many don't realize that it's not just your Wi-Fi devices that are all on a single collision domain—it's all Wi-Fi devices on the same channel. Any, repeat, any transmission on the same channel ties up that channel, even if it's on a different network with a different SSID and different WPA key. The 802.11 wireless network specification uses Clear Channel Assessment to determine whether the channel is "busy" or not, and if CCA says "occupied," the wireless device has to wait its turn. If your laptop, phone, or tablet can "hear" the preamble of another 802.11 transmission at -82 dBM, whether it's on your network or not, it has to sit tight, shut up, and wait its turn to speak.

Even if your device can't understand a preamble, any RF signal strength at -62 dBm is enough to make the channel "busy" for 802.11a/b/g/n networks or -72 dBm for 802.11ac devices. This is not a lot of signal strength

In some cases, Create means PUT, but in other cases it means POST. Likewise, in some cases Update means POST, while in others it means PUT.

The crux of the issue comes down to a concept known as idempotency. An operation is idempotent if a sequence of two or more of the same operation results in the same resource state as would a single instance of that operation. According to the HTTP 1.1 specification, GET, HEAD, PUT and DELETE are idempotent, while POST is not. That is, a sequence of multiple attempts to PUT data to a URL will result in the same resource state as a single attempt to PUT data to that URL, but the same cannot be said of a POST request. This is why a browser always pops up a warning dialog when you back up over a POSTed form. “Are you sure you want to purchase that item again!?” (Would that the warning was always this clear!)

Not to in any way underscore the importance of the other technologies listed so I encourage you to check out the the full list whenever you have time.

We all resonate with this adage. We want to be that person who understands and can explain the underpinning of the systems we depend on. And yet, if you’re a web developer, you might be moving in the opposite direction.

Web development is becoming more and more specialized. What kind of web developer are you? Frontend? Backend? Ops? Big data analytics? UI/UX? Storage? Video? Messaging? I would add “Performance Engineer” making that list of possible specializations even longer.

It’s hard to balance studying the foundations of the technology stack with the need to keep up with the latest innovations. And yet, if we don’t understand the foundation our knowledge is hollow, shallow. Knowing how to use the topmost layers of the technology stack isn’t enough. When the complex problems need to be solved, when the inexplicable happens, the person who understands the foundation leads the way.

But cynical types who suspect their Internet Service Providers (ISPs) intentionally degrade streaming video may be right as well. No, your ISP (probably) isn't sniffing your traffic every time you click a YouTube or Netflix link, ready to throttle your bandwidth. But behind the scenes, in negotiations that almost never become public, the world's biggest Internet providers and video services argue over how much one network should pay to connect to another. When these negotiations fail, users suffer. In other words, bad video performance is often caused not just by technology problems but also by business decisions made by the companies that control the Internet.

Hello. My name is Ed Snowden. A little over one month ago, I had family, a home in paradise, and I lived in great comfort. I also had the capability without any warrant to search for, seize, and read your communications. Anyone’s communications at any time. That is the power to change people’s fates.

It is also a serious violation of the law. The 4th and 5th Amendments to the Constitution of my country, Article 12 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and numerous statutes and treaties forbid such systems of massive, pervasive surveillance. While the US Constitution marks these programs as illegal, my government argues that secret court rulings, which the world is not permitted to see, somehow legitimize an illegal affair. These rulings simply corrupt the most basic notion of justice – that it must be seen to be done. The immoral cannot be made moral through the use of secret law.

I believe in the principle declared at Nuremberg in 1945: "Individuals have international duties which transcend the national obligations of obedience. Therefore individual citizens have the duty to violate domestic laws to prevent crimes against peace and humanity from occurring."

Accordingly, I did what I believed right and began a campaign to correct this wrongdoing. I did not seek to enrich myself. I did not seek to sell US secrets. I did not partner with any foreign government to guarantee my safety. Instead, I took what I knew to the public, so what affects all of us can be discussed by all of us in the light of day, and I asked the world for justice.

That moral decision to tell the public about spying that affects all of us has been costly, but it was the right thing to do and I have no regrets.

But apparently that is no longer the case in Silicon Valley, where these days not a week goes by without a rumor about yet another company raising money at or near a $1 billion valuation.

Lately there’s been Snapchat, an app that lets you send photos that disappear in seconds, which TechCrunch reports has raised money at an $800 million valuation, two weeks after originally reporting that the company was being valued at $1 billion. Also rumored to be valued at $1 billion are Path, a social network, and Fab.com, an online commerce site.

This might not be so strange, except these companies (e.g. Snapchat, Path) have little in the way of revenue, and as for profits, well, you must be joking.

Wikipedia describes it as ‘the most valuable fixed asset of a Corporation,’ which, whilst perhaps a little exaggerated, is all too true in the light of the hugely competitive markets that exist today where branding is often sadly overlooked.
Firms like Apple, which capitalize on branding so effectively, understand the importance of a successful brand, and have built their fortunes on their incredibly valuable and attractive product form and consistent styling. Despite this being the result of billions of dollars of research and advertising, branding arises with or without intervention, with your customers having opinions on your business, whether they’re good or bad, branding is at work.

