On 27 April 2024, the Perplexity AI answer engine outlined its prevalence — one in 90,000 individuals were affected — and that same month, OpenAI’s ChatGPT was telling users whether their symptoms amounted to bixonimania. Some of those responses were prompted by asking about bixonimania, and others were in response to questions about hyperpigmentation on the eyelids from blue-light exposure.

Queer Norfolk is a grassroots volunteer-led project, in partnership with Norwich Pride and supported by Norfolk Library & Information Service. It aims to hand ownership of queer collections back to communities and empower people to access, discover, and contribute to collections that reflect their shared histories. Central to this project is the creation of a Queer Norfolk e-Hive platform and website, which has enabled digital access to queer heritage collections across the county’s libraries, museums, and archives.

Queer- and volunteer-led projects can work alongside institutions to democratise ownership and accessibility of queer collections, while also creating a regional queer history network. Queer Norfolk hopes that the project will provide a template for many other regional heritage organisations to work together to open their queer collections to the public."

tr. Leonard Nathan

In the great silence of my favorite month,
October (the red of maples, the bronze of oaks,
A clear-yellow leaf here and there on birches),
I celebrated the standstill of time.

The vast country of the dead had its beginning everywhere:
At the turn of a tree-lined alley, across park lawns.
But I did not have to enter, I was not called yet.

Motorboats pulled up on the river bank, paths in pine needles.
It was getting dark early, no lights on the other side.

I was going to attend the ball of ghosts and witches.
A delegation would appear there in masks and wigs,
And dance, unrecognized, in the chorus of the living.

is to crowd into a body again
a full mind and participate in it
in what you are missing for instance
desire always very present in a group
ordering drinks on Saturday after the reading
everyone’s knees everyone’s jacket
reach over you for that

across the deep circle of the table
the couple makes eyes and knows it’s time
it’s time there is no watch like a couple
if you want to see an entire clock face
please direct your eyes to the couple’s eyes
telling each other the time

The purpose of the Paper Password Manager is to be a “good enough” solution so that if one of a user’s accounts is compromised, all of their other accounts remain secure. And if the Paper Password Manager itself is compromised through loss or theft by an attacker who doesn’t know the key, login credentials to the user’s account are not immediately known – giving the user time to change their passwords before the attacker gains access to their accounts.

MAKE LITTLE GUYS: A manifesto inspired by that one Tumblr post, and Minoan clay figures.

Make little guys.

Make little guys in the lineage of our ancestors, who stuck their hands into a pile of mud and made a little guy.

Little guys transcend and inhabit all ages and all cultures and all continents.

Little guys have been here forever, and they will outlive us.

Make little guys because this is a primal human instinct, a deep longing made physical and often kind of round.

This is the impulse of many millennia, that runs through our beings.

This is not to serve as a definition of what a little guy is. There is no need to define a little guy, we all know what a little guy is.

If you have a little guy that has a purpose, let it fulfill it.

If you have a little guy puppet, let it dance.

If you have a little guy pitcher, let it pour.

If you have a little guy whistle, let it sing.

If you have a little guy figure, let it be played with and broken and glued together again, because something precious is something loved, not something perfect.

Make little guys in the shape of those you have loved, make little guys in the shape of those you have lost.

Make little guys because this is the only way you know how to hold them again and because these little guys yearn to be held.

Make little guys out of clay, out of wood, out of felt, out of iron, out of paper, out of pixels and code, but little guys have to be the work of your hands and the work of your heart.

A little guy made without heart is uninhabited and will not have the correct little guy energy.

You'll know.

In Heraklion Archaeological Museum on Crete, there are collections of little hand-pinched four-legged creatures, made with no particular skill or technique, as if a child was playing and made a little guy, and another child said "I want to make that little guy too."

If you have made a little guy, and someone says "how did you make that little guy," you must show them.

Little guy making techniques should not be hoarded, they belong to a collective human impulse greater than any one of us humans.

When we die, let us be buried with little guys, so that generations past us, if we are lucky to have generations past us, will find them and say "what a little guy. they must have been loved."

And they will see our little guys in their little guys and their little guys in our little guys, and they will make little guys in our lineage and in the image of our little guys and in the image of what we have made, and we will live forever.

They are often created with widely available, general-purpose AI applications, most likely ChatGPT, and mimic scientific writing. Google Scholar easily locates and lists these questionable papers alongside reputable, quality-controlled research. Our analysis of a selection of questionable GPT-fabricated scientific papers found in Google Scholar shows that many are about applied, often controversial topics susceptible to disinformation: the environment, health, and computing.

The bibliomancy exercise goes like this:

1. Take a notebook and pen and go to a library, to the fiction stacks, poetry, autobiography, literary criticism, literary journals... maybe even choose a different genre for each selection.

2. Ask, "What should I be writing about?" And for 60 minutes—set a timer even—wander the stacks, flipping open books at random. Pause before the shelf, and if you want it to be more like a Tarot card reading, close your eyes, reach out with your non-dominant hand and see if there’s a book that feels like it is pulling at you, maybe even warmer than the others. Flip it open and if you like, run your finger down the page, or, just read the two facing pages for a passage that speaks to you. Write it down along with the title and author, even the page number if you want to find it again.

3. Do this 6 more times.

4. Read the list of quotes and look for a common theme or themes. Write them down. Are there any images or ideas that repeat or images or ideas that speak to your own ideas? Is there even just a line you like particularly?

The idea behind the exercise is to use the quotes as a way to begin to make connections first to what you are thinking about as the themes emerge are typically unconscious to the querent, giving shape to something they’ve been thinking about, not necessarily because of any mystical element, but because of synchronicity. The arrangement of unfamiliar elements allows the ideas to surprise us, to dress in a costume that allows them to be heard.

The psychological theory of expectation that David Huron proposes in Sweet Anticipation grew out of the author's experimental efforts to understand how music evokes emotions. These efforts evolved into a general theory of expectation that will prove informative to readers interested in cognitive science and evolutionary psychology as well as those interested in music. The book describes a set of psychological mechanisms and illustrates how these mechanisms work in the case of music. All examples of notated music can be heard on the Web.

Huron proposes that emotions evoked by expectation involve five functionally distinct response systems: reaction responses (which engage defensive reflexes); tension responses (where uncertainty leads to stress); prediction responses (which reward accurate prediction); imagination responses (which facilitate deferred gratification); and appraisal responses (which occur after conscious thought is engaged). For real-world events, these five response systems typically produce a complex mixture of feelings. The book identifies some of the aesthetic possibilities afforded by expectation, and shows how common musical devices (such as syncopation, cadence, meter, tonality, and climax) exploit the psychological opportunities. The theory also provides new insights into the physiological psychology of awe, laughter, and spine-tingling chills. Huron traces the psychology of expectations from the patterns of the physical/cultural world through imperfectly learned heuristics used to predict that world to the phenomenal qualia we experienced as we apprehend the world.
