    <title>[2403.18369] Damage Mechanics Challenge: Predictions based on the phase field fracture model</title>

    <dc:creator>Vaguery</dc:creator><description><![CDATA[In this work, we describe our contribution to the Purdue-SANDIA-LLNL \emph{Damage Mechanics Challenge}. The phase field fracture model is adopted to blindly estimate the failure characteristics of the challenge test, an unconventional three-point bending experiment on an additively manufactured rock resembling a type of gypsum. The model is formulated in a variationally consistent fashion, incorporating a volumetric-deviatoric strain energy decomposition, and the numerical implementation adopts a monolithic unconditionally stable solution scheme. Our focus is on providing an efficient and simple yet rigorous approach capable of delivering accurate predictions based solely on physical parameters. Model inputs are Young's modulus E, Poisson's ratio ν, toughness Gc and strength σc (as determined by the choice of phase field length scale ℓ). We show that a single mode I three-point bending test is sufficient to calibrate the model, and that the calibrated model can then reliably predict the force versus displacement responses, crack paths and surface crack morphologies of more intricate three-point bending experiments that are inherently mixed-mode. Importantly, our peak load, crack trajectory and crack surface morphology predictions for the challenge test, submitted before the experimental data was released, show a remarkable agreement with experiments. The characteristics of the challenge, and how changes in these can impact the predictive abilities of phase field fracture models, are also discussed.

Scrum is the most frequently used agile framework, but it is often reported to be adapted in practice. Objective: Thus, we aim to understand how Scrum is adapted in different contexts and what are the reasons for these changes. Method: Using a structured interview guideline, we interviewed ten German companies about their concrete usage of Scrum and analysed the results qualitatively. Results: All companies vary Scrum in some way. The least variations are in the Sprint length, events, team size and requirements engineering. Many users varied the roles, effort estimations and quality assurance. Conclusions: Many variations constitute a substantial deviation from Scrum as initially proposed. For some of these variations, there are good reasons. Sometimes, however, the variations are a result of a previous non-agile, hierarchical organisation.

    <dc:creator>Vaguery</dc:creator><description><![CDATA[Nanoparticles (NPs) are widely used in diverse application areas, such as medicine, engineering, and cosmetics. The size (or volume) of NPs is one of the most important parameters for their successful application. It is relatively straightforward to determine the volume of regular NPs such as spheres and cubes from a one-dimensional or two-dimensional measurement. However, due to the three-dimensional nature of NPs, it is challenging to determine the proper physical size of many types of regularly and irregularly-shaped NPs (IS-NPs) at high-throughput using a single tool. Here, we present a relatively simple method that statistically determines a better volume estimate of many types of NPs by combining measurements from their top-down projection areas and peak-heights using two tools. The proposed method is significantly faster and more economical than the electron tomography method. We demonstrate the improved accuracy of the combined method over scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) by using both modeling and measurements. This study also shows that SEM provides a more accurate estimate of size than AFM for most IS-NP size measurements. The method provides a much needed, proper high-throughput volumetric measurement method useful for many applications.

We might suppose that it is a kind of invasion: The rationalizers and quantifiers are over the ridge! They’re coming for our sensitive expressions of the human condition! But if technology and culture are already mixed up with each other, then this doesn’t make much sense. Aren’t the rationalizers expressing their own cultural ideas? Aren’t our sensitive expressions dependent on our tools? In the present moment, as companies like Netflix proliferate, stories trying to make sense of the relationship between culture and technology also proliferate. In my own research, I examine these stories, as told by people from a variety of positions relative to the technology in question. There are many such stories, and they can have far-reaching consequences for how technical systems are designed, built, evaluated, and understood.]]></description>

In the early 1970’s, Seth Bonder created “Concepts in Mathematical Modeling of Large Scale Systems”, a seminar type course in which students were asked to develop models of poorly specified but real “operational situations”.  The goal was not to create “solutions” to problems, but to understand the process by which the mathematical representation of these operational situations could be formulated, simplified, tested and exposited, and – hopefully – used in practice and transferred to other practitioners.  Seth and I collaborated on it for a few years, and in the early 1970’s, after he left to run Vector research Inc., I assumed responsibility for it (which I jealousy guarded for over three decades!).  This course evolved into what is now called the “modeling studio”.  Pride in this course (and its principles) prompts me to leave humility aside and brag that many ex-students who suffered through its demanding time and creativity requirements have written to say it was the most influential educational experience they had at Michigan.  Equally satisfying is to know that colleagues throughout the country have adapted versions for use at their own institutions.  I even manage to publish a few papers about it.  Since my retirement professor Amy Cohn picked up the cause, which augurs well for the education of future operations engineers.

