Sifrol is a medicine that contains the active substance pramipexole. It is available as ‘immediate-release’ white tablets (round: 0.088, 0.7 and 1.1 mg; oval: 0.18 and 0.35 mg) and as ‘prolonged-release’ white tablets (round: 0.26 and 0.52 mg; oval: 1.05, 1.57, 2.1, 2.62 and 3.15 mg). Immediate-release tablets release the active substance immediately, and prolonged-release tablets release it slowly over a few hours.

What is Sifrol used for?
Sifrol is used to treat the symptoms of the following diseases:

Parkinson’s disease, a progressive brain disorder that causes shaking, slow movement and muscle stiffness. Sifrol can be used either on its own or in combination with levodopa (another medicine for Parkinson’s disease), at any stage of disease including the later stages when levodopa starts becoming less effective;
moderate to severe restless-legs syndrome, a disorder where the patient has uncontrollable urges to move the limbs to stop uncomfortable, painful or odd sensations in the body, usually at night. Sifrol is used when a specific cause for the disorder cannot be identified.
The medicine can only be obtained with a prescription.

June 15, 2000 (Arlington, Va.) -- After months of delays and years of debate, researchers are finally enrolling patients for a study designed to see if an unorthodox treatment regimen, including vitamins and coffee enemas, can shrink the tumors of patients with cancer of the pancreas.

The controversial method already has kept nine of 11 patients who took part in a preliminary study alive for a year, while another person survived for five years, says Nicholas Gonzalez, MD. Gonzalez has received $1.4 million from the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine, in partnership with the National Cancer Institute, to do a three-year study of the treatment. Gonzalez is director of the Nutritional Research and Educational Foundation in New York.

If the FDA were to approve the method for treating pancreatic cancer, it would be "a major revolution," Gonzalez tells WebMD. "This would be the first time that an alternative therapy went through the testing process by the best and most stringent of academic criteria, and got approved as a treatment."

Chemotherapy and surgery are the standard treatments for this very aggressive type of cancer, but they're often ineffective.

Due to the ability of acupuncture to work on a broad range of body systems, it has a valid role in the treatment and maintenance of Parkinson’s. Research has shown that acupuncture provides symptomatic improvement in many cases and some studies have shown that it could be effective in greatly slowing the progression of the disease if treatment is offered early enough in the disease course.

As reported in my June 30 (2009) Research Synopses, acupuncture was found to create significant effects in motor function even when using distal points (points away from the scalp, in this case). This study shows how acupuncture can create and foster deep connections within the body and brain.

That article also includes some more general information about Parkinson’s from both western and eastern aspects.

That there is benefit from acupuncture and other aspects of Chinese Medicine is fairly clear based on practitioner/clinical outcomes and recent research. What isn’t entirely clear, is “how” acupuncture specifically may help.

In a recent study by researchers from the Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine and other area institutions, the point GB 34 was explored specifically for its role in modulating the biochemistry behind Parkinson’s.

Skype is better with friends. You can search and find friends using the search bar in Skype. You can search your friends' names, Skype name, email address or phone number. We then help you narrow down your search results by displaying the number of mutual contacts you share, making it even easier to find the right people.

Find your friends by their location

Too often your friends may have common names. You can zero in on them by using a location as well. For example, just "John Smith London" or more specifically "John Smith in London". Keep in mind your friend would need to have their location information in their profile for Skype to find them.

Manage your profile settings

You may add or edit information in your Skype profile such as your location, email, or phone number to make it easier for your friends to find you. If you prefer not to be included in the public search directory or suggested friends, then you can opt out here. Opting out will make it more difficult for your friends to connect with you. If your friends have your verified phone number or email address in their address book, they will still be able to find you on Skype.

