SEVIERVILLE, Tenn. — On Thursday, crews responded to calls about an explosion at a chemical plant in Sevierville. No injuries were reported due to the explosion, they said.
The plant is located on Airport Road and is owned by Johnson Matthey Catalyst. The company manufactures chemicals used in several products and solutions. They have 43 manufacturing sites across the world and they primarily make catalysis products, meant to quicken chemical reactions.
According to Bob Stahlke, the spokesperson for Sevierville Police Department, firefighters arrived to find smoke coming from the building but were able to take control of the situation quickly.
They advised people in a 1,000-foot radius to voluntarily evacuate to a temporary shelter by going door-to-door but said no one decided to heed the evacuation. The evacuation notice was later rescinded.
Stahlke said the company believes nickel aluminum powder in the building likely exploded, saying the fire was quickly contained by a fire suppression system. Firefighters put out the remaining hot spots.

Melaka JBPM Hazardous Materials Unit (Hazmat) operations commander, Fire Superintendent Zulkhairani Ramli said they received a report on the incident at about 2.56 am.

“A total of 14 members from the Alor Gajah and Ayer Keroh Fire and Rescue Stations including the Hazmat team were sent to the location and found a trailer carrying a load of solid scheduled waste, namely copper and aluminium powder, skidded onto the roadside.

“The 29-year-old driver and his 31-year-old attendant escaped unhurt,” he said in a statement here today.

Elaborating, Zulkhairani said the HAZMAT team had taken a reading of pollution levels at the location using special equipment including infrared thermal cameras and chemical detectors and found that the situation was safe.

A HAZMAT situation was declared at a metal manufacturing facility in Burlington Friday after a quick thinking chemist noticed a tumbler containing aluminum powder was rising to concerning temperatures and had the building evacuated, the fire department said.

Firefighters responded to Desktop Metal, 63 Third Ave. at about 10:15 a.m. on the report of a possible HAZMAT situation, Burlington fire said in a statement. The firefighters learned of the chemist’s concerns and declared a Tier 1 HAZMAT situation.

They also requested assistance from the state Department of Fire Services HAZMAT team. Those crews are still at the scene and are working to safely remove and dispose of the aluminum powder, the statement said.

The State Police Bomb Squad was also called to the scene as a precaution, the statement said.

The chemist knew that the powder could become an explosion hazard if the temperature rose too high. He pumped Nitrogen into the tumbler containing the powder to stop the temperature from rising higher, the statement said.

The chemist also called 911.

“The chemist did a fantastic job, and I would like to thank him for recognizing the potential danger here, and for quickly taking important steps to mitigate that danger,” Burlington Fire Chief Michael Patterson said in the statement. “The diligence of the employees at Desktop Metal helped to ensure this incident was not more serious.”

Sources said waterlogged, narrow roads made it difficult for the fire tenders to reach 11, Transport Depot Road where the fire was reported at 9.50am on Wednesday . Further, several blasts were reported form the spot due to the presence of chemicals. The firefighters used sand and foam to deal with the raging fire.

Morristown firefighters used a dry chemical to extinguish a ferocious, white-hot fire that was fueled by a large quantity of aluminum dust outside the Kawasaki Tennessee plant Monday afternoon, a firefighter said this morning.

The fire, which burned with the intensity of a sparkler, temporarily halted production at the automotive supplier in the Morristown Airport Industrial District, but work resumed this morning, according to Deputy Chief Clark Taylor.

No firefighter was injured battling the potentially dangerous blaze.

The fire started at a large clogged funnel outside the plant that’s an end point of the ventilation and filtration system. Firefighters used a pike to loosen the super-heated metal dust, which ignited as soon as it was exposed to oxygen, according to Taylor.

“We had to dig (the aluminum dust) out of the bottom,” the deputy fire chief said. “Our crew did a really good job. The (dust) would fall out in globs. They had to poke it and run.”

Taylor says the metal would have easily burned through firefighters’ turnout gear.

Last week, concerned viewers reached out to the station reporting of 'loud booms' and explosions out of the West Lubbock area.

The Lubbock County Sheriff’s Office bomb squad was also contacted. They were able to determine that the series of explosion sounds were a result of residents shooting Tannerite out at their property.

Tannerite is a binary explosive that many shooters use to amplify their recreational target practice. It is composed of ammonium nitrate and aluminum powder. When a bullet hits Tannerite at a high velocity, it causes a chemical reaction that results in a large water vapor cloud along with a loud explosion.

For some the noise is unsettling, for others it’s the sound of a good time.