One approach to characterize a deepwater reservoir and to predict its producibility is by analyzing its depositional information. This research proposes a deposition-based stratigraphic interpretation framework for deepwater reservoir characterization. In this framework, one critical task is the identification and labeling of the stratigraphic components in the reservoir, according to their depositional environments. This interpretation process is labor intensive and can produce different results depending on the stratigrapher who performs the analysis. To relieve stratigrapher's workload and to produce more consistent results, we have developed a novel methodology to automate this process using various computational intelligence techniques. Using a well log data set, we demonstrate that the developed methodology and the designed workflow can produce finite state transducer models that interpret deepwater reservoir depositional environments adequately.]]></description>

Given a binary sparse N-dimensional signal x, how to construct a sparse binary MxN pooling matrix F such that the signal can be reconstructed from the smallest possible number M of measurements y=Fx? We show that a very low number of measurements is possible for random spatially coupled design of pools F. Our design might find application in genetic screening or compressed genotyping. We show that our results are robust with respect to the uncertainty in the matrix F when some elements are mistaken]]></description>

For a rigid body to be in static equilibrium the condition is that net force and net torque acting on the body should be zero. That clearly signifies that if equal weights are placed on either sides of a balance, the balance should be in equilibrium, even if its beam is not horizontal (we have considered the beam to be straight and have no thickness, an ideal case). Thus, although the weights are equal, they will appear different which is puzzling. This also shows that the concept of equilibrium is confusing, especially neutral equilibrium is confused to be stable equilibrium. The study not only throws more light on the concept of static equilibrium, but also clarifies that a structure need not be firm and steady even if it is in static equilibrium.]]></description>

During May 6, there were hundreds of times that a single stock had over 1,000 quotes from one exchange in a single second. Even more disturbing, there doesn't seem to be any economic justification for this. In many of the cases, the bid/offer is well outside the National Best Bid/Offer (NBBO). We decided to analyze a handful of these cases in detail and graphed the sequential bid/offers to better understand them. What we discovered was a manipulative device with destabilizing effect."

    <dc:creator>Vaguery</dc:creator><description><![CDATA["Isolated, atomically thin conducting membranes of graphite, called graphene, have recently been the subject of intense research with the hope that practical applications in fields ranging from electronics to energy science will emerge. Here, we show that when immersed in ionic solution, a layer of graphene takes on new electrochemical properties that make it a trans-electrode. The trans-electrode's properties are the consequence of the atomic scale proximity of its two opposing liquid-solid interfaces together with graphene's well known in-plane conductivity. We show that several trans-electrode properties are revealed by ionic conductivity measurements on a CVD grown graphene membrane that separates two aqueous ionic solutions. Despite this membrane being only one to two atomic layers thick, we find it is a remarkable ionic insulator with a very small stable conductivity that depends on the ion species in solution.…"

    <dc:creator>Vaguery</dc:creator><description><![CDATA["Motivated by constraint-based CAD software, we develop the foundation for the rigidity theory of a very general model: the body-and-cad structure, composed of rigid bodies in 3D constrained by pairwise coincidence, angular and distance constraints. We identify 21 relevant geometric constraints and develop the corresponding infinitesimal rigidity theory for these structures. The classical body-and-bar rigidity model can be viewed as a body-and-cad structure that uses only one constraint from this new class. As a consequence, we identify a new, necessary, but not sufficient, counting condition for minimal rigidity of body-and-cad structures: nested sparsity. This is a slight generalization of the well-known sparsity condition of Maxwell."

    <dc:creator>Vaguery</dc:creator><description><![CDATA["Extensive research has been done to analyze the phenomenon of open source software development from various perspectives. By contrast little is known about open source development of tangible objects, so–called open design, so far. Until recently, limitations to the availability of successful empirical examples of this ‘new innovation model’ outside software may have been a key reason for this gap.

This paper contributes to the literature on the open source mode of product development by providing a quantitative study (N = 85) of open design projects. Our goal is to explore the landscape of open source development in the world of atoms, to analyze project characteristics, structures, and success, and to investigate similarities and dissimilarities to open source software development."

The author has also personally experienced the boost of what is here termed pairwork in a university setting during the startup phase of several educational and interdisciplinary initiatives. The paper briefly explores pairwork in the history of technology and constructs both qualitative and little quantitative models of pairwork. The quantitative model under reasonable assumptions easily recovers Harik’s 20x boost. The paper also briefly examines the author’s recent experiences with pairwork in four interdisciplinary and educational initiatives."

They have deactivated them in thale cress (Arabidopsis thaliana), a typical annual. The VIB researchers found that mutant plants can no longer induce flowering, but they can continue to grow vegetatively or come into flower much later. Melzer had found that modified crops did not use up their store of non-specialised cells, enabling perennial growth. They can therefore continue to grow for a very long time.

As with real perennials these plants show secondary growth with wood formation creating shrub-like Arabidopsis plants."

They generated a high concentration of Runx2 at one end of the scaffold and decreased that amount until they ended up with no transcription factor on the other end, resulting in a precisely controlled spatial gradient of Runx2. After that, they seeded skin fibroblasts uniformly onto the scaffold. The skin cells on the parts of the scaffold containing a high concentration of Runx2 turned into bone, while the skin cells on the scaffold end with no Runx2 turned into soft tissue. The result is an artificial bone that gradually turns into soft tissue, such as tendons or ligaments."
