Now I am all for variety and options within the market so I don’t want you to think I’m suggesting that cheap tools should be banished, on the contrary I belive they are vital. And at the risk of seriously over simplifying things for making a point, I would like to suggest that we all have two routes to consider when buying tools. Either we want something that functions well for our needs, or we want something that functions well and also goes a step beyond so that it is a joy to own, a pleasure to hold, admire and use.
A mass produced copy can only provide the former at best, and yet it’s price mark will still hold some bearing to it’s copycat looks.
If you’re seeking cheap functional tools then go with a time tested bog standard one or take a look at something second hand. If you want individual design, quality and service then go to a small maker or reputable quality brand.
Strong principles are often a part of buying hand tools, it’s a passionate hobby and quite often we are drawn to tools not only because we need them but because we want them. If we can find a way to create transparency and education for the buyer then we will be taking a step in the right direction.

The tone was light and playful. Ideas like helium balloon houses, and personal jet packs were exciting lunch time topics. Eventually the idea of a floating ball as an escape vessel was hatched.

From that idea, through a series of sketches and several hundred web searches birthed the concept that a tsunami-proof vessel was a possibility.

With no boat building experience and almost no time spent on the water, this was more of a fantasy than a practical planning exercise.

He turned the bowl on his ovalturning lathe ODM30. The photo is the last one of a series that shows the step by step ovalturning of this bowl. Mike Darlow included this series into his book “Woodturning Methods” in a detailed chapter on ovalturning (The Melaleuca Press Exeter, NSW, Australia 1999). He called the chapter Elliptical Turning. Before him David Springett reminded in his book “Adventures in Woodturning” (GMC Publication, Lewes/England 1994) as the first of the today´s English writing authors of the ancient art of ovalturning. He built an ovalturning device (oval chuck) from wood and turned on it beautiful oval pieces - a marvellous introduction

Ovalturning is an old challenging woodturning art. It was applied until the middle of the 20th century in frame manufactories. There were many such factories in European countries but nothing remained. In the USA the Old Schwamb Mill - a frame factory founded in 1864 by German immigrants - has been well preserved. It is a working museum with the19th century machines in action.

A few months ago I was in Lowes, a US big box store, and I saw a plug cutter with a difference made by Hitachi. they are available individually or in a pack of three; 5/16″, 3/8″ and 7/16″ I think. I wanted a plug cutter I could use in an electric drill or better still a battery-driven screwgun/drilldriver and as soon as I saw this I knew it would work. Regular plug cutters without a centrepoint spin off course straight away and leave the surface badly scored and rough. They are virtually impossible to hold on centre in other words and they just will not work without a drill press. In this case, set it up in a Dewalt screwgun, and, cutting spiral-grained mahogany, the bit centred immediately and without effort to cut a perfect plug. Furthermore, the developed plug is tapered slightly and so any variance in drill bit sizes will generally be accommodated.

I wanted to help people establish a simple method of sharpening that works very effectively, efficiently and yet does not compromise cut quality. It follows the pattern we use for ripcut sharpening but has a progressive tooth pattern that goes from passive or neutral to a more aggressive presentation of the tooth to the wood. The end result is that in a few minutes your saw is sharp and you can use the same configuration on almost any of your saws from 6″ gents to 22″ panel saws. After that, on large handsaws, you can still use the same pattern of sharpening or you can sharpen rip or fleam cut according to task.

Working with hand tools can be a frustrating experience unless you have sharp tools. The goal of this lesson is, with a mimimum of equipment, is for you to be able to produce razor sharp cutting edges on any tool blade consistently. This lesson focuses on honing. It was written by Maurice Fraser and is based on material and techniques taught in his classes at the Craft Students League in New York City.

What I use to Sharpen:
I use a Norton Combo Stone Kit and a 10,000 grit Chosera Stone (given to me by Joel as a gift, thanks Joel) At first I didn't use my Chosera much because I personally couldn't (still can't) feel a sharpness difference between it and a Norton 8000. However I have found that when I use the Chosera my tools stay sharp longer so now I use it every time. I think the work time I get between sharpness re-ups is worth the extra step.

