This is a list of small, free, or experimental tools that might be useful in building your game / website / interactive project. Although I’ve included ‘standards’, this list has a focus on artful tools and toys that are as fun to use as they are functional.

The goal of this list is to enable making entirely outside of closed production ecosystems or walled software gardens.

Cataclysm: Dark Days Ahead

Cataclysm: Dark Days Ahead is a turn-based survival game set in a post-apocalyptic world. Struggle to survive in a harsh, persistent, procedurally generated world. Scavenge the remnants of a dead civilization for food, equipment, or, if you are lucky, a vehicle with a full tank of gas to get you the hell out of Dodge. Fight to defeat or escape from a wide variety of powerful monstrosities, from zombies to giant insects to killer robots and things far stranger and deadlier, and against the others like yourself, that want what you have…
Gameplay

As your game begins, you awaken with hazy memories of violence and terror from when the world suddenly unravelled around you. Now you need to explore your surroundings, and secure food, water and safety. After that, who knows? Long term survival will mean tapping abilities you haven’t used before, learning to survive in this new environment, and developing new skills.

But Freedoom by itself is just the raw material for a game: it must be paired with a compatible game engine to be played. The download page lists some recommended ones.

id Software released the source code to their classic game, Doom, under the GNU General Public License. This means that the program code that powers Doom is free; Freedoom complements this with free levels, artwork, sound effects and music to make a completely free game.

Freedoom is actually three games in one, consisting of two single player campaigns and one set of levels intended for multiplayer deathmatch (FreeDM).

Arcane Fortune is a game of empire building, diplomacy, conquest, construction, and deconstruction. Whether or not you build a utopia, or a hell on earth is entirely up to you. The game is inspired by Civilization and SimCity, with the goal of having a similar level of detail and realism as Dwarf Fortress (although with more of a focus at the larger, macro-scale level). The longer-term scope of the project will include handling, managing and instigating social and political turmoil in your and other empires. The realism that I'm imagining will take years, decades, to approach where I'd like it to be. Since this project is less than two years old, you can see, it is really only just beginning.

The even longer-term scope of the project will involve trying to construct a formidable AI, likely with the aid of deep-learning techniques. AI is critical to extended-in-time strategy games which can take hours, days, or weeks to play out. It can be difficult to coordinate such games with others -- sometimes you want to play for 12 or more hours straight, other times you only have time or only want to play for a few hours -- having to coordinate all this with 10 or more other people is practically impossible, therefore the need is high for AI which will "happily" play for as long as you do but yet still offer a challenge that doesn't feel artificial (because it has to, for example, cheat to mount a decent challenge against any decent human).

But music production software doesn’t have to be so expensive.

In fact, if you take the Open Source Software (OSS) route, you can get cutting-edge music making tools for $0.

Finding all the right tools, however, is a challenge. A lot of existing OSS lists are outdated – some of these tools haven’t been updated since 2004. Most existing articles aren’t comprehensive enough.

Which is why I spent the last two days putting together the single most comprehensive list of current and available open source music production tools.

Every single tool in this list had to meet the following requirements:

It should be free – no strings attached
It should be open source, that is, you should be able to access the source code

OpenDiablo2 is an ARPG game engine in the same vein of the 2000's games, and supports playing Diablo 2. The engine is written in golang and is cross platform. However, please note that this project does not ship with the assets or content required to play Diablo 2. You must have a legally purchased copy of Diablo 2 and its expansion Lord of Destruction installed on your computer in order to run that game on this engine. If you have an original copy of the disks, those files should work fine as well.

We are currently working on features necessary to play Diablo 2 in its entirety. After this is completed, we will work on expanding the project to include tools and plugin support for modding, as well as writing completely new games with the engine.

Following this site

You can follow switching.software on the Fediverse via our Mastodon account. Other channels may follow in the future.
Origin of this site

Switching.software is a fork of a former website known as ‘switching.social’. It was created and maintained by an anonymous person and gained popularity in 2018 and 2019 - especially on the Fediverse.

In September 2019, the author took down all social media channels and the website itself. There hasn’t been any statement by them ever since. No matter the reasons, we want to thank them a lot for what they have achieved with this project - and wish them well.

To keep the project alive, the site was restored from different sources - resulting in a bunch of HTML pages. Since then, a loose team of enthusiasts has started a fork based on the original articles. We want to maintain and improve the project. Progress on this endeavor can be seen in our repository.

This protects you from nearly all web-based hacks, such as viruses, ransomware, browser and device zero day exploits, and also helps protect you from tracking, by changing your device fingerprint and IP address.

In more detail, the browser, normally is an executable application that runs on your device (phone, laptop). In RBI, instead you connect to a thin client web application that provides an interface to a browser that runs remotely. Remotely can mean in a VPS or VPC, in a physical box, or the public cloud.
