Die uitwassen van netwerken zie je ook in leiderloze organisaties. Het meest in het oog springende voorbeeld is het softwarebedrijf Valve, ooit een natte droom van goeroes: geen bazen, geen managers. De werknemers kiezen zelf met wie en aan welke projecten ze werken. Sinds enkele high profile anonieme getuigenissen weten we echter beter. De vlakke bedrijfscultuur is een façade. Daarachter schuilt een giftige machtsstrijd tussen kliekjes, zeg maar baronieën. Denk terug aan de middelbareschooltijd, maar dan zonder leraren of regels om pestkoppen terug te fluiten. Een groepje deelt de lakens uit en je kan beter zorgen dat je op een goed blaadje staat bij die dominante coalitie. Je mag de beste ideeën hebben of het hardst werken, als je een bedreiging vormt, lig je eruit zonder verhaal.

Het schijnbaar ontbreken van formele regels verbergt de onderliggende dwang en de inefficiënties van de leiderloze organisatie. In tegenstelling tot in een ‘normale’ hiërarchie zijn er geen checks-and-balances die de baronnen in toom houden. Seksuele intimidatie en vriendjespolitiek zijn de dealmakers.
Het meest fundamentele probleem van de leiderloze organisatie is het gebrek aan besluitvaardigheid. Wie ooit gewerkt heeft onder een leider die geen beslissingen durft te nemen, kent de frustratie. Beslissen is de essentie van leiderschap. In de leiderloze organisatie is onduidelijkheid over beslissingen een onoplosbaar probleem. Door regels en structuren maak je duidelijk en transparant hoe de groep en de organisatie werken en wie verantwoordelijkheid neemt bij beslissingen, vooral bij verkeerde. Paradoxaal genoeg zijn op de snel veranderende arbeidsmarkt van de toekomst leiders, zelfs managers, die verantwoordelijkheid voor beslissingen durven te nemen meer dan ooit nodig. De leiderloze organisatie leidt nergens heen.