I try not to use flattening stones (although some times you have to, especially on coarse stones.) They waste the rock you paid good money for. By being mindful of the feel of the blade on the stone it is possible to keep water stones flat longer by using the entire stone, and working the blade over any high spots that develop before they become too large. I seem to remember, although I can't find it now, that Joel wrote a blog entry about this technique as practiced by a visiting customer from Japan.

A convex bevel keeps its edge longer, is stronger than most other bevels and needs no special equipment beyond a pair of hands. Establishing the skill to sharpen the convex camber on the bevel of a chisel is amazingly fast and when you do, you have that skill for life.

The basic method of spherification is to drop drips of sodium alginate bearing juice into a bath of calcium chloride. To make a lot of them quickly you need to be able to make a lot of drops quickly. One method is to make a spherification rack.

…
My initial test told me that the rush was unnecessary, the flavor had a rather unpleasant tone that needed adjustment. So I did a bit more research.

First off, the recipes and methods out there on the web are for the most part ornamental and hardly gourmet. Seriously, there are better ways to do basic spherification.

The first thing to do is to replace the calcium chloride bath entirely. It makes the taste bitter/chalky and does nothing for you nutritionally. If you need to settle your stomach then maybe, but not if you want a delightful flavor. Calcium lactate barely has a flavor, and can be good for your teeth. It makes a much better caviar developing bath.

The second thing to do is to reduce the concentrations of the chemicals so you are working more with the initial flavors and less with the additional materials. The recipes out on the web are for the most part using way higher concentrations than are needed. The basic recipe that I give below may still be way more than what is needed.

This Wertheim catalog is probably the nicest, most complete 19th century tool catalog available on-line. The source material is in great shape, scans are great and the software allows you to zoom in to see details. In the catalog you will find lots of tools that aren't well know in the US or UK, partially because tool usage has changed and partially because European tools are different in some areas than English tools. Thanks to emails from Wolfgang Jordan I found out that this wasn't the only version of this catalog to survive, German editions are known in several private collections. Wolfgang also mentioned to me that the actual exhibition with the tools, which was considered fabulous at the time, ended up in the South Kensington Science Museum. I made some inquiries and found that the display was split up and most of the parts deaccessioned and sold of in the 20th century. The museum still has some section of a few remaining panels which occasionally are on display. The catalog is also one of the very few from the time with color plates and seeing it on line like this is a boon for tool collectors, historians, and users everywhere.

I know Peter has already covered this stuff dozens of times on his blog and in his book, but I figured I’d share my thoughts from the point of view of someone who has not done a lot of this kind of work. So here are a few observations I’ve made during the last week and a half of working on this project.

The result of their labor is the new Lost Art Press book "Make a Joint Stool from a Tree: An Introduction to 17th-century Joinery." This book starts in the woodlot, wedging open a piece of green oak, and it ends in the shop with mixing your own paint using pigment and linseed oil. It's an almost-breathtaking journey because it covers aspects of the craft that most modern woodworkers would never consider. And yet Alexander and Follansbee cover every detail of construction with such clarity that even beginning woodworkers will have the confidence to build a joint stool, an iconic piece of furniture from the 17th century.

Lots of people are building their own CNC routers, plasma cutters, or hot wire foam cutters. Many choose aluminum extrusion as the main structural component for its strength, flexible assembly options and accuracy. However, they all face the common challenge of finding a good way to mount motors, linear motion components, and drive systems. Industrial components that accomplish this can easily cost hundreds, if not thousands of dollars. While there is a reason for this cost, much of it is unnecessary, and adds little value for the DIYer. If you are building your own machine, you don't need fancy anodizing or a reseller's markup. You want quality, affordable components that bolt together with a minimum of fuss.