Trick question! None of them have it all, atleast not yet. We will get better at developers at tackling problems like testability, and bots and browsers will likely get better at problems like searchability and performance. So, yes, it's a bit of a risk to do go as far as the single page webapp approach today, but it will be less and less of a risk as time goes on.

From Plato to Aurobindo, from Vygotsky to Montessori, centuries of educational thinking have vigorously debated a central pedagogical question: How do we spark creativity, curiosity, and wonder in children? But those who philosophized pre-Google were prevented from wondering just how the Internet might influence the contemporary answer to this age-old question. Today, we can and must; a generation that has not known a world without vast global and online connectivity demands it of us.

But first, a bit of history: to keep the world's military-industrial machine running at the zenith of the British Empire, Victorians assembled an education system to mass-produce workers with identical skills. Plucked from the classroom and plugged instantly into the system, citizens were churned through an educational factory engineered for maximum productivity.

Like most things designed by the Victorians, it was a robust system. It worked. Schools, in a sense, manufactured generations of workers for an industrial age.

But what got us here, won't get us there. Schools today are the product of an expired age; standardized curricula, outdated pedagogy, and cookie cutter assessments are relics of an earlier time. Schools still operate as if all knowledge is contained in books, and as if the salient points in books must be stored in each human brain -- to be used when needed. The political and financial powers controlling schools decide what these salient points are. Schools ensure their storage and retrieval. Students are rewarded for memorization, not imagination or resourcefulness.

Today we're seeing institutions -- banking, the stock exchange, entertainment, newspapers, even health care -- capture and share knowledge through strings of zeros and ones inside the evolving Internet... "the cloud." While some fields are already far advanced in understanding how the Internet age is transforming their structure and substance, we're just beginning to understand the breadth and depth of its implications on the future of education.

I nearly sobbed all the water out of my body as I gazed upon “JAKE’S COOL WEBSITE” bobbing back and forth in uppercase serif. Of course, we’re more mature as an industry these days.
We’ve learned that users don’t want websites to look like a CSI console having a personal crisis; instead, we go for smooth transitions that enhance the experience, rather than being the experience themselves. In terms of animation APIs, we’ve been poorly catered to, leaving us to hack around with timers that weren’t really built for animation.

For years, I've believed that the notion of a marketing 'campaign' is dead. And I’m not the only one who thinks it. In the words of Joseph Jaffe, “Marketing is not a campaign, it's a commitment.” And Eric Wheeler wrote in the AdAge article "Ad Campaigns Are Dead," “Power has shifted away from brands to consumers ... Suddenly, it's no longer about the campaign.”

Paul Dunay has written, "there is no campaign in social media," while Joe Pulizzi said in a video interview that "content marketing is not a campaign, it is a promise to our customers." Even Bill Lee, in his Harvard Business Review article, "Marketing Is Dead," said, "Traditional marketing may be dead, but the new possibilities of peer influence-based, community-oriented marketing ..." (which some of us might call 'inbound marketing' ... wink wink) “... hold much greater promise for creating sustained growth through authentic customer relationships.”

Finally, three years ago, Brian Halligan wrote in his 2010 marketing wish list, "My blood curdles every time I hear someone talk about doing a 'social media campaign' or 'blog campaign.' Blogs and social media behave like compound interest, so if you treat them like 'campaigns,' you lose all the benefits. Marketers should be permanently creating, optimizing, promoting, converting, and analyzing."

So, if the marketing campaign is dead, why is it dead, and what do we do now? Let’s start off with some of the reasons why it's dead ...

Campaigns are temporary, but today, the internet is forever.

Across the nation, elementary schools to universities are eager to join the classroom technology trend. Fuzzy overhead projectors and physical textbooks are being swiftly replaced by more effective document projection camera systems and interactive Web-based learning activities. The new equipment saves time and makes note taking easier, while websites such as Khan Academy and Connect are touted as the future of the education industry. Cohen, the 10-4-1 Rule is a ratio that serves as a guideline for the right balance of content to publish in social media. For every 15 of your social media updates, 10 should be pieces of other people's content, 4 should be your own blog articles, and 1 should be a landing page. Make that a rule, follow that ratio no matter how much you post, and it will help you grow your reach (by promoting other people's content), send traffic to your website, and generate leads! If you're a HubSpot customer, it's now really easy to share other peoples' content with the new social bookmarklet. 5.Create a list of gurus/experts. If you impress the people listed well enough, or find a way to make your project look somewhat official, the gurus may end up linking to your site or saying thanks. This post is here to help. In it, I'll try to take a brief look at the topics surrounding this problem and offer some solutions, tools and methodologies to make things easier.
