Firefox is in a bit of a mess – but, seriously, not such a bad mess. You're still better off with it – or one of its forks, because this is FOSS – than pretty much any of the alternatives.

Like many things, unfortunately, much of computing is run on feelings, tradition, and group loyalties, when it should use facts, evidence, and hard numbers. Don't bother saying Firefox is getting slower. It's not.

Perhaps [jwk is] right, and Mozilla should be a nonprofit, working to fund the one independent, non-vendor-driven, standards-compliant browser engine.

bit moody, so rely on comments for corrections:

if you want to ensure no site works in Firefox, definitely make devs install a special version. The reason most things still work in Firefox is because many web devs still use it as their day-to-day browser. If it wasn't for that, nobody would care. And the presence of the development tools mean if you spot something going wrong, you can only up the tools and inspect it there and then.

Slippy maps traditionally serve fixed size 'map tiles' in a grid at a given zoom level - for example [http://b.tile.openstreetmap.org/6/29/20.png]
[…]
Servers could send a redirect to a cached resource - some maps do exactly that! But when you can send a tile in just 103 bytes, sending the tile is as simple as sending the redirect.
[…]
69 bytes - if all your clients support scaling
[…]
If you're doing something that involves moving lots of small PNGs around, a hex editor is all you need to check you're using the minimum number of bits per pixel, your palette is truncated, and you don't have any data segments you don't absolutely need.

also check the conversation including SVGs at:

which links to the smallest transparent GIF (60b), from 2009:

smallest intransparent GIF (26b):

… and highlights from the comments there:

18 bytes (49 bytes after gzipping) - 44x37 (good for almost any image or thumbnail) : GIF89a,%00%%00%%%
[…]
Amazingly, if you use your code and vary bytes 7,8,9,10, you can create a 26 byte image of any size (theoretically up to 65,535 pixels by 65,535 pixels). See [http://seconds.com/tiny.gif]

That’s more than the fuel emissions for all air travel in 2019, which clocked in at 2.5%. The answer to “why?” and “how?” may not be immediately obvious, but that’s not the fault of consumers. A well-designed, frictionless digital experience means that users don’t need to worry about what happens behind the scenes and, by extension, the consequences.

Kyle Devine, in his recent book, “Decomposed: The Political Ecology of Music,” thoroughly dismantles that seductive illusion. Like everything we do on the Internet, streaming and downloading music requires a steady surge of energy. Devine writes, “The environmental cost of music is now greater than at any time during recorded music’s previous eras.”
[…]
In environmental terms, however, the CD turned out to be somewhat less deleterious. Devine observes that polycarbonate, the medium’s principal ingredient, is not as toxic as polyvinyl chloride. Early on, the widespread use of polystyrene for CD packaging wiped out that advantage, but a turn toward recyclable materials in recent years has made the lowly CD perhaps the least environmentally harmful format on the market.

Many nice anecdotes. Who would've thought back then that jQuery and COBOL made for a narrative in the same article.

In all likelihood the reason the average age of COBOL programmers is stable is because COBOL programmers develop their depth of experience and expertise in other languages before moving over to COBOL later in their career.
[…]
On the flip side of dependency hell is jQuery. Migrating away from jQuery is not difficult because of dependencies, it is difficult because so many other things have come to depend on jQuery.
[…]
like all holy wars in technology, good sensible arguments against choosing one option over the other become murkier the more often they are repeated. In some ways I think the jQuery story is the most similar to the COBOL story in that the headlines published about it lead with its omnipresence and imply that because other technologies can do the same things now those other (newer) technologies must be better.
[…]
The real horseman of the legacy apocalypse is the depth of the dependency tree.
[…]
we need to start thinking critically about how long we expect a given piece of technology to last and ask ourselves whether the choices we make in building it will make it harder to remove later. We can no longer afford to wait and see when something better comes along. We have to assume that something better will come along eventually.

Finally we need to refocus the conversation and stop demonizing technology just for being old and programmed by old people.

