This book is a gentle introduction to Sage for undergraduate students during Calculus II, Multivariate Calculus, Differential Equations, Linear Algebra, Math Modeling, or Operations Research.

This book assumes no background in programming, but the reader who finishes the book will have learned about 60 percent of a first semester computer science course, including much of the Python programming language. The audience is not only math majors, but also physics, engineering, environmental science, finance, chemistry, economics, data science, and computer science majors. Many of the book's examples are drawn from those fields. Filled with “challenges” for the students to test their progress, the book is also ideal for self-study.

What's New in the Second Edition:

In 2019, Sage transitioned from Python 2 to Python 3, which changed the syntax in several significant ways, including for the print command. All the examples in this book have been rewritten to be compatible with Python 3. Moreover, every code block longer than four lines has been placed in an archive on the book's website http://www.sage-for-undergraduates.org that is maintained by the author, so that the students won't have to retype the code! The number of “challenges” for the students to test their own progress in learning Sage has roughly doubled, which will be a great boon for self-study.
There's approximately 150 pages of new content, including:
New projects on Leontief Input-Output Analysis and on Environmental Science
New sections on Complex Numbers and Complex Analysis, on SageTex, and on solving problems via Monte-Carlo Simulations.
The first three sections of Chapter 1 have been completely rewritten to give absolute beginners a smoother transition into Sage.

We highly recommend pairing R4DS with the RStudio cheatsheets. These cheatsheets have been carefully designed to pack a lot of information into a small amount of space. You can keep them handy at your desk and quickly jog your memory when you get stuck. Most of the cheatsheets have been translated into multiple languages.

This is the synthesizer plug-in Surge which (@kurasu) Claes Johanson previously sold as a commercial product via the company vember audio.

As he is too busy with other projects and no longer wanted to put the effort into maintaining Surge across multiple platforms, he decided to give it new life as an open-source project.

It was originally released in 2005, and was one of Claes’ first bigger projects. It is reliable and sounds great.

The codebase was migrated from before an unfinished 1.6 release, which improves on the last released 1.5.3 in a number of ways:

    <title>[1202.4503] A Critical Look at Decentralized Personal Data Architectures</title>

    <dc:creator>Vaguery</dc:creator><description><![CDATA[While the Internet was conceived as a decentralized network, the most widely used web applications today tend toward centralization. Control increasingly rests with centralized service providers who, as a consequence, have also amassed unprecedented amounts of data about the behaviors and personalities of individuals.
Developers, regulators, and consumer advocates have looked to alternative decentralized architectures as the natural response to threats posed by these centralized services. The result has been a great variety of solutions that include personal data stores (PDS), infomediaries, Vendor Relationship Management (VRM) systems, and federated and distributed social networks. And yet, for all these efforts, decentralized personal data architectures have seen little adoption. 
This position paper attempts to account for these failures, challenging the accepted wisdom in the web community on the feasibility and desirability of these approaches. We start with a historical discussion of the development of various categories of decentralized personal data architectures. Then we survey the main ideas to illustrate the common themes among these efforts. We tease apart the design characteristics of these systems from the social values that they (are intended to) promote. We use this understanding to point out numerous drawbacks of the decentralization paradigm, some inherent and others incidental. We end with recommendations for designers of these systems for working towards goals that are achievable, but perhaps more limited in scope and ambition.]]></description>

Because a molecule graph is connected and reactions in general involve multiple molecules, the rewriting must be performed on multisets of graphs. We present a general software package for this type of graph rewriting system, which can be used for modelling chemical systems. The package contains a C++ library with algorithms for working with transformation rules in the Double Pushout formalism, e.g., composition of rules and a domain specific language for programming graph language generation. A Python interface makes these features easily accessible. The package also has extensive procedures for automatically visualising not only graphs and rewrite rules, but also Double Pushout diagrams and graph languages in form of directed hypergraphs. The software is available as an open source package, and interactive examples can be found on the accompanying webpage.

Users are increasingly dependant on devices that consume and produce data in ever increasing volumes. A popular solution is to have a central repository which each device accesses after centrally managed authentication. This model of use is facilitated by cloud based file synchronisation services such as Dropbox, OneDrive, Google Drive and Apple iCloud. Cloud architecture allows the provisioning of storage space with "always-on" access. Recent concerns over unauthorised access to third party systems and large scale exposure of private data have made an alternative solution desirable. These events have caused users to assess their own security practices and the level of trust placed in third party storage services. One option is BitTorrent Sync, a cloudless synchronisation utility provides data availability and redundancy. This utility replicates files stored in shares to remote peers with access controlled by keys and permissions. While lacking the economies brought about by scale, complete control over data access has made this a popular solution. The ability to replicate data without oversight introduces risk of abuse by users as well as difficulties for forensic investigators. This paper suggests a methodology for investigation and analysis of the protocol to assist in the control of data flow across security perimeters.

    <dc:creator>Vaguery</dc:creator><description><![CDATA[Epistemology is the branch of philosophy that deals with gaining knowledge. It is closely related to ontology. The branch that deals with questions like "What is real?" and "What do we know?" as it provides these components. When using modeling and simulation, we usually imply that we are doing so to either apply knowledge, in particular when we are using them for training and teaching, or that we want to gain new knowledge, for example when doing analysis or conducting virtual experiments. This paper looks at the history of science to give a context to better cope with the question, how we can gain knowledge from simulation. It addresses aspects of computability and the general underlying mathematics, and applies the findings to validation and verification and development of federations. As simulations are understood as computable executable hypotheses, validation can be understood as hypothesis testing and theory building. The mathematical framework allows furthermore addressing some challenges when developing federations and the potential introduction of contradictions when composing different theories, as they are represented by the federated simulation systems.

ConTeXt's way of separating form from content feels much cleaner than LaTeX, and I feel like the learning curve for ConTeXt has a fairly constant and gentle slope, rather than a hockey-stick-like bend for when you want to customise a Class file."

You see, one of the great benefits of describing a problem as a Finite State Machine (FSM) is that you can complete the logic of the problem. That is, if you can enumerate the states and the events, then you know that the number of paths through the system is no larger than S * E. Or, rather, there are no more than S*E transitions from one state to another. More importantly, enumerating them is simply a matter of creating a transition for every combination of state and event.

One of the more persistent problems in BDD (and TDD for that matter) is knowing when you are done. That is, how do you know that you have written enough scenarios (tests). Perhaps there is some condition that you have forgotten to explore, some pathway through the system that you have not described."
