The first bookwheel was designed in the 16th century by Agostino Ramelli, an Italian engineer. His version of the bookwheel rotates books vertically around an axis, utilizing epicyclic gears to keep books at a constant angle when rotated.

The goal of this project is to recreate two bookwheels, while maintaining historical accuracy in terms of material and design. The bookwheels will be displayed in RIT’s Cary Archives and in University of Rochester’s Robbins Library.

While studying architecture in school, I learned the Japanese term “wabi-sabi”-- the art of finding beauty in imperfection and acceptance of the natural cycle of growth, decay and death. Unlike the American cultural focus on spectacle, wabi-sabi is underplayed and modest, the kind of undeclared beauty that waits patiently to be discovered. For me, it’s found in the time-worn jackets of expired library books that have traveled through many hands and across county lines until they have reached their final resting place: warehouses where safe harbor can be found in Costco-sized rows of “discards” and “withdrawns” that rise within inches of the ceiling. After discovering an ancient check-out card in the back of a book at Goodwill several years ago, I felt the impending loss of those invaluable records. I made it my mission to find as many of them as I could to document and celebrate them. These gigantic warehouses are the places I began to haunt in search of that fleeting history inscribed on paper.

Summary
What this software does:

Allows users to define an optical system consisting of multiple image and pupil planes
Provides flexible and extensible optical element classes, including a wide variety of stops, masks, lenses and other optics
Computes monochromatic and polychromatic point spread functions through those optics
Provides an extensible framework for defining models of optical instruments, including selection of broad- and narrow-band filters, selectable optical components such as pupil stops, etc.

I like the idea of 'infinite scroll' but one of the problems with it is finding things that have passed by or getting interrupted and losing your place, this is where the scrapbook idea came in - just click on an image anywhere in the stream, it pops up and lets you add it to your scrapbook

Scrapbooks are shared between the search pages, you can mix and match items from different searches in the same scrapbook and create multiple scrapbooks

You should be able to link to searches, the url should contain your search terms, likewise you should be able to commence a search using keywords in the url, without having to enter them in the query input box (I say 'should' until I can prove that it always works!)

of social safety net for the digital divide. I'm not complaining, exactly, but it would have been
nice if that job had come with some money.
Libraries have responded to the demand by increasing access, doubling the number of public
computers in the past 10 years. 91% of public libraries provide free Wi-Fi, and 74% of libraries
report use of Wi-Fi increased in 2011. 62% of public libraries report that they are the only

Andrew Abbott writing a book on how to do research? I was destined to like this book before I opened it up. But having read it now, and with a critical (if biased) eye, I can honestly say that every student, professor, and intellectual needs to read it. It’s a superb ‘how to’ guide about writing a long research paper or thesis. But it’s more than that. It’s an entire theory of how scholars pursue scholarship. It’s a memoir of Abbott’s own research. It’s a pessimistic and slightly misanthropic ode to a quiet world of well-ordered card catalogs destroyed by the garish vulgarity of online databases. It’s an epigrammatic summary of a career’s worth of knowledge. It is — yes, I really mean this — life-affirming. It improved my own ability to do research. Everyone needs to read it. You need to read it.

If a supplied CSV is arbitrary, the only real way to make sure the data is correct is for an user to check it and eventually specify the delimiter, quoting rule,... Barring that you may end up with a error or worse silently corrupted data.

A while ago I got the idea to use Raspberry Pi’s as replacement OPACs in my library. Cheap, linux based computers with a very small footprint made them the ideal choice for slim mount terminals on bay ends. Sadly there were issues with mounting them on the ends of shelving units (no power, networking etc.) so they just remained where they were for now but they still work.
There is only one supplier of Raspberry Pi’s in Australia and that’s Element14 who were very helpful in setting up invoicing with our council which is always handy (they have lots of cool robotics tech as well but I prefer to use Altronics (big discounts for libraries/schools and will invoice) or Jaycar Electronics for my smaller electronics needs as they are both local).
Since I already had two DVI capable 24″ monitors, keyboards and mice, I purchased two Pi’s, two flash memory cards with NOOBS pre-installed, HDMI cables, HDMI-to-DVI converters, USB cables, two USB power supplies (if your terminals are next to each other you could get a double USB power supply and save money/power space). All up it cost about $50.00 AU each.
To save some money and to mount the Pi’s on the back of the monitors I printed out two Pi cases that had VESA mounts attached from Thingiverse on my 3D Printer. These worked really well and keep the Pi’s secure behind the monitor and makes for a neat install.

The importance of creating digital collections for small organizations is only increasing. Cultural changes have demanded more user-friendly ways to access information, such as from home or on mobile devices. In addition, social media, digital collaboration and crowdsourcing are now available to help create forums for sharing digital data.

The resources on this website will provide information on available options for creating inexpensive digital collections and planning a new project such as: hardware and software needs; time frame of projects; cost estimates and funding; and online management options.
