Now that the Android 4.4 KitKat fanfare is (finally) settling down, it's time to revisit our Getting To Know Android series, where we bring to light the new and awesome changes in Google's newest mobile OS - exposing the big stuff right along with some interface changes you may not have noticed yet.
There are plenty of new pixels in Android 4.4, changed UI elements, new design patterns, and a slightly more sophisticated language to decode, along with plenty of new features. The newest revision isn't without its faults (we'll get into those in the next Stock Android Isn't Perfect) but we've got plenty to cover.
In this post we'll mainly be looking at user-facing changes, interface tweaks, and visual elements, but if you want a great run-down of some of the invisible features of KitKat (like support for IR blasters, new SELinux policy, etc.) check out our compendium of new feature coverage here.

Even though I think Google AdWords is one of the greatest advertising systems there is, I’m the first to admit that Google makes it really easy to waste your money. A lot of the default settings in AdWords are there to maximize your reach -- which is great if you want the highest possible number of clicks.
But remember: this is pay-per-click marketing, and those click costs are going to add up fast if you cast a really wide net.

The problem is, when you reach more people, you’re generally sacrificing relevance. Many of the people who click your ads aren’t going to be your ideal customer, and, in the end, that hurts your ROI.

The best way to increase your ROI from AdWords is to take measures that whittle down your audience to the most relevant potential customers. Luckily, there are lots of ways to do this in AdWords -- you just have to know what they are.

Here are the top-six ways to filter out unwanted clicks and reduce your wasted spend in AdWords.

I, like many of you, use Google Apps for my email, mainly because it is very convenient and has excellent spam filtering capabilities. However, to ensure that messages show up properly and that they don't end up in spam, there are some steps that need to be taken. In this post, I will give some helpful hints and samples for configuring your Google Apps' Gmail service so that your messages aren't classified as spam, and so that the dreaded "via" field doesn't show up.

The "via" field is something that Gmail adds when you try to send email through it from alternate email addresses (some clients refer to it as on-behalf-of). For example, my main domain is korokithakis.net, but I want to send mail from stavros.io, without running a separate mail server. When incorrectly configured, Gmail messages with a stavros.io email appear on other Gmail inboxes (and other clients) as "whatever@stavros.io via stavros@korokithakis.net", which is unsightly.

Without further ado, let's look at what configuration changes we can make so our stuff shows up properly.

He also stated that Penguin 2.0 should help many small to mid-sized businesses that play by the rules and avoid black hat SEO. It should also help authority sites gain traction while decreasing the rankings of sites that merely provide generic fluff.

The ultimate goal is to cut back on link spamming and hacking, while providing webmasters with the tools to fix hacked sites. Since "cluster results," where a cluster of results from the same website have been somewhat of a problem, they have also addressed this issue. Consequently, search results should be more balanced where one particular site doesn't dominate the first page of a search term.

For your Mac, there are paid solutions for this but the most simple and inexpensive one (free) is this one and works for all devices. Fewer quality apps are in Google Play than in the iTunes Store. Part of the reason for this is that Android has been going through puberty in the past few years. It was disorganized and erratic, and many designers avoided it — even hated it — and naturally gravitated towards iOS.
Some of Android’s problems no longer exist, and others have been blown out of proportion. For the ones that do exist, we’ll provide guidance on how to deal with them and how to start designing your first great Android app.

Today is one of those rare days: at the Open Networking Summit in Santa Clara, California, Hölzle is announcing that Google essentially has remade a major part of its massive internal network, providing the company a bonanza in savings and efficiency. Google has done this by brashly adopting a new and radical open-source technology called OpenFlow.

Hölzle says that the idea behind this advance is the most significant change in networking in the entire lifetime of Google.

In the course of his presentation Hölzle will also confirm for the first time that Google — already famous for making its own servers — has been designing and manufacturing much of its own networking equipment as well.

Most Android apps have some sort of server-side back end, to persist and share data. Even the most basic game needs to remember its players’ high scores. When you’re building your back end, one problem you have to solve is how the back-end code knows what app it’s talking to and who the person using it is.

You probably have HTTP endpoints for communicating with your client apps, but how can the server-side code be sure who’s sending messages to it? After all, anyone can send HTTP POST requests from anywhere; could they impersonate your users if they could guess their identities?

It’s really user-unfriendly to ask people to type in usernames and passwords on mobile devices. In particular, if someone has installed your app and given it permission to use the Internet and know your identity, they shouldn’t be pestered any more.

It turns out that Google Play services, now available on every compatible device running Android release 2.2 or higher, offers a good solution to this problem, based on the use of Google Accounts.

A common reaction to any discussion of new Web APIs is a denouncement that it may be many years before any of these can be used in the wild. However, I’m extremely optimistic for the future.

While many of these APIs will take some time to filter over to other browsers, the market share that WebKit wields will pressure other browser vendors to offer their own implementations. Indeed, it hasn’t taken long for HTML5 features to become production viable. As for backwards compatibility, many of these APIs can be poly-filled, or progressively degraded.

The reason why the future is so bright is evergreen browsers, or browsers that automatically update in the background. It takes about 18 weeks for a new feature in Chrome’s Canary to be rolled out to its ~350 million users. That’s an incredibly fast adoption rate, and innovation is happening quicker than ever before.

2013 is going to be a big year for the web!

This change was made because we realized we had a lot of bugs in the platform itself where async tasks where created that had implicit ordering dependences, so with the default parallel execution there were subtle rare bugs that would result.

I can't address how much smarter you are than the rest of us, but I am pretty convinced that for the vast majority of us the best thing to do is have the default here be safe, allowing developers to change it for the specific cases where they don't want that behavior.

This is a lesson I seem to learn every few years: multithreading is hard.
