They’re easy to park, practical for families, and generally efficient enough that you don’t feel a pinch every time you stop for fuel. But not every crossover ages gracefully.

The Jeep Grand Cherokee has spent more than three decades doing something few SUVs have managed to pull off: being equally at home in suburban driveways and halfway up a mountain trail. That’s a balancing act that has earned it a loyal following, and for 2026 Jeep has wisely resisted the urge to reinvent the formula. Just as the V8 eventually went, so has the V6 now gone.

The refresh points and headlines are straightforward. The exterior gets a cleaner face, the cabin receives a welcome technology update, and under the hood the long-serving Pentastar V6 bows out for a new turbocharged four-cylinder. That last change is easily the biggest story, and it’s one that will probably divide Jeep faithful.

It’s found in several popular vehicles like the F-150, the Bronco, the Ranger, and others. Its reputation for strong power output and dependability is well-earned. Yet the second-generation of the 2.7L EcoBoost (2018 model year forward) has two common failure points that owners should be aware of.

In a series of engine teardown videos, YouTuber I Do Cars takes three 2.7L EcoBoost engines apart, finding a couple of possible reasons for their demise. The engines lived different lives before being condemned after failure, but have similar internal signs of design flaws.

The 3.0-liter LZ0 Duramax diesel has earned a reputation as one of General Motors’ most capable light-duty truck engines. While the engine has generally proven reliable, a small number of owners have reported thrust bearing failures leading to excessive crankshaft end play and, in some cases, complete engine replacement.

A recent teardown by DemonWorks on YouTube examined one such failed engine with roughly 7,500 miles on the odometer. What the shop found may provide new clues as to why some of these failures occur; and suggests the problem may stem from an assembly issue rather than the oil pump belt that is often blamed.

Ford took a sales hit. But not for long, and other truck makers took note. Walk through any pickup truck dealership today and you’ll find that turbochargers are everywhere. Is this turbo trend adding a weak point to our trucks?

Today, engines like Ford’s EcoBoost lineup, GM’s 2.7-liter TurboMax, Toyota’s i-Force turbocharged four-cylinder, and Ram’s new Hurricane inline-six are the norm rather than the exception in full-sized trucks. Did adding more complexity to an engine mean adding more opportunities for things to break?

The answer is both yes and no. But mostly no.