The Need for a Biomarker in Parkinson's Disease
Parkinson’s disease (PD) is an increasingly prevalent neurodegenerative disorder currently diagnosed solely on the presence of motor symptoms (i.e., tremor, rigidity, bradykinesia, and postural instability) and their response to dopamine replacement therapy. A major unmet need is the limited number and failure of clinical trials with putative neuroprotective agents intended to halt or delay disease progression. Three main reasons account for this development: (i) At the time of the clinical diagnosis >50% of dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra have degenerated (1) and other neurotransmitter systems (e.g., norepinephrine, serotonin and acetylcholine) have been affected, indicating that the disease is already at an advanced stage (2); (ii) some reports suggest low accuracy for a PD clinical diagnosis, with up to 50% misdiagnosis in early disease (i.e., within 5 y of diagnosis) (3); and (iii) there is still no objective meaningful endpoint for clinical trials for early PD other than the Unified PD Rating Scale (UPDRS), a rater-based assessment of symptom severity. Thus, there is a need for objective biomarkers that either are neuropathophysiological manifestations of the disease (marker of state), track the speed of its progression (marker of rate), or are present in at-risk PD (marker of trait) (4). Adding complexity to this endeavor is the fact that PD is very heterogeneous in its clinical, neuropathological, and probably also pathophysiological presentation, with various subtyping strategies based on motor and also nonmotor symptoms recently proposed (5). Given the disease’s complexity and …

Fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) is the infusion of liquid filtrate feces from a healthy donor into the gut of a recipient to cure a specific disease. A fecal suspension can be administered by nasogastric or nasoduodenal tube, colonoscope, enema, or capsule. The high success rate and safety in the short term reported for recurrent Clostridium difficile infection has elevated FMT as an emerging treatment for a wide range of disorders, including Parkinson’s disease, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, myoclonus dystopia, multiple sclerosis, obesity, insulin resistance, metabolic syndrome, and autism. There are many unanswered questions regarding FMT, including donor selection and screening, standardized protocols, long-term safety, and regulatory issues. This article reviews the efficacy and safety of FMT used in treating a variety of diseases, methodology, criteria for donor selection and screening, and various concerns regarding FMT.

Our gut is almost as important to us as our brain or our heart, yet we know very little about how it works. In Gut, Giulia Enders shows that rather than the utilitarian and let s be honest somewhat embarrassing body part we imagine it to be, it is one of the most complex, important, and even miraculous parts of our anatomy. And scientists are only just discovering quite how much it has to offer; new research shows that gut bacteria can play a role in everything from obesity and allergies to Alzheimer s. Beginning with the personal experience of illness that inspired her research, and going on to explain everything from the basics of nutrient absorption to the latest science linking bowel bacteria with depression, Enders has written an entertaining, informative health handbook. Gut definitely shows that we can all benefit from getting to know the wondrous world of our inner workings. In this charming book, young scientist Giulia Enders takes us on a fascinating tour of our insides. Her message is simple if we treat our gut well, it will treat us well in return. But how do we do that? And why do we need to? Find out in this surprising, and surprisingly funny, exploration of the least understood of our organs.

This guide is for people who care for family members or others with Alzheimer's disease (AD) at home. AD is an illness that changes the brain. It causes people to lose the ability to remember, think, and use good judgment. People with AD may have trouble taking care of themselves. Over time, as the disease gets worse, they will need more help.

Sometimes, taking care of the person with AD makes you feel good because you are providing love and comfort. Other times, it can be overwhelming. Also, each day brings new challenges. You may not even realize how much you have taken on because the changes can happen slowly over a long period of time.

We've written this guide to help you learn about and cope with these changes and challenges. You will also find suggestions for taking care of yourself, which help you to be a good caregiver.

The information in this guide comes from other caregivers and from medical research, such as that funded by the National Institute on Aging (NIA). NIA is part of the National Institutes of Health, the nation's medical research agency. NIA leads the effort to find the cause of and treatment for Alzheimer's disease.

The remarkable study was published in the journal PLOS ONE.

The human gut alone hosts approximately 100 trillion bacteria and other microbes of many different species, which are collectively known as the gut microbiome or microbiota (our body’s overall microbiome also includes microbes living on the skin and in other parts of the body). Studies have shown that the gut microbiome plays a key role in regulating everything from digestion and metabolism to immune function and even mood, but the mechanisms of this action remain largely a mystery.

Young adults with juvenile-onset fibromyalgia (JFM) who have a history of trauma have higher rates of psychological disturbances, according to a study titled “Clinical profiles of young adults with juvenile-onset fibromyalgia with and without a history of trauma.”

The study compared JFM patients with and without a history of trauma over eight years, and the results were published in the journal Arthritis Care & Research.

