ms Van Wymersch said the likely aim was to destroy "several files" inside.
The building is not yet safe to enter, Ms Van Wymersch said, so it was not possible to fully dismiss reports a bomb had exploded.
The five people were arrested near the laboratories soon after the fire was reported, Ms Van Wymersch told a press conference.

Two suspects are in custody and being questioned by fire marshal authorities after police found possible explosive materials at an apartment complex in Pasadena early Friday morning.
“Basically we have determined that there was some material we had concern with that a patrol officer found on a call this morning that might have referenced the construction of an explosive device,” said Pasadena Fire Marshal David Brannon.
During the ensuing investigation, officials found materials in the apartment that could be utilized to manufacture some type of a explosive device, however, said Brannon, it was determined that it was more of a case where subjects were possibly manufacturing drug paraphernalia.
Two arrests were made on subjects being in possession of materials of concern as far as the manufacture of a prohibited weapon or the manufacture of some type of narcotic, according to Brannon.
“They were not ‘cooking’,” Brannon added. “We found all of the materials which would suggest that they were building some type of explosive device or ‘cooking’ some type of drug, but we did not catch them cooking any type of drugs.”

HCSO: Babysitter arrested for building acid bombs with teen

TAMPA (FOX 13) - A babysitter is accused of having explosives and child abuse after the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office said he set off an acid bomb in a park Monday.

HCSO said deputies arrested 30-year-old Joshua Stephen Lapin-Bertone, of Tampa, and charged him with four counts each of making/placing/discharging a destructive device and child abuse - endangerment.

Investigators said an off-duty deputy working in the Logan Gate Subdivision near Monterey Lakeside Park heard an explosion and went straight to the park around 11:15 a.m. That's when he saw Lapin-Bertone setting off chemical bombs.

HCSO said Lapin-Bertone was showing a boy how to set off chemical bombs and had the child participated in throwing the devices. After searching his vehicle, deputies found more chemicals used to make acid bombs.

A bomb team member from HCSO came to the scene and neutralized the chemicals.

The child's mother responded came to the park and took her son. The initial investigation revealed the babysitter was found by the mother through Care.com and has been a regular babysitter for the boy for the past four years.
