You realized that part of technological advancement was the exclusion of issues that could not be addressed by technology. (Sorry, but we must keep our discussion to the scope of the agenda.) Such issues are viewed as impractical or unworthy of attention. As a result, these issues do not get promoted—no funding, no research teams, no project support, and no young students interested in learning about them. They become a focus only for science fiction writers and trouble-seekers.

The 2009 original is still a joy, a cheery take on tower defence with pea-spitting plants, bungee-jumping zombies, stoics nuts, a lovely theme song, and just enough strategy to be rewarding without baffling. The second game is still a mess, with microtransactions making everything grody in that early-2010s EA way. data:text/html,

for light formatting, e.g. video call scratchpads you can use something like

data:text/html,
start typing

For us, this not only came as a surprise but created severe uncertainties on our end – after all, a substantial part of our funding depends on us being able to verify that we are a legitimate Diamond OA publication upholding high academic standards.

The removal notification left us puzzled and we did not find the reasoning to be convincing, not least because it appeared to fundamentally question Verfassungsblog’s scholarlyness because of its chosen format, i.e. brief analyses, expeditious processes, and referencing via hyperlinks. We therefore decided to appeal the decision but that appeal was denied at the end of May 2025. We are worried about what this might mean for our funding and, ultimately, for our ability to continue our work.

That’s what makes the politics of Section 174 so revealing. For all the rhetoric about bringing jobs back and making things in America, the first Trump administration’s major tax bill arguably helped accomplish the opposite.

To understand the impact, imagine a personal tax code change that allowed you to deduct 100% of your biggest source of expenses, and that becoming a 20% deduction.
[…]
R&D had become more expensive to carry. Headcount, the leading R&D expense across the tech industry, was the easiest thing to cut.

Smaller companies without the fortress-like balance sheets of Big Tech have arguably been hit even harder.

Kat Shaw: It is key to include welcoming communication for your potential and existing speakers. This will create a relationship with your speakers from the beginning and let them know that they are now part of your community.

It's so important to be an inclusive environment, especially for newcomers. That's the only way your community, big or small, is going to grow.