“Tannerite is just something else for people to enjoy shooting," said Jerry Sanders, a range safety officer and supervisor of the Lubbock Shooting Complex range. He wants to remind others that you cannot shoot Tannerite at a gun range, the best place to do so is on private property. “It makes a big boom. You do need to be a safe distance away from it though, just because of the shock wave of it. If you’re taking precaution, there shouldn’t be any danger or property damage.”

This form of target practice is legal, and safe if done properly. You can purchase Tannerite and nearly any firearm store.

Three employees of Stroh Precision Die Casting in Mauston’s West Industrial Park were taken to Mile Bluff Medical Center after a Friday-morning fire.

Mauston Fire Department Chief Kim Hale said the employees were taken to the hospital as a precaution for inhalation of smoke and chemicals after they attempted to put out the fire.

“Most of it I think was probably from the carbon-dioxide extinguishers they were using to try and put it out,” Hale said. “They wasted seven or eight extinguishers and that stuff is pretty nasty.”

Hale said several of the employees had already returned to work early Friday afternoon. No firefighters were injured, Hale said.

The fire was caused by a build-up of aluminum dust inside machinery. Hale said the fire call came at 10:56 a.m. and firefighters cleared the scene at about 2:15 p.m. The fire created a lot of smoke, but Hale said hazardous materials handbooks indicated the smoke represented no public-health hazard.

Stroh Precision Die Casting was cited in 2011 and 2012 by OSHA, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, for safety violations.

The business, at 6850 N.E. Campus Way, has a system in which aluminum dust from the manufacturing process is stored in a container outside the building, said Storm Smith, a Hillsboro Fire spokesman. The dust is supposed to cool in the container, but somehow became too hot and ignited.

An explosion occurred, Smith said, but the business had safety features in place that prohibited the explosion from going back into the building. Smoke made its way into the structure, he said, but no fire.

Fire crews evacuated employees. No one was injured.

Firefighters, Smith said, are ventilating the building. They used a fire extinguisher that works for metal fires, he said.

Altogether, 40 firefighters and Simi Valley Police officers were on scene and about 70 employees were evacuated from the business.

The call of a structure fire in the 1700 block of Voyager Avenue came in to the Ventura County Fire Department just after 10 a.m. March 5.

The fire was situated in a space occupied by RSA Engineered Products at 1785 Voyager Ave. The large building is in a commercial complex just off Royal Avenue, west of Tapo Canyon Road.

RSA is a company that designs, develops, manufactures, tests and qualifies products for the aerospace and defense industries.

According to Capt. Mike Lindbery, public information officer for the fire department, the fire was caused by burning aluminum dust in the duct work. The machine shop has a dust collection system that is supposed to expel metal dust through the ducting.

Authorities say 23-year-old Jesse Holland of Gardner stole the chemicals, including iron powder, aluminum powder and magnesium metal ribbon, from Waltham High School, where he worked.

He was arrested Wednesday morning in a Leominster store parking lot after police say he acted suspiciously. A search of his car yielded the chemicals, a hatchet and a stun gun.

He was held without bail in court Wednesday on charges including possession of an incendiary device, pending a dangerousness hearing set for March 11.

Police say Holland told them he intended to throw the chemicals into a fire to "see what would happen."

Waltham Mayor Jeannette McCarthy called the allegations "troubling."

Naperville Firefighters arrived to Promet Processing Corporation, 951 Frontenac Rd., around 3 p.m. Wednesday after receiving a call regarding a debris pit catching fire, said Naperville Fire Division Chief Mark Ziemnik.

“When our units first got here they were told that aluminum had caught on fire in a pit (measuring) about 5-by-8 by about 25-to-30 feet deep,” Ziemnik said.

A total of 25 fire personnel were on the scene, including two trucks, two ambulances, three engines, one police squad company and three command vehicles.

Employees were able to extinguish the fire prior to the fire department’s arrival, he said.

“We had gone upstairs to have a meeting and when we were up there a spark landed on some debris,” said Promet Processing Corporation general manager Matt Steagall. “And next thing you know, it was time to roast marshmallows.”

This one was at Eckart Aluminum on Campground Road.

Investigators are still searching for what sparked the fire at about 7 p.m. Monday.

Firefighters said 20 to 30 workers were in the plant when something caused aluminum powder to ignite and explode inside a building.

Two workers were hurt and rushed to University Hospital, but one was released hours later and the other sustained only minor injuries.

Emergency officials assessed the situation quickly and found there was never any threat to the surrounding community.
