    <dc:creator>Vaguery</dc:creator><description><![CDATA[Parametric fonts are programatically defined fonts with variable parameters, pioneered by Donald Kunth with his MetaFont technology in the 1980s. While Donald Knuth's ideas in MetaFont and subsequently in MetaPost are often seen as legacy techniques from the pre-graphical user interface (GUI) era of type design, recent trends like variable fonts suggest a resurgence of certain principles. This paper explores a modern type design process built on parametric design principles, specifically using MetaPost. The author created two variable fonts with this method and released them under a free, open-source license. The paper details the methodology, workflow, and insights gained from this process.

    <title>[2107.00613] EqFix: Fixing LaTeX Equation Errors by Examples</title>

Its powerful ability in mathematical equation editing is perhaps the main reason for its popularity in academia. Sometimes, however, even an expert user may spend much time on fixing an erroneous equation. In this paper, we present EqFix, a synthesis-based repairing system for LaTeX equations. It employs a set of fixing rules, and can suggest possible repairs for common errors in LaTeX equations. A domain specific language is proposed for formally expressing the fixing rules. The fixing rules can be automatically synthesized from a set of input-output examples. An extension of relaxer is also introduced to enhance the practicality of EqFix. We evaluate EqFix on real-world examples and find that it can synthesize rules with high generalization ability. Compared with a state-of-the-art string transformation synthesizer, EqFix solved 37% more cases and spent only one third of their synthesis time.

    <title>[2106.09432] Unsupervised Training Data Generation of Handwritten Formulas using Generative Adversarial Networks with Self-Attention</title>

    <dc:creator>Vaguery</dc:creator><description><![CDATA[The recognition of handwritten mathematical expressions in images and video frames is a difficult and unsolved problem yet. Deep convectional neural networks are basically a promising approach, but typically require a large amount of labeled training data. However, such a large training dataset does not exist for the task of handwritten formula recognition. In this paper, we introduce a system that creates a large set of synthesized training examples of mathematical expressions which are derived from LaTeX documents. For this purpose, we propose a novel attention-based generative adversarial network to translate rendered equations to handwritten formulas. The datasets generated by this approach contain hundreds of thousands of formulas, making it ideal for pretraining or the design of more complex models. We evaluate our synthesized dataset and the recognition approach on the CROHME 2014 benchmark dataset. Experimental results demonstrate the feasibility of the approach.

    <dc:creator>Vaguery</dc:creator><description><![CDATA[Syntax highlighting in the form of colours and font diversification, is an excellent tool to provide clarity, concision and correctness to writings. Unfortunately, this practice is not widely adopted, which results in often hard-to-parse papers. The reasons for this lack of adoption is that researchers often struggle to embrace new technologies, piling up unconvincing motivations. This paper argues against such motivations and justifies the usage of syntax highlighting so that it can become a new standard for dissemination of clearer and more understandable research. Moreover, this paper reports on the criticism grounded on the shortcomings of using syntax highlighting in LATEX and suggests remedies to that. We believe this paper can be used as a guide to using syntax highlighting as well as a reference to counter unconvincing motivations against it.

Particular focus is made on the software usability and interoperability with other tools. Simple networks can be directly created within LaTeX, while more complex networks can be imported from external sources (e.g. igraph, networkx, QGIS, ...). Bold graph drawing considers more realistic drawings consisting of vertices as disks of some radius and edges as rectangles of some width. However, the relationship that links these readability criteria with the rendering criteria in node-link diagrams has still not been well-established. 
This paper introduces a model, so-called INKA (Ink-Active), that encapsulates mathematically the relationship between all common drawing factors. Consequently, we investigate our INKA model on several common drawing algorithms and real-world graphs.]]></description>

    <dc:creator>Vaguery</dc:creator><description><![CDATA[Building on recent advances in image caption generation and optical character recognition (OCR), we present a general-purpose, deep learning-based system to decompile an image into presentational markup. While this task is a well-studied problem in OCR, our method takes an inherently different, data-driven approach. Our model does not require any knowledge of the underlying markup language, and is simply trained end-to-end on real-world example data. The model employs a convolutional network for text and layout recognition in tandem with an attention-based neural machine translation system. To train and evaluate the model, we introduce a new dataset of real-world rendered mathematical expressions paired with LaTeX markup, as well as a synthetic dataset of web pages paired with HTML snippets. Experimental results show that the system is surprisingly effective at generating accurate markup for both datasets. While a standard domain-specific LaTeX OCR system achieves around 25% accuracy, our model reproduces the exact rendered image on 75% of examples.

ConTeXt's way of separating form from content feels much cleaner than LaTeX, and I feel like the learning curve for ConTeXt has a fairly constant and gentle slope, rather than a hockey-stick-like bend for when you want to customise a Class file."