A large NGO came to us years ago and said, “I don’t care what CMS it is, it should just cost half a million dollars”. That was a low point
[…]
the first part of making a decision about a CMS is just sitting with your editorial teams and actually listening to them. And then, and this is the tricky part, going back on a recurring basis to the same people as they start to use the new system, finding out what’s working and what isn’t.
[…]
The best way to think about the workflow of production and distribution is as something that is stuck between two funnels. One funnel is the workflow funnel of your editorial teams, where you really have to understand what their everyday working needs are. The second funnel is the audience engagement or monetization funnel, where you really need to think hard about exactly what the audience journey is.
[…]
The bit in the middle that connects the two funnels in the best way possible – that’s your content technology strategy.
[…]
The biggest problem with content technology now is not just specifying the right tech; it’s maintaining it after launch. For non-profits, having the money to invest in requirement gathering and tech strategy is hard. But getting the budget to maintain and update that technology in a sustainable, iterative way is almost impossible.
[…]
The true disaster, in my opinion, is rich interactive projects that require huge bespoke technology development to even exist in the first place. The kind of project where there’s video at the top, there’s data visualization, and other whizzy things. I look at things like that and think – that will never be updated and it will eventually fail completely. Doing the work to support bespoke projects like that is incredibly expensive

Microbrowsers Are Everywhere ◆ 24 ways

Microbrowsers are a class of User-Agents that also visit website links, parse HTML and generate a user experience. But unlike those traditional browsers, the HTML parsing is limited and the rendering engine is singularly focused. The experience is not intended to be interactive. Rather the experience is intended to be representational - to give the user a hint of what exists on the other side of the URL.

Creating link previews is not new. Facebook and Twitter have been adding these link previews in posts for nearly a decade.
[…]
Rather than reinventing the wheel, each platform looks for pre-existing micro data to generate the preview.

The challenge now is that each communication platform parses and interprets this micro-data in different ways, and presents the information in differing ways.
[…]
It’s easy to miss the traffic from Microbrowsers. This is for a number of reasons:

First, page requests from Microbrowsers don’t run JavaScript and they don’t accept cookies. The Google Analytics block won’t be run or executed. And all cookie will be ignored by the rendering agent.

Second, if you were to do a log analysis based on HTTP logs from your CDN or web stack, you would see a relatively small volume of traffic.
[…]
Microbrowser are probably more important than google bot
[…]
- [Microbrowsers] don’t execute JavaScript - so your react application won’t work
- ignore all cookies - so your A/B or red/green cookies will be ignored
- some will follow redirects, but will quickly time out after a few seconds and give up trying to expand the link.
- there won’t be a referer: HTTP header when the user clicks the link for the full browser. In fact, a new user will appear as ‘direct’ traffic - as though they typed in the url.
[…]
Since Microbrowsers are simple-brained browsers, it is all the more important to produce good markup. Here are a few good strategies:

It’s almost 2020, advertise one favicon size. Remove all the other <link rel="shortcut icon" and <link rel="icon" references.

Based on observational experimentation, the most commonly recognized micro data tags for preview are the Open-Graph tags. When the OG and twitter card tags are missing, the default SEO <meta name="description" is used.
[…]
- use good descriptive text
- Provide up to three <meta property="og:image" images. Most platforms will only load the first one, while others (notably iMessage) attempts to create a collage.
- Use <meta property="og:video* with progressive (not streaming) video experiences.

Winer had invented his Scripting News format to syndicate the posts he wrote for his blog. Guha and Libby at Netscape had designed RSS and called it “RDF Site Summary” because in their minds it was a way of recreating a site in miniature within Netscape’s online portal. Davis, writing to the Syndication mailing list, explained his view that RSS was “originally conceived as a way of building mini sitemaps,”

the more mundane reason is that centralized silos are just easier to design than common standards. Spotify’s obsession with mood and activity-based playlists has contributed to all music becoming more like Muzak, a brand that created, programmed, and licensed songs for retail stores throughout the twentieth century.

On the one hand, raters are supposed to represent average users, providing feedback that will help Google craft algorithms that serve the general public. On the other, raters have to stick with Google's interpretation of what an average user is—or risk getting their hours cut. One rater noted that the right answer on a task "often doesn't fit our experiences as real users outside of work."
…
A significant portion of the Leapforce workers Ars spoke with are disabled, live in remote areas, or take care of young children, so it’s not easy for them to find full-time work outside the home.
…
Leapforce had to cut the hours of what he estimated at 20 percent of US raters. He couldn't convert these full-time contractors to full-time employees, he said, because Leapforce simply couldn't afford healthcare for all of them.
…
Ultimately, Roberts views the predicament of raters as an ethical issue as much as a legal one.

Drupal's openness to hacking, extending and ability to do just about anything, meant it was more than just a CMS. The biggest innovations in Drupal (flexible content types and Views) date back to the 4.7 era. Views is now in core in Drupal 8. As Drupal matures further from this point, we'll probably see Drupal adopting innovations from other systems and ecosystems, rather than innovating on it's own.