Fibromyalgia patients often report traumatic situations — physical or sexual abuse, neglect, parental divorce, financial hardship — when questioned about their past. Studies have suggested that a traumatic history could enhance pain in these patients.

A history of trauma and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) appears to be more common in youth with JFM than in healthy young adults. But its impact on the disease outcome of young adult patients had not been previously addressed.

The fight against the debilitating effects of Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases may have just gotten a new weapon from both a land-based and sea-based plant in the Mediterranean basin. Researchers at the University of Malta (UM) have found that an extract from the prickly pear cactus and brown seaweed known as peacock's tail – which both grow in the region – might help disrupt a key process in which both diseases take hold.

Sticky proteins known as beta-amyloid plaques have previously been shown to play a role in Alzheimer's disease in the brain by interrupting the nervous system, so finding something that can blast them from the body, or keep them from forming in the first place, would be a boon to fighting the disease.

To test out the effectiveness of the extracts in doing just that, the researchers gave a yeast colony a healthy dose of beta-amyloid clumps and then treated the colony with the prickly pear and seaweed extracts, which dramatically improved the health of the yeast.

In dogs with cognitive dysfunction, antioxidants and environmental enrichment programs improved cognition and reduced amyloid levels, but the improvements in cognition appeared to be independent of reduced amyloid levels.

Certain genes that increase amyloid levels lead to Alzheimer's disease but other factors play a role as well.

Anavex 2-73 by inhibiting neuronal nitric oxide synthase improves mitochondrial function and limits neuronal cell death.

Anavex 2-73 led to some improvements in cognition and activities of daily living that were sustained for a year.

Because of the way the drug worked, Brundin recognized potential for it to treat Parkinson’s and funding was secured from the Cure Parkinson’s Trust and several other grants to explore how MSDC-0160 could be repurposed.

What had sparked Brundin’s initial interest in MSDC-0160 was how the drug targeted systems in the body’s energy metabolism, a new and largely unexplored approach to treating Parkinson’s. And what Brundin’s research team found is the drug slowed down the progression of Parkinson’s in animal testing and could potentially do the same in human trials.

Skinka 1-3 kg = 80°C.
Skinka 5-7 kg = 85-90°C.
Skinka 10- kg med ben = 95-100°C.

Lägg skinkan i en lånpanna. Täck med aluminiumfolie. Sätt in i ugn 12-24 timmar. Innertemperatur 67-73°C = klar.

Kockens kommentar

Brain scan images showed patients who were given the highest dose of the medicine--10 mg for every kilogram of body weight--were essentially free of amyloid plaques after 12 months of treatment. Although with the higher dose came higher AEs, notably amyloid-related imaging abnormalities (Aria), which can cause serious swelling in the brain.

The terms “game-changer” and even this candidate being “preventative” have been used by U.S. and U.K. newspapers--and even caused an extended gushing piece on the normally level-headed BBC news channel; but investors have been here before, seeing so much hype from an early-stage Alzheimer’s asset that, along with 99% of all candidates over the last decade, have gone on to fail.

The disease affects an estimated 5.4 million Americans and will eventually prove fatal--with its prevalence only expected to rise as the population ages.

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is characterized by deposition of amyloid-β (Aβ) plaques and neurofibrillary tangles in the brain, accompanied by synaptic dysfunction and neurodegeneration. Antibody-based immunotherapy against Aβ to trigger its clearance or mitigate its neurotoxicity has so far been unsuccessful. Here we report the generation of aducanumab, a human monoclonal antibody that selectively targets aggregated Aβ. In a transgenic mouse model of AD, aducanumab is shown to enter the brain, bind parenchymal Aβ, and reduce soluble and insoluble Aβ in a dose-dependent manner. In patients with prodromal or mild AD, one year of monthly intravenous infusions of aducanumab reduces brain Aβ in a dose- and time-dependent manner. This is accompanied by a slowing of clinical decline measured by Clinical Dementia Rating—Sum of Boxes and Mini Mental State Examination scores. The main safety and tolerability findings are amyloid-related imaging abnormalities. These results justify further development of aducanumab for the treatment of AD. Should the slowing of clinical decline be confirmed in ongoing phase 3 clinical trials, it would provide compelling support for the amyloid hypothesis.
