when it comes to exchange of information in a semantic web environment. Users need to have the ability to use industry
terminology and standard vocabulary. Ontologies have been used by industries to establish effective semantic web environment
for e-business and the exchange of information. Mapping product data models and classification systems into ontologies
is a meaningful decision. This will allow the use of industry standards and terminology. This paper compares different
strategies that have been used for incorporating IFC into semantic web technologies. It also proposes an agent-based distributed
architecture for dynamically managing ontology mapping in the construction industry.

I’ve noticed a dearth of postings about using Excel, a very popular tool, particularly if you already have a Microsoft Office license.

Experts disparage Excel as a tool, but it can provide a way to start your thesaurus development. And, if you are mindful of organizing your Excel worksheet so that its data can be imported later into a dedicated tool, you can achieve some important objectives. Excel is indeed the most popular thesaurus management tool. (see Taxonomy & metadata strategies for effective content management workshop slides in which taxonomy expert Joe Busch reiterates this.)

Information Architecture is the discipline dealing with the modern version of this problem: how to organize web sites so that users actually can find what they are looking for.

Information architects have so far applied known and well-tried tools from library science to solve this problem, and now topic maps are sailing up as another potential tool for information architects. This raises the question of how topic maps compare with the traditional solutions, and that is the question this paper attempts to address.

The paper argues that topic maps go beyond the traditional solutions in the sense that it provides a framework within which they can be represented as they are, but also extended in ways which significantly improve information retrieval.

According to the summary, “Until recently, tools for managing controlled vocabularies, taxonomies, and thesauri all stored their data using proprietary formats that made the data difficult to integrate with external systems. The W3C SKOS standard defines a portable, flexible controlled vocabulary format that is increasingly popular, with the added benefit of a good entry-level step toward the use of Semantic Web technology.”
